[JURY INTERVIEW] MAD STARS, WHAT AN EXPERIENCE
Tumblr media
MAD STARS attracts attendees from every corner of the Asia-Pacific region as well as jury members from places as far-flung as Mexico and Sub-Saharan Africa.
We wanted to know what they thought of last year’s festival, so we asked juries from countries near and far.
Tumblr media
Kapil Bhimekar, creative director, Leo Burnett
MAD STARS was a highly inspiring and enriching experience. I was pleasingly surprised in so many ways, be it the quality of work, the venue, or even the whole organization of the event itself, it was so well done.
The thing that especially stood out for me was the people of Busan. I have never felt such warmth. The people from the organizing committee, as well as the locals around the town, were extremely helpful. The city overall has a beautiful welcoming vibe to it.
Tumblr media
James Keng Lim, director of creative strategy, GCI Health
From a purpose and their entries model point of view, MAD STARS deserves all the credit. It embodies the ethos that the maddest ideas can change the world, independent of the size of the proverbial purse strings. I also want to take this opportunity to congratulate and commend the organizers and the relentless work done by the staff.
The festival ran like clockwork. It was well-organized and thoughtfully put together. I think I speak for all the juries when I say it is a festival all of us want to be a part of. That’s a huge compliment and validation of the great work done to put this festival together.
Tumblr media
Rimantas Stanevičius, creative director, Milk
This was my first time at MAD STARS. While the festival typically doesn't extend invitations to preliminary jurors, my enthusiasm for a complete experience led me to secure a grant from the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture. This allowed me to travel to Busan and represent our local Art Directors Club through podcasting.
I had the privilege of meeting tons of amazing people from the industry, forging new connections, and rekindling old ones. For example, I had a chance to reconnect with fellow alumni from the Berlin School of Creative Leadership. I’d say my time there was well-spent, producing over two hours of interviews talking to Rey Kim of Mad Stars, Gabriel Lora, Jesse Wong, Becky McOwen Banks, and Mohammad Akrum Hossain among others.
Tumblr media
Nurlan Satarov, creative director & creative group director, Cheil Worldwide
This was my third time as a juror since 2019, and I've noticed that the festival's scale and influence keep growing with each passing year.  What sets MAD STARS apart from other awards shows is that it’s free to enter. And guess what? They've got a ton of entries that have won big awards at Cannes Lions, One Show, Spikes, and D&AD (the toughest festival to win, in my opinion). It's awesome spotting hidden little gems amidst the massive cases. Making it onto the list of award-winning works alongside those giants is a sweet deal, even if you land on the shortlist.
I genuinely enjoy heading to Busan and connecting with fantastic folks at Mad Stars. It's such a cozy and welcoming event. Returning to the festival in person after the pandemic was especially wonderful. There's just something special about being able to participate in person and connect with people face to face again. There's no denying it, festivals by the sea have this magical vibe that's hard to replicate elsewhere.
Speaking of the judging process, the system got a major upgrade. All the necessary information and materials were delivered promptly and without any hiccups, making the whole experience smooth and convenient. With over 20,000 entries last year, Mad Stars has certainly become a big fish in the global awards scene. Winning any type of award at Mad Stars amid such fierce competition is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the outstanding quality of the work. It's no small feat to stand out among the world's top-notch entries. A big shoutout to the folks in the jury support division – they made a difference and helped make the whole process even better.
MAD STARS are like ROCK STARS. It's hard not to love what they are doing.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
MAD STARS 2023 was filled with so many diverse experiences and warm memories!
What kind of juries will be joining MAD STARS this year?
We are looking forward to welcoming global experts who will evaluate various creative solutions with a fresh perspective at MAD STARS!
Don't miss out on the opportunity to evaluate outstanding entries from all over the world and make memories in the hot summer in the beautiful city of Busan by the sea!
Want to be a jury member for MAD STARS 2024?!

Verizon is one of the largest wireless service providers in the world and, as such, has a pretty strong grip on the mobile space. Indeed, it has had its share of exclusive phones over the years.
Why do carriers lock phones?
How To Unlock Reliance Cdma Phone Reviews
One of the main reasons that carriers lock phones down is to get customers to purchase device through them. In some cases you’ll find a particular model that’s exclusive to a network. In other words, you must buy the phone through that provider if you want to use it. Another reason for locking is to prevent fraud and mitigate theft.
READ:Where can I buy an unlocked phone?
