I honestly can't stand the relationship love square in X-Men '97 to be honest. So, if I have this right, Jean gets mad at Scott for cheating with Madelyne but literally not even a scene prior she was cheating on him with Logan? So why on earth are you mad??? You're both cheaters and clearly don't like or respect one another given all you can do is argue and think about how much you love other people? So just? Break up???

Am I missing something? Why would you stay together if you clearly are not happy????

REDESIGNING MAGIK

Welcome to Limbo! Our group chose Illyana Rasputina, the marvelous Magik for this round! Introduced as the younger sister of Colossus, Magik joined the 80s New Mutants team as a young teen and has since flourished into an A-Lister in her own right. She's been a member of the Phoenix Five, Cyclops' renegade X-Men squad, the Krakoan New Mutants, and the 2022 X-Men team.

She has several inspiration points for artists and redesigners to pull from. She's most well-known for her all-black 2012 look but has also sported demonic and fantasy influences as someone connected to the hellish Limbo and her malevolent alter ego, the Darkchylde.

Version 1 "The Savage Magik". Having been stripped of her magical knowledge, Illyana Rasputin hunts down various enchanted artifacts to replace what she's lost. Becoming desperate she seems to be willing to steal and sometimes kill to get these talismans. Among these are the Soul Dagger of Pixie, the medallion of Daimon Hellstrom, Holy bands from "Heven" and a cursed skull from an alternate version of Lockheed.

Version 2 "Mistress Magik" This is an older more seductive Magik that's been corrupted by the influence of Selene and embraced her sensuality, opening up a whole new avenue of mystical arts that she hadn't dared explore before. She now uses her SoulSword to capture the essences of her foes and much like Selene feeds on them keeping her young and vital.

Version 3 "Magik, Queen of Hell" Many questioned the logic of Magik giving Limbo to Madelyne Prior but the end game has been revealed. Illyana allowed Madelyne to tether her magic to Limbo, knowing eventually "Maddie" would get greedy and begin bringing more power to that dimension. With a carefully hidden clause in the Limbo transference spell Magik takes back Limbo and all the power within it and successfully overthrows all the Hell Lords, unifying the many dreaded dimensions under one fearsome rule, hers.

"Almost as soon as Magik was decided on for this design challenges I had two ideas strike me simultaneously ... The first of those ideas was the image of Illyana as a 90's Riot(ish) on the cover of a Magazine. I wanted to give her an edgy grungy vibe but still pay homage to her Demonic nature.

Shortly after Finishing my first Design I just knew I had to make my second idea come to life.

What if Illyana was an Anime Mech Pilot and Wore a Plugsuit... thats it... thats the idea. I really wanted to strike the Balance between Anime Plugsuit but still being noticeably Magik and X-men.

I kept the Bright yellow Color scheme with hints of black and red and chose to interpret her Armored arm into a Mechanized oversize cybernetic arm that helps fuel her Plasma Powered Soul sword that springs forth from her Gauntlet."

Random headcanons on the Weston boys

Okay since Weston anime is out, I’ll be sharing some headcanons I’ve collected during 10+ years of being obsessed with this saga and its characters.

I’ve been so invested into these headcanons that I consider them to be canon at this point. Anyway please don’t be mad if they don’t match your personal headcanon, it’s still my own interpretation and silly ideas about characters that don’t belong to me so anyone can disagree.

First I’m gonna write down the ones that involve more than one character, then I’ll be more specific and list them by character.

Brace yourselves for a pile of totally self-indulging blabbering.

Lawrence and Edgar are canonically childhood friends (Yana confirmed it), I like to think they grew up together thanks to their mothers being best friends with each other.

While Lawrence and Edgar already knew each other since birth, they met Herman and Gregory during their first year at Weston.

Because of the rivalry, friendship between students from different dorms has always been rather frowned upon, so the boys decided to put all their efforts in becoming the best students of their respective dorm to one day become Prefects and be free to meet and be friends without being judged by other students.

To freely chat and keep in contact prior to becoming P4, they secretly exchanged letters hidden among the library’s textbooks.

