Owl Natural Habitat Owls are well known as being very versatile birds when it comes to their habitat. They are able to live in a variety of locations and some of those may surprise you. The most common place to find owls living is in wooded areas. They have a place to call their own territory and where they can hide during the day from predators. They also have access to lots of different food sources because of the other living creatures in the forest. There are some species of owls that are able to live in the rainforests. They do very well with the humidity and the rainfall. They are able to find great places to live that protect them from their environment. It may surprise you though to learn that some owls live in the grasslands and the open prairie. They are able to find lots of food sources in these areas. They don’t seem to mind the heat either because they are sleeping and in cool shaded areas during the day. Some people assume that owls only live in trees. However, they take any opportunity that they can to find shelter and to stake a claim on an environment out there… These birds don’t have to be high off the ground as most people think. That misconception often comes from the fact that they perch up high to find their prey. However, they move from their nesting location to find their prey instead of using that location for their hunting. Owls will use any type of hollowed out log or opening in a tree for a nesting area. They also take over the nests that other birds have left behind. They never create their own nests from scratch.  While it isn’t the ideal solution it is a step that acknowledges that these owls need to be protected. It also helps to prevent the numbers of them in the wild from dropping. There is plenty of research about owl habitats and how we can protect them. Do you know what kind of bird this is? It's the Sri Lankan Frogmouth! - masters of camouflage were so very hard to spot... The Sri Lankan Frogmouth are shy birds that are hardly ever seen during the day so you need to be awake early or late to catch them. If they become frightened they will open their beak a point it upward they often look like a jagged and broken branch. Cool right... Srilankan frogmouths are nocturnal birds, related to nightjars and are found only in the western ghats, South India and in Srilanka. They roost quietly during the day and are very difficult to spot as they blend so well with the surroundings. This family of frogmouths barely moved while we watched them for a while. When they did get disturbed, they swung gently from side to side for a short while before becoming still again. Srilankan Frogmouths are bizarre-looking creatures, but it’s for a reason! They’re unique plumage and appearance helps them to blend in with their surroundings to avoid any potential predators. Each has a favourite roost that it uses regularly unless disturbed. It has a distinctive call that is usually heard at dawn and dusk. The Sarus crane is the world's tallest flying bird. This crane, when standing, is as tall as a man. These elegant birds are predominantly grey, with long, pale red legs. Their naked head is red, as is their neck. Juveniles have buff feathers on their head and slightly darker plumage Sarus cranes are regarded as the least social crane species. Especially when nesting, they can be very protective and are aggressive towards intruders. They can, therefore, be considered a territorial species. Breeding pairs remain close by areas that have ample water supply. Pairs that are non-breeding flock together in bigger wetland areas. Although breeding pairs are territorial, Sarus cranes form bigger flocks in the non-breeding season. The size of a flock usually depends on the wetland area. Within flocks, the cranes feed and roost. Sarus cranes are active during the day and sleep at night. They are known for dancing to attract mates. Characteristic loud trumpeting sounds may accompany these dances. Sarus cranes are omnivorous and eat a wide range of food, such as aquatic plants like sedge tubers, seeds, rice, and other grains, crustaceans, snails, large insects such as grasshoppers, amphibians, reptiles, small vertebrates and fish. Kestrel - common kestrels #2020 #talchhapar #rajasthan In medieval falconry the kestrel was reserved for the knave, reflecting its lowly status. kestrels feed almost exclusively on small rodents, but those living in towns will take sparrows instead. Though rodents may be the principal diet, they will also take a wide variety of other prey, including lizards, earthworms, large insects and even bats. Kestrels have remarkably keen eyesight even in extremely poor light, allowing them to hunt almost until dark. Kestrels hunt from static perches and by hovering: the latter is far more productive but uses lots of energy, which is why they hunt mainly from perches during the winter. Kestrels aren’t as big as they look. An adult weighs on average a mere 220gm, less than half the weight of a red-legged partridge. kestrel is one of a large group of similar species, found throughout much of the world, but it has the largest range, breeding through much of Europe, Africa and Asia. Kestrels are Britain’s most widely distributed bird of prey, breeding throughout the mainland and on many offshore islands. Breeding kestrels like to use old crows’ nests, but they will also use holes in trees, nest boxes and cliff ledges. Most kestrel nest failures occur during incubation; if eggs hatch, then it is most likely that some of the young will fledge. The lesser kestrel, which breeds in southern and eastern Europe, is a strictly colonial nester, often found in large colonies. The world’s rarest species of kestrel lives on Mauritius, where it has come perilously close to extinction. There were just eight birds left in the wild 30 years ago, but the number is now close to 1,000. Males occur in two morphs, one with a rufous or glossy chestnut upper plumage and another with a white or dirty white plumage. . The edges of the wings and tail feathers are sometimes black. Head of Indian paradise flycatcher is glossy black with a glossy black crown and crest. They have short legs and sit very upright whilst perched prominently. The bill is round and sturdy and bluish colour. Lesser florican (Sypheotides indicus) Local Name - likh or kharmore, Record Shot © VIPs ☆Eye-catching in both appearance and behaviour l ☆The Lesser Florican is a bird of the dry grasslands and open fields that prefers drier ungrazed plains with grass upto the height of 0.51 m Flight : The flight of a Lesser Florican is characterized by rhythmic strokes of the broad wings, an outstretched neck and legs and feet tucked under. Floricans fly individually, not in flocks. Display and Territory Establishment: The most characteristic feature of the male Lesser Florican is the vertical jumping habit. The male stands at a selected place, looks around and leaps up to two meters high into the air with an energetic flurry of wing beats. Then, with wings tucked in, he falls swiftly back to the ground. During courtship males repeat this aerial display as many as 400 times a day, while producing a frog-like croak which can be heard from as far as 300-400 meters. The jump is used to set up a territory during the breeding season by warning other males to stay away and to lure potential mates.