The concept of exclusive phones was much bigger a few years back but it still happens from time to time with the top carriers. The Motorola Droid line is an example Verizon exclusivity. Nevertheless, you have the right to unlock your phone.
Why unlock a Verizon phone?
While Verizon phones operate on a CDMA it does offer dual CDMA/GSM devices, meaning international coverage is potentially an option. Unlocking a Verizon phone gives you freedom to take it to prepaid and MVNO brands like GreatCall, Net10, Staight Talk, Total Wireless, and Visible.
How To Unlock Reliance Cdma Phone Plans
Also worth noting, you should still be able to use an unlocked Verizon LTE phone on AT&T or T-Mobile — or their MVNO brands. More and more we’re finding their handsets to be compatible with both carriers’ LTE bands.
READ:Cheap phone plans that use Verizon’s network
Unlocking Verizon phones: Prerequisites
Verizon makes it very easy to unlock your phone. In fact, as of summer 2019 it automatically unlocks its customer’s devices after 60 days as long as certain criteria is met. There are a few things you should know need to do first. Before unlocking, ensure the following is in order.
You are 60 days after phone purchase
The phone must not be reported as stolen, lost, or associated with fraud
How to unlock your Verizon phone
How To Unlock Reliance Cdma Phone Price
Okay, so this one is pretty much a non-starter. As long as you adhere to the aforementioned details, you should have no problem with getting your device unlocked. But, if you have any issues, reach out to Verizon for help.
In the event you have a phone that was purchased prior to July 2019, it may already be unlocked. Simply put in a SIM card from a different carrier and you’ll know whether it is. If not, give Verizon a ring and you’ll be just fine.

A world view of creativity at MAD STARS: Meta’s Fabio Seidl, & Google’s Artwell Nwaila
Tumblr media
Fabio Seidl is director of global creative development at Meta. He has been based in the US for a decade but grew up and spent his early career in Brazil. Before joining mMeta four and a half years ago, Fabio had worked in major international agencies throughout his career – DDB Worldwide, VMLY&R, 360i and Leo Burnett in the US; Ogilvy, McCann and Africa in Brazil.
Artwell Nwaila is head of creative & ecosystem at Google Sub-Saharan Africa. Before joining Google, he worked as creative director at sport broadcast channel SuperSport in South Africa and was the founder and creative director of creative network, SA Creatives. He also worked in boutique agencies such as Offlimit Communications and Straight Twisted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These two creatives from different backgrounds came together at MAD STARS as members of the executive jury that chose the Grand Prix winners. They share their views on Grand Prix-winning creativity, making great creative work and Asian creativity in a whole world perspective.
Tumblr media
[Fabio Seidl]
“We discussed the Grand Prix of the Year for many hours,” Fabio recalls. “And we talked a lot about the message we wanted to leave to the industry. If it was ‘be experimental’ or ‘own your brand’s space’ or ‘show me something I’ve never seen or that I don’t know?’ The latter ended up being stronger. We wanted to make sure that the results showed that creativity, when it is unexpected, is even more powerful.”
Tumblr media
[Artwell Nwaila]
“A big focus for me whenever I judge is whether the campaign answers a real brand need or it aims to be creative for the sake of being creative,” Artwell adds. “The magic in the Grand Prix winners is that they are incredibly clever and creative ideas that actually answer a brand need.”
Artwell also believes that to nurture the kind of creative thinking that wins awards and rewards its clients during campaigns, individuals in creative fields should venture beyond their specialised domains. “By this, I mean that creativity thrives when it is fuelled by a diverse range of experiences. This can only be accomplished by creatives actively acquiring new skills. The greater the variety of skills they acquire, the more expansive their worldview becomes, enriching their creative perspectives,” he says.
Tumblr media
[Fabio Seidl]
“Collect experiences that are not obvious,” Fabio adds. “Travel, read, meet people, learn what other people don’t know. If you are a new creative but you’re learning from pragmatic formulas, you’re missing your most important asset - a new perspective.”
For any young creatives who think that advertising is an easy career, there is one word – sorry. It’s a tough industry and even tougher when times are hard socially and/or economically. The keys to success right now are also muddied by the rate of change in the world and therefore the industry that reflects it and feeds from it.
For Fabio, one key is mandatory, “Collaboration. And by that I don’t mean ‘everyone is a creative’ which can be inefficient. I mean, ‘bring to the table something only you could think or do’. The industry is tough now because there’s much more to learn every day. Much more information. The audience is fragmented and create their own stories and content. So, we need to partner with talent that can come up with what we would never think:  creators, makers, technologists, artists, producers.”
