It's been quite a few months of free practice as Lewis likes to call it, before you finally held the white plastic stick in your hand with the word positive blinking on the screen, causing your man to tear up because of the excitement and relief that had rushed through his body. He had embraced you, whispering sweet promises of the journey that would begin now, telling you of plans before the baby arrives. You reduced working hours, enjoying the soft glow lulling you into motherhood.
It's a beautiful thing to witness yourself turning into soon to be parents and it's a whole lot of new experiences like renovating the guest room to fit it into your child's room, something that blesses you often with a shirtless sweaty Lewis building the furniture together. Meanwhile you sit in one corner of the room with a snack on the moss green armchair Kevin Magnussen's wife recommended you, gazing at the muscles flex as he moves around.
Another trait of Lewis shines brightly — he detests leaving your side, would rather choose to sit out a race than leave you all alone back in England, even though his mums as well as yours are there for you.
He also hates the amount of attention you get since falling pregnant; everyone likes to comment on you, friends like to touch your stomach as if his child would react to their touch — Lewis doesn't let go of you, having you close, almost hidden behind his massive build and pulls you away when people get to close to his liking.
And last but not least, it's impossible for him to keep his hands off your body, especially when your stomach shows, your breasts are fuller and the face slightly chubbier. "You're too stunning to resits, pretty girl", he'll mutter while pressing a soft kiss on your forehead, arms slung around your hips.
Whenever he's home you'd be woken up by his gentle whispering, telling your child of crazy yet child friendly memories around the track or of you, nuzzling his nose to your bump and kiss the faint strechmarks.
As of right now Lewis impatiently waits for your family to leave, his hands itching to touch you. The love your guests give you are making you glow and giddy, even more so than the first half of the week with only him, causing the ugly feeling of jealousy to strike within him. He knows he shouldn't feel like this but he wants to be your sun, not one of many stars shining on you.
Jealousy is a horrible emotion.
A delightful sigh escapes him as you hug your sibling goodbye before closing the door and falling right in his awaiting arms, bump pressing against his abdomen. Its innocent, you just want to feel his warmth, through your man has other plans and slowly drops his hands from your the small of your back to your perky ass, pulling the cheeks apart just to let them jiggle, which results in you snickering.
"You're horny again, Lew?", you sweetly ask, hands wandering to his braids, tugging them.
He groans and you feel him getting hard. "You know I can never not touch you. Making me all hot and bothered, specially like this, so full of me." His tone holds honesty and leaves no room for anything other than his endless love he showers you in as he guides you down the hallway and into your shared bedroom, where he clicks the lights on. He wants to see you when you take his cock and make a mess on it.
"I'm a lucky bastard, if not the luckiest, having you, the most drop deep gorgeous woman carrying my baby and to make love to you as long as you let me", he husks, "to kiss those lips, to touch your beautiful body."
He grabs the hem of your cute summer dress and then your underwear, gently removing both clothing articles from your body to see all of you. You're beautiful like this, naked and natural, blushing under the confession he has said and the avoiding of eye contact because he knows you're shy now.
"Lay down for me and spread those legs, yeah?", he whispers, still in awe of you.
You do as he says, body tingling as his eyes roam freely over you, taking you in, while taking his clothes off. Then he stags up to you, slothing between your legs and press a butterfly kiss on your sensitive pussy that has you whimper desperately. A hand of yours curls in his hair and you look down at Lewis, a blissful expression on his face as he has his eyes closed and his nose nugging your clit.
He's fully focused on making out with your pussy, pressing open mouthed kisses and slurping the juices like its his last time. Hands roam your body until your legs close around him, and he pulls them apart, holding them up as far as possible with your bump — it's not that big but can get in the way of things.
"So beautiful and all mine." His hot breath faws over your wet cunt that flutters around nothing. "You're so needy, want to have a finger in you, don't you, pretty girl?" You prob yourself on the elbows, gaze at him to already find him looking at you — there's a smug smirk on his wet covered lip and he waits for your answer. "I— I need your cock Lew", you sob,"please don't tease me, fuck me."
The sobbing is music to his ears. "Nah, baby, beg some more. