Oh look it's all of my favourite characters: A floating cat, a cloud and a guy that doesn't actually exist and was just collectively imagined by a whole town

OK, so I'm listening to Night Vale a second time through from the beginning now, because after bingeing the whole series in two weeks I was going to go into withdrawal otherwise--this is the first piece of media I've fallen this hard and this fast for in quite a while. And I just got to episode 74.
Specifically I just got to the bit in episode 74 where Cecil mentions that Malik Herrera (the football kid who was collectively imagined by the town) has taken up carving artwork into the trees in the Whispering Forest, and says that Herrera is immune to the whole turning into a tree thing since he doesn't actually exist.
Which of course, the first time I heard it, I was just like lol, ok, that tracks with Night Valean logic.
But... over a hundred episodes later, we find out that there is at least one other person in Night Vale who can walk through the Whispering Forest safely, and it's. Cecil.
Why are you crying when you don't even exist?
SO ANYWAY, (1) augh, and (2) if anyone needs me, I expect I'll just be over here staring blankly at the ceiling for a while 🙃

We return you now to a safe place. The Street Cleaners have passed. Street Cleaning Day, as so many other days, is behind us. We emerge from hiding spots, from secret locations, from places under other places. We step out into the street, and it is as though it is brand new to us. Certainly, it is cleaner now, but that is not all. We have survived all the way from birth to this very moment, and we look at each other, and some of us start laughing and others start weeping and one or two of us break out into a wordless humming song, and all of us mean the exact same thing.
(Welcome to Night Vale: Episode 15 — Street Cleaning Day)
Somewhere the tiny people of the city below have arrived in Night Vale, and are beginning their war against us, having already shown themselves capable of murder. Somewhere a man in a tan jacket is whispering into the ears of our mayor, and we do not know what agenda they pursue. […] This all happens, somewhere else. But here, Carlos and I sat on the trunk of that car, his car, looking together at the lights up in the sky above the Arby’s. They were beautiful in the hushed twilight, shimmering in a night sky already coming alive with bits of the universe.
(Welcome to Night Vale: Episode 25 — One Year Later)
But.... In spite of all this, coach al-Mujaheed called a pep rally last Friday, in a gesture of support for Malik Herrera. This, as any time, is when we should join as a town, despite the game that never was. […] Everyone was sad, and everything was perfect. We stayed late into the night under the fluorescent corona of the bleachers, eating damp barbecue, wearing our orange ponchos, and telling those tales we wanted to tell to those loved ones who have left us, telling them instead to those who we currently or may eventually love. Tears were hardly noticeable on our rain-streaked cheeks by the time we said our goodbyes.
(Welcome to Night Vale: Episode 56 — Homecoming)
And they both take the hand of the person they love, and Amber smiles at Wilson and Wilson smiles at Amber and everyone smiles at everyone and at everything and no one is okay, exactly, but we’re outside and we’re smiling and that is a kind of perfection of its own.
(Welcome to Night Vale: Episode 57 — The List)
Night Vale isn't a single unified thing that can love or be loved. It's just the name slapped onto a set of borders and rules that some old bureaucrats [..] devised centuries ago. But they don't live here anymore. We do. I do, and I can make it worth it. I can’t just leave it, I have to live it. Live it and make it better. For myself. For Carlos. For my friends. […] And for you, listeners. We will together celebrate another homecoming game. We will together survive another street cleaning. We will together… well we will see.
(Welcome to Night Vale: Episode 70B — Review)
Our reality is badly damaged, and the only thing keeping it together is our acknowledgement, finally, of this strange town that we live in. No more denial. We must see ourselves clearly or risk losing ourselves forever. Angels are real. Our town is a deeply weird place. We know and acknowledge that it is a deeply weird place. There are dotted lines and arrows in the sky. And I love my family, and I love my brother Steve. He was right about everything. He always has been.
(Welcome to Night Vale: Episode 110: Matryoshka)
This is my work, listeners. My work is to speak to you all. To talk you through the day. To murmur you into the night. Settling in to be another clear and pretty evening here in Night Vale, this weird, weird town. I hope all of you out there have someone to sleep through it with. I know I do.
(Welcome to Night Vale: Episode 111 — Summer 2017, Night Vale, USA)
Carlos and I hold each other through the town, passing two teenage boys dressed in scraps of of airplane upholstery, gripping tightly each others’ faces. We help a lost toddler find his parents. We clear broken glass from streets. We walk home. We shade our eyes from the setting sunset which kindles through a hilltop cleft. We talk nonstop about today about tomorrow about yesterday about every possible moment, just talking, and talking, because we almost lost our talk forever. We do not hear the returning echo of sirens across the valley. We do not hear anything but ourselves. Stay tuned next for a silence that is all your own.
(Welcome to Night Vale: Episode 167 — Echo)
And I say: “Look at the clouds in the sky. They mean nothing, and yet they are there and they are pretty. Isn’t that nice?”
(Welcome to Night Vale: Episode 181 — C****s)
The day after Valentine’s we said “it’s over” but we did not believe it was over. We believed it would never be over, that we would always be living the same sad and terrifying minute, breathing the same stale air thick with our own fear. But we were not in that moment anymore. But we were, some part of us, still. The day after Valentine’s was a rebuilding, a recovery, a return to form, a back to business. Bury the bodies and stand up the fences, it’s time to move on.
(Welcome to Night Vale: Episode 202 — The Day After the Day)
“What do we do now?” I asked him. He smiled, “First we go home, eat meals together, remember that we are a community, and that we are better together than we are alone.”
(Welcome to Night Vale: Episode 230 — Carlos, Explained)

