Apothecary Diaries is pog as fuck bc serious political issues and dynamics from a woman's POV are rarely depicted in ANY form of media
It's always a man's world where women's issues surround him. Even if we get a female perspective once in awhile- it all comes back to how it facilitates his game in the end. She's a footnote in the overarching scheme of things. Misogyny exists. Back to the real plot.
Apothecary Diaries is strictly from a female perspective and how each class of woman has to act, what limits they have, what rights they have and don't have between each class, etc. These women have to behave a certain way under a patriarchy, which you would think makes it a man's story, but it never is. The women are THE focus of this show, their struggles are THE plot. The focus is about how the patriarch effects them.
Take the concubines for example. The show dives into how bearing a child affects their rank, how traumatizing it is to lose that child, the consequences of that, etc. We have barely seen the emperor who sired all these kids because this is not about him.
Jinshi's personal plot is secondary to Mao Mao's journey- he is mostly there to provide new cases for Mao Mao to solve and to learn more about the shortcomings of his class when taking care of citizens like Mao Mao.
Jinshi is not a bad person, but by virtue of his position in the higher classes, he cannot understand how harsh life as a poor WOMAN is specifically- he can only catch glimpses of it from what Mao Mao tells him and feel outrage but powerless in his wealth and luxury
Mao Mao is a fortunate commoner woman for what privileges someone in her class should and shouldn't have. She happened to be adopted by a knowledgeable man. She is allowed to read, write, learn, and has enough skill to be a poison tester and have a job EXTREMELY out of her class limit as an apothecary, also a job not traditionally meant for women
Mao Mao is not a "noT lIkE oThER gIrLs" protagonist, she is FOR THE GIRLIES. She only wants to help the women around her, and women are whom she has the closest relationships to. She sees a woman being harassed and can't let it stand. She sees a frail, traumatized woman dying from the recklessness of those who should be caring for her and spends day and night nursing her back to health, while also punishing the people who were so careless with her needs.
My girl has STUDIED UP on THE BODY to TEACH these upper class ladies on how to really HEAT things up in the BEDROOM
Sex depicted in Apothecary Diaries is both something women are not shamed to be enjoying, while at the same time being acknowledged as an unfortunately huge economic necessity to market themselves.
Like shit is just so real in this series???
Listen, I can go on and on about how GOATED the series and especially Mao Mao is but you get the picture

A list of male characters with incredible pussy cause I’m bored
L:
Tumblr media
Everyone makes fun of the way he sits but he’s actually doing kegels.
The guy from Apothecary diaries:
Tumblr media
I came across the 4 first episodes on TV yesterday and I was too busy fangirling over Mao Mao to pay attention to him but I can tell. I forgot his name but not his potential. But I might be biased cause he’s really pretty.
Geto:
Tumblr media
Convinced a Black man to join him in the annihilation of people he deemed lesser than . Had a huge cult following despite being a “monk” with long hair. Imagine what fucking him would do to a mf. Gojo knew better. (Tbh I don’t think he ever let anyone hit)
Gojo:
Tumblr media
he’s the strongest. that gorilla grip is the only monkey related thing Geto wouldn’t hate
Griffith:
Tumblr media
I’m gonna get cancelled for this but I stand by my statement.
Lelouch:
Tumblr media
He’s a bit evil. Just a little bit. Those are the best. Don’t ask me how I know. Ask Suzaku
Sasuke:
Tumblr media
Naruto chased him for years and kept him away from his family once they rekindled their relationship. He knew what he was doing
Nakahara Chuuya:
Tumblr media
If I speak, I’ll get too emotional.
Last but NOT least we got Father Pussy:
Tumblr media
Look at the material. You can be the judge of it. This mf is the only person Dio was afraid to lose. Need I say more? Vanilla ice could never. I think he might be the most dangerous one. That’s why I put him last

One thing I really like about The Apothecary Diaries is how clever the manga plays with little details, skillfully weaving them together into a lively embroidery of each characters.
It is already established in the story that Jin Shi had a heart of a child despite his mature appearance. In chapter 58, when one of the mysteries concerning the late emperor was revealed, we learned that the empress dowager - Jin Shi mom, ordered his nanny maid to take away the toys after his interest in it retained beyond a certain period of time.
Which linked up very well with Jin Shi behaviour in the first chapters, where he was delighted to find a new "toy" that was Mao Mao, and this sole last page
Tumblr media
Mao Mao was his favourite (no longer) "toy"! And he would try to hide her away, protect her, fearing someone or something might take her away, just like the toys severed from him from childhood.

