You listened to the occasional passing car, the sound of your own breathing, and the tapping of your foot louder. The quiet music playing in the shop began to annoy you as it started looping for about the third time during today’s shift. You had just finished wiping down the front counter, slowly rolling a tech deck back and forth with your fingers. You leaned your head on your other hand and sighed, looking up at the clock for the umpteenth time. Soon your shift would be over, and you could go home and relax. By the second you were starting to regret covering for your coworker’s shift.
You worked in a rather popular skate shop in town. You loved the aesthetic of the shop; posters, skateboards, and printed shirts lined the walls. You remember walking in on the first day and immediately falling in love. The owner was so happy to see how excited you were for work.
Smiling back at the memory, you did a little ollie on the desk, accidentally sending it flying when the front door swung open, fluffy bright auburn and baby blue hair immediately catching your eye. Their conversation immediately halted when Reki turned and made eye contact with you. You both paused, staring at each other, before he ran across the shop floor and almost jumped up on the counter, with the brightest eyes,
“I didn’t know you were working today!” he cried out at you,
“Ah! Yeah… I’m covering a coworker’s shift, she couldn’t make it…” you sheepishly rubbed the back of your neck when Langa stepped up,
“You look...really bored…” You just blinked up at him, slowly becoming embarrassingly flushed.
“Is your shift almost over?” Reki had sloped down against the counter, his fingers now playing with the tech deck. You nodded at his question.
“Yeah, I’ve been bored for hours and I can’t wait to leave” You sighed, and Reki jumped back up
“Hey! If your shift is just about over, why don’t you come with us to hang out afterward?”
“I don't…”
“It’ll be fun! Right, Langa?”
“...yeah, and besides… you could probably use it” He gave you a small smile that you couldn’t help but return.  Reki was beating his fingers against the counter, waiting for your answer,
“Okay, okay sure yeah why not. You guys can hang out for about fifteen more minutes and then I can go grab my stuff from the back.” Reki started to cheer.
Reki pushed away from the counter and immediately went over to look at the boards. Langa watched the skateboard toy roll across the counter when Reki let go of it, and then turned to look around the store. He was looking around at all the colorful posters, graphic hoodies, and signed shirts from famous bands or skaters. He could definitely see why Reki kept going on and on about bringing him here.
“You know, Langa, you can put your bag down behind the counter so you don’t have to carry it around” You offered your hand out to him, and his eyes were stuck staring at your form. You cocked your head to the side when he didn’t answer, and he seemingly snapped out of it, his pale cheeks flushing,
“Sorry... And thank you” He handed you his shoulder bag and while you bent over to put it away, he fiddled with his fingers,
“Hey, I’m actually really excited to see you skate with us, I hope you can teach me something new or give me some tips” You jolted back up and Reki burst into a fit of laughter before coming back to lean on Langa’s shoulder,
“Ohoho! I almost forgot to mention!” You immediately tried to signal him to shut the hell up, but Reki being the little troublemaker he is, chose to ignore you,
“Our dear friend here doesn’t know how to skate!” You sighed. Yeah, you didn’t know how to skate. You worked in a skate shop and really loved your job, but you didn’t know how to skate. Your friends and coworkers always liked to tease you for it, and you always meant to learn, but never actually did.
You shrunk in on yourself, muddled in your embarrassment when Langa let out a small laugh,
“Yeah yeah, I get it, the girl who works in a skate shop doesn’t know how to stake. Big deal. You don't have to rub it in—”
“No no, that’s not why I’m laughing. I don't know how to skate either. Reki is teaching me”
“Wait, really?” he nods. “I never could have guessed!”
You two smiled at each other and Reki laughed again, before going back to admire the trucks on a board he had picked up off the shelf.
Once your shift ended, you and the boys headed out of the shop. You were headed to the local skatepark, but in the middle of explaining the plans, Reki and Langa’s stomach grumbled, so first, you were off to get some lunch.
After debating on what to get for lunch, and then debating what to order after Reki’s teasing, you guys had ended up at the skatepark. Reki did a quick stretch and quickly jumped on his board, climbing the quarter pipe effortlessly. You watched in awe, never able to understand how he could skate so easily. Langa pulled out his board and passed you, setting his things down before walking closer to the ramp. You followed him, and Reki offered you his hand. You reached for him, and he pulled you up, sitting pressed to his side while he hooked his board on the rim using the back wheels. Kicking his feet, he ponders to himself while Langa waits for him to speak up.
“Oh, oh! I know! How about you keep working on that practice routine I showed you yesterday, it’ll definitely help in your next beef!” Langa seemed to think it over a bit, before nodding and skating off to find more space.
“Routine…?” You ask,
“Mhmm! I’m trying to get him to learn more tricks and tactics so he can win more beefs at ‘S’. He can’t just keep taping his feet to the board if he means to keep skating.”
“Ohh, well he seems to be doing just fine!”
“He’s improved really fast, he doesn’t fall as much anymore—” Right when he said that, Langa let out a yelp and fell flat on his back, his board flying out from under him, “That being said, he still falls occasionally. Hey, Langa! Why don’t you come take a break and I’ll skate around for a bit?” Langa nodded and skated over to the quarter pipe while Reki stood, gliding down and heading towards the grind rails to practice his own tricks.
Langa took his spot next to you, leaning back and closing his eyes, taking in the nice weather. You turned to him and smiled,
“You’re getting really good! I don't know how you manage to ride it so easily even though you’re still learning”
Langa blinked at you silently, and sheepishly rubbed his neck,
“Thanks… You know I’m sure if you gave it a try you would be pretty good yourself.”
“Ahh! I appreciate the thought! But, I’ve already..kinda..attempted...In the past, and it just didn’t seem to work out in the past. I’m much more content providing you and Reki and people like you two with gear and good customer service..” Reki skated his way over.
“Nope! You’re trying again.”
“Wait wh— “
“Come on! Slide down!”
