Week 2: The Work of Representation/Interpreting Media
How a sign can be interpreted differently in media
Tumblr media
Signs are not a part of a fixed system; they are not defined universally. Everyone can interpret a sign or a gesture differently. Usually, this difference is constructed as cultures, language and norms vary. A pattern we will see is how social and cultural backgrounds shape the interpretation of an event and why the role of the viewer is so critical. A recent example of this is the double standard surrounding Iowa's Caitlin Clark and LSU's Angel Reese. During this year’s March Madness, these two players went viral for using the gesture “You can’t see me.” Caitlin Clark initially made this gesture after she made her sixth three-pointer of the night against Louisville (Henderson). Overall, the gesture was well-received, and she even got a congratulations from John Cena (the originator of the gesture) after the game.
Tumblr media
The narrative began to shift as Angel Reese recreated this gesture during the women’s NCAA tournament. Although the gesture was the same, the media interpreted it much differently. Angel Reese got criticized for “taunting” Caitlin Clark and being “classless.” Many viewers felt that Reese displayed “ugly sportsmanship” and this was a reflection of LSU’s head coach, Kim Mulkey (Salvador). The narrative quickly received Clark as a hero and Reese as a villain. However, some viewers noticed the double standard being formed and encouraged people to see the bias behind it. What were people’s reaction saying about their individual backgrounds? Meg Linehan says, “If you celebrated Clark for doing this but not Angel Reese you got to take a long, long look in the mirror.” Linehan is referring to the racial bias that is being revealed through people’s reaction and the common stereotype of black women as “aggressive” or “angry.” Angel Reese shares “I don’t fit in the box that you all want me to be in. I’m too hood, I’m too ghetto. You told me that all year. But when other people do it, y’all don’t say nothing.” Reese herself criticizes the narrative that has been surrounding her. Overall, signs can be interpreted in many ways. In this case, the gesture was interpreted as “competitive” or “classless.” Many have pinpointed this difference as a reflection of racial bias and individual background.

PART 2:
How the NCAA's Women's basketball tournaments created a discourse that reconditioned our regimes of truth
Growing up, I watched a lot of basketball. More specifically, I watched a lot of march madness. In my house, it was the busiest month of the year. My dad worked for the NBA draft and year after year I sat on the couch with him watching these pivotal games. I never once watched a women’s basketball game.
Men’s basketball was dominant and in the world of basketball, women were often discredited. Forbes reports that in 2020, the average NBA player made five million dollars, whereas the average WNBA player made 120k. This pays difference reflects the lower ticket sales, lower attendance, and lower viewership in the WBNA. It was the reality and “regime of truth” that the NBA was more successful and entertaining.
This was until this year’s March Madness and the discourse surrounding it. For the first time, the Women’s title game received more viewers than the men’s (Porter). The women’s tournaments more than doubled its viewership. Many credit this to Caitlin Clark and her rise to super star status. The media coverage on her has been outstanding and she has taken over popularity on all platforms. Even if people started watching because of their interest in her, they learn more about the game and the other dominant players that are leading women’s basketball right now. Caitlin Clark has announced that she is declaring for the WNBA draft. This is monumental and means so many great things to come for the sport. She has left a lasting legacy and a promising future for the NCAA tournaments, but is going to bring her determination and skill into the WNBA which will hopefully cut some of these disparities. Men’s basketball may have sustained their dominance, but the future is promising, and change is on the way. For most, that change is Caitlin Clark.

