In This Scene

This takes place in the Swashbucklers of the Magic Kingdom universe:

Simba and his eldest son, Kopa, just enjoyed a very fun and very adventurous day together, but Simba may or may not have gotten Nala’s approval to take Kopa to that specific place. And when he’s gone somewhere without permission, there’s only one thing to do—lie like a fur carpet. Of course, Nala grew up using the “oldest trick in the book” right along side him, so…

Is Simba that much of a goofball himbo that he’s convinced the old “watering hole” line will work? Or is he trying to tell Nala exactly what he did in a way that won’t get her mad? You decide.

Behind the Scenes

I don’t draw straight fanart of many characters, and it was kind of fun to give Chris and André a break from carrying the scene—they do tend to be scene-stealers in my art. Plus, Simba is my favorite Disney character and I wanted to draw him.

By the way, whenever I draw in pencil on a physical sheet of paper, that’s because I drew that piece at night as I was falling asleep. For personal reasons, I keep my iPad—which I use for digital art—in another room when I go to bed, but I always keep a sketchbook on my nightstand in case I want something to do to wind down.

Keeping my devices separate has definitely helped my ability to fall asleep quickly and get better quality sleep, so 10/10 recommend.

Despite how much I draw it, I actually don't dabble much in Lion King fandom. I do know there's some common popular tropes for Kopa but that's about it.

Personally, I like to make him an orphaned cheetah that Simba adopts (like how Timon & Pumbaa adopted him). Fixes a lot of issues that seem to crop up (inheritance, what happened to him, etc) imho. Also serves as a nice foundation for a lot more stuff than I initially thought.

But Kopa couldn't respond. Despite his bloodied, bared teeth and agressive expression, the prince was terrified. The pain on his back and shoulder and the loss of energy from trying to escape the adult lioness's claws was nothing compared to the hatred in her eyes, piercing directly into his. Ever since his own adventures with Asante and the vultures, he's always done his best to show bravery in the face of danger.

But knowing the level of ruthlessness he was facing... he knew it wouldn't amount to anything, as the water behind him began to splash against his paws.

Hey there!! This is, technically speaking, a drawing I was planning to post for my birthday tomorrow, but since that's not going to be possible in the end, I decided to share it today instead!

In my universe, Kopa was ''killed'' by Zira - however, she didn't maul him and leave him for dead or anything like that. Instead, Zira ''befriended'' Kopa before trying to kill him while they were alone, with Kopa eventually defending himself and giving Zira her trademark ear notch. The lion cub was surprisingly elusive for her, so she could only scratch him a few times before finally pushing him into a corner. Unluckily for her she wouldn't be able to kill him in time, as soon Kopa would fall into the rapids behind him. Leaving him for drowned, Zira would feel satisfied by the outcome and walk away, with Simba later on discovering what ''happened''. This is foreshadowing for Zira's eventual demise in TLK2, where she also falls into the river and drowns (though truly dying in the process, unlike Kopa).

Irl, I have astraphobia (fear of thunder), which is part of the reason why I wanted to draw something related to thunder. I headcanon Kopa also gets a fear of thunder because of this event (and also a fear of Zira herself).

I plan to draw more of this AU sometime soon, so stay tuned :D