I live! Time to sew another hanfu cosplay.
So yeah, SQQ sewing project - um got relegated to the back burner last year for reasons. And will likely never happen unless I really feel like challenging myself more . . .
But I already have the fabric on hand and I was feeling like I'd be stuck not using it until I saw her.
Tumblr media
That's right! I have a con in just over a month and I'm gonna do Mao Mao from the Apothecary Diaries. I love me a pragmatic plant nerd.
I'll use my green fabric I already bought for the SQQ project, I found burgundy cotton/linen mix at my local fabric store getting the last of the bolt, and figure out the few accent pieces.
I'll try to post my process as I draft the pattern pieces and then sew it together! This will be much easier than my previous one since she wears what appears to be a simple wrap circle skirt.
Even though the series is set in a pseudo-Ming dynasty setting (it has to be after 1492 since chocolate is a luxury good), she is not wearing a Ming style outfit completely.
We can break down her outfit to: Aoqun - green top layer which falls around her hips. Narrow sleeves and a simple style. The neck placket has a dark green strip that goes to the end while a spring green strip on top for part of it. The white underlayer is a mystery - we can see the collar but nothing else. The design is pretty simple and we never see a white sleeve underneath, the light green are cuffs on the sleeve of the aoqun.
Circle/wrap skirt - burgundy skirt that is either a circle or wrap skirt. Not the historically accurate mamian skirt (with all the pleats). This could be due to the fact that animating it might be more annoying or to keep the Ming time period vague.
She also does not wear anything under the skirt in the anime or nothing that doesn't move as a part of the skirt, so I'm gonna skip trying to put something under the skirt.
Things to do: 1.) Draft aoqun pattern. I will use one of my old patterns from WKX but cut off the long skirt part. 2.) Draft skirt pattern. I am going to be a bit lazy on this one and either will do a full circle skirt or pull out a regular skirt pattern (4 panel) and use that. 3.) Determine placket pattern. Just rectangles, but what is the right size of rectangles on rectangles?
4.) Figure out white underlayer? Make a full top like my last one with short sleeves to hide under the aoqun?
Anyhoo, that's all for now!

WHO IS SHE?
I rewatched the first few episodes of the Apothecary Diaries and although we all got introduced to Lihuas ladies in waiting we still havent been introduced to the LADY WHO KNOCKED DOWN THE FLOWER Mao Mao placed on the railing. NONE of the ladies who we've been introduced LOOK like her. WHO IS SHE????? The regular ladies in waiting are kind of ditzy, I cannot think that they decided on their own to hide contraband on their own, someone else had to told them to do it. Now that I think of it out of the main Consorts, Ahduo had FengMing as her Head lady in waiting, and Gyokuyou has 3 ladies in waiting, 1 being Hongniang who is the Head lady in waiting. But none of the girls who we've been introduced to in the Crystal Pavilion give "Head lady in waiting" vibes, but this lady does! She even scoffs after she knocks the flower down. Is she the Head Lady in Waiting for Lihua????? Her character design says that there is something going on. All the other girls are pretty but this woman has details. She's not plain. Her earrings are RED tassels while the other girls have round blue orbs. And red is pretty ballsy for a house that mostly blue, and red generally is a symbol of high rank or affluence. Plus she is wearing a silver necklace. And necklaces seem to be pretty scarce among the ladies in waiting, aside from Hongniang. So she must be special and have some rank. This lady is suspicious, why hasn't she shown up since Episode 1? She has to come back. With all the mysteries brewing, and a new possible pregnancy, I cannot help but think all the infant deaths from the first few episodes is going to come back soon and this lady definitely gives me jealousy vibes. And if I learned anything from watching Chinese period dramas as a kid, the servant women are always suspect.

im so obsessed with The Apothecary Diaries rn for so many reasons, but my favorite plot development so far is how they managed to place so much mystery and dread behind who Rakan was, including his dubious reasons behind his interest in Mao Mao. similar to Mao Mao it sent chills down my spine every time his name was even mentioned, so it’s insane how he went from THAT to later being like one of my favorite/most sympathetic characters?? he was a terrifying villain now im sobbing over the mistakes he made, the happy life that he and Fonshen were robbed of. the writing is insane! it never ceases to amaze me. i haven’t taken an interest in manga in so long, but I’m so happy I chose this one to start up with again.