Langa gave you a gentle push, before sliding down the ramp himself and Reki pulled
you over by the hands to his board. You hesitantly put one foot on the board but you could feel your legs start to shake when you try to lift off the ground. Langa came up next to you and offered you his hand. Gripping it, you managed to stand on the board. He slowly tried to let your hands go so you could balance on your own, but once you were totally on your own you swung your arms around until finding balance. Actually standing on the board felt… weirdly nice. It wasn’t as scary as you first thought, especially after taking the initiative to start. You heard Reki call your name, snapping his fingers. He stood a good few feet in front of you, his arms outstretched, waiting to catch you,
“Well? Come on! Kick off the ground and push yourself over here”
“Reki I can’t—”
“Sure you can!” Like it didn’t even need to be said, Langa put his hand on the small of your back and slowly pushed you to give you a head start. That’s when you started losing your balance. You glided forward towards Reki on the board, and not knowing how to stop, you started shifting your weight and you heard Langa start to say something and turned to look at him when the board flew out from under your feet and you fell back into Reki’s arms. His arms hooked under yours, holding your top half up against him. Langa starts to panic, asking if you’re okay or hurt. For someone who gets hurt from learning to skate on the regular, he sure does worry when someone else gets hurt.
Your gaze just shifts between the two, one more worried than the other, but still worried. Your face cracks into a grin and you start laughing, pushing yourself up to stand properly in Reki’s hold. You grasp his hands in yours, and bring them up,
“Please teach me to skate!!”
The two boys stopped, their faces changing from concerned to confused, before lighting up. You had never seen them smile brighter.

Those Shoes (Ch.3)
Song Inspired: I Want You by Savage Garden
Notes: @youtubequeens Hope you stay hydrated and have a lovely time! <3 Here’s this bit for now :3
Warnings: Creepy people, not getting the hint that a person’s uncomfortable, unwanted flirting, and talk about emotions bc honestly what are they?
He smiled as Eijirou took a bite of his onigiri, Tamaki sighed softly at his younger brother, as said boy had specks of sticky rice on his face.
It was a lazy Sunday morning, the boys were home from school, and Taishiro was enjoying his day off.
“Did ya have a good day at work, Papa?” The ruby-eyed boy inquired, and Tai smiled, ruffling his hair.
“Ya bet I did, kiddo.”
He didn’t tell his boys what he had exactly did for a living, but he promised himself that he would, in the future. So far, all they knew is that he was a professional dancer.
“Dancing must be hard.” Tamaki broke the silence after chewing on his scrambled egg, and his father laughed.
“Nah. It takes a lotta practice. Did you boys had fun at yer day at school?” He pondered, sipping from his cup of coffee.
“Yeah! There was a nice new boy who was shy! There were some mean kids, but I protected him!” Eijirou rambled excitedly. Taishiro chuckled, and then looked at Tamaki.
“Mirio fell in a puddle. Face first. I had to take him to the nurse.” He shrugged, yet Taishiro didn’t miss the soft glint that speckled in his eyes. He smiled.
“That kid’s pretty resilient, huh? Anyways, eat yer breakfast, then we’ll head out to the park, alright?”
………………
It was a pretty November day. Skeleton trees hovered beneath the rich blue sky as your shoes crunched up against the fallen colorful leaves. Although it hasn’t been a week, yet, you were slowly re-adapting to your hostess job, and nit and tucking the dancer’s clothes.
You were surprised on how many had requested your services, staying absolutely still as you kept a cool facade, keeping the pointed needle from digging into skin as you measured, cut, and sewed loose fabric. You believed in your abilities, yet it felt as if it didn’t matter.
You weren’t good at holding the obvious flirty conversations that somehow were being thrown at you out of nowhere. They would giggle, and you had to still your hand so that you couldn’t accidentally jab their shaking bodies, whilst trying to be polite.
Where did the sudden interest come from? You wondered. Your mother, undoubtedly, was on high alert as she noticed it, too. The flirting, joking, the inquiring questions. Luckily, the fitting room had a camera, and thankfully, your patients had known it too, so they were extra careful in not doing anything that was against the regulations. Your mother was watching, you all knew.
Speaking of which, she did not try to make things better. She would wink, or make subtle little jokes, as she explained that it was good for business. You couldn’t help but press your mouth in a firm line.
You worked so hard, finding the perfect materials, ignoring your own discomfort as you bit the bullet and tried to focus on making the outfit snug and resilient, while the owners ignored your tense shoulders and set jaw. You were appalled, as they used alluring honeyed words, directed your attention to a “loose” fabric between their thighs, and so on.
You, feeling a surge of retaliation, growled out that it would cost extra for you to fix certain areas, and preferred that the outfit was on a mannequin, instead.
Your spitfire attitude had certainly weeded out a few of the unwanted customers, but, gained some more who thought it was a challenge. You didn’t miss the look of sheer pride from your mother, however, as she sported a wicked grin.
“That’ll teach them. Might make your blond a little less jealous.” She winked, and you paled in question. He was jealous? Of what? You were only doing your job, charging the dancers a certain amount, and giving your mother, your boss, a small part of the revenue as she requested. Although a thorn in your side, she was also a beautiful rose, and you knew that she was helping you in her own way, thus, opening your eyes more to the situation.
It didn’t take you long to realize, that yes, he was jealous, and you were too busy to acknowledge the possibility, until your mother had to basically tell you. So, you took your time to observe your surroundings.
Daggers for a stare had met each and everyone of the customers who had followed you into the fitting room, you’ve seen. While hosting, you started to take breaks to watch him, much to the oddly placed chagrin in the other dancers. His style was a little different, more suave and seductive, rather than downright dirty. Back against the pole, he slid up slowly as he jutted out his chin, staring at you through blond lashes while sucking suggestively at one of his suckers, hardly minding the crowd as he gave you a show that was basically personal.
He was addictive, you couldn’t help but think. His outfits, dances, and downright attitude made the other’s shadow in comparison.
It brought you back to the present. Your feet shuffled against the dirt as you pushed yourself on the swing, breathing out huffs of warm air that meshed with the chilly atmosphere.
