Book lovers know that "reading books" and "buying books" are two very, VERY different hobbies which are not necessarily complimentary.

Hannah Oliver Depp is a book superstar. Her mission has been to bring diverse books to more people’s shelves, and she’s doing so by running Loyalty Books, a Black, Queer, and Asian-owned bookstore with locations in DC and Maryland.
Back in 2020, Hannah and I sat down and talked about what goes on behind the scenes of running a mission-based brick-and-mortar. We cover everything from paying rent and filling stores to keeping up with taxes and new laws, which oftentimes are designed to break new businesses rather than build them.
Small businesses need so much support beyond our dollars: They need us to be vocal with our federal and state politicians about the importance of supporting community spaces. Head to the link in bio and for episode 99 (and a bonus episode recorded after shutdown) if you’d like to hear more about Hannah and her story.

Do You Love the Color of the Sun?
Tumblr media
Get dazzled by the true spectrum of solar beauty. From fiery reds to cool blues, explore the vibrant hues of the Sun in a mesmerizing color order. The images used to make this gradient come from our Solar Dynamics Observatory. Taken in a variety of wavelengths, they give scientists a wealth of data about the Sun. Don't miss the total solar eclipse crossing North America on April 8, 2024. (It's the last one for 20 years!) Set a reminder to watch with us.

All of this. Audiobooks are books.
Okay listen up: AUDIOBOOKS COUNT AS READING/EXPERIENCING LITERATURE.
I'm a whole librarian, and most of my book consumption is through audiobooks at this point.
Sometimes I want a book and my eyes are occupied with paperwork, computer work, kids, mowing my neighbors lawn, cooking, driving...and sometimes I can't find my glasses or don't feel like wearing them anymore. And so?
I'M STILL GOING TO HAVE MY BOOK.
Not physically reading the book with your own eyes does not mean you're not absorbing the material meaningfully. I have had patrons embarrassed to ask me about our audiobook selection, and they usually follow up with "I'm not blind or anything but..."
You don't have to be visually impaired to have an "excuse" to listen to your books! You're not lazy for preferring to listen to your books!
There are a great number of things about "book culture" that drive me nuts and this is probably the number one thing.
Live, laugh, listen to your books. Screw it.

Save it to your photos, print it out, put it on a wall. You should never forget how to use a library catalog card 🔖 #libraries #books #librarylove #librariesmatter http://dlvr.it/T4bk4f

25 YA Books for Indigenous Peoples Day
Tumblr media Tumblr media
NOTES: For brevity and diversity, I did not include all the North American Native books I found, but there are plenty more - feel free to post your favorites in the comments! Most books are from indigenous authors, but not all - do your own research if you like. Not all books may be “technically” YA. I’d love to hear more suggestions of Latin American indigenous stories or Hawai’ian native stories which were difficult to find.
EDIT: This is just a random list by a random tumblr blog from 2022 - get out there and find your own books or list some in the comments if you find this list lacking.
