Yukine's journey toward acceptance of the life that was robbed of him, this time with finality, exemplifies the emotional and beautifully rendered arc that has defined his character.
Yukine finally accepting the reality of his death. Yukine stepping out from the fridge that contained memories of what was once his life. Yukine freeing himself from the shackles of his trauma. Yukine running to protect the person who cherished him the most in the world. Yukine standing up to an abusive father. Yukine wholeheartedly apologizing. Yukine's growth, and Yato tearing up as he stretches his little arms to pull him for an embrace.
Yukine's gratitude for what Yato did for him is evident throughout the series. He was given a name more precious than any other. He was treated like a human--an ordinary teenage boy. And life after that was one exciting journey after another. Now, Yukine can no longer be entirely consumed by the horrors of his past because he knows that his reality with Yato is so much brighter. Far brighter.
Yukine could break out from that refrigerator because of the true, sincere, and nurturing love shown by the only father figure in his life. Yato has said multiple times throughout the series that Yukine was his priority above all else, and Yukine was the only person he swore to protect the most. Hell, he even went straight to hug him after Yukine apologized for turning into that form! Yato did not need to summon Yukine. Yukine came to protect Yato on his own decision. As he always did.
The journey to their healing will be painful, and this chapter shows that Yato and Yukine will face it together. No more secrets and no more miscommunications. They will help and be by each other's side as they always have, not only as god and shinki but, this time, as family.

its me the "never getting over adam" returnee. i plundered all of your au tags and after the adam vs gods au i cant stop thinking abt how rwby handled adam vs. how this light novel i read handled its adam equivalent
[long rant incoming]
i say "equivalent" very broadly bc the situations and worldbuilding are really different, like for one thing its a medieval-ish setting with no civil rights in general + no real avenues for nonviolence + murder is more standard here, but the gist of it is that theres a demographic with significantly higher magical potential than standard humans and the human policy towards them is either 1. forcibly conscript into military or 2. kill on sight
the protag is a human-passing conscript while his foil, who is kinda like the adam of the series, was born in a significantly more hostile environment and has been on the run since childhood. his schtick is attacking places where people like them are imprisoned and slated for execution, wiping entire towns off the map in the process, and if he doesnt get there in time to save his target he wipes the town off the map in retribution anyway
but while like... while no one LIKES the bloodshed that comes with what he does, the narrative is very generous with him bc even the characters that want him dead acknowledge that he is explicitly a product of his circumstances and there aren't really any viable alternatives for him. for the protag maybe but not for him. and the protag similarly acknowledges that while he, personally, is in a position to negotiate for their people to have legal protections, him doing so won't provide immediate salvation to their people getting lynched the way his foil slaughtering his way up to the gallows does
the foil guy also has a "must exterminate inferior humans" schtick, which is examined and broken down as a sad front for a man whos resigned himself to someday dying in the line of fire without being able to create lasting change for his people.
anyways sometimes i just look at him and then i look at adam and then i look back at him.
[rant end]
also his unique magic is basically just moonslice.
AND ALSO. THE REASON THE ADAM VS GODS AU THING REMINDED ME OF HIM.
in the worldbuilding!!! its actually revealed later that his people were created as part of a powerplay between gods!!! and meant to suffer at the hands of humans!!! however we never get to see his reaction to this because his entire narrative arc got dropped in favor of a romance subplot. which is especially a shame because he IS religious
DROP THE NAME OF THE EQUIVALENT
That worldbuilding actually sounds sick as hell, especially that reveal. But fucking hell why do the romance subplots always shoot massive character development opportunities right in the face 😩

want to get nerdy really fast about all the cool little concepts and ideas that went into hallowed bodies because I fell into the trap of Hating It Until It Was Over & nowwww I remember that I specifically chose to write 90% of it in vignettes to capture a feeling of stunted listlessness in the narrative, that I literallyyyyy kept a character unnamed as a way to thematically emphasize the omnipresent anonymity of men in Lonan’s life (his father, god, Harrison), that I leapt off the ending of BODY BACK that ends in a church (HB starts in a church), that both first chapters in BB and HB have the protagonist yearning for someone to lead VS someone to follow, that similarly, both books delve into the same premise but with vastly different circumstances, that the ending was designed to also be a foil of the end of BB (Harrison walks INTO a church, Lonan walks OUT) & yeahhhh it’s pretty cool lol

