For all its faults, lack of depth, corny humour and just the general… disconnect from the rest of the PL series (I say this as someone who likes a lot of the LMJ characters), I think Marina was one the best things to come out of the anime.

Forget that she’s Luke’s wife for a moment. Forget that she filled a role that could have easily been taken up by another older member of the cast. (Flora, Emmy, Desmond…) Forget that we don’t know much about her interests or hobbies or personality—

We do get a bit, even if it is generic? She worries about her loved one. She needs Professor Layton’s help. She gets captured…? Kind of par for the course with  most PL characters. I would die for Janice Quatlane, but how much of her personality do we really see during ED? We know she loves her girlfriend and she’s selfless, like Marina. It’s not an in depth trait - nowhere near as convoluted as DESCOLE’S motivations - but it’s a good one!

But you know what else Marina does? Infiltrates the same cult that captured her. Spends eleven years— ELEVEN YEARS, that’s HENRY LEDORE LEVELS OF DEDICATION— trying to figure out how to free her husband and his Professor-In Law, who just had to investigate the relic from an ancient civilisation you’d think they would have learned better by now

Sure, Marina couldn’t bust Luke and Layton on her own, until Kat came along. Just like Henry and Angela couldn’t solve the mystery of the Masked Gentleman without Layton’s help? Or Melina couldn’t stop her father’s plan without Layton’s help? Or Claire said she couldn’t stop Clive and Dimitri without Layton’s help? The world revolves around the Layton family and everyone depends on them, that’s just how things are.

Marina Triton is here mastering technology from an ancient civilisation, while Jean Descole failed to notice A Song of the Sun and Bronev missed/ignored the warnings about the very obvious doomsday device. Both dedicated their lives to studying the Azran, but this rando marine biology girl from America worked out how to control cryogenic pods in the eleven years she was (presumably) held captive. It’s makes zero sense or complete sense. I love it.

And after that? Marina is there when Luke wakes up and they have a heartfelt reunion. No, for some absurd reason, Marina doesn’t get to accompany the gang when they face the final villain (she would have been too powerful), but in her last scene we see her shopping and Luke carrying all her bags. After all that, Marina’s earned it.

it’s 1 am and im thinking about how truly insanely unfair the layton fandom was about marina triton while lmda was airing

like the layton series is so infamous for reducing it’s female characters (barring emmy) to either Irrelevant Or Dead and the ONE woman we had that quite literally did the hardest thing in the name of love and some of y’all shat on her bc she didnt fit ur hc for luke or whatever

like yea we didnt get a lot about her but like we didn’t get a lot about fucking ANYBODY from the relic stone arc. it’s just a story that was too big to be told as a side plot in an anime for kids. it should be it’s own game

Luke design mini-analysis

I’m a little late to the party so people have been talking a lot about this already, but I wanted to look into Luke’s new design.

First of all, he’s significantly taller! Luke had already grown between 10 and 13, but not this much. And he’s switched from his classic shorts to long pants and from his weird Mary Jane shoes to normal ones. He’s lost his cheek blushes of childhood innocence, which many people are complaining about.

Whether or not they’re retconning the events of the anime, it looks like Luke’s 15 y/o and young adult designs are canon. His eyebrows appear to be slightly thicker than before, but not nearly as thick as they will be. Plus, he has three bangs in his hair instead of one, also consistent with his older design. Not to mention the reddish vest and shoes which are similar to the ones we see on adult Luke.

The first thing you notice in this new design is the bright red bow tie. The first association is that this is in reference to Emmy’s design during the prequels. The red color looks the same as the ribbon on Layton’s hat and could serve to tie their designs together visually. Red ribbon bows are also associated with Flora’s design as she has one in her ponytail and one as a belt. All in all, the bow tie might be an amalgamation of references symbolic of past adventures which Luke wears to remind himself of his life back in England.

Back when the anime came out, people were surprised by how different Luke’s design was, and theorized that he changed his appearance to disassociate himself from Clive after the end of Lost Future. It made sense at the time, and we noticed that he slowly started looking more and more like Clark instead of a bigger version of his past self. But now, interestingly, he looks even more like Clive than he did last year. His hair is in a similar style, he still has his old hat, and that thinking pose is reminiscent of Clive’s puzzle animations. The blazer and vest combo is very similar.

It’s possible that Luke still has respect for Clive, or something happened after LS that made him forgive him. Conversely, it’s also possible that he wants to be better than him. This is kind of stupid, but little Luke has one bang in his hair, Clive has two, and from this point forward Luke has three. It’s also possible that Luke has just been continuing on with his old style, but something happens during or after NWOS that makes Luke want to emulate Clark more.

Either way, the connections Luke built over the last two trilogies shaped him into who he is in his new life in America, and his design reflects that. I do hope we get more explicit reference to this, preferably the characters actually showing up. I expect to see his parents for sure, and hopefully Marina, but surely they have to reference what’s going on back in London after a year and have someone make an appearance. Right?