Tumblr media
[Artwell Nwaila]
Artwell adds a different kind of collaboration. “I believe that the industry should embrace collaboration with technology rather than viewing it as a competitor. Those who can discover ways to partner with technology are more likely to attain success. Secondly, while technology exerts significant influence across various aspects of our industry, it's crucial to remember that creativity remains paramount. It is we the creatives, not machines, who possess the ability to deliver on that front.”
Tumblr media
[Artwell Nwaila]
Artwell also gave a talk called Leveraging Data to Amplify Creativity in Advertising in which he described the power of data for success in a tough industry. “The main highlights focussed on the importance of moving away from assumption based creative development and move towards data driven creativity,” he says. “Consumers are bombarded by more than 5000 marketing messages a day and therefore it’s important to use strategies that make campaigns stand out and deliver return on investment. A point I wanted to land in the talk is that creatives don’t need to be data scientists. Accessing data can be as simple as using Google trends.
“Creatives need to be more curators than ever,” he adds.
Both creatives were impressed by the Asian work they saw at MAD STARS, especially work that was embedded in its local culture.
Tumblr media
[Fabio Seidl]
“MAD STARS’ highlight for me was to see the regional insights working to bring great ideas to life. It was wonderful to see the harmony between simplicity, ingenuity and craft that only Asia can build,” Fabio notes.
[Artwell Nwaila]
Artwell was also struck by the powerful way in which local insights were used. “Based on my observations at MAD STARS, it's evident that the Asian creative community is not just aligned with the global community but, in some instances, leading the way. What particularly impressed me was the emphasis on authentic localization, where creatives craft content tailored to specific regions and address their unique needs. This approach signifies the future of marketing, marking a departure from the era of one-size-fits-all campaigns.”

Chow Kok Keong, CCO Innocean Indonesia at MAD STARS: The Secret To Winning the International Awards
Tumblr media
Chow Kok Keong (KK), chief creative officer of Innocean Indonesia, has been ranked #1 creative in Indonesia for four consecutive years. He has won awards at all the major international awards and judged at most of them. He joined Innocean as CCO in July last year, leaving his role as regional ECD at Hakuhodo to do so.
Tumblr media
KK added his creative expertise to the final jury at MAD STARS this year, where he says, he “sought simplicity and freshness in both the idea and execution, as I believe the best communication should be simple and easy to engage with.”
For success in the industry, he adds, “Staying relevant is key. Consumer behaviour and media consumption habits constantly change, therefore, communication campaigns must be aligned with today's trends and insights.”
For creatives on their way up, he advises, “My expectation is simple. Come out of your comfort zone. Never settle for what you consider ‘good enough’. Always question whether the idea can be pushed further and whether it stands out from what competitors are doing in the market.”
Tumblr media
KK was thrilled to see Asian campaigns perform well against other big-player countries at MAD STARS this year and was proud to see those good enough to compete on the global stage.
Two stood out, in particular for him. Two that he wishes he had been part of. They are:
Unbranded Menu (Agency: Leo Burnett Group Manila / Advertisers: McDonald's)
Tumblr media
Unbranded Menu by Leo Burnett Group Manila for McDonald’s Philippines, which was one of the two Grands Prix of the Year at MAD STARS. Among its awards were 3 Golds - in Social & Influencer, Strategy and Media - and a Grand Prix in brand experience and activation.
youtube
2. Newspapers Inside The Newspaper (Agency: Impact BBDO / Advertisers: An Nahar newspaper)

Newspapers Inside The Newspaper by Impact BBDO for An Nahar newspaper, whose collection of 8 awards included 2 Golds - in Print and Media.

[MAD STARS through Female Eyes] Becky McOwen-Banks, Director, Creative X Global, Meta
Tumblr media
[MAD STARS through Female Eyes]
: Becky McOwen-Banks, Director, Creative X Global, Meta
It was the first MAD STARS event Becky McOwen-Banks, director, creative X global, Meta. She also brought their female perspective to the final juries.
Becky has been a creative director, on staff and freelance, at agencies such as M&C Saatchi London, VaynerMedia UK & EMEA, New Republique and FCB Inferno as well as an active member of the SheSays committee.