He didn’t make you feel too uncomfortable, either. He did make a request, to tuck in a few strings into his nurse outfit, you remembered it so clearly. He had strutted into your office around the right time, white fishnet stockings and heels blended in nicely with the light aqua blue fabric that left very little to the imagination.
“Jus’ some strings near the neck, Sugar. Might even give ya a sucker if ya behave.” He winked, and you couldn’t help but laugh at how corny it was, earning a smug smile and tinted cheeks. Although a little flirty, he stood perfectly still as you fixed the frayed mess that was near his clavicle, feeling his warmth resonate around you as you couldn’t help but seep it in. You hoped that he wouldn’t say anything about it. How you could feel a thundering, fast-paced heartbeat underneath your fingertips, despite his cocky facade, your face blushing immensely, or how the atmosphere seemed as if it might just break from underneath the metaphorical weight between the two of you.
However, true to his word, he began letting out pieces of information.
“We actually go to the same college.”
You stopped to stare at him with full surprise.
“What? Really?”
“Well, ya graduated before I did, but I live near the campus. I…kinda saw ya every day. Not as a stalker!” He rushed before you could think of anything.
“-as in, my road to the school kinda passes your road, and I couldn’t help but not look away when ya were…ya know…It’s a very connected town, so I’ve seen ya…around.”
Then it hit you.
“Ah, so you must’ve seen me doing volunteer work?” You murmured, and he nodded.
“Well, yeah. You’re a familiar face. Couldn’t really ignore ya, ‘specially when you’re bein’ so wonderful half the damned time. Ya don’t know me, and I know it might be a lil’ creepy, but I promise ya that I don’t mean to be.” He babbled, face tinting a little more pink, and your ears burned from the forward acknowledged statement.
So he noticed your volunteer work, and where you lived, and yet you didn’t really see him creeping around the bushes, or any tall figure of his build stalking around, for instance.
“So…is this why you have a sudden interest?” You asked, and you heard him swallow thickly.
“Pretty much. Doesn’t help that you’re kinda allurin’. Like a magnet.” He finished lamely, eyes shifting as he bit his bottom lip, and you couldn’t believe the shy signals that he was giving off as your own cheeks burned.
“Ah. Um…yeah.” You couldn’t help but say, and he snorted. You jutted your chin up and was about to give him a piece of your mind.
“We’re both kinda terrible at this. Anyways, that’s what I wanted to tell ya. Been seein’ ya around and makin’ the world a better place, an’ so I couldn’t help but like ya.” He waved off your short-lived glare as your expression softened.
“I don’t understand? You’re shy but not?” You questioned, nipping the small extra thread that you’ve already tucked in.
He shrugged.
“Emotions are emotions. Ya do things to me that I can’t explain, and I make ya into a flustered mess, and vice versa. I was at first too fuckin’ scared to really say or do anything, because the last thing I wanna be, is to be a creepy stalker in yer eyes.”
“I think I understand. As I don’t believe that you are a stalker…um…how do you? How did you-”
“Body language is a dead giveaway. Studyin’ to be a therapist. Plus, it’s relievin’ to get another validation that ya don’t find me creepy. ‘Specially after hearin’ my story.” He grinned, and your shoulders relaxed as you finished up your work.
“Ah, all done?” He pouted, and you couldn’t help but roll your eyes.
“You have another appointments, as well as my number.” You reasoned, and his eyes lit up.
“So, I could call ya?” He asked hopefully, and you found yourself nodding before you could comprehend what he said.
“Awesome. I’ll see ya around, Chickadee.” He hummed, digging into his wallet as he paid you upfront, letting his hand brush against yours, and yet you didn’t mind. All too fleeting, he sauntered away, but not before giving you a final look.
“The ball is in yer hands, in whichever ya want this to be. Although, I gotta up my game, if I wanna keep the competition at bay.” He winked, and then turned to leave the room. The wheels in your head had seemed to stop, before whirling again with realization.
So, he was aware of it all? The flirting and unwanted attention that you were gaining? As if he had to compete against anybody, you couldn’t help but think.
He wasn’t like the other “suitors” who were more aggressive and rude, you couldn’t help but think, your chest fluttering at the idea of him being your partner.
It’s been three days after that. You did shoot him a text, and almost immediately, he responded. He was forward with his interest, and you were still in a bit of confusion, why he, still a stranger, had decided to pursue you so quickly. You couldn’t help but think that the stars must have aligned in the both of your favor, or that it must have been fate, for you couldn’t help but start to like him, as well.
His forward approach, his respectful nature, the duality of his emotions, on how he could be so forward, and yet somehow kind of shy, he hunted at a distance, not too close or disrupting your boundaries, while never failing to look for you, or put on a show.
An excited voice rambled you out of your thoughts, a very, familiar excited voice, and your attention snapped towards the direction at the upcoming person, or people.
……………………………….
He sucked. He was a sucker, and he let his emotions get the best of him. Why did he have to spill out everything? Now she knew that he was an eager fool, and he didn’t mention the most important part; his two boys. Although not biologically his, blood didn’t matter, they were his sons.
Of course, while in his interest in pursuing, he was so caught up with classes, dancing, and raising his kids, a lot of things had passed his mind. He remembered laying in the darkness of his bedroom, staring up at the ceiling as his heart clenched.
What if she was only attracted to his dancing? The two of them had never made plans to meet outside of work, and if they did, would she be turned off by his more shy attitude? His more softer, meeker side? Unwanted thoughts swirled within his head.
He was making a mistake, he was putting too much time into a woman who he barely knew, and if she did like him, would she like his boys? They would always be his first and top priority, he could never lower their needs before a potential future partner.
Growling, he picked up his phone, searching for her contact. He began typing, and re-typing as he made sure that the sentence sounded perfect.
Me: I know it’s late, but do ya wanna go to the park, tomorrow around 9 am?
He bit his lip and pressed send. It’ll just be a hang out, he told himself. He’ll bring his sons, and if she reacted negatively, he would stop cold. Maybe move to another club. It was his fault for not mentioning that he had kids, and he didn’t blame her for not wanting to deal with him for not telling her in the first place. She was an adult, she could make her own decisions, and children might not be her priority, and he could respect that. The fated ding of his phone pulled him out of his thoughts.