While we know Lawrence has 7 sisters, Edgar and Herman don’t have any sibling, while Gregory has an older brother. He’s doesn’t talk about him often as they’re not very close and don’t get along well.

Gregory met Cheslock while he was at his 3rd year (Cheslock is one year younger). They often spent their free time in their dorm’s common room, Cheslock would practice violin and Gregory would silently sit near him while drawing. One day he made a portrait of Cheslock and left it near him as a gift with the encouraging inscription “Keep playing”. The next day Cheslock asked him if he had any request for him on what to play, and that’s how they started talking to each other.

Headcanons by single character

Edgar:

His zodiacal sign is sagittarius

He has a sweet tooth and would live on sweet food alone

His maternal grandmother is french

His noble title comes from his mother, who is a Viscountess and older sister to Viscount of Druitt

He’s either pan or gay

Lawrence:

His zodiacal sign is capricorn

He’s ambidextrous (he usually writes with his right hand but is more comfortable doing other activities with his left one)

His sisters’ names are: Isabel (6 years older than him), Deborah (4 years older than him), Madelyn (2 years older than him), Adela (the only one to have a canonical name, 5 years younger than him), Rebecca (the one who has a crush on Edgar, 7 years younger than him), Rosalind and Amelia (identical twins, 9 years younger than him)

His father is a banker

Pretty sure he’s either ace or gay

Herman:

His zodiacal sign is libra (though I feel like aries might suit him better)

He took after his mother the most

He’s notoriously good at many sports, but he’s not very good at dancing (he’s not graceful enough for that kind of activity)

He’s good at cooking

He’s either a straight ally or a disaster bi

Gregory:

His zodiacal sign is cancer (mayhap also aquarius could suit him tho)

He used to wear charcoal and inks as make-up in his early years at Weston

His father is a politician

He’s kind of a picky eater and doesn’t like meat and seafood

He’s 100000% ace-spec

Cheslock:

His zodiacal sign is scorpio

His iconic “scar” is actually make-up, though beneath it he does have a smaller scar on his left eyelid, which is the result of a quarrel with his sister when they were kids

His father is a surgeon

His full name is Victor Theodore, which he hates

Pretty sure he’s bi

I might add more in the future, though I don’t have many headcanons for other characters but who knows.

Maybe I never picked up on it well but were Maeve and Homelander in like a real real relationship? Like was Maeve ever actually into him? She's part of his shrine and he wanted to have kids with her but I feel lost on her side of things lol

in the s3 finale, Maeve said to Homelander in no uncertain terms "From the start, I hated you." interestingly though, she follows that up with, "But what's more, I fucking pitied you." and i always wonder how much Maeve really knew about Homelander. whether she knew about the lab, the bad room, Madelyn, Vogelbaum...

it could be that their relationship was always some kind of publicity move. it might have even been baked into Maeve's contract that she was coming on to play a character, and that character is dating The Homelander. it's entirely possible she wouldn't realize what all that really entailed until it was too late. she started off as a naive and optimistic girl from the south, just like Starlight.

aside from that we really don't get a lot of detail on their relationship. Homelander claims she only started to "pull away" from him 6 years prior to the start of the show, but we also have no idea when Maeve joind the Seven. Homelander tells her that she's the one he's known the longest, but that also conflicts with a lot of other information we have. according to canon, it should be Noir he's known the longest.

as for Homelander, he's never been good at making a distinction between fiction and reality. even if she did start off as his "pretend" girlfriend, his entire life has been a performance. of course he would take it to heart and want to make that fantasy real.

we see the same thing happen when he traps Starlight in a fake dating plot. he has a moment of vulnerability and takes her hand to tell her, "I'm really glad you're here," as if she really is his girlfriend.

realistically, it probably went exactly like this with a young Maeve. she disliked him off the bat, but she played her part. she gained her fame and her success all while Homelander chewed away more and more of her. eventually she grew into an accessory to his violence and cruelty, and with that she became deeply cynical and miserable. she resented him, but she was also deeply afraid of him. we know that Homelander has done horrible things to stake his claim over her, and it wouldn't surprise me if she was afraid he would do worse to her family. maybe with the breakup, she just finally reached a point she felt she had nothing left that he could take from her.

