To Donald Trump on his birthday...

I never thought myself capable of despising anyone, I spent years dealing with my brother’s drunken antics and my sister’s selfish whims, and I still didn't let that push me over the edge; you have proved me wrong. I remember how much I loved my country, still abundantly aware of its flaws, but still so hopeful for a brighter future; now, I struggle to see that future. Yet, I have to thank you for opening my eyes to the hate that has ingrained itself into our country and the hearts of many of my fellow Americans. You call for violence against those who oppose you, stomp on our nation’s Constitution, and engage in hateful rhetoric. You spew racism, sexism, xenophobia, and promote blind nationalism at every turn, and your followers eat it up. The lack of empathy you display at every turn and your followers' pure devotion in spite or perhaps because of these qualities makes me question whether our nation will emerge from this catastrophe.

Yet, perhaps despite everything, I still see the United States as an amazing dream not fully realized. That dream can only be fully realized if there is true equality and justice, which means taking responsibility for the wrongs our country has done and doing better going forward. I am a firm believer that we, as people and as a community, need to keep growing, learning, and progressing. Instead, we have stagnated for so long we are regressing. We need to stop looking to the faux golden windows of the past, polished by time and bitterness and start working today so that tomorrow can be better than it has ever been before. It's a dream I am willing to fight for and to live for.

So, happy birthday Donald Trump, I wish for you to gain compassion, wisdom, enlightenment, and a new job; but most of all I wish for you to witness the United States rise out of the ashes of your fascist schemes to grow to be a better nation than it ever was before. One that values human rights, with liberty and justice for all.

Oh, and Happy Obama Day!