Fall 2023 Anime Overview: Frieren: Beyond Journey's End and The Apothecary Diaries
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
Tumblr media
Premise: Frieren and her adventuring party saved the world from the Demon King after a ten year quest, and now their adventure is over. Frieren, as an elf who's lived for thousands of years, calls the journey a "short" one and casually says goodbye to her companions, promising to pop back around in fifty years. She does exactly that, only to find her companions have significantly aged, and when a beloved friend quickly passes away, she's wracked with grief and suddenly realizes this very "short" journey was important to her. In order to try to understand her feelings and human lives in general, she decided to retrace the steps of her journey, picking up companions on the way.
Frieren is both an interesting examination of what happens after the hero saves the world, as well as a meditation on mortality, grief, and the endless march of time. Frieren's long life allows her to see the impact she and her friends had on tons of people, even as, heartbreakingly, the memories of her companions are slowly fading from the collective consciousness, with only the legend remaining. There's a beautiful, bittersweet, hopeful but melancholy  atmosphere to the narrative, and the animation is absolutely breathtaking. Frieren herself is an intriguing character, seemingly stoic and disconnected but achingly human underneath it all and not without her funny quirks. She also has a good dynamic with the companions she picks up.
A sticking point for some might be the small arc where Frieren takes on some demons. It's a tone shift from the rest, being more of a fight against the Evil Enemy rather than a quiet meditation on loss, and I'll never be fond of the Innately Evil Fantasy Race trope.
Frieren does try to counteract the implications by saying the demons are just evolved from monsters who would mimic human speech to lure in and eat people. So they're basically monsters! ..But that actually just makes some parts just straight up not make sense (they're clearly sentient, animals don't get together to plot like the demons do, etc). I think what Frieren is going for is the horror of a monster almost indistinguishable from humans that only has interest in eating and killing us, which is has it's basis in mythology (while having it's own loaded implications) but the execution... could be better. There's something uncomfortable whenever a hero's motivation is "wipe all of this sentient race out" and the narrative seemingly bends over backwards to justify that. (And even if the demons sincerely did actually act like animals, I would have a hard time with Frieren declaring she's going to kill every last dragon on earth because some destroyed her village).
I'm told that Frieren isn't necessarily meant to be right about demons, and later on the manga introduces some elements that make the demons much more complex and less 'innately evil'' than that arc has them appear to be, but for now, it's awkward. However, I really did enjoy the amazingly animated fights and bonechilling moments we got out of that arc, and afterward the show went back to doing it's usual exploration of loss thing.
I think Frieren is a well crafted, beautiful and sometimes touching journey though a pastoral fantasy world. There's just a jarring and somewhat poorly executed element as a bump in the road (that nevertheless is a mostly entertaining arc). It also has girls that kick ass and are interesting characters and there's no fanservice bullshit, always a bonus. I'm on board for the rest!
The Apothecary Diaries
Tumblr media
Premise: Maomao works as an apothecary in a land much like 15th century China and she LOVES poisons. After being kidnapped and forced to work as a servant girl in the imperial palace, she solves a mysterious case of poisoning and catches the eye one of the Emporer's top concubines, who makes her a lady in waiting. Thanks to her sharp mind and knowledge of poisons, Mao Mao is unwilling pulled into the cauldron of deception and sabotage that is the inner palace, and there's lots of mysteries to solve...
Tumblr media
The Apothecary Diaries is definitely among my top anime this season, and a lot of it is down to Maomao, who's an incredible character. She's whip smart and refreshingly pragmatic, she's a cynical, bizarre little gremlin who loves poison way too much and she wishes everyone would just leave her alone so she can do weird medical experiments (often on herself). She just wants to keep her head down and not attract any trouble but annoyingly, her sense of justice means she can't ignore people in trouble! She's also disgusted by any man who tries to seduce her (girl, same). She's just plain fun to follow. She's impressive with her deductions, and intensely relatable at times. I love her, and Aoi Yuki does a fantastic job with her deadpan affect.
The anime is beautifully done, and it really gets across the cutthroat world of the Imperial Palace. Maomao lives among the concubines, so a lot of the anime is concerned with how women are treated as disposable, and how they're pitted against each other for the Emperor's approval. Without being direct about it, it shows that being a concubine and palace servant is not a happy life, and even the most favored long for more freedom. Maomao is a girl without any power to change things, so she has to accept the way it is, but does extend kindnesses and helps the women around her when she can.
Then there's Jinshi, who. uh.  He's an interesting character and is slowly developing, but I hate how he treats Maomao a lot of the time. The gag that he can't seduce her is fine enough, but he's super willing to use his social power over her to force her into uncomfortable situations. There's a part where he tries to force Maomao to taste honey from his fingers, backing her up against a wall, and it's so realistic about how it feels to have a man weaponize his higher standing in the workplace to harass you that it's very hard to watch. Maomao sweats and desperately strategizes to figure out how to refuse him without getting beheaded, looks at his assistant for help only for him to ignore her-- it's heartbreaking. The show does acknowledge how messed up with this is. Concubine Gyokuyo comes in to save Maomao and is furious at Jinshi for how he's treating her, Maomao tells off the assistant for ignoring her, and takes pleasure in getting a small bit of revenge on Jinshi later. But it makes me want Jinshi to go away. He's framed as Maomao's potential love interest sometimes, despite the fact she doesn't show any interest in him so far, (though I'm told they haven't gotten together in the English release of the source yet). I hope it doesn't happen (Maomao reads so aroace right now), but who knows, maybe he'll develop a lot.
Jinshi aside, you should also know that this being based off imperial China, pretty horrifying things are presented casually (like a nine year old concubine) though again, the show is well aware the system is messed up. There's also an incredibly quick, weird moment where Maomao tells a rape joke? She obliquely threatens sexual assault to a concubine who's bullying and threatening her (so obliquely I didn't realize at first and thought she was threatening to poison her, which would have been way more in character) and then goes 'whooops it was just a joke'. Nothing like that happens again, but it was completely bizarre and seemed OOC. There's also some "women are like this" dialogue that fits the time period but can still be annoying.
Tumblr media
Overall, The Apothecary Diaries has intrigue, well-developed characters and an impeccable atmosphere, with a fascinating examination of the social constraints placed on women as an undercurrent. It tells a great range of stories, from romantic triumph, to bittersweet tales of recovering from grief, to pure tragedies, MaoMao is extremely lovable and entertaining, and I adore seeing her Sherlock Holmes her way though all the medical mysteries, while squeeing over horrible poison. Definitely check this out!