Homelander loved Maeve in the only way he knew how to: he possessed her. even after she broke up with him, he still thought of her as his. so really, it depends who you ask. It was real to Homelander, and it was a living nightmare for Maeve.

Just watched the first few episodes of X-Men ‘97

I’ve always preferred the X-Men or Fantastic 4 over the Avengers in the comics and this show is the BEST!

SPOILERS

Things I love about it:

It finally made Cyclops cool, his landing has already been everywhere because it’s BADASS

Love the design of Morph love them and how they’ll just turn into a character.

Managed to do the whole Mister Sinister/Jean Grey cloning into Madelyn Prior so well and her green eyes are the icing on the cake

Finally Wolverine is Canadian

BUT THE BEST PART IS MAGNETO HE ATE

He’s the best part of the show so far but I love it ALL

Episode 5, Season 1 | X-men 97 spoilers/theory below cut

(If I knew how to make gifs/good quality scs I could analyze the different openings so far (up to episode 5) of X-Men 97 and backup my meta with images)

Disclaimer: I have many thoughts on what's going to happen forward this is basically a word vomit.

So a summarized version of my theory is: obviously time travel will happen. They didn't keep the original opening for nostalgia only. That's why The Brotherhood + Magneto keep going against the X-Men in the opening, even if they're on the same side since the beginning of the season.

That's why Xavier and Bishop keep showing up in the opening too? I don't know if they'll bring Xavier back but eh ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

Plus, Cable came back trying to prevent the massacre from happening, failed at it, and now Madelyn is confirmed to be dead. I don't think Cable will just let his mother stay dead.

So yeah. Madelyn, Gambit, Callisto, etc are dead. For now. Plus you know how it happens. Nobody stays dead in that damned universe, especially if you're a popular character

This might cheapen the blow episode 5 was, yes. But I don't think it will if they play their cards (heh) right

NOW! It still would be interesting as hell for them to be permanently dead.

Especially since Bishop comments that Gambit is not remembered in the future. I'm not totally convinced Magneto is dead even after the "omega-leve threat eliminated". I didn't see a corpse 🤨

Gambit had a hero death tbh too cool to undo like that

I also, somehow, think the Genosha genocide will stick as a whole to force mutants as whole to fight against humanity. Maybe this can even radicalize Scott

So maybe Gambit, as the popular character he is who is destined to marry Rogue, will return as a horseman for Apocalypse. Callisto and others will stay dead because they're not nearly important. Madelyne is fridged so Scott stays with Jean.

Oh we can even have that plot line where Sinister convinced Rogue to help him out with waking up Apocalypse, yeah? Nice too. Rogue, blinded by grief, going anti-hero for a sec.

Or maybe Sinister himself will bring Gambit back simply because he wants his otp to stay together, just like he did with Madelyne and Scott lmao

on Madelyn’s Pryor , is there some Xmen beat that I missed of like an aunt’s name or maternal last name etc why “Jean” would pick it? Pretty funny but iconic that she’d immediatley come up with a completely full name to be called … maybe it makes more “sense” in the comics? Not that k really care, I think it’s fun if she came up with it like that

In the show? None at all. But the showrunners know the fans know who this character is, so it's kind of a waste of time and effort to come up with a complicated workaround to explain something that the people who care about the name aren't really going to be impressed with no matter what you come up with.

In the comics? It comes down to the complicated backstory that Claremont gradually developed. Originally, Claremont did not intend for Madelyne to have any connection to Jean Grey other than a physical resemblance, and the whole plot of From the Ashes is Mastermind using his illusions into tricking people into thinking there was one. But the original concept of Madelyne was that she was her own person, with a concidentially-mysterious past, who was there as a way to give Scott Summers a happy ending as he was written out of the X-books. (The character's actual name was a reference to Maddie Prior, the lead vocalist of Steeleye Span, Chris Claremont's two favorite bands.)

