Thought I could handle a spooky little horror novel—did not expect 'em to come at me with the existential horrors of being a queer child of american evangelicals 😰

I am 🌟 COLLECTING 🌟 library cards
Reminder that the Libby App (library app - has books, audio, graphic novels) let's you add multiple libraries, you just need your card number and pin, and when you search for materials will search all of the data bases you have access to! Making the chances of you getting the book (and quickly for example if one library has a wait-list for the book, another might not) much better!!!
Don't buy books from Audible/Amazon when you can use free public resources even if you can't leave your house! You can even apply for library cards online without going in and usually get a 30 day grace period before having to go in with a license/id for a permanent library card 💖💖💖

l already knew the libby app somehow knows whether I own an ebook because if I've borrowed an ebook on the app and then I buy a copy of the same ebook then libby will be like "your loan has ended" and delete it off my library shelf. which is hilarious. the wizard librarian all sternly like "you have this virtual book at home. the virtual library copy is for people who do not. therefore *poof*"
anyway awhile back I asked the app to add me to the waiting list for a certain book if my library acquired a digital copy of it, and then got tired of waiting and bought it, but forgot to un-ask libby for it
so libby just sent me a notification like "your library has acquired a copy of this book..." and instead of "and we have added you to the wait list," or "but we see you already have a copy," it was just followed by nothing. like a digital disapproving stare. like "we came here to tell you something but..." (eyes slide past me and fix accusingly on the digital copy on the virtual shelf behind me)

People already talk about the benefits of the Libby app for free ebook reading (and audiobooks) through your local library but I gotta say, it has a lot of font and type space and size options. I've been reading with the open dyslexic font and wide line spacing and it works really well for me and makes reading soooo much easier than the default publisher styles. So if you've had problems reading ebooks before maybe try the accessibility settings out!

Somebody: Hey, sorry I'm late. I hope you weren't waiting long
Me, with all the passion of a social media influencer doing a sponsorship: It's okay, I don't mind waiting, because I have Libby! Libby is a free app that lets me access my local public library's entire catalogue of ebooks and audiobooks on my phone for free! Plus, I can upload multiple library cards and compare wait time across networks, so I get the books I want when I want them! My local library network has a deal with other library networks across the state, so with one card I can access over half a dozen collections! Libby also saves my place if I return a book without finishing it and then check it out again later. How convenient!

Sometimes Libby's "similar" tag is useful to find new books within a genre/vibe, and sometimes I say "hey Libby, show me books similar to this sort of historical pulp horror by Barbara Hambly" and Libby shows me 20 books that are not a similar genre at all but are all written by different people named Barbara.

i must not check out a new book on libby. checking out a new book on libby is the mindkiller. browsing book reviews is the little death that leads to total obliteration. i will face my desire to leave a book halfway read and i will permit it to pass over and through me. when it is gone past i will turn the inner eye to see its path. where the desire to have 15 currently reading books has gone there will be nothing. only i will remain.
-litany against starting a new book when you havent finished the last one

Me: AAH! HE USED THE WORD DEFENESTRATED!
coworker: what?
Me: in my audiobook! He used DEFENESTRATED!!!!
Coworker: what’s that mean?
Me: it means ‘thrown out a window’! But nobody actually uses it except to make fun of the word DEFENESTRATED! He just tossed it in there like it was nothing!
Coworker: I learned a new word today.
Me: WHO DOES THAT?!

this is a Libby app appreciation post
i love Libby.
Libby lets you enter your library card(s) and borrow ebooks and audiobooks instantly.
The previous incarnation, Overdrive, was clunky and frustrating.
But now I can have ebooks and audiobooks so easily and quickly, and I'm honestly so impressed by how well their app works.
Thank you to whoever advocated for, paid for, worked on, project managed, and tested this simple amazing app.

I just found out that Spotify now offers paid audiobooks. The thing is, if you have Spotify premium, you still have to pay for each audiobook you want to listen to. Which makes sense in the context of audiobooks as a whole but not on a platform I’m already paying.
So, anyway. Friendly reminder that you can access audiobooks for free on the Libby app. All you need is a library card.
And if you’re a minor, you can get a Brooklyn Library card even if you don’t live in NY. And their access to books is RIDICULOUSLY big! It’s a dream!

I'm rereading The Last Graduate (Naomi Novik) on my breaks while I wait for my hold on The Golden Enclaves to come through, and just.

so far getting a library card has been a major fucking letdown so uh. is the Libby app US-only or do people outside of the US use it?