Yeah yeah “show don’t tell” get mis-explained and misinterpreted as writing advice a lot and yeah sometimes you SHOULD be telling the reader things however I am unwilling to discard this particular phrase given the number of stories I have encountered that make me want to slap the author across the face with it
#tal reads#this post brought to you by my current audiobook#telling me. REPEATEDLY. in conversation and internal narration#that the mc is this incredible rebel who never follows the rules and who everyone knows likes to live on the edge man#meanwhile in terms of his actual ACTIONS in the story#the most exciting thing this man has done is buy a coffee shop without his family’s approval#(there’s a LITTLE more weight behind this than I’m making it sound bc his family is politically important. but not much.)#there’s this whole conversation he has with one guy#to whom the mc mentions his family wanted him to take religious orders#and the next like. ten lines of dialogue#are all just the guy repeating how UTTERLY UNBELIEVABLE this is and how NO ONE is less suited to that than the mc#and I’m just sitting there like. this guy is neither a serial killer nor afaik a political atheist so like calm the fuck down perhaps#it’s not a bad book overall!!!#but the reputation the author wanted her mc to have is HILARIOUSLY out of step with the character she actually wanted to write him being#if it was all internal narration I might call it a brilliant bit of unreliable narrator of the self-aggrandizing flavor#and take it as an artistic choice#but it’s clear other people think of the mc how he thinks of himself#just with…zero justification in the actual story lmao#every time he gets close to actually doing something seriously risky he’s like ‘but I’m not stupid so I didn’t’#me: WHY DO YOU HAVE A REPUTATION FOR DOING STUPIDLY RISKY THINGS THEN???#anyway if you have to TELL your audience what kind of person your character is#rather than letting their actions speak for themselves#then it’s time to reassess if that character actually is the kind of person you’re describing

Both Halfdan and Rethel have times where the Curse gnaws at their minds and starts pulling them into the same headspace as they had as Husks. Sometimes it's something small like memory problems or zoning out, sometimes they find themselves partially transforming and/or growing aggressive the way they would have with most any unlucky lost soul stumbling upon them in the Chasm.
#hc; halfdan#hc; rethel#//Heightened emotions tends to hasten/worsen these effects#//There are several times where gaps in their memories leave them so stressed it ends up with them shifting back to those forms#//And it is NOT recommendable to approach them in such states#//They WILL lash out thinking they're being attacked#//Halfdan has it slightly easier than Rethel; since he's lucky to have a Vision#//Rethel was shifted back due to Abyss Order's intervention#//So it's easier for her to succumb to it#//There are times they get EXTREMELY claustrophobic; sent into a panic within a certain space or around many others#//Rethel in particular can hardly stand being in crowds for very long before she starts feeling the urge to transform#//As if to hide in that headspace and let whatever her Husk's instincts drive her to do happen#//Will not feel too much remorse once she gets back to herself. Just a 'it was either them or me; and I choose me' & compartmentalize it#//For Halfdan; that happens when he finds himself in the dark & feels trapped in it; transforms to avoid dealing with his severe fear#//And woe betide anybody who runs into him in that state; he will NOT be merciful#//Best to carefully let him ride out the feeling and--carefully--work to change the conditions of the place#//Lighting candles; opening windows--sneak around to do so; bc if he catches you while in That state-#//The best solution is to calm them down/remove them from those situations BEFORE they've transformed#//It's the safest means to help them and will prevent the next time from being worse in the process#//Halfdan constantly has a Crisis abt if this means he is truly more monster than man; with how easily he transforms back into his Husk self#//Rethel has fully embraced she no longer is human; is prolly a monster now; but would strive to do no harm