Chickadee: Sure. It’s supposed to be chilly, tomorrow, so wear something warm.
His cheeks felt like fire as his heart warmed up from the thoughtfulness. A chuckle escaped his throat. Even while texting, she still used proper grammar, and he couldn’t help but find that adorable. He kind of hoped that she wouldn’t be upset that he had kids, and he wouldn’t force her into anything that she didn’t want, if he did break it to her that he wanted to see her as a partner.
He was a dumb mess, he told himself. However, he wouldn’t mind to have her as a good friend, if anything else. He couldn’t help but like her, and she had a blunt, straight to the point attitude mixed in with that sweetness.
……………….
“-lunch lady?!” A voice gasped in shock, the three familiar figures caught your full attention. Time stood still as you recognized the two small boys instantly, and behind them, stood none other than Taishiro. Surprise had hit you, but you couldn’t help but feel joy as little arms wrapped around your leg as you stopped the swing, seeing Eijirou glanced up at you with a toothy smile and bright eyes.
You couldn’t help but smile, pinching his cheeks a little as he giggled.
“Hey, um, small world?” Taishiro asked, breaking you out of your trance.
“I volunteered at the orphanage a while back. That’s amazing, I’m so glad to you two, again.” You explained, looking at the boys.
“It’s good to see you, as well.” Tamaki said softly, and you smiled at the slightly older boy who gripped Taishiro’s jacket.
“Oh, that’s pretty neat. Ya were in dietary?” He asked, sitting down on the swing next to you, Tamaki following closely. You looked down a bit shyly.
“Um, yeah. They were kind of short staffed, that year, and I was a pretty familiar face, so they asked, and I said yes.” You rambled, and he chuckled.
“You’re right about the pretty part.” He winked, and you huffed out a surprised laugh.
“Do you ever not flirt?” You inquired, and he grinned.
“I don’t flirt as much as ya think. Anyways, I wanted to know, if ya like to hang out with us, for the day?” He murmured softly at the end, and you felt yourself smile a little.
“I’d like to. It’s been a while since I’ve seen the boys. Although I missed the children, I couldn’t really stay, had college to go through, you know? It’s good that they’ve been adopted.” You rambled, watching Tamaki push Eijirou gently on the swing next to yours, the shyest of smiles graced the raven-hair’s features as the two were basically in their own little world.
“When I first came to this town, I didn’t really have anybody. So I took some time to think it over, and decided to adopt. They’ve been the light of my life for three years, now. Can’t imagine bein’ without ‘em.” He said softly, and you felt a burst of warmth envelop you.
“It’s good that they have a good dad. Do they know of your-?” You let the sentence hang, and he shook his head.
“Later. I doubt that they’ll judge, but I don’t want ‘em to know, just yet.”
It surprised you on how easy it was to make small talk, each of you opening up a little bit more. You fixed Tamaki’s coat, brushing the hair out of his eyes slightly when Taishiro had offered the group to get hot chocolate from the coffee shop that was near, chuckling as Eijirou’s eyes widened with pure glee.
Tamaki gripped your hand, Eijirou gripped Taishiro’s, and Taishiro held your free hand as the four of you crossed the street, and you couldn’t help but feel warmth at the domesticated atmosphere within your little group.
You wouldn’t mind if these sudden feelings stayed a little while longer.

WHAT ARE YOU SERIOUS YOU CAN’T JUST CUT ME OFF LIKE THAT NOOOOOOO COME OOOOOOON
AAAAAGH THAT WAS SO GOOD THOUGH
I am really enjoying this show.  It kinda feels like starting Steven Universe all over again--stylistically and aesthetically it’s fun to watch, it’s funny, the characters are entertaining and likable, it’s fun to tease and makes great material for alt dialogue skits.  I’m really looking forward to seeing more of it as soon as I can.
That won't necessarily be happening immediately, though.  The patron who had me do She-Ra has ended their participation in that tier, so unless someone else picks it as their patronage pick (there’s a fresh slot open for that, if anyone’s interested) it'll be a while.
Or!
We actually still need to pick a replacement for Madoka Magica, which as I said will be on hiatus indefinitely!
As always, my patrons get to suggest shows and then vote on a list I provide, so if you’re pledged then get suggesting, but I'm gonna be adding She-Ra to the list of shows you get to vote on.  There’s a post up on my Patreon where you can suggest shows, so feel free to post ideas without actually casting a final vote, but I want you guys to know that this one's on the table.
Again, there’s a free slot in the “pick a show” patron tier on my Patreon!  If you’ve got a show you want me to watch, click this link and pledge!  People have asked me to post publicly when slots open up, and there’s only one open right now, so go snag it if you want it.
IN OTHER NEWS:
I am very unwell.
At this point it’s harmful to myself for me to pretend otherwise.  I am having the worst couple months I’ve had in years.  My Seasonal Affective Disorder is going haywire, one of my medicines isn’t helping as well as it should, I haven’t been able to afford to get the other one for a bit.  I’m suffering from insomnia, daily anxiety attacks, horrible self-worth issues.  I’m behind on bills.  My phone’s been off for weeks.  I’ve been dealing with Patreon disappearing some of my payout money all month and desperately trying to get the Minecraft server host to respond to my customer service tickets at all.  I’m stressed out of my mind.  I’m a mess.  I’m in the worst mental health state I’ve been in a long, long time.
The content I’ve been putting out for you guys has been suffering for quite a while because of my issues but those issues have really risen to a fever pitch of shittiness in the last couple months.  I’m working on the less tangible stuff in my life that you guys can’t really help me with, but...seriously, if anyone can help me monetarily, please, please drop by my donation box.  I need help, guys.  I’ve tried looking for work, but this tiny town’s dead, and even after brute-force applying everywhere in this town and the next one over (which I can only get to via a 45 minute bike ride) the only place that even called me back was a friend’s family-owned restaurant, which I didn’t do well at.  (It isn’t helping my state of mind that my parents keep telling me to just get a job in spite of the aforementioned job application saturation, let me tell you.)
