How To Make Full Use of Networking Events
Networking events and conferences are great because you get to meet and learn from experts but also connect with peers. I recently attended one and I wanted to share things I wish I had done before and what I learned.
1. Define an Objective
You have to determine why exactly you want to go to the event. Are you looking for a career change? A job? Advice on how to be better at your current job? How to tackle some issues in your start up? Networking? Make a list of the reasons.
2. Research
You need to research the speakers extensively. Go over their Wikipedias, LinkedIns and other social medias. Read their company websites from top to bottom. If they’ve released a book, take a look at the summary and read the reviews. Read some of their published articles.
Take this time to prepare at least 3 questions per speaker. Try to make at unique and interesting as possible, don’t ask the usual generic ones.
3. Business Cards
Definitely carry business cards. Make sure that your email, LinkedIn is mentioned clearly. Even if you work at a different company, that doesn’t matter- show your job title on the business card. Better yet, ask your HR if they can give you business cards as you would be promoting their company through your event. If you’re a student, I’d recommend you make a portfolio website of your internships/ project/ past work/ volunteer work/ hobbies/ interests.
4. Actually Talking
During the event, don’t be shy to ask questions. It doesn’t matter whether the rest of the audience thinks they’re stupid. You have spent your money to come there for your gain. Make full use of it. Ask questions. Meet the speaker after the event. Thank them for the insight, introduce yourself, ask them questions related to your objective of coming to the conference. Exchange business cards.
5. Utilising Coffee Breaks
Coffee and lunch breaks are a great way to talk to people. You may feel shy or awkward to talk to new people, but there’s very high chances that they feel the same way. You can start off by asking someone how they heard about the event, what they thought of the speaker, or pass a remark on the question they asked the speaker. Keep in mind that if the event has multiple speakers, there could be a chance that you’re talking to a speaker, even if you don’t recognise them… so be on your best behaviour.
6. Questions
Ask questions that are beneficial to you. During my conference, we had a women-leaders panel. An audience member asked the speakers how they divided their work between family and work. The speakers looked visibly annoyed at the question - because how generic is that?
Ask questions that could help you grow. If you’re in marketing, ask about their tried and tested marketing strategies. If you’re an early stage founder, ask them how they sourced their VC. If you’re struggling with time management, ask the speakers how they manage. Ask the questions for YOUR own benefit.
You can ask difficult questions but make sure you do it respectfully and tactfully. Best to start with a compliment and then ease into the question.
7. Dressing
Business casual, unless mentioned otherwise. What this means: blazer/ jackets/ trousers/ pencil skirts/ shirt/ co-ord sets/ no sneakers.
It doesn’t matter what other people wear. The way you present yourself is your brand. It also shows the respect you have for the other person - you respect them enough to not come shabbily dressed.

I’ve submitted five abstracts for four conferences this fall! I’m currently waiting to hear back about three, one was accepted as a poster, and I get to present the fifth! Very excited to be back at meetings while still taking rigorous Covid precautions, thanks to the cyborg PPE y’all helped me crowdfund this spring.

Hello! Do you or your followers have any tips for attending an academic conference with chronic pain and mobility disability?
ooh okay this definitely isn’t universal bc the only conference i went to in person was fall 2019 & a huge biomedical engineering one, so both scale & the particular flavors of ableism may differ for you not to mention yk. covid. but here are my takeaways:
if you don’t have a motorized mobility aid you may want to rent one - i rented a mobility scooter for part of the time & immediately called to extend the rental for the full duration after getting there because the conference center was fucking massive. i definitely could not have physically walked it. so see if you can check the size ahead of time & plan accordingly - it sucks that disabled people have to put in so much effort but if it’s at a conference center calling the staff might help. if it’s at a university their access & accommodations office might have a relevant campus map
i stayed at the adjoining hotel also for access reasons (getting a mobility scooter into an uber is not my idea of a fun time) which was way more expensive than my colleagues who could share an air bnb. check with your department to see if they have conference funding! your university’s access & accommodations and/or financial aid offices also might have recommendations for funding options
if you’re doing a poster presentation & will be seated, a laser pointer might be helpful if you won’t be able to point at the top of the poster with your hand! someone also recommended i make little printed flyers with summaries, the main graphics, etc so i could talk to people directly more easily since i couldn’t present the “standard” way - your department should also be able to print that sort of thing for you if you’re interested
if the conference is at a university, check social media to see what disabled students are saying about access issues to anticipate etc
it’s gonna be ableist. again this is coming from my experience in BME which is super cure-oriented so it might not be universal, but however ableist you expect it to be, double that. i had at least two breakdowns over the 4 days about how hard it was to navigate the environment, how isolating it was, feeling like i wouldn’t be able to have a career in academia, etc. if at all possible, have a support system “on call” for you during this time - if you’re 18 or older & want to join my bitter cripple discord, feel free to dm me! i’d also think about learning about any disabled people in your field. & if you want some commiseration, i have several poems about my conference experience in my chapbook mountaintop (available free)
invest in a P100 respirator if you haven’t already! i have one of the kinda cyberpunk looking ones but people can be weird about it (moreso than they already are for masks they recognize), my gf uses the Flo Mask which is less obtrusive & really likes it
i hope that’s helpful! other folks feel free to add on, & please dm me or send another ask if you have more questions! i will leave you with two blessings, one from my first disability studies professor & the other from a longtime friend:
run people over.
take up space. take up more.

