I think that's so interesting cause Martin must be fuming, cause he knows Jon the most, hes the only one who put in the work but for free, with no work put in, basira has managed to see a side of him that even he didn't manage to see but maybe she has a point, maybe he was so busy taking care of him that he forgot to actually listen to him

Either way it's frustrating and bittersweet

It's quite funny what he lets himself be frustrated about. His feelings about Jon can't be spoken out loud but he'll let himself shout about other stuff, he's built his whole persona over Not Getting Mad which means hes taken seriously when he chooses to let himself be mad

the conversation between martin and basira in mag 88 is goddamn hilarious to me like martin’s trying to be nice, he’s under a lot of stress with jon on the run, but then this exchange happened:

BASIRA: I actually thought I misjudged him. Hell, I liked the guy.

MARTIN: Wait, you mean… like you…

BASIRA: [sputtering] Oh, what? Urgh, no! Why does everyone think that?

MARTIN: Right, yeah, ‘cause I don’t actually… I don’t actually think he…

It sucks that Martin is the last person on Basira's list when he's clearly running the Archives in Jon's absence. The K in Martin K Blackwood stands for King of Being Underestimated.

Because you've spent two seasons establishing yourself as Mom Friend when you should have been making a name for yourself as the Office Bitch.

The terrible reality of cops being allowed to just go missing and do whatever they fuck they want with no oversight aside, if I'm getting my dates right Daisy could have been MIA for anywhere from a fortnight to a month. Basira must be really worried to be trying to track her, so it's unusual for her to spend this long on a hunt. That's interesting to me because I wouldn't exactly categorise Jon as a master criminal; I can't imagine he's so much more difficult to track down than everyone else she's killed. So why is it taking her so long? Maybe she was really thrown by Elias and is off her game?

Good detective work Martin!

I need to congratulate him one last time because he's about to throw all his brains out the window.

i can see why this episode became a meme lol. it is almost comical in it's obsession with this one super simple word, but there's actually a ton of stuff that happens here

first of, i want to once again remind everyone that jon and basira actually got along really well and would've been great friends had all of this bullshit not gone down. she recognizes when he jokes! they're both pretty subtle people in their expressions (or, well, jon was. he gets less and less so as the show goes on) and they're able to tell when the other is being humorous. also, basira being able to imediatley know what daisy is planning to do shows how close they truly are and that basira is, in fact, aware of how violent daisy can get

as for the statement itself, for being a statement all about the earth, it's not very burried-like. people have already pointed out that the relentless need to know is very much a characteristic of the eye, but i also feel like the absolute obsession reminds me a lot of how jane prentiss spoke of the corruption. a lot of avatars speak of their respective entities similarly, but this felt especially corruption-eque

finally, if jon and basira would've been great friends if things were not so awful, then martin and melanie would also have been. i love them. they're a great duo, and even if tensions are high and she's quick to become defensive they mesh very well

i love that the "lower" entities, filth and choke, so pointedly hate the institute

i think part of it is the sort of entity color wheel that puts the eye in opposition to fears that thrive in obfuscation and darkness

but i also think it's a direct opposition to the sort of structure and process that beholding has... the institute and its sister sites are really the only organizations of their kind

even the dark with the people's church and the desolation with the cult of the lightless flame, they're organizations sure but they don't have the expansive formal structure of the institute

and it would make sense that the more "primitive" fears would be so totally opposed to that sort of structure, and would feel an innate need to tear it down

to return it to the dirt
