Fandom Trumps Hate 2023

I'm participating in Fandom Trumps Hate (@fandomtrumpshate) this year, and like I should probably promote it so y'all are getting a too wordy post on the topic and I apologise for that.

What is FTH?

FTH is a cross-fandom charity auction that has been running since 2016, focused on supporting small-scale non-profits on a series of progressive issues in the US. Why the US? Because the auction began as a direct response to the results of the 2016 elections there. This year's supported organisations cover a variety of issues.

How does it work?

This is not a commission. The FTH tumblr goes into this more in-depth, but in essence: creators such as myself decide which organisations they would like to support, and bidders bid the amount they are willing to donate. The highest bidder at closing donates to one of the chosen causes, then receives a thank you gift for their donation, tailored to their preferences.

Important dates and details?

Auctions are currently open for browsing! This will give you an opportunity to see what fanworks are on offer before bidding opens. The easiest way to do this is by browsing the tagsets for fandoms that interest you.

Bidding opens March 1st (08:00 EST) and closes March 5th (20:00 EST). Proof of donations are due March 12th.

Nah, participating in a fandom auction is one of those things I've said I'd like to do once and never actually managed, and I got sweet talked into it this year.

What are you offering?

Ohhh, this is the fun question, isn't it? I've officially offered a story of up to 5K words in one of three fandoms, but if you are interested in a fandom I've not offered but previously written for that may be negotiable. As for length, I have found that fics will be precisely as long as they want to be--I'd much rather say up to 5K and write 10K than say 5-10K and write 3K.

Examples of my work Game of Thrones and Wheel of Time fic can be found here and my Miss Fisher fic here, but in general my work leans towards character-driven and bittersweet fics, competence kink, and the mortifying ordeal of being known. (Are the cool kids still saying that? Probably not.) My smut leans into soft horny even when kinky, which tends to be either very much someone's tastes or very much not. 10. okay so story time, around the age of 15/16 is when I started to realize I was into kinky stuff. The preference had kinda always been there, but I couldn’t really place a name to it. I had always felt like an outcast among my peers when it came to the way they would talk about romantic and sexual relationships (I was a year ahead, so all my friends were 1-2 years older than me, so they started to do that stuff earlier than I did) because the things they talked about and liked were way different from the stuff I would think/fantasize about, so I always stayed quiet (teenage girls are very vocal about having choking/daddy kinks but that’s definitely indicative of a much larger problem that i will not get into bc that’s a whole other very very long essay that I will definitely write on here one day but not now). So when I found out what gentle femdom was I felt like I had a community that understood me, and everything just clicked. I would lurk on online communities and I lived for the discourse on there but I could never actively participate because every community had a strict “no minors” policy. They would say exactly what you said, “If minors wish to learn, then they should do so by finding articles and books, not by asking people involved in the scene.” I didn’t want to make anyone catch a case and I didn’t want to get targeted by predators so I tried to follow their advice. i found nothing. There honestly just isn’t that much educational stuff for “kinky teenagers”, or at least none that fit me. There was no femdom oriented stuff. I mean sure there was the standard “consent is important especially in bdsm relationships” but like that didn’t really help me. I had so many questions, that I could never feel comfortable asking my mom or a therapist, and especially not my friends. I didn’t know how to express this part of myself. I couldn’t talk to anyone about it and I couldn’t even watch porn like a normal teenager (we all know the state of femdom porn. its bad) so I was this ball incredible frustration and confusion and i didn’t know what to do with it. So I unfortunately turned to twitter. There I made a little like minded friend. he was also 16 so i thought “this is good, a non adult also kinky teenager who I can relate too. what could go wrong :)”(I’m sure you see where this is going) I was so excited to have a new friend, but ofc, our convos soon took a turn. However, since he was the first person to ever show interest in me, and the only person my age who i could talk to who understood me, i started to catch feelings. But he was a teen just like me, just as horny and confused and sooo immature. He started to pressure me into domming him/becoming his domme, but I refused because I wasn’t ready (i saw on one of those online communities I used to lurk in that its not healthy for your first sexual experience to be bdsm and I took that to heart). he ghosted me. needless to say that “friendship” was toxic. i realized too late that he only saw me as a kink dispenser, and didn’t care about me on a personal level. it also made me realize how not “mature for my age” I was. i say all this to say, NO, teenagers should not be participating in kink. they are not mature enough. however education and resources for them are not where they should be. if we want to discourage them from putting themselves in these situations, we need to better provide them with education and healthy ways to relieve these urges/feelings (i eventually took up writing, it helped me a lot). i feel like had i found a healthier and safer way to express/explore that side of myself, I would’ve never gotten in that situation to begin with. That experience has kinda put me off from dipping my toe into the actual community (well that and the lack of diversity but we’ve already talked about that)

ALSO the amount of very young children i’ve seen in the kink “community” on twitter is alarming... you’re not a little you’re 12

Professor Marston and the Wonder Women - Non-Spoilery Review

I think the fact that I don't want to go to bed until I talk about this movie somewhere says a lot in and of itself! I'm going to talk about my feelings and reactions to the movie here but won't be mentioning any plot points or spoilers. (Even though I should make another post for that, because there are certainly Some Things I would like to discuss in a lot more detail!) As the Internet at large is aware, I have been super hype for this movie since I heard about it. The story of the Marstons had been making the rounds on Tumblr for a few years, so I was a little familiar with the story through that. I'm also a queer, kinky, poly person and I think I speak for everyone when I say we are HELLA THIRSTY for rep. In the true spirit of thirst, I watched every trailer (many times. DAILY), read a shit ton of reviews, watched/read interviews with the director & cast, etc., and even got The Secret History of Wonder Woman (book by Jill Lepore) from the library on Saturday and was a third of the way through it by the time I saw the movie. I basically did everything possible to overhype this movie for myself. So the question is, did I?