one thing about me is even if i hated the book i just read i will still be defending the main character while all the goodreads reviewers go on about how whiny and selfish she is
#hi do you not understand she was 18 and did not get to figure out her own identity before becoming the wife of a grown man#do you not understand how postpartum works lol like she did a bad thing leaving the kid for a few months#but like. definitely worse things a struggling mother can do!#like she was doing all that with zero support because neither of them were connected to their parents at that point#and she didn't get to make any friends because as soon as she came into this city she got pulled into his life#and he's certainly not helping because he's always working and he thinks she has it so easy being with a baby all day#even though he absolutely DOES see how impossible it is to calm the kid and YET#and even when she leaves and he has to do shit himself and sees firsthand he still doesn't acknowledge it much#anyway that was a dumb book but it's like i always go looking to reviews for validation on not liking it and i see that shit#and i'm just like no no she was not the issue#it's literally like.........so many books i read where a woman is Going Through It#and is somehow expected to just be graceful and perfect all the time both within the book and by readers??? like what are y'all on#being rightfully unhappy about your situation does not make you whiny even when you're in the wrong sometimes you need to complain! damn!#and also she rarely did complain that's why she had to just leave because if she had said anything to her husband#about her struggles he would have dismissed her and told her to wait it out#god. i think it was very weird that i didn't see mention of the age difference in other reviews#literally. just graduated high school. he is 28. i'm just.

It's not an immediate change. When the party arrived in Baldur's gate, Nøkk became quieter. Bit by bit. You could hear him sing to himself or tell tales by the campfire less and less. If he didn't need it to cast spells, Nøkk's violin would have started to collect dust. The night before the journey to the Bhaal temple was dead silent.

Forever thinking of Vax sitting down, and Kerry standing up, talking to someone and absentmindedly playing with Vax’s hair, not realizing Vax is looking up at him with the biggest heart eyes ever because yes Kerry was angry with him for disappearing, but he’s here and gentle and loving and Vax can’t help it. And when Kerry looks back, Vax is still looking up at him and Kerry realizes he doesn’t think anyone has ever looked at him like that before and Vax is so unashamed doing it and he just kisses his forehead, unsure of what else to do.

ok well what if. i swapped luke and asch. for my time travel au. just at the very end.
#.text#tales of the abyss#listen okay i have some thoughts about it.#mostly in that i think that luke had it planned for a while. to the point where he mightve told jade in advance.#that if at some point the next day in hod. if luke disappears and does not come back. do not look for him.#because i think luke is probably thinking. he has had the chance to say goodbye. but asch has not. and he doesnt want to take that away#for a second time. so he thinks hes doing asch a kindness#whereas asch thinks hes being cruel. like for all theyve been able to make up over while they were trying to get to that point#i dont think asch is capable of understanding luke while in such stressful situations. he acts like he thinks calm under pressure#and maybe he is calm Enough that he knows what to do and how things will end. but that does not change how he actually acts.#and the whole point of the time travel au is that they learn to understand each other. and for asch to understand himself.#and i dont think he'd be able to fully understand luke without a) seeing how his friends react and talk about him#in a setting that isnt The Middle Of Battle or after the events of akzeriuth (ie high stress situations)#b) being given the chance to live longer than him in a situation where luke decided to switch places.#like i truly think the tower of rem. where luke first decided to switch places and die in asch's stead. is when asch started to Understand#am i making ANY sense#anyways its also because there is meaning and symbolism to it (duh!!)#because there is no mystery epilogue man in this au 🫶 he is gone they are both gone. they got their chance to come back#and they used it as wisely as they could. and they got to live. if only for a little bit longer.#oh im remembering. luke's body disappears when he dies. asch is going to disappear into the core alone. nvm au cancelled#wow isnt that symbolic. asch is alone yet again. thumbs down#i know the order of their deaths and especially how they die have meaning (asch dies for luke as luke almost died for him.#he extends his newfound trust into luke as his final action. etc etc) (and luke only getting to be close to asch once hes dead)#but thats already happened and both of those things get to also happen again over the course of Redoing History#as you do in time travel aus#momentarily considered having luke live after the fight with the knights but tbh i dont think either of them could have won that fight#like they are both actively dying. the only thing holding luke together is sticks and glue. and asch is in pain 24/7.#there are dozens of well trained knights fighting with the intent to kill. and they were alone. either of them would have died then#if they fought together it would be different but there just. was not any time#it was too late. and also i ran out of tags goodbye
