They're scratching away in the book, quill pen jittering excitedly, a gleeful dance in the candle and starlight. It would honestly be endearing, maybe even cozy, if it weren't for how dissonant from the writ the motion was. Or, well, should be. That's the reason why the second one is here, actually, standing with their arms crossed in annoyance, watching. Watching. Watching as the first kicks their feet in the air like a smitten school child and hums a pleasant tune and writes. Scratching words, scratching secrets, scratching--
Oh, to heck with it anyway.
The second one clears their throat, loudly and obnoxiously. The first startles, then looks over their shoulder. Even with their face obscured by the hood, the beaming joy is so palpable it puts an extra sparkle in the stars.
"Oh! Hello! Come to join me?"
The second one scowls.
"There's some good suggestions from the Watchers today," the first one hums, resuming their kicking and writing. "Very clever those watchers, and so many of them! Quite the devious bunch."
"Right, very devious."
"And creative," the first one adds, beaming again, "I can't wait to see with those little beings on the server will do with some of these. Especially with the two red ones now!"
"Yeah, about that," the second one mutters. "I-- you know, I did have a question."
"Fire away!"
"I just wanted to make sure we were, you know, playing the same game?"
"Of course we're playing the same game!" The first one chuckles. "I love the secrets you've written, by the way."
"Yeah, see, that's just it," the second one says, crossing their arms. "You know I'm fine with you reading my books -- spelling errors and all that -- but, it feels like, and correct me if I'm wrong, but it feels like you're not playing the same game I am."
"Oh?"
"Yeah so, the secrets, this is a Life series yeah? It's supposed to be a little bloody, a little cruel?"
"Oh it is! It is! Did you see the one Impulse got? No killing allowed! On a server with so many mobs, that's terrifying!"
"Right, no, I get that. But. The one you gave Pearl."
"The butler?"
"Yeah, that one. You don't think it... Undermines the no killing thing, giving Impulse one of the strongest fighters on the server as his butler?"
There is a noticeable pause where the first one's quill stops scratching. When the silence stretches so long it almost gets awkward, they finally say, "Nnnnnnnnnooooo. N... Nooo. No. Definitely not."
"Definitely not?"
"Definitely not."
"Alright. How about uhm, how about giving BDubs the task to kill the ender dragon?"
"That was plenty evil! Hard task that."
"Right, and you let Impulse, the one who can't kill anything, go with him to help complete that task, right?" There is another noticeable silence from the first one, so the second one continues. "You don't think setting up a guy who MUST kill something with a guy who CAN'T kill something might, you know, help the Must guy reach his goal at all?"
The first one clears their throat uncomfortably.
"Yeah, I really don't think we're playing the same game."

fresh new watcher/listener headcanon: they do better when the opposite sense is completely taken out of the picture
like u give a watcher noise-cancelling headphones and suddenly they gain a +14 to perception, they see Every Detail and can see up to like a billion miles away from where they're standing, everything that makes up everything down to the molecule if they squint, in a fight they're so good at tracking how their opponent swings and makes the smallest, most minute of eye movements that it basically looks like they're predicting their opponent's movements just from analysing what they're already doing down to an insane degree. all you gotta do to make a listener unable to hear you is, well, not talk. that aint gonna work here. you're communicating through body language and overly-expressive looks? the watchers read it like its (very literally) its own language. reading lips is a breeze. passing notes in the back of the class ain't gonna work here.
on the other hand, give a listener a blindfold and they become acutely aware of the Exact BPM of Everyone Within A Billion Mile Radius. watchers, when they are not using their ability to literally see everything everywhere all at once, can be hidden from. you plant yourself behind a big enough tree and you're damn near invisible. hiding from a listener in this state is impossible. both literally and figuratively- give a listener a blindfold and make 'em interrogate someone, they're able to hear every vocal inflection, every hesitation, every cutoff, and will probably instantly know whether youre lying or not. their fighting style becomes completely reactive- with a fast enough reaction time (and lets be real theyre mildly immortal pseudo-gods, their reaction time is fast enough) they can hear the sound of an arrow cutting through the air and dodge it without even looking. they can catch blades on their own weapons and are the master of side-stepping out of the way when someone tries to stab them from behind like the cool kids they are
i feel like if you pitted them in a fight against each other, they'd be insufferable to one another but absolutely enthralling to watch from the outside. i'd like to think that watchers are very formal, since they have that whole lawful evil type nonsense going on, so the way they fight is very by-the-books, won't break rules, fights like they're being scored type beat. on the other hand, listeners are, again, purely reactive. they are impulse-driven chaos mongerers, and thus they fight dirty. below the belt? low-hanging fruit? sounds good to them. they'd go for an easy shot in the Nether region, if you know what i mean (jimmy and grian are exceptions; they purposely act the opposite of what they're meant to because they're sort of just Like That tbh)
but yeah, they'd be SO annoying to one another. the watcher keeps having to parry the listener's bs blows (which annoys the listener to no end because the POINT of those shots is that you DON'T SEE THEM COMING!!), keeps trying to land hits but is evaded at the exact last second, probably on purpose just to make the watcher mad. like, the listener hears the sword coming at them from a mile away but doesn't dodge until the last possible moment just so the watcher can see how small a distance they missed by. but then the listener tries to make shots of their own and they're blocked halfway through the swing. the listener barely even comes close to hitting them because the watcher is predicting the damn future or something stupid like that, making it impossible for them to do anything unless they move like an absolute maniac so the watcher can't predict them. similarly, the only way the watcher can land anything is by exclusively using fake-outs, which just feels wrong.
honestly, i'm imagining a spar between martyn and pearl like this. they're so silly i think they would lightheartedly get on each other's nerves in this way until the fight is abruptly ended by pearl kicking martyn in the nether because yes, she fights by the rules, and it was a spar with no rules so. hey. fair game.

