I used to enjoy your blog but now you’re all about tearing people down and it’s depressing.
Again...because this still doesn’t seem to be clear...speaking the truth about what’s happened/what is still happening with Nez and Videoranch is not “tearing people down.” The person who is actually tearing people down is the one that you--for whatever incomprehensible reason--keep defending.
Also, you know what’s depressing? Seeing the effect that the person you’re defending has had on the people she fired, on the people who care about those people, and on the fandom as a whole. What’s depressing is seeing someone who has hurt others so deeply being able to still fool people into thinking she’s a victim/good person/remotely competent at her job. None of those things are true. What is true is what has been posted here on the NP Tumblr, and in other places by other people who just got tired of being silent and being afraid.
What’s also depressing is seeing Videoranch turn into one individual’s personal, exclusive fan club. Videoranch was started to promote other artists, to share music, to be a place where fans would gather to meet and mingle and make friends, and a haven for Nez’s own special brand of weirdness in general. It’s none of that now. It is literally sitting empty because this person you are defending has no interest in keeping it alive, no desire to make fans happy, let alone allow them anywhere near where they could interact with Nez the way many folks used to in years past. Yet this person remains in a position of power and control, gradually eroding Nez’s image and damaging his legacy day-by-day, alienating his fanbase, and generally ignoring the misery she has inflicted on so many.
The people voicing concern and wanting something done are the ones who genuinely care about Nez. Not the ones who are supposed to looking out for him but are just trying to further their own agenda. That’s what’s depressing...

Hi! So I was watching TCM before school, and I was wondering, why did Greta Garbo leave Hollywood? And when approximately did she decide to leave? Thanks!
This is a fairly complicated question, because Greta didn’t necessarily decide one day to retire and never make another film again. The beginning of the end was when she made the film Two-Faced Woman in 1941, a romantic comedy where she played a double role, sang, and danced the rumba. It was entirely wrong for her and critics destroyed her because of it, though it did make some money at the box office. Most people incorrectly state that this was the single reason why she retired, but to quote director George Cukor, “People often glibly say that the failure of Two-Faced Woman finished Garbo's career. That's a grotesque oversimplification. It certainly threw her, but I think that what really happened was that she just gave up. She didn’t want to go on."
Throughout the forties and the fifties there is still evidence that Garbo had every intention to return to films. She even signed on to do a few, like The Girl from Leningrad in 1942 which never came to pass because of MGM, and signed a contract in 1948 to work on another picture based on a Balzac novel, which failed to get the necessary financing for its production. She was offered many more parts throughout the 40s and 50s, like the lead in Sunset Boulevard, but turned almost all of them down. When she did accept, she would usually still leave the project afterwards for one reason or another. She didn’t talk to anyone that she knew about why she left Hollywood until four years before her passing, saying “I was tired of Hollywood. I did not like my work. There were many days when I had to force myself to go to the studio… I really wanted to live another life."
I hope that answers your question! I learned a few things myself when I did some research about the specifics of her retirement. Thanks as always for asking me!

"Layers of blankets are needed here"
“Who’s says I’m sharing?” Micky asked, raising an eyebrow.
Currently, he was sitting on the couch covered by an igloo of blankets. The cold snap that no one thought would happen in Malibu actually did happen and there was actually frost on the windows of the pad.
Micky immediately decided that he needed to be proactive in combating the cold and promptly stole every blanket in the place to create his shelter.

Karen had the voice of an angel. I absolutely love her. I only wish she could've found happiness for herself as well.
Me too.  She made so many people happy, and often it was at her own expense, since she prolonged getting help for her problems because she wanted to help everyone else first.

Did Peter really tell the draft board he was gay to get out of going to Vietnam? (Side note, I read a VERY interesting Torksmith story about this scenario and I'm screaming right now 😆)
Hi there! Well, we’ve actually received this question before. Accounts vary, but some sources say that Peter and the Army had an ‘agreement’ that he was “unacceptable” and “crazy.” Unfortunately, in those days, "gay” and “crazy” were synonymous, as being gay was still classified as a mental illness in the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) at the time. So that might have been what was meant by “crazy.” But supposedly yes, Peter did indeed tell the draft board that he was gay.

Was Peter Lawford worried about his singing abilities in “Good News”?
I love this question because even thinking about Peter Lawford singing makes me laugh!
Honestly, Peter didn’t want to be a part of Good News in the first place. He felt that he was miscast in a musical and knew that he couldn’t sing or dance, but at the end of the day his contract required him to do the film and doing a musical for MGM was par for the course at the time no matter what your abilities were. He focused on what he could do (which was act and look good next to MGM’s singing glamour girls), and he worked really hard to improve his singing and dancing skills for the film. Of course we all know that his performance wasn’t quite up to standard in the end, and he refused to be cast in a musical after that despite having a huge amount of respect for everyone in that field of entertainment. He would joke about it in later years and laugh it off, and it’s really funny to hear him talk about it as he has a great sense of humor!
Thanks so much for your question, lovely! Good News is definitely a guilty pleasure film for me, and honestly the historical inaccuracies bug me more than Peter Lawford does in that movie.

Hi! I saw the inquiry about Peter's name, and I thought I'd add to it! I was watching his performance on YouTube for the channel called Wolfgang's vault, in which he actually says his last name is Thorkelson but with the silent "h", so more like "Tork-elson". Hope that helps!
Ah! Well, that solves it, then. Thank you for helping to clear that up! @thecultofclassics, here is a definitive answer for you!