Anyways, I won’t rant more about the state of my life; I let this go on too long as it is.  Things are tight all around, too--I won’t blame anyone for not throwing money at me if they need it themselves, but, please, if you can spare a few dollars, it’d help me a lot in digging myself out of the hole I’m in.  Whether any of you donate or not, though, I want you all to know how much getting to do this for you all means to me.  I have no higher purpose in life than to make people smile, and the fact I can entertain so many of you warms me up on the coldest nights.
Thank you.

"Are you flirting with me?” and pruaus, if that's possible^^?
It absolutely is! In this one, Gilbert and Roderich are both about 16 or 17, in high school. Playing around with these two and their interactions is so much fun ^.^ I hope you like it!
Roderich was used to skeevy customers. He had been working at the movie theater a little over a year, and could handle just about anything. Customer upset with prices? Smile politely and explain that he wasn’t in charge of the prices. Customer criticizes his work? Thank them for their feedback and promise to do a better job next time. Customer leering at him? Granted, Roderich still felt uncomfortable with that, but generally he was able to push them through quick enough to avoid the worst of the awkward pick-up lines and hand touches. He truly wished he could just tell them to buzz off, but he had a feeling that he would have to find a new job if he did.
So he went with it as graciously as he could. He endured the creepy looks and the ‘accidental’ touches, the inappropriate comments and the phone numbers hastily written on receipts. Back when he first started, he would occasionally keep one of the phone numbers if they were particularly attractive. Every one of them that he had hooked up with turned out to be as boring as a sack of rocks. Now he just threw the numbers away the minute the customer was out of sight. It was just much easier to evade and misdirect the creeps and perverts. Gilbert turned out be neither.  •••The first time he actually spoke with him, Roderich was at a register, and Gilbert was waiting in line to buy tickets with two other people. Of course, Roderich had seen him around school before, but there had never been a reason to interact with him. His group appeared to be a rowdy bunch. Roderich could only watch in anxious anticipation, hoping that they would be called to another open register; maybe Elizabeta would be able to take care of them. She did much better with people like them. Roderich, on the other hand, had a hard time dealing with loud people. But of course, he had no such luck. He had no customers to take care of, so he waved them over. As they meandered towards him, Roderick found himself clicking his tongue impatiently. They hadn’t even spoke to him and he was already tired of them. Still, he had a job to do, and that job mandated that he smile and greet everyone cheerfully. Putting on his best service tone, Roderich beamed at them and let loose his usual spiel. “Hello! How are you guys doing?”“Better, now that I’ve seen your smile,” the one with silvery hair said with a wink. “I’m sure,” Roderich replied dryly. Another one of these. Just push through it. “What movie did you want to see?”“Movie. Right. Well, you like you have good taste. Can you think of anything we might like to look at?”“You mean watch, Gilbert,” one of his lackeys chimed in. “It sounds weird to say ‘look at’ movies.”Huffing irritably, the boy- Gilbert- waved the other boy off, keeping his attention on Roderich instead. “Ignore him. I swear, walking around with these two and having to look at their same old mugs is getting tiring. I’d much rather spend some time looking at your face. Maybe over dinner?” He was briefly interrupted when the girl behind him whacked his shoulder for the comment. “In any case, have you seen anything you like lately?”“Actually no. Lately I’ve found that almost everything is cheap and shallow. But I’m sure that’s something you wouldn’t mind.”The other member of the small group, the girl this time, let out a prolonged ‘oooooh’ sound before laughing and slapping Gilbert on the back. “Wow. Who’da thought there’d be a day when the amazing Gilbert doesn’t get what he wants. Even better, the one he wants just totally owned him!”“Emma, don’t say owned, that died out a few years ago.” For his part, Gilbert looked equally disgruntled and abashed. “I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable just now. That wasn’t cool. Let’s just get three tickets to Wonder Woman.”The other two hummed and nodded in agreement. “Sounds good. I’m gonna run in and get in line for some popcorn. Meet you guys in there. Come on Antonio.” Emma said, already walking away. The other boy tailed her closely. An awkward silence ensued as Roderich focused his attention on the screen to print off the tickets, determinedly avoiding eye contact. As soon as the third stub printed off, he snagged them and slid them over to Gilbert. “Enjoy the movie.”“Thanks- seriously, I am sorry. I shouldn't’ve been that guy.”Sighing, Roderich shrugged carelessly. “It happens a lot, I’m pretty used to it. At least you were somewhat classy. Some of the things I hear are just vulgar. And- well, the fact that you’re ridiculously attractive makes me a bit less upset.”A slow  grin began to spread across Gilbert’s face. “You think I’m attractive?”“More so than a lot of my other customers, at least.” Roderich had a feeling that this boy’s ego was large enough without anyone else’s help. “Speaking of, I’ve got a line starting to pile up behind you. So if there’s nothing else I can do for you, you should probably go find your friends.”•••Roderich didn’t see Gilbert again for another three weeks. When he finally showed up, Gilbert had zeroed in on him quickly and made a beeline to his line. “How’s my favorite customer service worker?”“I’m sure I’m not your favorite. I’m doing well though, thank you. What were you gonna see?”“You’re so direct. Not into small talk in general, or just me?”“In general. I’m here to work, not stand around talking all day.” Strictly speaking, he wasn’t lying, but truth be told, about 80% of his job was spent standing around all day and talking with coworkers while they waited for someone to show up. No need for Gilbert to know that. “Now, what can I get you?”“Your phone number?”“Nope. What do you want to see?”“More of you.”“If you’re just going to waste me time-“Rolling his eyes, Gilbert lifted his hands in surrender. “Alright! I’ll see Spider-Man. You know,” he added as Gilbert fiddled around behind the counter, “one of these days I’ll bet you look forward to talking to me. I’ll bet ten dollars and a dinner date you do.”“So, if I told you to just stop talking to me, would you?”Without missing a beat, Gilbert nodded. “Just say the word and I’m gone. You haven’t said it yet though, so I’ve still got a chance. I mean, at the very least you’re interested in me.”It was impossible for Gilbert to know what Roderich was thinking as he surveyed him closely. Finally, the ticket finished printing and Roderich was able to hand it over and wave Gilbert along. Choosing to ignore the commentary, Roderich simply dropped the subject altogether. “Go on, go enjoy your movie.”“Your wish is my command,” Gilbert said, bowing dramatically. “I will enjoy this movie just for you.”