I guess this time-lapse is about as close as we're going to get to an animated OP for Slightly Damned with my skills and budget. Still, I did my best to make it look cool!

My choices for a time-lapse from Clip Studio Paint were either 60 seconds or 60 minutes... so I decided to use a little elbow grease and basic video editing to make something that was a bit more satisfying.

Now that I’ve finished it, I have some Thoughts on AI: The Somnium Files - nirvanA Initiative. Spoilers beneath the cut. Just be aware that these will be slightly disjointed as I come up with them.

One of the big things I noticed was just how inclusive it was. You have two characters with visible disabilities, and another character with a hidden disability. Despite that, those characters are treated well by the narrative. While those disabilities do impact them, it doesn’t stop them from having fulfilling lives. Also, Hitomi’s arm not moving in the grand finale was good. On a similar note, it’s nice that there’s a non-binary character.

However, on the note of characters with disabilities... I don’t especially like Lien. The whole ‘love at first sight’ has never been something that appealed, and then he basically stalked Kizuna into giving him a chance. So, not a fan.

It also seemed odd to me just how many of the new characters had links to Date, despite their involvement only really coming down to chance.

Tearer, as a villain, just wasn’t great. It felt more like he was plot device to drive the story forward rather than having any actual presence. I also don’t really understand what the whole Dahlia Boats thing was about (but that might be memory playing tricks on me).

As for the story itself, I do want to talk about the two central conceits a bit.

The main one with the zig-zagging time-frame only really works with the understanding of the player as Frayer. All things considered though, it was a beautiful revelation of WTF combined with piecing together all the things that suddenly made sense. It was well executed, but there were some casualties along the way. (I’ll get to that later)

The other one is the whole simulation theory aspect. So I’ll take a brief diversion here. My project for my degree was on immersion in games, and how to break that immersion. Some time later, I ran a LARP where a character believed the world they were in was fake, which they would tell to other characters. According to some of the other players, this broke their immersion in the LARP.

So there is this link between reminding players that they are playing a game, and them losing immersion, and this is a topic which interests me.

When Tokiko told me that the world she was in was a false reality etc. it reminded me exactly of this. But there was an interesting aspect to this. The game was made by Uchikoshi, and I’ve followed his games since playing 999. That means that I’ve come to expect this sort of thing from him, especially after VLR. While it did break immersion, it also made me think ‘Uchikoshi is back to his old tricks’ in a sort of indulgent way. This understanding of the director made it that much easier to slip back into immersion. I just found that fascinating, as I doubt I would have had that sort of reaction were it almost anyone else behind it.

On that note, I’d love to see a collab project between Uchikoshi and Ryukishi07.

And speaking of 999, the bonus Somnium was exquisite, it was like a celebration of everything that led up to the game.

Finally, the reveal about Mizuki and Bibi. ...I didn’t like it.

Don’t get me wrong, Bibi is great, as is Mizuki. The problem is two-fold though. The first problem is that it retroactively weakens Mizuki’s character arc in the first game.

The second problem is that it effectively explains the joke of Mizuki’s super-human abilities. Not explaining it has this level of anime BS disbelief, while explaining it feels like they are trying to put wallpaper over cracks that weren’t even there.

Mizuki still best girl though.