Becky McOwen-Banks certainly threw herself into MAD STARS. She was a member of the Final Jury and New Stars Jury, as well as a speaker discussing Searching for Innovation? Then Shut Up and Get Out of the Way! A.K.A. Creative Entrepreneurship in Action. Here is her MAD STARS view:
Tumblr media
What motivated you to be so involved? What was your impression of MAD STARS 2023?
Becky McOwen-Banks: I have been on many global awards juries, but none that ran from Asia. I was keen to join MAD STARS, see the approach, meet more amazing talent and see for myself how it has been growing as an awards to be noticed. The combination of creative showcase and marketing business focus provides a balanced view of the industry, so I was excited and honoured when invited to get involved. I believe in the power of learning and curiosity have driven me throughout my career. The opportunity to visit a city I hadn't travelled to before, spend some time with leaders and creative talent was too good to miss. It is so important that we in the West don't become myopically focussed inwards and forget that there is so much more to discover and uncover.
You were on the final jury. What stood out for you in the jury room (and did any work stand out for you in particular)? What were you looking for in the winners?
Becky McOwen-Banks: We had a great mix of talent and skills in the Final jury for my categories which meant lots of good discussion about the work. Identifying what is the right work for this specific awards show, at this time and within the specific category makes judging different every time. This year lots of conversations focussed around work that made a difference to the world (like Knock Knock) but also rewarded paying clients for pursuing brave thinking.
Tumblr media
A piece of work I loved and have shared since being home is the Ladies of Tang Dynasty for Daning Palace. I'm a typophile - I adore typography - so this was just delicious. The attention to the heart of the concept and then allowing their design minds to fly was brilliant.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You were also on the New Stars jury. What did you think of the standard of work and the New Stars themselves as well as the judging experience? What were you looking for in New Stars winners?
Becky McOwen-Banks: The NEW STARS jury was tough. There was a lot of great work and so little time. The awards facilitators were very strict with us to get through all of the entries with time for good conversation. It was really interesting seeing the variation in the approaches, and also seeing how some teams seemed to really get under the skin of the issue. The ideas that linked the heart and head were the standout winners, taking such a sensitive topic out of expected channels, to reach audiences wherever they may be - and all with empathy. You won't change behaviour on any topic by shouting at people and trying to shame them. The ideas required an understanding of the educational job that was needed in order to bring people with you and allow the message to be heard as well as the empathetic tone required.  The three points I had as advice for all teams was:
1: Really question your own thinking. Be your own biggest critic.  Would the audience REALLY respond how I am suggesting? Would it really work? What is the simple message they would actually take out and remember? If you’re not strict in your own thinking then CDs or awards juries will be and will dismiss your thinking.  Learn to stress test your own ideas. Try them from every angle and always be honest with how effective the idea may be in the actual world. It's only this way you get to water-tight thinking.
2: Keep pushing ideas.  Some ideas simply weren't evolved far enough, despite having a good insight and idea. Creatives (particularly at the early stages in their career) need to keep pushing to deliver full campaign thinking. It's also a way to test the validity of the idea itself. You can get two executions out of most ideas but then run dry - so push for 3, 4, 5 and show this idea can go anywhere.
3: Crafting should always be secondary to the idea - in service of the idea, not instead of it. Great design and entry boards can never hide an average idea. Some entries were beautifully crafted, when I'd advise for this time-limited exercise that they should have been focussed 90% on idea and 10% on the board.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Please tell me about your session. Why did you choose the topic and what were its main insights?
Becky McOwen-Banks: Searching for Innovation? Then Shut Up and Get Out of the Way comes from my MBA thesis subject. I am a creative leader committed to innovation and teams. My thesis enabled me to explore the effects that leaders have on their teams, not through their direct actions but through the team design and process they create - and subsequently if these different team designs then have a different impact on the ability to innovate. This felt like a topic that would bring together the MAD STARS audience of leaders and innovation. We are all after ways to learn and enable our teams and businesses to be better, so I thought this was a good way to share some of my findings. I've had a few enquiries for my presentation so I'm hoping that means it landed with some. The main insight is that the traits of leaders (or founders) do affect the shape of teams they create, and this does ultimately impact the ability to innovate. So, we all need to be more aware of the systems we are creating, that we are the ones inhibiting our own success. It also reveals that innovative leaders are those with interactive and interpersonal traits, and that these leaders create more fluid teams.
Or to distill that into some simple guidance from my results:  1: Leaders who identify themselves as interactive/interpersonal create more autonomous team shapes  2: A more autonomous team shape results in more identifiable and measurable innovation with the added benefit of team positivity and confidence.