“As long as you enjoy it away from me.” Although his words were firm, Roderich’s tone and the ghost of a smile on his face let Gilbert know that he wasn’t being entirely serious. •••It didn’t take as long as Roderich had thought before he saw Gilbert again. He seemed to be coming more and more frequently, sometimes surrounded by friends, other times all alone. One day, after the third time Gilbert showed up in one week, Roderich confronted him. “Are you stalking me or something?” he asked bluntly. If he was offended, Gilbert hid it well. “No. I just like movies. Talking to you is a side perk, that’s all.”“Really?”“I promised, didn’t I? If you want me to back off, just say so. I’ve got a feeling that stalking you would be going overboard. I don’t wanna ruin my chances,” Gilbert said reasonably. “Why?”“You intrigue me. I don’t get turned down very often. But you seem like you’ve got a branch stuck up your ass, so I’m not gonna push too hard. Just one ticket for Girl’s Trip.”The incredulous look he got made Gilbert crack up. “A what up my what? Is your ego really that big?”“No, it’s not! I just wanna see what you’re like when you let loose a little. You’ve gotta admit, you’re pretty stiff.”“I don’t have to admit anything.” Roderich scowled at Gilbert a little longer, before shaking his head and moving on. “Anyway, I thought you were a fan of superheroes ? That’s a bit of a flip there.”“Eh. It’ll still be fun. I don’t wanna tie myself down to just one genre. Did you know that there’s over 500,000 movies out there right now?”“That sounds a bit high.” “It’s true! It would be impossible to watch every single movie ever made in one lifetime,” Gilbert insisted. “I remember looking it up when I was a kid ‘cause I wanted to do it.”“Oh- that’s actually kinda cute.”“Really? I mean, if you think that’s cute, I’ve got some other stories that you’ll think are adorable then-”“I said kinda,” Roderich cut in. “$5.50 for the ticket, please.”“I’m getting to you, aren’t I?” Gilbert was grinning as he handed his card over to Roderich to pay. His smile was annoyingly cocky, but Roderich still felt himself wanting to smile back. Maybe it was the enthusiastic way he spoke, or the confidence with which he held himself. Or maybe Roderich really was just warming up to him. Still, Roderich didn’t want to encourage him anymore today. “Nope. Here. Enjoy the movie.”“I’ll try,” Gilbert said with a wink. “Catch ya later!”Well, he was persistent, Roderich had to give him that. And although he was noisy and abrasive, Roderich was finding more and more that he actually enjoyed listening to Gilbert talk. Especially when it was something the Gilbert was especially eager to talk about. The excited glimmer in his eyes when he got going was contagious, and as much as he wanted to deny it, Roderich was starting to look forward to seeing him. Each encounter revealed new bits of Gilbert, most of which were fairly predictable. Noisy theater kid, always surrounded by friends, could likely have any girl or boy he wanted. Altogether not what Roderich had thought he was interested in. But the days when Gilbert came alone were different. Roderich was able to see a more humble boy with actual thoughts and feelings, as opposed to the exalted and revered teenage god that he was treated as in school. Granted, when Roderich thought about it, he couldn’t really think of a reason to dislike him aside from his obnoxious need to talk about anything and everything. He was respectful towards teachers, enthusiastic in everything he did, accepting everyone as they were. As obnoxious as he was with his friends, he was always kind and polite. Altogether, Gilbert was a bit of an enigma. Annoying, funny, egocentric, caring. A great blob of contradictions, wrapped up in a ridiculously handsome body. All Roderich really knew was that, the more he saw Gilbert, the more interested he became. •••The day that Gilbert came in with someone new was the day Roderich finally decided to take a chance on him. The boy he was standing in line with couldn’t have been older than 7, and he seemed to be very excited about all the bustle of the movie theater. He was holding onto Gilbert’s hand- or rather, Gilbert was holding on his hand. It seemed he was trying to tug away from Gilbert to run off and explore himself, as so many children his age wanted to do. Still, Gilbert wouldn’t hear it. “No Ludwig, you’re not big enough to be running around alone. There’s a lot of people here, I don’t want you getting lost.”“But I promise I won’t get lost!”“Or you could get snatched up by someone who wants a pesky little brother.”“I promise I won’t get snatched up! Waiting in line is boring.”“I know buddy. But we’re almost done, and then we’ll go in and get some snacks and watch our movie. Look, it’s our turn now! Do you want to tell him what movie we want to see?”For all his bold declarations, Ludwig stared suspiciously over the counter at Roderich. “We want to see the Wonder Woman movie.” Roderich couldn’t help but notice that his tone was much more cautious than it had just been when he was talking with his older brother. Gilbert hadn’t missed the change either. He laughed and patted Ludwig between the shoulder blades. “That my Lud. A pro at stranger danger.”Seeing Gilbert this way was surprising. The proud smile, the gentle hands, the fretting, all made Roderich start to question his understanding of Gilbert. Was he like this all the time, when he wasn’t making a spectacle of himself to impress others? Suddenly seeing him so protective of his brother, so sensitive and soft toward him, Roderich found himself entirely fascinated. This was the side of Gilbert he had been hoping to see. Roderich stared at Gilbert closely while the tickets were printing. “Wonder Woman again?”Gilbert nodded. “I loved it. Luddys a smart kid, I think he’ll like it. And it’s like, the best superhero movie ever.”“Oh. Would you see it again after this?”“Yeah! I mean, if I had the money.”“We get discounts here.” Roderich kept his statement short. He wasn’t even entirely sure what it was he was trying to hint at. “That’s cool. Maybe I should start working here.” Why did that make Roderich’s heart skip a beat? Could he actually be interested in Gilbert? “Ah- yeah, you should. I haven’t seen Wonder Woman yet.”“Man, you’re missing out! It’s so good!”Roderich nearly facepalmed. By now Ludwig was bounding on the balls on his feet, and he kept tugging at Gilbert’s arm. If Roderich didn’t make his movie quickly, he would miss his chance. “I would like to see it. But I don’t have anyone to go with.”Ludwig groaned when Roderich didn’t drop the subject. “Gilbert, let’s go! Come on!”Gilbert chuckled and took a step to follow Ludwig.  “Hey, handsome guy like you, I’m sure you’ll find someone easily enough,”Although a part of him wanted to just let Gilbert walk away, a bigger, braver part of himself was determined to go through with it. “Actually, I do have someone in mind.”“Oh? Who?”“A frequent customer. He always seemed like a bit of an ass, but lately I’ve noticed that he’s actually funny, and sweet. I’m not even sure that he’s capable of intentionally being mean to someone. Not to mention how hot he is.”Gilbert had been studying Roderich closely as he spoke. “Are you talking about me?”“How’d you know?” Roderich asked, with just a slight bit of sarcasm. “Wait- Roderich, are you flirting with me?”“What? Is it flirting to say someone else is visually pleasing? And that you’d like to take that someone on a date?”“That is exactly what flirting is! What, have you never done it before? Oh!”“What?”