Down Thomas,…

2022 WNBA Draft Hidden Gems
The first 2 picks are going to be NaLyssa Smith and Rhyne Howard. In what order remains to be seen. Everything after this is up for grabs. I want to highlight some of the players that have flown under the radar this season and most likely won't be selected in the first round.
1. Evina Westbrook (UConn, G)
Tumblr media
Westbrook came in to the season projected to be a first round pick, but has since fallen out of the first round. This is due to less playing time. UConn has focused on giving younger players playing time. She has handled this well all season. She is averaging roughly the same amount of points as last season (9.4 vs 9.5 ppg), and the same amount of steals (1.6 vs 1.7 spg). She is down on rebounds (5.3 vs 3.8 rpg). But this all tells me that she can adjust well to coming off the bench instead of starting. She can adjust to whatever role is needed of her. Not all players can do that. A lot of rookies come in to the WNBA not knowing how to be a role player. Westbrook has this ability and I think that is extremely valuable.
2. Jasmine Dickey (Delaware, SG)
Tumblr media
Jasmine Dickey is the best player that NOBODY is talking about. She is third in the nation in scoring at 25.0 PPG. At 5'10" she is averaging 9.8 rebounds a game. She is also averaging 2 steals and 1 block per game. As a guard these are impressive numbers. The downsides to her game are she is a high volume shooter, averaging 22.5 field goal attempts per game (she is averaging 40% from the floor). She does not have a 3 point shot. She is averaging just under one 3 point shot make a game with about 3 attempts per game. Having a 3 point shot is a must for a shooting guard these days. Fortunately it's something that can easily be worked on. But I think it's this lack of the 3 point shot that will make teams hesitant on drafting her.
3. Taylor Mikesell (Ohio State, SG)
Tumblr media
Mikesell has been all over the place in her collegiate career. She started in Maryland, transferred to Oregon, then transferred again to Ohio State. She has always been a good 3 point shooter, but she has taken it to another level this year. She is averaging 46.7% from deep this season, and about half of her field goal attempts are from 3 point range. It is very valuable for a team to have a player who can come off the bench and be able to have an impact on limited minutes. I think Mikesell is can be one of the players with how well she is shooting right now, and with how quickly she can get her shot off.
4. Veronica Burton (Northwestern, PG)
Tumblr media
Burton is probably the most well rounded point guard in this draft. This season she is averaging: 17.8 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 6.4 asp, 4.0 spg. Her 4 steals per game is what impresses me the most. I can see Seattle targeting her with one of their second round picks. They lost Jordin Canada in free agency, it's Sue Bird's final season, and Briann January also announced this will be her final season. I wouldn't be surprised if Seattle selects a point guard and I think they should go with Burton.
5. Emily Engstler (Louisville, SF)
Tumblr media
Engstler is one of many who transferred out of Syracuse. She has been a do it all kind of player for Louisville this season. She is an exceptional passer for a big. She knows when she needs to score and when to defer. She is scrappy and tough on defense. She reminds me a lot of another Louisville Cardinal and that's Myisha Hines-Allen. I think she's a great player who can impact a game without it showing up on the stat sheet.
6. Sika Kone (Mali, F)
Tumblr media
Sika Kone is projected by many to be selected in the first round, but I'm including her here because she is an international player that many haven't heard of. She is also out with a knee injury that will most likely sideline her for this upcoming season. So she will most likely be a stash pick this draft (Dallas or Minnesota). She is 6'3" and just 19 years old. She is currently playing in Spain and averaging 14.2 PPG and 12.2 RPG. She works hard in the post but runs the floor extremely well, and looks to be a good post passer. At just 19 she has a high ceiling.

To be fair, too, you named 1/2 easily recognizable women’s soccer players. No doubt Pinoe and Alex Morgan’s teams will get treated 1000000x better than any WNBA team but the 10 other teams in the NWSL (with other USWNT players on them) will not. I think probably similar numbers of people recognize the next top USWNT/NWSL player as any top recognizable WNBA player. It’s just those two extremely famous players carrying the weight (which does count for something—no denying that—just not much for any other team. Like does the team in Louisville benefit from Megan Rapinoe sitting in an airport in Seattle? Not too much.)
Diana Taurasi is the WNBA's leading scorer by a 2000 point margin. Her teammates can sit with her at an airport and people will ask if they're amateurs.
Women's basketball is not received the same way women's soccer is