1. Could you introduce yourself, please?
Tumblr media
: Hi, I’m Nikki Sunga, an art-based Creative Director at BBDO Guerrero.
2. Do you have any connections with MAD STARS?
Can you address your previous performances in MAD STARS?
Tumblr media
: In 2017, my partner Andi and I were the first creative team to represent the Philippines in MAD STARS New Stars Competition in Busan, Korea.
3. You were awarded from NEW STARS in 2017 and 4 years later, you became a NEW STARS Jury!
Can we talk about ‘What are the differences between NEW STARS participant’s perspective and NEW STARS Jury’s perspective’?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
: It’s amazing to even just think about how in a matter of four years, an art director competitor would be a jury member. In 2017, when I was just a NEW STARS participant, my mindset was about absorbing all that I could from the experience—from meeting many young minds all over the world to learning from our mentors. Winning then was just a bonus and the greater prize was being in Busan with all of MAD STARS.
In 2021 when I became a jury member, I was focused on mentoring and making sure I was able to give back to the participants all that I was able to absorb four years prior. As a jury member, I was able to give advice to some of the participants on how to ideate or even how to compete and still have fun in NEW STARS. Giving back my knowledge & experience were my goals in 2021 as a jury member.
4. You have experienced both on & offline NEW STARS competitions. Would you address the pros & cons for both online and offline NEW STARS competitions? Also, which of the two methods seems to lead to more creativity among the participants?
Tumblr media
: Honestly, nothing beats being on ground in Busan with your fellow competitors/participants. Offline NEW STARS in Korea has an exciting energy! When you’re competing or judging in BEXCO, you’ll be able to mingle and meet with many advertisers and creatives from different parts of the world. The offline experience allows you to freely talk to anyone and you’ll also gain more insights from them. It makes the entire competition experience more holistic and also fulfilling at the same time.
During the pandemic, when NEW STARS was held online, it reached a wider audience given that everyone relied on the internet. There were so many entries for the competition and that was its biggest value for me. Even it if it was only virtual, you could clearly see the thirst for competition for young creatives all over the world. The difficulty I experienced during the online competition was that of transparency or being able to easily communicate with the participants.
5. I remember the last interview with you in 2021 talking about your achievements. You have mentioned that from a young creator and now a mentor in the creative team, making opportunities to train the next generation was your great achievement. Do you have any new proud achievements recently?
: Mentoring young creatives has and always will be something I constantly work hard for and I actively do this by involving myself in intern programs, jurying for young competitions, and also joining creative workshops.

But when it comes to the work that we’ve created, I’m extremely proud of our environmental design initiatives for our agency and clients at BBDO Guerrero.
Recently, we’ve earned PR recognition and won a few metals for “Mountain Dew’s Re-Dew Scrapboards”. This design initiative focuses on using Mountain Dew soda bottles as PET-resin by combining it with Typhoon Rai wreckage to create unique surfboards. We aim to raise funds for the typhoon-hit island of Siargao where surfing and tourism are important. My team and I are completely hands-on from creating the actual surfboards to hosting its exhibits. You may find out more about Re-Dew Scrapboards here: www.redew.ph
6. What new challenge or interest do you have these days?
: Recently, my days have been filled with learning and coping with AI. As an art director, AI has become a fun tool to experiment with. It provides a good baseline for ideas and execution. I believe in learning WITH AI rather than being afraid of it.
7. Where can you usually get inspiration to come up with creative ideas?
: Inspiration for creative ideation comes from daily life experiences and observations. When I brainstorm, I like to sit in a café by myself and watch people around me.
I like to think and do “Tiktok Searches” when I ideate. It’s also important to be updated with the latest trends for our current markets so spending time on multiple social networking sites 2-3 hours a day is necessary for me.
8. What Are Your Career Goals?
: As a 32-year-old Creative Director, my current goal is to STAY YOUNG and to keep my fire for competition burning. These two goals have propelled my career to where it is today and these encourage me to be a better creative.
9. Would you like to give any advice or tips for NEW STARS participants?
Tumblr media
: HAVE FUN. Winning the competition is important but being a NEW STARS participant who is present in Busan is a great opportunity for young creatives like you. Allow yourself to be a SPONGE- absorb insights, meet people, create connections, and make life-long friends in advertising! NEW STARS has paved so many doors in my life and I hope it does the same for you.