The Apothecary Diaries
I have caught up with the manga latest chapter and here are my thoughts on the story.
Something was bugging me about this story that made me feel like I am not liking it as much as I would like to. After thinking for a little while I got it. Even if it is ok executed type of Cinderella story, where a girl of a lower social standing finds her prince charming. I still don't like the core idea. This type of idea just has something about itself that makes it not so appealing to me.
But the execution here is ok enough that I get some enjoyment out of it.
First of all, Mao Mao thinks about her position in the world, which I find nice after Yona from Akatsuki no Yona who has little to no thought about her situation and standing in the world she is in, which I found terribly tiresome, because it slowed a lot of things, and some things will probably be left forever unaddressed.
Secondly, in The Apothecary Diaries, stuff that can be easily inferred like the fact that a certain someone is not a eunuch is confirmed after reasonable time, first to the readers, later to the main heroine. So, it is not like one needs to wait god knows how many chapters for some kind of progress in this direction. Which is good because let’s be honest, who expects to see shojo heroine end up with a eunuch? Postponing confirmation and dragging it out would have only damaged the story.
Thirdly, I find the main heroine attitude about not wanting to know believable. I know someone in the army who a long time ago said to me that ignorance is bliss and appeared to have the same attitude.
For these reasons I find the story cute enough and I hope the author will not decide to drag it out more than needed. It can play with medical challenges and palace intrigues for some time still. But I would rather see it end after a reasonable time than dragged out, because it gained popularity.
Jinshi and Mao Mao are ok, but my preference still lies with characters like Li Changge and Ashila Sun from Song of the Long March, where they are both intelligent and the social standing is not an issue and consequently there is not even a threat of drama surrounding this fact.