so sick and twisted that there was an episode where cecil was hoping to go to a homecoming game to get a chance to ask to the ghost of his mother about major events from his childhood that he can't remember but the game was cancelled because a player was (maybe erroneously) declared to not actually exist. bet he felt really really normal reporting about malik herrera.

This just in. There's news breaking of a possible scandal involving one of the Night Vale football players: senior running back Malik (mal-LEEK) Herrera. According to an investigative report by Leann Hart of the Night Vale Daily Journal, Herrera doesn't actually exist. Like he’s right there when you look at him, and he plays in a team of other players, so it would make more sense for him to be there than not, but Hart claims in her report that the all-district running back is, in fact, completely fabricated. Anonymous sources say that Herrera is collectively imagined by the Night Vale High School fan base - a shared dream in the form of a boy who won the district rushing title the past two years and was freshman of the year 3 seasons ago.
thinking about this wrt janet's assertion that night vale are experiencing mass hysteria...

WTNV quick rundown - 56 - Homecoming
I've decided that when it gets to around the time that the novel was released (soon!), I'm going to do a post purely about the 'main plot points/reveals' and then a secondary one of just 'cool facts I learn skimming it again'. This is for my own sanity trust me. This episode features Will Wheaton as Earl Harlan. It is autumn, and nature is vanishing. It is autumn, and nature is beautiful. Welcome to Night Vale.
In NV, the homecoming game is a literal homecoming, as in, dead citizens come home briefly for the half-time whilst the marching bands go spear hunting for dinner. Cecil is hoping to talk to his mother, especially since finding the cassettes he didn't understand and also he has become hermit-like (his words) now that Carlos isn't around and needs to get out.
His plan is jeopardised by accusations that one of the players, Malik Herrera, isn't actually real (which goes against rule 12, article 6).
Unfortunately, since his reality can't be proved until after the game would be scheduled, the whole game is forfeited and thus Cecil does not get to see his mother. To make things worse, a terrible storm rains down for five whole days, which would have resulted in a postponement of the game even if Malik was real. He's determined to be tangible, but not real post-storm. Even so, Coach Nazr al-Mujaheed and many other citizens, including Cecil, support his rights to play even if he's not real and get together after the storm to talk and stand up for him.
Malik says he doesn't even like football, but can't pursue his artist career unless the town collectively imagines it for him.
Weather: "Understood" by Y.R Generation yrgeneration.bandcamp.com
Earl Harlan has come onto the show to teach us how to make tiramisu. In NV fashion, it's a very strange version for example: eggs have teeth, organs and 'debris' in them, mascarpone is a kind of fish and nutmeg are a kind of creature which needs to be killed, cleaned and have a thick vein running up it's spine removed before it's safe to use though 'deveined' versions are available to buy. Tiramisu is also apparently quite poisonous.
Earl also reveals that he was literally 19 for many years, maybe even centuries and that he can't remember what year he graduated. Cecil also can't remember the year they graduated (which they did together, having been very close friends) even though he remembers that they stayed up late drinking a case of warm orangemilk and telling dirty jokes about the moon until the sunrise scared them off.
Earl says he all of a sudden stopped being 19 and was instead an adult with a kid, a house and a job. Cecil doesn't seem to understand, or want to understand, what Earl is actually saying.
There is a Night Vale Seismological Society, who schedule/carry out municipally-planned earthquakes. They don't really know what you're supposed to do to to keep safe during an earthquake and don't even know what's going to happen on Saturday, just that it'll be cool.
Staples encourages you to worship old gods.
The Red Mesa football team is called the Red Mesa Ant Carpenters.
There is a citizen called Inez Cordova whose son has started to walk. Teddy Williams finally rolled a 450 bowling. There are citizens called Wilson Levy and Amber Akinyi who tell Cecil a whispered story about their vacation to Luftnarp. Cecil talks to Diane Crayton about Carlos and is introduced to her son Josh (a shapeshifter) , who is first in the form of a monarch butterfly but later is a motorbike.
Nazr al-Mujaheed wears a goat-horned headpiece and comically large sunglasses. He also has tattoos of cat eyes on his eyelids.
I fell asleep easily that night. I dreamed of sun, of being with Carlos again, of a lighthouse that was not a lighthouse, of a world that is not anything at all. Perhaps a dream of things yet to come. Stay tuned next for a radio program that only dogs can hear. And as always, good night, Night Vale. Good night.