“Did you mean it? That you want to go on a date? Because I have some- okay Lud! We’ll being going in just a second,” he promised when Ludwig jerked on his arm again. “I just gotta finish my talk here.”“But I don’t want to listen to you talk! You’re boring, and just wasting time! Anyway, all you guys are trying to do are just to hook up with each other so you can go make out in Gilbert’s room!”At that, Gilbert’s face turned impossibly red, and Roderich was actually concerned that he was going to send his little brother flying. To his relief, the only punishment Ludwig received was a flick on his forehead. “Shut up! We’re going, okay? Roderich- do you want to give me your number and I can shoot you a message or something? I gotta get this kid to his movie before he makes me gut punch him across the- oh no, Lud, you know I wouldn’t do that, I’m just joking!” Gilbert quickly backtracked upon seeing Ludwig’s expression. “Come on. Hey, I’ll catch you on the way out, alright?” he asked Roderich. “Actually I’m off in about thirty minutes. And I’ve got some other customers behind you- and some stuff to clean before they let me go.”“O- oh. Okay. I guess we can figure out another time.” Gilbert took the tickets and allowed himself to be pulled along towards the concessions at last. What exactly just happened? Did Roderich want to date him? Why would he brush him off if he did? As he wondered, he and Ludwig ordered some popcorn and a soda, and went to give their tickets to the collector. It wasn’t until he got the stubs that he noticed writing scribbled on the back. 876-5309. Call me.

Tl;dr at the bottom, this is long sorry ^^;
Straight up fuck my old store manager (and a few other coworkers). I used to work for the Orange Home Improvement store. I’ve submitted plenty of posts before now about this horrible store (apparently it was just my particular store and store manager…) anyway, let me step back. I had decided to take a break from college to try and get myself a good, stable job. In the mean time, I needed a job that would pay for my needs and wants, so I applied to a bunch of places and got hired on the spot at this home improvement place. I thought it was going to be fantastic, and it was! By the end of the first month, I had decided that I REALLY liked it there and genuinely would not mind STAYING there for a long time. Sure I had bad customers, especially since I worked the customer service desk, but my supervisor and most of the managers always backed me the fuck up so it was nbd.
Flash forward another month and I was discussing my life plans with another coworker. One of those plans involved me purchasing a car within the year and a house within the next 4 years. There’s no reason for that to not be a possibility for me, but because I’m young, baby-boomers have made it a point to try and shoot me down strictly because of my age and pretend like they know how much money I have in savings and like they know what my credit score is. My baby-boomer store manager, who I had worked around and seen for a collective 10 minutes (not even that long) in the 2 months I had worked there, eavesdropped on the conversation and told me that wasn’t possible to do. I know she said this because, at the time, I was only 20 years old and that was reason enough for her to believe I wouldn’t manage to be successful. I ignored her and kept talking to my coworker. SM decided to join us at our table and join in the convo. She kept saying things to passive aggressively turn me down (comparing me to her failures basically), yadda-yadda. Basically being a straight up bitch for no reason.
Flash forward one more month (3 months working there now) and I get a customer complaint. I think this was my first one, actually. Keep in mind I have 100’s across the board and have kept 100’s since my first day regarding my customer service scores. I think I had like one 99, but that was it. If I was a cashier, I would have wiped the floor with the other cashiers and been cashier of the month every month. A contractor came in on a Saturday (this was before the company decided to keep the contractor desk open on the weekends) and they wanted an install on their account to be edited. They were already pissed because the contractor desk was closed and they were “running late” like these types of customers always tend to be. I politely informed them that the contractor desk is always closed on weekends, always has been, and that I had never been trained on how to edit installs. Our store system is fairly complicated, so it would be hard for me to make guesses without risking screwing something up so I told them I’d call a manager up. I called the only manager on duty, but he was busy. I told the contractor that and said I’d take a look to see if this particular thing happened to be straight forward because some of these process were straight forward, others were as complicated as they could get. Anyway, they could see my computer screen, so they could see what I was doing and that I was trying to fix this for them. After about 5 minutes, I called the manager back. He had run into a bigger problem and would be even longer now. I told the contractor and said “Let me see if I can get a hold of someone from that department, maybe they know how to edit installs” to at least try and dump these assholes on someone else. I called that department several times and paged several times and received no answer. I also called the head cashier to see if she had any idea how to do this (she didn’t). I apologized, said the manager was extremely busy but he’d be up here a.s.a.p., and said “Let me take another look at your order to see if I missed something”. I kept my cool on the outside. Anyway, you know how this ends. I tried my damndest to help, but it wasn’t enough because they were “in a hurry” and don’t know how to manage their time and that’s obviously my fault too. It’s also my fault that it took the manager 15 minutes to get to us. When they complained to corporate they even lied and said I just stood there and did nothing. Another customer a few days later decided that me standing at the counter late at night after finishing all my closing duties just prior to the store closing was me “Being bored and not wanting my job”, so THEY complained too, saying “I just don’t feel like she wants her job” like ????? Fuck off???? Store manager pulled me in her office and put me on final warning over those two things. I received no warning beforehand, I was basically put on the chopping block. All that would have needed to happen to get me fired was an old lady coming in and complaining about me not selling her a cookie even though we are a hardware store and don’t sell cookies. Part of her decision to put me on final warning was also because “Every time I’ve worked with you, you just seem off or upset or like you don’t enjoy your job”. Every time she worked with me, which was a whopping total of about 15 minutes in a 3 month period, I basically just acted casual. I’m an unfortunate sufferer of R.B.F., so I guess that’s my bad for assuming my manager would know that I’m a-okay and just dropping my fake af customer service persona and know that I’m not actually pissed off or bored or upset or whatever someone feels like reading my relaxed expression as that day, that’s just what my face looks like when I’m relaxed. One of those times she was with me, I was suffering from side effects from my medication and was feeling VERY nauseous and I had told her what was going on, but whatever. I’m supposed to be a robot, incapable of needing medicine or getting sick, so that’s my fault.