so as much as I gripe about prepping for academic conferences, I'm so hyped for this one purely because the title of my paper includes the phrase "the hardboiled homosexual"

You wouldn't think there'd be a lineup outside the Vendor Hall half an hour before it opens...but this is The Best Conference for forensics swag. Crime scene stuff and bony things and blacklight everything...
Had a lovely chat over breakfast with the mentor I was set up with, an investigator at the local ME's office. Funnily enough, while we have different forensic interests, we bonded over writing! She's an ex-cop turned death investigator who writes short fiction and romance, and gives talks to crime-fiction author groups. Sweet!
The keynote talk was riveting, challenging for some, and resulted in a massive standing ovation. More on that later when I had time to process.
I'm skiving off the long boring business meetings this afternoon, though, and going to explore the local library and Science Museum. Tomorrow is a full day of Science Sessions that will have me parked in my seat, so I will need snacks. Luckily part of our swag bag was a large 20 oz water bottle!

1. Sign up for existing organisations and charities in your city.
2. Look up online constantly for events happening near me. My country has a very popular events app that we use to go for all sorts of events (entertainment, music, conferences) so finding these out are quite easy.
3. Newsletters. Newsletters of the local art museums; banks; charitable institutes; B School events…. The list goes on.
4. Starting an initiative. If you can’t find one around you, create one. Get a couple of your friends to help out and create something beautiful!

It’s actually interesting (read: incredibly frustrating) to me that for an industry that markets itself as highly scientific, the American zoo industry has basically abandoned Covid precautions at meetings.
Felid TAG had no vaccine or mask mandate, except when touring felid and mustelid areas on zoo day. No additional ventilation, no online option.
Elephant manager’s association has a vaccine mandate (which was made public after a bit, at first you only found out after you registered) but no masks, additional ventilation, or online option.
AZA annual has a vaccine requirement but no masking, no word about ventilation, and a “virtual” option that’s $250 for a really measly selection of virtually-streamed sessions. Midyear was the same, minus virtual access.
ZAA annual hasn’t said anything about Covid precautions, but they had none for in-person in 2021 and I would assume it’s the same this year.
In contrast, the sanctuary and animal advocacy meetings I’ve looked into so far this year (Big Cat Sanctuary Alliance, Captive Wildlife Conference, Animal Law) all have strict mask requirements - KN94+ - and most of them have vaccine requirements and/or virtual options. At least one animal rights conference isn’t happening for 2022 because they can’t guarantee it’ll be safe.
Given that the zoo industry frequently importunes these other groups as being “less scientific” about their approach to animal advocacy, there’s quite a contrast in their approaches to Covid safety precautions.

(24-26/100 days of productivity)
Came to my first conference! This time I didn’t present anything (that will be for the next one 🙃), so it wasn’t stressful and I could just take everything in!
It was thankfully in the same city I live in, so it was pretty convenient!
Learned a lot of new stuff and it was very interesting, although super tiring!

For anyone interested in my Horatio and Juliet parallels paper I have good news! I am presenting it at the Outside/rs Conference in collaboration with the University of Sussex. I will be presenting on Saturday 10th of June, time TBD.
From my understanding the conference will be online (and in-person) and you can buy day tickets, full attendance tickets, or you can reach out for volunteer/community comped tickets for more accessibility for queer folks. Definitely check out the conference I am very excited to present there!
For anyone that wants the presentation and doesn’t want to/can’t attend that’s fine! I will be producing accessible content in the coming months, after I find out if it’s getting published or not.