This list includes a list of 5 anthologies coming out between now, and the end of the year! I am based in the UK and therefore all dates and relevant links I have found reflect this!
In These Hallowed Halls: A Dark Academia Anthology
Published by Titian Books on September 12th
Look I have not really enjoyed any dark academia I have read, nor have read from any of these authors so this is a risky choice. However, this is the season for dark academia and I am intrigued. This collection of 12 stories includes well known authors of the genre (sub genre?) Olivie Blake & M.L. Rio as well as David Bell, Susie Yang, Layne Fargo, J.T. Ellison, James Tate Hill, Kelly Andrew, Phoebe Qynne, Kate Weinberg, Helen Grant & Tori Bovalino.
Goodreads // Storygraph // Amazon //
Peach Pit
Published by Dzanc Books on September 12th
A collection of 16 stories about and following unlikeable, unhinged and monstrous women. Which basically sums up some of my favourite types of short story collections. With story description makes it sound similar to other collections such as Out There with a bit of Cursed Bunny. Edited by Molly Llewllyn and Kristel Buckly featuring stories from; Lauren Groff, Deesha Philyaw, K-Ming Chang, Megan Giddings, Sarah Rose Etter, Chaya Bhuvaneswar, Alicia Elliott, Chana Porter, Alice Ash, Maisy Card, Vanessa Chan, Chantal V. Johnson, Amada Leduc, Alison Rumfitt, Yah Yah Scholfield & Aliya Whitely.

Mermaids Never Drown
Published by Titian Press (UK) / Feiwel & Friends (US) on September 26th
From the team behind Vampires Never Get Old (which you may know about from the Story ‘First Kill which became a Netflix show) comes a second Young Adult collection exploring mermaids. Edited again by Zoraida Córdova and Natalie C. Parker and featuring many well known and beloved YA authors such as Darcie Little Badger, Kalynn Bayron, Preeti Chhibber, Rebecca Coffindaffer, Julie C. Dao, Maggie Tokuda-Hall, Adriana Herrera, June Hur, Katherine Locke, Kerri Maniscalco, Julie Murphy, Gretchen Schreiber, and Julian Winters. I am particularly excited to see Darcie Little Badger who I have loved both their long work (Elatose) and their short fiction (in Love Beyond Body Space and Time) and also I am intrigued by June Hur who I have only read Historical mystery work from so this will be a different spin.

Out There Screaming: An Anthology of New Black Horror
Published by Random House on October 3rd
An anthology I surprisingly only found out about when putting together this list. Out There Screaming is a collection of stories edited by writer and director Jordan Peele. It is an anthology of ‘all-new stories of Black horror, exploring not only the terrors of the supernatural but the chilling reality of injustice that haunts our nation. Alongside an introduction from Jordan Peele it also features stories by Erin E. Adams, Violet Allen, Lesley Nneka Arimah, Maurice Broaddus, Chesya Burke, P. Djèlí Clark, Ezra Claytan Daniels, Tananarive Due, Nalo Hopkinson, N.K. Jemisin, Justin C. Key, L.D. Lewis, Nnedi Okorafor, Tochi Onyebuchi, Rebecca Roanhorse, Nicole D. Sconiers, Rion Amilcar Scott, Terence Taylor, and Cadwell Turnbull.

The Book of Witches
Published by HarperVoyager on August 1st (US) and October 26th (UK)
Edited by Jonathan Strahan the editor from The Book of Dragons and featuring art from artist Alyssa Winans throughout This is large collection focusing around witches featuring 29 stories and poems from well known contemporary SFF authors; Linda Addison, C.L. Clark, P Djeli Clark, Indrapramit Das, Amal El Mohtar, Andrea Hairston, Millie Ho, Saad Hossain, Kathleen Jennings, Alaya Dawn Johnson, Cassandra Khaw, Fonda Lee, Darcie Little Badger, Ken Liu, Usman T. Malik, Maureen F. McHugh, Premee Mohamed, Garth Nix, Tobi Ogundiran, Tochi Onyebuchi, Miyuki Jane Pinckard, Kelly Robson, Angela Slatter, Andrea Stewart, Emily Teng, Sheree Renée Thomas, Tade Thompson, and E. Lily Yu. This is a must pick up for me for two reasons, I enjoyed reading The Book of Dragons last year, and found some new favourite short stories, and two it includes some of my favourite authors. So even if I only enjoy their stories this would be a win for me!

