Red Planet Day: Celebrating Mars Exploration and Mariner 4's Historic Mission
"Happy Red Planet Day! 🚀 Explore Mars and celebrate the awe-inspiring mission of Mariner 4, revealing the secrets of the red planet. 🌍🔴 #RedPlanetDay #SpaceExploration"
Red Planet Day, celebrated annually on November 28th, holds significance for space enthusiasts and those intrigued by the mysteries of Mars. This day marks the launch of Spacecraft Mariner 4, a groundbreaking mission that achieved the first successful flyby of the red planet. After three previous attempts, Mariner 4 was launched on November 28, 1964, and reached Mars on July 14, 1965. The mission…

Meet the Contestants: Mariner 4
Mariner 4 Schematic [NASA/JPL-Caltech]
The Mariner 4 spacecraft made the first successful flyby of Mars. Launched on November 28, 1964, it reached Mars July 14, 1965 and returned the first up-close images of the planet. There’s a tumblr post kicking around that I can’t find which talks about Mariner scientists printing out the first image as a matrix of values and colouring them in like a colour by numbers – it’s a great story.
Mariner 4 returned many images of Mars surface, allowing more detailed mapping, and also images of the atmosphere, which was much thinner than previously believed. I take it for granted now that Mars has a tenuous little atmosphere, but it’s cool to see that we haven’t always known that.
The spacecraft did not remain in martian orbit, and instead swung out around the sun, where it remains today. But we lost contact with Mariner 4 after just over 3 years on December 21, 1967.
Read more on the NASA Mariner 4 site.
Tune in for round 2 of the Mars Mission Tournament, where Mariner 4 will be going up against one of the earliest Soviet Mars missions.

Scientists and engineers have come a long way from the earliest attempts to capture close-up views of Mars. In 1965, a NASA probe called Mariner 4 made the first flyby and beamed home its observations. Back on Earth, converting the data into real images was a slow process—so slow that the staff at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, excited and impatient, pulled numbers from Mariner’s data that corresponded with color, printed the numerals on paper, and then painted the makeshift canvas with pastels that one of them had bought at a local art store. When the real deal finally came in, it marked the first time humankind had gotten a close-up of the surface of another planet.

just realized that the bidens’ dogs are named major and commander but he got commander after major which means he made the decision to have his younger dog outrank the elder…no wonder they keep biting people