Adidas D.O.N. Issue #2 x Louisville "A Shoe for Change"
Tumblr media
Today, former Cardinal Donovan Mitchell teamed up with adidas and his alma mater, the University of Louisville, to support current and future Black students at the school. Through his passion for education, all proceeds from the sales of the exclusive D.O.N. Issue #2 x Louisville sneaker, up to $200,000, will go towards funding several academic initiatives and scholarships. The proceeds from the adidas.com sales, of what is being coined as “A Shoe for Change,” aim to bring positive and lasting change to the Louisville community. adidas and Donovan Mitchell worked closely with the University of Louisville Office of Diversity and Equity to determine which scholarships and academic initiatives to fund to best serve their diverse student population. These initiatives include: the Woodford R. Porter Scholarship Program, the Muhammad Ali Scholar Program, the Health and Social Justice Scholars Program and an expanded emergency fund to help increase retention rates of the impacted students, allowing them to focus on their studies and work toward graduation. Additional details on the initiatives are available upon request.
Alongside Donovan Mitchell and adidas, WNBA star Angel McCoughtry also is supporting the efforts tied to her alma mater. Members of the University of Louisville men’s and women’s basketball teams will wear the limited-edition colorway in upcoming games. Donovan and Angel will send video messages to the teams explaining the significance of the new shoe and why supporting these academic initiatives and scholarships is so important to them. Donovan will debut the new colorway in his pre-season game on Dec. 17. “With my mom being a teacher and based on the values she taught me from a young age, I have always understood the importance of education, which is why adidas and I worked with my alma mater, the University of Louisville, to ensure proceeds from the Louisville colorway of D.O.N. Issue #2 would fund scholarships to support Black students,” said Donovan Mitchell. “I am passionate about giving back so having the opportunity to support the Louisville community, a place that helped shape me, is really special and it’s great my friend and champion for equality, Angel McCoughtry, is supporting these efforts as well.” “Donovan Mitchell is a special talent on the basketball court and an even better person off the court. I'm proud to call him a friend and fellow University of Louisville alum. I’m excited to work with him and adidas to support the Louisville community that means so much to me. I’m always proud to wear Donovan’s shoe on-court and I know these scholarship funds generated by the shoe’s sales will leave a lasting impact on the Black students who receive them and the greater Louisville community,” said Angel McCoughtry. D.O.N. Issue #2 x Louisville (A Shoe for Change) drops today for $100 on adidas.com. “A Shoe for Change,” represents the first sneaker available for purchase among adidas, Mitchell and the Cardinals. The sneaker’s name, D.O.N., remains a testament to Mitchell’s Determination Over Negativity aiming to be a vehicle for positive disruption on the court and in communities. The D.O.N. Issue #2 x Louisville portrays the familiar University of Louisville colors and its iconic mascot, Louie the Cardinal, featured inside the rubber outsole dunking. The shoe’s lace overlay includes the Cardinals’ rallying cry, “Louisville First, Cards Forever,” and the heel features “THE VILLE” as a tribute to the city’s long-standing nickname.

Tumblr media
I'm Anjum Khanna from India and I will share with you my best places in the USA where I visited. Pleasing Planet's movement specialists have scoured the States to present to you our main 10 underestimated, restored and incredible spots to visit in 2020. From normal marvels to enrapturing coastlines and exceptional urban areas, these objections guarantee enormous things this year.
1. California’s Redwood Coast
Lose all track of time (and cell signal) along California's Redwood Coast. Film buffs may perceive the district's scene-taking sceneries from Hollywood blockbusters like Jurassic Park, E.T. furthermore, Star Wars. In any case, the full marvel of California's 2000-year-old redwoods – some arriving at 20 stories high – is difficult to catch on any screen. Gaze toward the woodland shelter: that last 100ft of redwood development marks a long time since Redwood National Park was built up in California's tree-embracing win over logging. What's more, this year, in the festivity of their 100th commemoration, Save the Redwoods League is without offering passage to more than 40 redwood state stops each second Saturday of every month.
In 2020, another sort of greenery has been standing out as truly newsworthy as California presents the state-wide legitimization of pot. However, the draws of the Redwood Coast far outperform changes in this industry, welcoming explorers to accomplish a definitive California smooth with its peculiar shops, brewpubs, espresso roasters and calm cheerful hours.
2. Boise, Idaho
Home to a lively expressions network, a blast of grant winning wineries and specialty bottling works and a socially dependable shopping locale, Boise is what cool resembles before the remainder of the world has made sense of it. Being in closeness to an abundance of characteristic wealth, metropolitan experiences effectively progress into outside departures. Wander through the Boise River Greenbelt, a 25-mile park in the core of the city, or head into the encompassing mountains and lower regions for climbing, mountain biking, skiing and stream boating.