Then the decision was made by Jim Shooter, Bob Layton, and Kurt Busiek to launch X-Factor with the O5 X-Men, and in the process retcon Jean Grey's death (doubly ironic since it had been Jim Shooter's editorial mandate that had caused that death in the first place). Chris Claremont has always hated the idea, so please stop asking him about it at cons, and fought it with everything he had, but at the end of the day as a work-for-hire writer he had no choice. So instead he comes up with the idea of Madelyne as a clone created by Mister Sinister as a way to unite the Summers and Grey bloodlines following the death of Jean Grey, and the rest is Inferno.

Homelander tried his best to force the words out. Just how fucking humiliated would he have to feel in this moment?

He and Ben have been intimate before– well, they’d only just started, but still. In fact, the first time they had sex, he’d been so caught up in the moment that he somehow forgot how insecure he could feel. He fucking hated it more than anything. Hell, even before then, there was a time when Ben saw beneath that suit. They never talked about it, but it hurt his pride back then, too.

No partner before Benjamin ever wanted to see him bare. Nobody. Madelyn stripped him down once, but she was quick to remark on how average he was. He never took the top of his suit off again.

Maeve never asked him to. Their trysts were more for release and were, frankly, the realest part of their relationship. If nothing else, at least that was legitimate.

There were a few fans in the past, but… he learned to never do that again.

But Benjamin? Here he was, knelt before him in just his underwear, with a worried look on his face at the sudden recoil.

“Are you okay?”

He’s never really been asked that before, either. It’s strange, the way his heart beats like a hummingbird’s wings. Is he okay?

He doesn’t really know.

Homelander hates himself for this, for ruining the moment. It was fine before, why couldn’t it be fucking fine now?

He shuts his eyes to escape. He doesn’t know what to do with the look of true, genuine care in Ben’s gaze. He doesn’t know how to react to the way the hands prying at his suit immediately ceased and moved to hold his fingers. Just enough touch to give him room to breathe– to give him a choice– but still show support and concern.

Once upon a time, he would beg for space in the lab only to have more hands grab at him and nudge him into obedience.

Benjamin’s hands let him decide.

“Johnny?”

He nods his head quickly. I’m alright, he wants to say.

It doesn’t come out.

“Talk to me, pumpkin.” Ben murmurs, thumbs stroking the backs of his knuckles. “We don’t have to do this if you don’t want to. You’re allowed to say no, y’know.”

But how does he tell him? How does he open his mouth and admit that he hates his own body and he’s been given plenty of reason to believe others will too? How does he tell the man who worshiped him so reverently just one day prior that he’s worried the adoration will rot into disgust? Into disappointment…

He considers the state of himself now and how ridiculous he must look. Bare below the waist, save for his half tented briefs, and fully clothed up top. Must be a treat to see him look so fucking stupid. Could only get worse if that top half came off, too. God, even his legs were lackluster compared to the suit. How could Ben look at him, perceive muscle– perceive perfection, and then enjoy what’s beneath? No, no, he should put it back on. All of it. Just shimmy his pants down enough to do the job and call that it, just like he used to do with the others.

He feels a blanket cover his lower body and tears bite at his eyes. The sound of the bug throwing on a shirt makes it worse. He ruined the moment, didn’t he?

“You can open your eyes,” Ben coos. “It’s okay.”

When he does, he expects to find laughter and disappointment– but it’s softness and understanding that greet him.

Ben moves to lay beside him, lifting an arm to offer a place of refuge.

He takes it without question.

It’s never been like this before. Even the last time was… startlingly different. There’s something more here, something strange. He wasn’t told to go home last night. Ben didn’t roll out of bed and throw his suit at him when everything was said and done. It didn’t feel so goddamn empty.

And it doesn’t feel that way now.

Last night, he was the one who did the holding. Homelander let Ben snuggle up beside him and fall asleep right on his chest. Tonight, he is the one who gets to be held.

He thumbs at the hem of Ben’s shirt. Fingers run through his hair and he huffs a weak sigh. His pulse calms and that all-consuming anxiousness is fading.

Ben turns on a movie for him.

He lets his head rest on the web-head’s chest. The gentle thrums within captivate him far more than fucking Taxi Driver could ever hope to accomplish. Baffling that, aside from waning arousal, there’s nothing.

