Unfounded fear is a good trope but a difficult one to find examples of. I always end up thinking of the moment after a whumpee wakes up from a nightmare or when they have just rescued after captivity.

Why I Love “Our Mojo” (5x07)

Besides the noir episode, I have seen many raise complaints about this episode (as a whole, because yes of course we all loved that morning after scene) and I thought I would give some reasons why I love this episode and how it’s so important to the development of our favorite couple. The criticism mostly brings up the very true fact that Deckerstar cannot seem to catch a break. Honestly, I get it... I would also love to have one episode where the drama happens around them, not to them. But I believe it’s important to address the steep learning curve that comes with being in a celestial relationship (for Chloe) and being in an emotional relationship (for Lucifer). Keep reading below (points are listed for your viewing pleasure) and let me know your thoughts!

1. We get to see Chloe’s goofy self!- God, I loved how much Chloe was glowing. She’s finally in a relationship with the man she loves and it warms me up to see her so happy after spending so much of the series (post-Candy) emotionally closed off. She’s openly laughing at Lucifer’s dumb jokes, she’s playful and welcomes Lucifer’s innuendos, and she’s just so damn proud to be the girlfriend of the Devil and it shows. This is a side of Chloe I hope to see persist through the season, because it was simply lovely to see!

2. Lucifer learns what it means to have a partner who can share his emotional burden- When Chloe tells him she’s concerned that he wasn’t open to sharing emotionally, it shows just how natural it is for Lucifer to close off and handle his emotional issues alone. Yes, he has therapy with Linda, but her role has been to mostly remain objective and help Lucifer reach his own conclusions or breakthroughs. But now Lucifer has Chloe by his side as he navigates his issues and, for him, having someone who irrevocably has his back is a foreign concept. This is new territory for Lucifer and while he can’t quite seem to firmly grasp what it means, he’s warming up to it all; after all, him allowing himself to be mojo’ed by Chloe means he does want to open up to her. And let’s not forget he brought Chloe to therapy! He really wants to do right by Chloe and sharing that aspect of his life to her is a huge step in the right direction. 

Now, heading into the second half of season 5, I have no doubt that opening up to Chloe will help him alleviate the huge emotional burden that comes with facing the one person who is the root of all his issues. One of my biggest hopes for part b is for Lucifer to be able to confide in Chloe, not shut her out, during this big moment of his life.

3. Chloe learns what it means to be “in the know” of the celestial shenanigans that, until recently, have happened behind her back- Chloe herself admits mid-episode she is so used to letting all the “crazy” things Lucifer would say fly over her head, that it took her a moment to realize the severity of the issue (it also didn’t help that she was distracted by thinking she had mojo...I mean this is the same girl who wants laser beam hands!). After Linda’s therapy session, she realizes the depth of Lucifer’s “other worldly” issues and that there is more to it than meets the eye. There is so much that Chloe does not know when it comes to celestial matters but what is important is that she is willing to learn and understand; Lucifer and Chloe’s conversation on the balcony is proof that she has clearly put some thought into what the mojo “swap” may mean. 

Throughout this episode, Chloe grasps what it means to be in a celestial relationship; it means patience, understanding, and thinking outside the box. Celestial shenanigans are bound to be as intense as ever with God making an appearance and while no one can possibly be ready for literal God, Chloe has the brief experience with the celestial side of things to help herself and Lucifer navigate this phase of their relationship.

4. The emphasis on empowerment and teamwork and how Lucifer and Chloe elevate each other - Empowerment and teamwork were very much the themes of this episode. We’ve seen some examples of empowerment in how Lucifer encouraged Chloe to use “our mojo” on their suspect and Chloe being proud of her “swiss army knife”, but what I love was Chloe’s emphasis to “being a team” and “figuring it all out together”. Their true empowerment lies in them being a team, partners at work and in life. For example, self actualization is a fairly new concept and even Lucifer, Amenadiel, and Linda have barely scratched the surface to what it all means. However, Chloe doesn’t allow the unknown deter her; she faces it head on, motivated in helping Lucifer figure out his mojo loss. She looks hopeful, rather than dejected, during the final balcony scene and I do think it is because of the empowerment and confidence she feels from being with Lucifer and seeing him begin to open up to her.

Another example is a small gesture that may have gone unnoticed. It is when Lucifer asked Chloe to join him for a drink on the balcony. Through most of the episode, we saw Chloe taking care of Lucifer so I did like seeing the reverse; Lucifer taking care of Chloe by giving her a small reprieve from work since he knows she can easily let work take over her life. These small moments are what I absolutely thrive on and it brings me so much joy to see them together without any inhibitions. Part B better deliver as I feel like this episode sets up the foundation as Deckerstar as a couple; yes there will be drama but they have each other and they are well on their way to power through whatever comes their way.