I was thinking earlier that I really wished that there were more fanart of the speakers and it's such a shame that almost no one has expanded on them (I know they aren't canon but I can believe)
but then it hit me I can draw why not do it myself?

YALL-
None of the tasks in session 7 were viewer submitted
I’m not saying it was scripted- we know it’s at least a little scripted in terms of the tasks, but that dosent take away from the plot and lore being good
But just consider with me the lore implications, none of it was viewer submitted, so that begs the question of where the tasks came from- wether it was the Watchers, which solidly identified the Watchers as a different entity than the audience, or possibly the Listeners. I think it’s more likely the Watchers, they got tired of waiting for the carnage to start, of the peace and friendship, that’s not what their here for, that’s not what the feed on- but they don’t understand, they don’t seem to realize that good things come to those who wait, if they let the alliances build it would be even more satisfying to tear them down, to watch it all crumble. No team wins the game, we’ve known that since Third life, it was the first truth taught and it has only ever been reinforced over the seasons.

Now I'm thinking about jimmy being connected to listeners, and I'm just...
Imagine if the Listeners feel a little bit guilty. Like yes watchers didn't like Jimmy before it all, but it was the fact that Listener interacted, made jimmy work with them that put the target on his back for watchers. Jimmy was more trouble then watchers would have liked. So they cursed him. He will always die first. A call for everyone that it's their time. Everyone's going to die.
So listeners decided they would do everything in their power to break the curse. How would they do that? They would ofc send Martyn for a lottle rescue mission...
But he failed.
Every single time Martyn failed or refused to save Jimmy.
So, the listener decided to put him in a continuous time loop until Martyn saves Jimmy from dying first 😇

jimmy: "who's this little fella?"
martyn: "... i think that's my memory."
[hesitant laughter]
martyn: "oh dear, there goes my memory, floating away again into the abyss."
jimmy: "and then he floated away"
martyn: "i remember a time when i was playing third life and-”
jimmy (interrupting): "nah- no"
martyn: "ehm, look at me now..."
jimmy: "stop this! stop talking about third life!"

Man, now all I picture is Watchers, Listeners and Speakers getting into a good old wrestling match.
Bonus funny points if Scott just sees Speakers getting beat up but can't see the other two so he's just like "huh?" Though I imagine the Speakers confuse him a lot already.

Ok so I know traffic SMP isn’t actually that lore heavy outside of Martyns stuff but I find it insanely interesting that both servers where watchers/listeners were involved (Evo and the Life series) feature Jimmy being incredibly unlucky. It’s like these Erdrich beings personally have it out for him and I’m here for it.

I know Martyn's lore makes the Life series extra edgy for all the participants but I kinda like the idea that the watchers are really only messing with him. Like everyone else signs up for the games. They leave their main worlds (Hermitcraft, Empires, etc.) for a bit of silly fun and then know they will return back home after. Martyn doesn't know that everyone else just signs up for the games he thinks everyone else is thrown into them like he is. He doesn't realize that the watchers only pluck him up and throw him into the games. They do feed off the general energy of the games but really they are just there for Martyn's despair and the joy of knowing he thinks everyone is suffering alongside him but in reality it is only him. In the end everyone else goes back to their worlds but Martyn is just back in the data stream powerless to prevent the watchers from pulling him back into another death match.