There’s no stress, no muscle tension, no grinding teeth– nothing. There’s fucking nothing to even insinuate disappointment or agitation. All he hears is a yawn. Feels Ben's legs tangle with his beneath the blankets.

He’s probably not going to fall asleep tonight. Nerves aside, he can’t sleep in the suit– never could.

A warm palm lands on the nape of his neck and the slightest change in Ben’s breathing lets him know.

He still wants to ask about it.

By all means, Homelander knows he should just fess up. Admit to his stupid fucking insecurity and let the humiliation wash over him until the tides of shame quelled. Ben’s already seen him; it shouldn’t be so fucking hard to just…

To just fucking do it.

He’s a god. A literal, living, breathing god. Why is he so incapable?

“Y'know,” Ben begins. “Back before I got top surgery, I used to wear a binder like constantly. You couldn't get me out of it.”

He's almost scared of where this conversation may lead. Was Ben going to call him selfish? He wouldn't be the first… Different reasons all across the board, but it's nothing he hasn't heard before. Though, this time, it might actually hurt…

“I fuckin’ hated taking it off almost as much as I hated having to wear it. I'd get so used to seeing myself flat chested and normal that it'd freak me out when I had to. And, god, it was like ten times worse when it was off in front of other people… Like, it made it real.”

The hand at Homelander’s nape trailed up into the length of his undercut, occasionally trailing down to play in the short, velvety sides.

He was never quite sure if he loved or hated the way Ben could call him on things by relating it back to himself. A subtle yet very loud way of saying I see you. I see you within myself.

“The illusion of everything I wanted to be– it just… It hurts more when you gotta show people the truth. You gotta hope they won't twist the knife a little deeper. Just takes one person to ruin everything, y'know?”

Homelander shuts his eyes to fight the sting of tears. Ben understands.

“Tell me to shut up if you want, but that one night…”

The night he killed Madelyn. The night Ben stripped the stink of charred flesh from him and dressed him in his own clothes.

“You reacted pretty much the same way I did the first time I let someone else see my chest. It's not easy…”

Really? Was he going to talk about his sexcapades in a time like this? What–

“I wanted to keep it on so bad, but they insisted. They never gave me a reason to–” He paused. “It was only nice for them.”

He can hear the touch of sorrow in every word.

“They… She liked it in a way that made her feel good, but not me. Didn't matter if I cringed or told her I didn't want to take it off. I'd say no chest stuff, and ten minutes into a movie she'd stuff her hand up my shirt and–” Ben huffs a heavy breath. He's past the point of tears on things like this, but there was still anger– still disgust. “Anyway, I just… I don't ever want you to feel forced to take your stuff off if you don't want to. I think you're wonderful. But you might not always feel that way and that's okay.”

It's moments like these that remind him he has nothing to fear with this sweet boy. That even the tears staining Ben's shirt will go unpunished. They'll be wiped away and kissed dry every time.

“I think you're beautiful, but you don't owe me the visuals if you don't want to. I'm happy as long as you're around.”

He's not sure what force overtakes him, but Homelander lifts himself just enough to press the most pathetic kiss he's ever given to Ben's lips. It's salty from his tears and his lip quivers through the act, but the way Ben reciprocates keeps the shame at bay.

His emotions are torrential at best. He wants to kill whoever hurt his little spider. Flay them alive and fucking present the good work, but then…

He felt like fucking mush. A big pile of melty fucking mush that needed to stay put with the one person who wouldn't let him spill and fall apart. He's certain he looks ridiculous, all teary-eyed and pathetic.

But he's also certain the warm eyes looking up at him don't mind one bit.

When all is said and done– when the credits roll and the movie is over– he decides to be a little brave.

“Can I…” he begins, drawing his sleepy little spider back to reality. “D'you have a shirt I could borrow?”

With a kiss to his temple, Ben uses a web to retrieve the one hanging off the back of the desk chair. He lets Homelander agree to the texture first, and then something happens.

He asks without fear.

He asks without anxiety.

“Can you help me out of this?”
