Resistance fighters Mélinée and Missak Manouchian to be inducted into the Panthéon

Misak Manushyan and Meline, two children orphaned by the genocide, joined France and continued their struggle  against the Nazi occupiers as part of the FTP-MOI. Armenian resistance fighters Missak and Melinée Manouchian are to be inducted into the Panthéon, a person close to Emmanuel Macron confirmed to France Inter on Saturday.   The pantheonization will take place on 21 February…

Emmanuel Macron giving a speech to honor Missak Manouchian, a communist resistant who fought the nazi occupation and collaborationist regime. An Armenian immigrant. Praising his view of France as a country all about fighting for its freedom, a man who saw life as a constant fight for human rights and liberty. All of that while he refuses to call a genocide a genocide and leaves children be massacred and left to starve just like Missak and Meline's families were.

Honorer la mémoire Hier, le Panthéon a accueilli Missak #Manouchian d'origine arménienne, symbole de la résistance et de la quête de justice. Ses paroles résonnent encore : "Vous avez hérité de la nationalité française, nous l’avons méritée." À ses côtés, son épouse Mélinée nous rappelle que "toute vie est un combat". En ce jour de souvenir, je choisis de rendre hommage à une figure locale, le défunt Pierre Henrique, ancien habitant du quartier des Renardières à Châtellerault. Déporté avec son père en Allemagne, il a bravement échappé à ses bourreaux, mais sa famille a subi l'internement à Montreuil Bellay jusqu'en 1946. Leur courage et leur résilience sont des témoignages vivants de l'histoire douloureuse de notre pays. En leur honneur et en mémoire de toutes les victimes, nous devons perpétuer le devoir de mémoire et œuvrer pour un monde plus juste et inclusif.

Missak Manouchian was an interesting character.

He was a survivor of the 1915 Armenian Genocide who moved to France as many others did.

During the Second World War he joined the French resistance movement against the Nazis, assassinating many Nazis and collaborators while also rescuing and hiding Jews from Nazi persecution.

Poor bugger was sadly arrested in 1943 and executed the following year.

On today's date, 21 February, the Resistance fighters of the RED POSTER (l'Affiche Rouge), were shot in 1944.

This poster is one of the most important, and most notorious propaganda posters of the entire World War II. In late 1943, the French police arrested 23 members of the Manouchian-Boczov group of immigrant communist resistance fighters. They were tortured, tried, and executed. To defuse public anger over the executions, the German propaganda officials published this poster, detailing the nationalities, etchnicities, and 'crimes' of 20 members of the group, including the leader, Manouchian, credited with 150 deaths, 56 assassination attempts and 600 wounded. The captions read, at the top, "Liberators?" and below, "Liberation! By the Army of Crime".

However the poster had the opposite effect: instead of being condemned as "terrorists", the public admired them as freedom fighters ; posters were frequently graffiti'd "DIED FOR LIBERTY & FRANCE", and flowers appeared beneath them. After the war, a poem, set to song and known as "L'Affiche Rouge", became very popular in France.

Miembros del grupo Manouchian en espera de ejecución. El comunista nacido en Armenia Missák Manouchian (sexto desde la derecha) y miembros de su grupo de resistencia mayoritariamente judío estuvieron entre los más activos en los asesinatos contra objetivos nazis en Francia. Los 23 miembros arrestados en noviembre de 1943 fueron ejecutados, uno de ellos, la rumana Olga Blancic, ya que la ley francesa prohibía la ejecución de mujeres, fue ejecutada en Stuttgart. Después de la guerra, Manouchian se convirtió en un héroe nacional en Francia y la Unión Soviética. Hay estatuas de él en varios lugares y muchas calles llevan su nombre.