Another thing that got to me was one day when it was SUPER hot and humid outside, the HR manager asked the front end people (she asked all of us, but it ended up being only me doing all the work) to get some big displays ready for a set up. I’m talking like, big pieces of lumber, heavy sheets of plywood, all moved, painted, and generally set up. This all fell on me because tbh our one cashier that day was kind of prissy, but that’s fine. If construction isn’t your thing, that’s fine. Keep your nails and makeup pretty, I’ll do the dirty work. Just hand me something I need every now and then when I ask (and she did, she was one of my favorite coworkers). I love construction type work and I’m very good at it (minus the heavy lifting, I’m 5’4” and 120 pounds, there’s only so much weight I can lift). So on top of being on the side of the store with the only non-functioning a/c unit, it being over 100 farenheit outside, and the humidity being ridiculous because it’s Tennessee, I had to do all of this work. It didn’t help that our box fans had been taken away by the store manager, I guess because some customer complained. Needless to say I didn’t smell like flowers after I was done. HR manager decided to pull me into her office about 2 hours later and said “People are complaining about your…how do I put this gently…smell…” like no shit bitch, I know I smell bad, you don’t have to fucking sugar coat it. This is a home improvement store during a Tennessee summer, the contractors alone are enough to make you want to break your nose so it won’t smell anymore, but I get it because they are out working and they don’t have much of an option, short of getting in trouble and not getting paid. She just kinda put this dumb face on when I responded with “Well, I was the only person working on that display that we’re trying to set up and you do know that the a/c unit over that part of the store does not work. It’s also really hot outside and our box fans are missing (can’t accuse the managers of taking our fans even though we know that’s what happened, that’s a no no). There’s only so much my deodorant and perfume can do, I’m really sorry. But I got the display done for you!” Like, tell it to someone who cares. Either do this shit yourself or leave me alone when I break a sweat because our new cashier doesn’t want to break her nails or get a splinter and you haven’t gotten someone out to fix the a/c yet. (We got our fans back the next day btw.)
Needless to say, I fucking hated this place at this point in time. I loved most of the coworkers and would have loved staying, but I would not be able to survive or manage with such a shitty store manager and, hell I don’t even have a word for the HR manager. She’s just majored in idiocy I guess. I started applying everywhere I could and, 2 months later, landed a job working for my state government (which is where I still work over a year later and I LOVE it so much). I noped the hell out of the hardware store, gave them a notice, left in good terms, etc (the HR manager tried to guilt me into staying, but I straight up shot her down. I had been trying to change departments since I got put on final warning and I coincidentally did not receive a legitimate offer to swap until I turned in my 2 weeks notice ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )
Anyway, it’s been barely over a year since I left that hell-hole and not only do I love my job and have a really nice, new car now, but I’m buying a house at the age of 21. We close on January 10th (for those unfamiliar with housing terms, Closing means that we sign the final paperwork, pay our realtors, and I get the keys to my house and I get to move in the next day). It’s not even like I had to get a hovel of a house. Im going into this purchase with $30k in equity (this house was appraised $30k higher than what I’m paying), this house is younger than me, has 3 bed rooms and 2 full baths, is in a SUPER nice neighborhood, is within walking distance to so much stuff, and the worst thing about it is that it’s a little bit of a commute and it’s just a bit outdated on the inside, so I will definitely have to do some renovations. Guess who has a new, super fuel efficient car and loves construction work, though :)
Fun little tid-bit, the store manager and HR manager both fill in as paint mixers when the other guys aren’t there and they aren’t there a lot. I’m 100% planning on being a petty asshole and going out of my way to that store just so they can mix my paint for me. I’ve got nothing against the store, they still get my business for sure. I just want to be a bitch and let the store and HR managers know just how much better off I am now, to the point that I’m willing to go out of my way to go to this particular store. I’ve already talked up and down about how nice my new car is (I went from a ’99 chevy tahoe to a 2014 chevy spark, so it was a pretty awesome change for me. My car is actually me-sized now)
TL;DR : I took a break from college to get a good job, landed one at the orange home improvement place, ended up loving it and wanting to stay there. The store manager eavesdropped on my convo with a coworker and told me that my plans to buy a new car within the year and a house within 4 years were horse shit (most likely only on the basis that I am young), treated me like shit while I worked there, tried to fire me because of some REALLY horse shit reasons (typical customer hearsay vs my word) despite the fact that I was the best performing front end person, even better than the head cashiers. The HR manager didn’t make it any better, so I got a new job that I still currently love and work at over a year later and now I have a really nice, new car and I’m about to close on a really nice house…All within a 2 year span. Now I’m going to be a petty jerk and make those two mix the paint for my walls and listen to me relentlessly talk about how excited I am to own my own house and renovate my own place because I’m still pissed.
