Siyah Qalam, Two demons fettered, from Iran or Central Asia, 15th century, Timurid period (ca. 1370–1507), ink, opaque watercolor and gold on paper, 14.6 × 22.1 cm, National Museum of Asian Art.
“Timurid princes were passionate collectors of Chinese luxury goods, a practice that inspired local artists to experiment with the new styles and motifs found on such imports and to integrate them into their own work.    One intriguing and enigmatic series of drawings and paintings that incorporates Chinese pictorial conventions shows monsters and demons (div) in various activities and poses. These wild, highly expressive creatures contrast sharply with the elegant and emotionally reserved men and women typically seen in Timurid paintings and recall Central Asian and Chinese models and techniques. Frequently, the demons appear with familiar objects, as seen in this remarkable tinted drawing. The one on the right, for instance, plays a spiked fiddle (kamancha), a musical instrument that was popular in Iran and Central Asia. His companion holds a gold cup and a Chinese blue-and-white bottle decorated with a writhing dragon. The style and technique of drawing also owes more to Chinese than Persian pictorial conventions. Both ferocious and comical, these fantastic figures are among the most distinct and powerful images created during the fifteenth century.”

Felt the need to write an essay about this film just to comprehend it lol 🔪🍎
Tumblr media
"Which of these two fires can I endure?"
The inherent suffering of love. For attachment is suffering, and love is attachment to another person, place, thing, or idea. Does it have to be?
Foolishly I think I understand the visuals 😂 The older man's hand pushing the books onto the child's hand. The drinking from the fountain as a youth that informs one's perceptions for the rest of one's life. He sees women as the fountain and the nautilus, knowledge only available from outside himself.
The frame swinging across spinning Cupid, a shifting frame of reference. Washing and laying to rest the body of Christ. Death feels final until one rolls away the stone. And we ask again why we come to this world just to suffer and die?
Was the attachment to the idea that it would not be suffering?
Monks and nuns fighting the "temptation" of the other, hiding behind the godliness of a red suffering Christ-- why? The little boy still feels that women hold the power. The adult man feels powerless in the face of desire. A command and not an invitation. Is it the attachment that makes it so? Crushed by his own heavy jackoff hand 😂
He wants peace. He cannot find it because he thinks it is outside himself.
"I understood that life had abandoned me." He died to himself, in the loss of his expectations. Is he free from attachment now?
No. Sacrificing goats for abundance. The headwraps of the arguing women look like horns. He is still searching for meaning in the hierophants and devils whose drumming causes the little boy to dance, holding feathers.
He thinks he must be a winged thing to receive pleasure.
Beings of air & mind, not of earth & flesh. Christ ascending from the roof of the abbey.
When will we stop putting on the show?
Will we eat the meat? Or was it only a sacrifice?
The woman's face falls in the reflection of his golden bowl. The face of Mary, ultimately just another woman who didn't meet his expectations. The little boy hiding behind his mother's skirts after she covered his face with the kamancha, overruling his voice. Children always think the adults have the answers. The adults may have been wrong to hold them over the children's heads. But at some point the children must grow up.
"I hear calls of homecoming and hope, but I am weary."
Humans are so dramatic for real.
Love is blinded by gold. The angels steal the kamancha. Did the inner voice still go unheard?
The Empress is an idea more than a person. The wine jars in the walls are also things. The cocks are animals. He dies tortured by his own animal nature, because the knowledge was in the body, not the mind. And he thinks the body is an animal to be sacrificed.
The idea of a woman stands in profile, uncaring. Because feeling lives in the flesh, and she did not exist.

Exploring Azerbaijani Culture A Student's Perspective
Azerbaijan is a country located in the Caucasus region of Eurasia, with a rich and diverse culture spanning over thousands of years. With its vibrant festivals, mouth-watering cuisine, and the breath taking landscapes of the Caucasus Mountains, Azerbaijan has become an increasingly popular destination among tourists and students alike. As a student, I had the privilege of exploring Azerbaijani culture first-hand, and in this blog post, I'll be sharing my experiences and insights.
Tumblr media
The Azerbaijani people take immense pride in their cultural heritage, and this is reflected in many aspects of their daily life. One of the most striking features of Azerbaijani culture is its music, which dates to ancient times. Traditional Azerbaijani music is characterized by its unique blend of Eastern and Western influences and is often played on instruments such as the tar, say, and kamancha. As a music lover, I was blown away by the sheer beauty and complexity of Azerbaijani music, and it was fascinating to learn more about its history and significance.
Another aspect of Azerbaijani culture that left a lasting impression on me was its cuisine. Azerbaijani food is a delicious fusion of flavours and textures, with dishes such as plot (rice pilaf), kebab, and dolma (stuffed grape leaves) being staples of the cuisine. I had the opportunity to try many traditional Azerbaijani dishes during my stay, and each one was a unique and unforgettable culinary experience. What impressed me most was the way Azerbaijani cuisine reflects the country's geography and history, with influences from neighbouring countries such as Iran and Turkey.
One of the highlights of my trip to Azerbaijan was attending one of the country's many festivals. Azerbaijani festivals are a celebration of the country's cultural diversity, with events showcasing everything from traditional music and dance to local handicrafts and art. I was lucky enough to attend the Novruz Bay rami festival, which marks the arrival of spring and is celebrated with bonfires, music, and dancing. It was an unforgettable experience that allowed me to immerse myself in Study in Azerbaijan culture and learn more about the country's traditions and customs.
Beyond its festivals and cuisine, Azerbaijan is also home to some of the most breath taking natural landscapes in the world. The country's diverse topography, which includes everything from lush forests to arid deserts, means that there is something for everyone. During my stay, I was able to explore the beautiful Caucasus Mountains, which offer stunning views of the surrounding valleys and villages. There are also many other natural wonders in Azerbaijan, such as the Yana Dag Fire Mountain, which literally burns with natural gas flames that have been alight for hundreds of years.

Conclusion:
Exploring Azerbaijani culture as a student was a life-changing experience that allowed me to broaden my horizons and gain a deeper appreciation for the richness and diversity of the world around us. From the country's vibrant music and mouth-watering cuisine to its beautiful landscapes and festivals, Azerbaijan truly has something for everyone. I hope this blog post has inspired you to consider exploring this incredible country for yourself, and I look forward to hearing about your own experiences. Happy adventuring!

One night of Mugham
Mugam is the fundamental part of Azerbaijan folk music.
This musical genre shares artistic characteristics with the Iraqi Maqam, the Persian Radif and the Turkish Makams. Musical instruments such as  tar, kamancha and daf (a type of large tambourine) are the main components of mugham.
If you’ll visit Azerbaijan someday, do not forget to visit Mugham concert cos its totally differ of what you’ve…

The Promise - Mehmet Polat (2020)
Music is my main language, through which I can feel and express all my thoughts and emotions. Composing for me is like building a house. All the twelve pieces in this album are unique in their own ways, but they are still related to each other. Like twelve houses on the same street, all different but with relations between them.
Mehmet Polat, oud
Alper Kekeç, frame drums and darbuka – track 3,4,7,8
Cemil Qocgiri, tenbur – track 10
Daniel van Huffelen, bass – track 1,6,12
Elnur Mikayılov, kamancha – track 5
Joan Terol Amigo, drums – track 1,6,12
Mikail Aslan, vocals & clarinet – track 10
Ruven Ruppik, Cajon, Bombo legüero, Snare, Doira, Gome, Udu, Effects, cymbals and palmas – track 2,5,10