Okay, but can we please take a moment out of all the awful drag Peter wore to appreciate his natural good looks beneath it all? He's always been beautiful and very handsome to many of us, and I don't think he gets nearly enough appreciation as he should! I mean yeah, Davy and the others are great looking guys, but Peter has this angelic quality to his smile that I just adore! (I also feel like his looks don't get talked about as much, but maybe that's just me! 😉)
Absolutely! Well, that’s the entire point, really...that Peter wasn’t “pretty” the way Micky was, but he was “man-pretty,” and the costume people clearly didn’t know how to properly dress/accentuate the features of a handsome man such as Peter or turn him into an attractive woman. But yes, Peter was quite attractive back in the ‘60s, no question about it, and definitely had that dimple working overtime for him. Here’s a few favorite Peter pics...

Okay, I dunno if you saw it, but on Annabel Jones' newest Instagram story she straight up CALLS OUT Davy's widow Jessica. Like, ouch. She appeared to be watching "Deadly Women", and zoomed in on the woman in the frame and said "I thought that was my dad's widow". Like Oh. My. God. Do people generally dislike her? I haven't heard good things.
Oh, boy. Well, yes, there is a very large consensus among Monkees fans (especially Davy fans) that Jessica was/is the Antichrist and had something to do with Davy’s death. There had been allegations of her abusing him for years before he died (a Google search for “Davy Jones Jessica Pacheco abuse” yields almost 60,000 results), and many believe that her antics and behavior caused Davy so much stress that he ended up having that heart attack.
There was a great deal of controversy around Jessica’s behavior at the time of Davy’s death, too: The expedience with which he was cremated, not bringing his ashes to where he had wanted to be buried, and so on. Davy’s daughters also do not care for Jessica (that’s putting it mildly), which is evident by her entire lack of involvement in DJEMF, among other things.
Since 2012, Jessica has pretty much vanished from the radar, but theories about her role in Davy’s death still abound. We at NP don’t subscribe to or believe in perpetuating any one theory in particular, because that only adds fuel to the gossip fire. What really matters is the grief of Davy’s daughters and the loved ones he left behind, all of whom have hopefully begun to find peace and closure.
Finally, for those curious, here is the Instagram story to which @mamatork is referring:

In response to your question, totally! It's a psychedelic trip for the ages. I do recommend learning a bit more on their background before getting into the movie, though. They really wanted to break away from their TV show and do something new and crazy. If you're into 60s cinema that's one long acid trip (with bonus super sexy Peter Tork) then go for it!
I’m definitely down! I’ve been getting into 60s movies, so it’s about time I get more into 60s music too! Thanks a bunch for the recommendation, I always love getting questions and such from you! ☺

What do you think of the Monkees' movie HEAD?
I honestly haven’t seen that one! I’ve definitely heard of The Monkees but I’m still trying to get into older music. What do you think of it? Is it something I should see?

Why do news sources or interviewers always seem to neglect or just simply not know that Peter plays about 5 or more instruments? Do they just not find out things about him before they interview him with the Monkees or solo? I hate the fact that everyone thinks he's just some actor on a TV show and he always has to explain himself. I've been watching interviews on YouTube and in almost EVERY one of them the interviewer seems to be unaware of his actual musical capability.
Well, a large part of it is because most interviews/articles are aimed at casual Monkees fans, rather than hardcore Monkees fans like many of us (as we would already know this information). Most casual Monkees fans associate the Monkees with Davy or Micky (being the main lead singers/”faces” of the band). So Peter (like Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd as Merry and Pippin, respectively, in Lord of the Rings) becomes Indistinguishable Backup Monkee (Hobbit) #2. There’s also the persistent image/stereotype of the Monkees as “four actors who didn’t know how to play instruments” when the show first started, which is so pervasive that the average journalist may not think to question it. Another part to consider is that Peter often deliberately seeks to mention these things in interviews. When he’s asked about the TV show, for example, he’ll frequently use the phrase, “the Peter Tork character,” in an effort to distance/distinguish himself from “the dummy” that he had to portray. But ever since the ‘60s, he’s seemed to have this need to “prove” himself, and (from having personally watched a whole lot of Peter interviews), he seems to enjoy purposely saying how musically accomplished he is, at least to some degree. So those are some thoughts on why Peter’s musical talents may not always be known by some news sources/interviewers. Hope this helps to answer your question!

Is it also true that Betty Hutton left Hollywood because of how terribly she was treated after taking Judy Garland's part in Annie Get Your Gun after one of Garland's breakdowns prevented her from doing it?
Yes, this is true! I watched her discussion of those events with Robert Osborne on Private Screenings. It’s really unfortunate because Judy didn’t want the part in the first place and it was basically Betty’s dream role. She dove into her research for it and ended up doing a great job from what I understand (I haven’t actually seen the film but I really want to!), but the cast and crew, especially her costar Howard Keel, treated her terribly because she replaced Judy. She did do The Greatest Show on Earth after that, another one that she put her heart and soul into that gave her great joy, but the backlash from playing Annie and her desire to reconnect with her children resulted in her departure from Hollywood.
I love this question, and I want to see more of Betty’s movies because of that interview. The clips that they played during it showed off such a great energy and she was so adorable!
Ask me questions about Old Hollywood!