ZOETIC STAGE Announces Casts & Creative Teams for THE FINSTROM FESTIVAL OF NEW WORK
The readings are free and open to the public.
Tumblr media
by Stephi Wild
May. 12, 2022
The casts and creative teams have been assembled for Zoetic Stage's second annual Finstrom Festival of New Work which will be co-presented with and hosted at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami, live and in person in the Peacock Foundation Studio. The readings are free and open to the public. Tickets will be available at arshtcenter.org beginning Wednesday, May 11 at 12pm/EST.
The winning plays are One Stone: The Story of Mileva Marić and Albert Einstein by Kathleen Cahill, Effect If Not Intent by David Rosenberg, Sibling Rivalries Or, Spooks in the Ivory Tower by Marcus Scott, The Public Execution of The American President by Nick Valdes.
Prior to the readings, each winning playwright will spend almost 20 hours workshopping their play with directors, dramaturges, and actors. "The goal of this year's festival is to aid playwrights in a creative rehearsal space to move their play one step closer to a final draft," says Zoetic Stage Artistic Director Stuart Meltzer.
"We were looking for plays that move theater forward - the plays of tomorrow. I believe we've found them. These writers took risks, challenging the styles, themes and topics that reflect the world we live in today but in fresh and exciting ways," says Festival Coordinator Gabriell Salgado.
Casts, creative teams and showtimes are listed below:

It dramatizes the uncredited role she played in Einstein's breakthrough achievements and raises questions about how gender affects the success or failure of talent. It is a historical play which leads us to ask if it is any easier for women in science today.

I'm so sad for Malik though, he doesnt even like football but he is tied to what Night Vale imagines for him. I hope someone can imagine him as an artist so he can follow his dream.

Astrology & Fashion; Capricorn
The main components in an individual’s chart to signify style is the Ascendant, Sun, Moon, and Venus. The Ascendant being the self, our identity, and appearance. The Sun being our lifestyle. Our general expression. The Moon being ourselves in emotional and vulnerable expressions (important component as we need to feel comfortable in what we wear; we self-identify with certain styles.) Venus being our aesthetic expression and is closely tied to our Sun sign’s expression.
CAPRICORN AESTHETICS
Wool, cashmere, suede, linen, hemp, smart, business casual, classic, chic, timeless, camel, beige, tan, greys, blacks, white, off-white, jewel tones, sharp, rigid, structured, steam pressed, pleats, vintage, tweed, corduroy, sharp collars, tucked shirts, rolled sleeves, pointed toe shoes, scarves, polos, turtlenecks, elongated silhouette, status, power.
HIGH FASHION
Looking to high fashion for Capricorn influences, probably the most influential Capricorn designer we see today is Alexander Wang. Though Wang has very prominent Scorpio influences which you can see in his work, he still portrays very Capricorn/Saturn elements in his designs. There is a quote from him where he mentions the vision of his fall 2019 line is a “celebration of the American hustle. We’re taking stereotypes of class and wealth and trying to remix them, giving status symbols a new sensibility.” Hustle. Class. Status. Words that could easily describe the essence of Capricorn fashion. Capricorns dress to demonstrate their status. They dress smart, chic, and ready to work. They want people to know they’re the responsible leader in the room, the one you go to to ask all of the questions! Capricorns like to appear tall and tend to dress in ways to elongate their silhouette. A key favourite to Capricorns are long, classic coats, which you can see showcased in Wang’s designs.

Capricorns also don’t shy away from dressing sporty and know how to dress it up to look professional. A good example is the middle image above. Also, Capricorn women who love their body tend to show off their midriff quite a bit, they really favour styling sports bras. Capricorns also love sharp collars, which you can see below in Wang’s designs.

STREET FASHION
When Capricorn fashion hits the streets, it thrives, as a Capricorn would want it to. Influencer and Pinterest-like trends can be seen quite a bit in the streetwear. Sometimes vintage pieces, but they have to stay in the framework of being chic and timeless. Capricorns tend to favour timeless pieces such as trench-coats, pea-coats, reefer coats, polos, slacks, suede, tweed, and linens. They favour the rigid points seen in high fashion such as pointed-toe shoes and sharp collars. They tend to stick to very neutral colours like greys, blacks, off-whites, bieges, camels, and jewel tones. Capricorns also tend to favour fall fashion, as this would be the best time to wear the long coats they favour as well their tendency to layer. They don’t usually wear a lot of extravagant jewelry, they much prefer carefully selected pieces or delicate pieces. They know how to dress up casual pieces and how to dress down formal; maybe Nike sneakers, sweatpants, but with a blazer? They’ll pull it off, no doubt.
