Lost by Simon Beckett

I have always enjoyed Simon Becket books as had previously read the David Hunter series.  I haven’t read one for a long time so when I saw this in the large print I was looking forward to reading it.  However I was disappointed.  It is nothing like the David Hunter type books for enjoyment.  I was getting irritated by the supposed policeman Jonah who was so slipshod.  Not checking ID of a woman who he finds in his hospital room & just assuming she was a physio (she was a journalist) plus other blunders a good cop wouldn’t make.  But he is a firearms officer not a so maybe that makes a difference?

London, present day.  Jonah Colley receives a phone call from Gavin, someone he knew 10 yrs ago & hasn’t spoken to since.  Gavin wants to meet Jonah at a disused warehouse & says Jonah is the only one he can trust.  When Jonah gets to the warehouse Gavin doesn’t show himself or answer when Jonah calls.  Jonah searches around in the dark warehouse and discovers 3 dead bodies wrapped in cellophane one which is Gavin & 1 dying.  Someone stalks him from behind & after a fight Jonah ends up in hospital.

10 years ago Jonah was with his 4yr old son at the park, Jonah fell asleep for a few seconds & when he woke his son was gone.  The only person nearby was a down & out called Owen Stokes and a woman with a buggy/pram.  The police cleared Stokes of any involvement & his sons death was labelled accidental as a shoe was found in a water/sewage pipe nearby.  The body was never found.  He has been living with this agony & heartbreak ever since.

Present day again & Jonah discovers the man who he fought with in the warehouse was Owen Stokes.  He also finds out that his ex friend Gavin was involved with Stokes somehow & may have been taking bribes.  He also believes that Stokes may have had something to do with his sons disappearance after all.  Jonah starts to investigate Gavins past & his family.  Another dead body turns up, places are being ransacked & Jonah is framed for murder & Stokes’s name keeps cropping up.

Jonahs actions were all so predictable but I kept slowly reading it until the end.  I was in the minority of reviews for this book as I didn’t care what happened to Jonah the blundering cop although there is a surprising but somewhat unbelievable twist at the end.  If this is the beginning of a series I won’t bother with the rest….  However, having just finished it, I must now point out that the last 40+ pages were better…

Bingeing, microdosed: Shrill (developed by Aidy Bryant, Alexandra Rushfield, Lindy West, 2019-2021)

It's a fun, well-observed, and greatly cast series, anchored by Aidy Bryant, with the fantastically bingeable second season, and slightly less smooth two other seasons. Harrison and Adefope are absolute highlights. Too bad it got cancelled.

“Lewis.”

Darcy Lewis opened a huge smile and gave Commander Rumlow a cheeky salute. “Yes, sir?”

Brock grinned at her. At first, he’d tried to keep some semblance of professionalism around her, but it proved impossible. “There are rumors about us.” He wanted to address those before they had a problem with HR. Lindy from HR really scared him.

“I know.” Darcy made a dismissive gesture with her hand. “I spread them.”

Brock had worked with Darcy for over a year now. And yet, he had not expected this answer. “You… What?”

“It was a behavioral experiment.” She told him, as if that solved and explained everything.

He arched an eyebrow at her. “A behavioral experiment?”

She had the decency to look a bit embarrassed. “Well, to be quite honest, it was more to flush out the gossips amongst us. So I crafted some pieces of news, and let them out in the world.”

“And that way, you figured out who was spreading those rumors.” He concluded.

“Exactly.” She was clearly proud of herself.

“Smart.” He conceded, somewhat impressed by her. “But… Why me?”

“You’re the Commander. Everyone is afraid of you, so I figured that whoever had enough balls to go around spreading rumors about you, would be a piece of work. And boy, was I right.” She stage-whispered to him, like they were sharing a private joke.

Most of the time, Brock didn’t know if he wanted to throttle her or… “So I was just a convenient target?”

“Pretty much.” She admitted shamelessly.

He just chuckled. “Only you, Lewis…”

Her grin was confident, and completely unrepentant. “What did you think about the rumors?”

He snorted. “I was confused when people started asking me about your cat, and how I was supposed to be pet-sitting for you.”

She nodded. “That was step one.”

“The one about you calling my biceps Clyde and Owen was also… Interesting.”

She clapped. “Oh, I really like that one.”

"Which one is Clyde?” He wanted to know.

“This one, obviously.” She said, pointing at his right biceps.

“Obviously.” He rolled his eyes. “And the one about me eating maraschino cherries out of your belly?”

Now she frowned. “What?”

“You heard me.”

Darcy hummed, looking pensive. “That’s an interesting side effect. I didn’t come up with that one.” She clarified when he looked confused.

“No?” Brock sighed dramatically. “Pity, it’s my favorite one.”

Darcy’s eyebrows show up. “Oh. Yeah?”

Brock’s smirk was slow and really naughty. “Oh yeah. I really like maraschino cherries.”

A Whisper of Sorrows by JD Kirk

Another riveting read from JD Kirk with the likeable police team headed up by the Great character DCI Jack Logan.

As it was left in the previous book in the series Owen Petrie has returned to haunt Jack.  After spending nearly 10 yrs incarcerated in a secured mental facility he has escaped after killing 2 staff.  Jack had warned the powers that be that Petrie wasn't a cabbage he was pretending & now he was proved right.  But Petrie had to have had help from within.

When the mutilated body of Petries doctor is found strategically placed by Petrie, it is established he was the one who helped him escape & had been feeding him information.

Jacks flat is broken into by Petrie, he leaves a warning card so Jack moves his family closer so he can protect them. But he can't, he has brought them closer to danger knowlingly.  Petrie begins to target families of people close to him & eventually Jacks family.

Connected to all this somewhere is Boscoe the Russian drug dealer & adversary of Jacks.  Jack is holding some info back & putting his team at risk by going a bit gung ho (slightly annoying).  He is trying to draw out Petrie but Petrie is second guessing him.  Someone in the department is leaking info. 

This is a real crime thriller and page turner.  Enjoy how all the team, Ben, Tyler, Sinead & Hamza are coming together and building a bond.  I recommend this Scottish noir series. Now for the next one.....