When minimal in excess of a refueling break among Atlanta and Nashville, the nature-driven 'Noog has changed itself into a stronghold of raised Southern living. Presently brew, expressions and clever neighborhood advancement are giving it some strut. The new Brewing Heritage Trail recounts the larger story: how Cincy was a main maker through the last part of the 1800s, its residents swallowing 2.5 occasions the public normal. Today Rhinegeist and other present day lager producers have assumed control over the relinquished distilleries, a considerable lot of which are walkable in Over-the-Rhine, an old German neighborhood of lavish block structures, new restaurants and crazy shops.

6. Midcoast, Maine
Single word says everything: 'Ayuh'. What could be compared to 'mm-hm', it's Mainers' typically eccentric and unassuming go-to answer. Is it valid, you solicit, that about 90% of Maine is forested (the most noteworthy level of any state), making it ideal for experience exercises and getting away from traveler swarms? Ayuh. Also, what about Midcoast Maine's wonderful sea exhibition halls and detonating foodie scene of art bottling works, neighborhood grape plantations and gourmet ranch-to-table cafés? It's not the tranquil woodlands it used to be. Ayuh. Indeed, 2018 will check the area's 70th Maine Lobster Festival and a transitioning as an inexorably energizing social focus of elite workmanship historical centers and exhibitions, isn't that so? Ayuh.
7. Richmond, Virginia

Scott's Addition, when an abrasive assembling region, drones with microbreweries, cideries and buzzworthy cafés, while the James River baits swashbucklers with whitewater rapids in addition to another 52-mile bicycle trail along its banks.
Creative features incorporate midtown's splendid wall paintings, the eccentric Quirk Hotel (highlighting interesting plan components and its own craft display) and imaginative transitory shows at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. The American Civil War Museum – an ongoing solidification of three separate Civil War locales – investigates Richmond's function as the capital of the Confederacy. One consistent? Patrick Henry requested freedom or demise at reenactments each Sunday in summer at St John's Church.
8. Kentucky Bourbon Country The territory of Kentucky is known for its moving slopes finished off with masterful pony cultivates, its wild commitment to school ball and, above all, its whiskey. The state's refining legacy runs profound, and those searching for a taste should make a beeline for Kentucky Bourbon Country, the brilliant triangle between Louisville, Lexington and Elizabethtown where this prepared soul becomes animated. You'll locate a luring organization of the nation's most notable refineries and first class eateries with whiskey motivated menus.

9. Minneapolis, Minnesota
In spite of arriving on arrangements of 'generally moderate' and 'generally reasonable' urban areas – and in a state positioned the USA's most joyful – Minneapolis appears to be a piece overlooked. In any case, after its chance at the center of attention during the current year's Super Bowl, that could very well change. The city endeavored to tidy up for the large occasion, specifically with redesigns to downtown's primary avenue Nicollet Mall presenting awesome light highlights, craftsmanship establishments and creative social spaces.
The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden likewise got a redo, with 18 new works by well known chiselers. Furthermore, Target Center, the city's NBA and WNBA field, got a fan-accommodating $145 million makeover. In the interim, new boutique inns and present day ranch to-table cafés (hefty on neighborhood fixings) are springing up with cool verve.
10. Southeastern Utah Arches National Park's colorful sandstone ranges. Island in the Sky's Colorado River-cut vistas. Landmark Valley's sky-puncturing towers. Southeast Utah's significant milestones have been firm top picks among voyagers for quite a long time. As of late, nonetheless, lesser-realized territorial destinations like the forested levels of the new Bears Ears National Monument have become hot-button news things because of political tussles in Washington, DC over securing characteristic and social assets.
This tremendous quarter of the Beehive State holds numerous outstanding outside objections, from the lodging filled experience town of Moab and uncrowded Capitol Reef to the environmental Ancestral Puebloan vestiges of Hovenweep. Water has slashed the desert scene here, cutting the sandstone into alarming structures, for example, the pleasant Natural Bridges and huge Lake Powell. This is a quintessential Americana excursion nation.