Yes and no. The trailers do show the majority of the erotic scenes (though not all) and I knew a ton about the characters and plot going in. The reviews I read were also really accurate, I agree with their take on the movie's strengths and weaknesses. So in that sense, yes, it was what I expected. THAT SAID. This movie is still so flippin' good that I enjoyed every second and I wish it had been 500 hours long. My one real criticism is that it feels pretty rushed. A ton of ground is covered and I wanted more of every step of the way - having read the book I also know that there is a LOT more to these people's histories, though I know the movie had to condense things. Even with all my foreknowledge, there were things that surprised me, which is awesome. Not gonna go over the details of all of that, because I really want other people to be as pleasantly surprised as I was, but I will say that there was A TON more going on between Olive and Elizabeth than I had expected, which was wonderful. Y'all, THIS MOVIE IS GAY. HELLA FUCKING GAY. I kept wanting to yell "THAT'S SO GAY" to Olive when I was watching it. XD I can't tell you how rich and emotional the wlw content here is -- you should see it for yourself. If you have ANY concern about this movie being about a dude exploiting women, or the male gaze, let me tell you that you have absolutely NOTHING to worry about. (Thank you, Angela Robinson!!) In fact, Marston occasionally even feels like a prop to Olive & Elizabeth's story/relationship, IMO. I know some of this is probably my own bias, as a gay with a thing for older, dominant women, lol. But yeah, this movie brought up a lot of familiar emotions and longings and memories for me, and Olive -- I feel ya, girl. Oh I feel ya. But seriously though, it makes sense that everyone -- audience included -- is in love with Elizabeth in this movie, because Rebecca Hall fucking owns this. A lot of reviews mentioned that she was the stand-out, and I completely agree. She is SO compelling every moment she is onscreen (which is most of them, thankfully), and portrays a complex character with ease, in a performance that feels so genuine and completely present. Rebecca made me laugh out loud and cry actual tears and everything in between. Damn, she's good. Gotta give a shout-out to Bella Heathcote as well, though, because she really surprised me and I don't feel like the trailers do her justice. She brings a lot of the emotion to the movie, and she had all of us right there with her. I swear everyone in our theater was crying by the end of it. That's what really struck me the most -- the scenes with power dynamics and sex are great, as hot as you think they're gonna be, but what was totally unexpected for me was how moving and emotional this movie was. That's the feeling I was left with at the end -- real love and romance. I was not prepared to feel so touched and choked up. I think the movie does what it set out to do, which was to focus on the emotions between these three people, and not just the perceived deviance of their relationship. I can't wait to watch Olive and Elizabeth look at each other some more when I go again on Saturday! <3

The Good Place

(Eleanor/Tahani, Eleanor/Janet, Jason/Janet)

I love this show’s humor, and I especially loved the season finale. I adore the concept that these characters are being used to torture each other for eternity, and that they may go through an endless series of Groundhog Day loops at a demon’s whim. Definitely feel free to set your work in the Season 1 loop or in a future loop of “The Good Place.”

Eleanor’s latent bisexuality is a big draw for me, and I’d love to see her explore it with Tahani or Janet. I can see her sleeping with either of them on a whim and then eventually coming to regret the repercussions.

Jason and Janet are just hilarious and I really want to see them incompetently exploring sexuality together.

Artificial Intelligence Sex: I love how inhuman Janet is, despite her appearance. What is it like for her to have sex? I’d love to see something from her POV, with an emphasis on the AI weirdness. Does she have to look up sex and anatomy in her databases?

Banter as Foreplay / Banter While in Bed: This show is hilarious. Go ahead and take that humor into your fanwork. All of these characters would crack jokes and argue and say silly things before and during sex.

Body admiration: Eleanor is so, so hot for Tahani’s rockin’ bod.

First time with a woman: For Eleanor and Tahani.

First Time / Loss of Virginity: For Janet. She clearly doesn’t know the first thing about human sexuality, and Eleanor and Jason are not the best guides. Does she ever figure it out?

Sex Magic: It’s the Good(/Bad) Place! Anything is possible, especially with Janet around. Bring on the flying dildos.

Shame in Sexual Desires / Unexpected Arousal: This has to do with the Bad Place aspect. I like the idea of these characters having sex even though they know they might fork everything up because of it.

To be clear, I ship Peter with both Bev and Nightingale, so I’m totally open to polyamory if you want to include both ships. I read Nightingale as 100% gay, though, so I would see this as V-shaped polyamory rather than a triad.

Affirmative Consent Play: So much of the sexuality in this series is colored by the fact that there are so many magical forms of glamor and compulsion – not to mention that Nightingale is Peter’s boss.
