Let the music play with Amir ElSaffar, the Two Rivers Ensemble and Hamid al-Saadi
Amir ElSaffar was born and raised near Chicago, but his heart and soul are informed as much by Iraq as by Illinois. A multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and composer, ElSaffar marvelously marries Middle Eastern musical traditions with American jazz.
ElSaffar will make his Penn State debut April 4 in an Eisenhower Auditorium concert featuring his Two Rivers Ensemble and Iraqi vocalist Hamid Al-Saadi.
Amir ElSaffar — trumpeter, santur (hammered dulcimer) player, vocalist, and composer — is a master of diverse sounds. The Chicago-area native has distinguished himself by combining Middle Eastern traditions with jazz and other styles of music.
ElSaffar, who has a degree in classical trumpet from DePaul University, is fluent in the idiom of jazz, but he has also created techniques to play microtones and ornaments associated with Arabic music that are rarely heard on trumpet.
Two Rivers Ensemble, a sextet, combines the musical languages and instrumentation of Iraqi maqam and contemporary jazz. The ensemble’s music speaks the vernacular of swing, improvisation, and group interaction.
Through his powerful and highly ornamented voice, and in his comprehensive knowledge of the intricate details of the music and poetry of Iraq, generations and layers of the maqam tradition resonate through Hamid al-Saadi.
He is one of the few vocalists who is keeping the art alive today, at a time when so many elements of the tradition are in danger of extinction.
Opus 961, Violist Noemi Chemali’s Auspicious Debut: New Music Activism From Emerging Lebanese Composers
There are many ways to debut on the world stage and there are many ways to represent political activism. Violist Noemi Chemali has chosen, as her important first impression in her recorded debut, a selection of music from young composers whose heritage includes political oppression. The albums profits are promised to MSF, also known as Doctors Without Borders. These works are not directly…

some maqāms abandoned/destroyed/appropriated in palestine after the 1948 nakba:
maqām al-khidr in the village of al-bassa.
maqām al-shaykhh mansour in the village of farradiyya.
maqām al-nabi shwami in the village of lubya.
maqām al-shaykh sultan badr in the village of dayr al-shaykh.
maqām al-shaykh amir in the village of jab'a.
maqām al-nabi yamin in the former village of kafr saba.
maqām al-shaykh 'abd allah in the village of umm al-shawf.
maqām al-nabi kifl in the village of dayr tarif.
maqām al-shaykh tamim in the former village of bayt jibrin.
maqāms are shrines built on sites associated with saints or other religious figures, common in the levant. (similar traditions can be found in surrounding areas.) rooted in ancient semitic, jewish, samaritan, and christian traditions, maqāms are usually associated with islam today in a reflection of the area's changing demographics; though some are considered holy by members of other abrahamic religions (such as maqam al-nabi yamin, which is thought by jews to house the body of the biblical character benjamin).
in palestine, many muslim villagers weren't easily able to access a mosque for a long time, and maqāms served the purpose of a place of worship - including for christian and jewish neighbors.
Spain is so funny because we know it as one of the most culturally catholic places ever but a good bunch of the cultural elements have such strong muslim influences
Maqam Ibrahim; Maqam Ibrahim is the stone with the purported footprints of prophet Ibrahim. This stone is almost square shape having 40 cm of length and width and the height of about 20 cm. The color of this stone is yellowish and reddish white.
Completing Tawaf
Upon completing the Tawaf, the Prophet ﷺ kissed the Hajar al-Aswad. Jabir رضي الله عنهما narrates:
When the Prophet ﷺ completed the Tawaf he kissed the Hajar before putting his hands upon it and wiping his face with them.
Upon completion , the Prophet ﷺ walked towards Maqam Ibrahim, which was adjacent to the eastern wall of the Kaaba. He recited the following verse aloud so that people would be able to hear:
وَاتَّخِذُوا مِنْ مَقَامِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ مُصَلًّى
Wattakhidhu Mim Maqami Ibrahima Musalla.
And take the Maqam Ibrahim as a place of Salah.
[Surah al-Baqarah, 2:125]
Standing between Maqam Ibrahim and the Kaaba, the Prophet ﷺ carried out a Salah consisting of two Rakats, reciting Surah al-Kafirun (Surah 109) in the first Rakat and Surah al-Ikhlas (Surah 112) in the second Rakat.23
He then returned to the Hajar al-Aswad and kissed it, before wiping it with his hands and passing them over his face.
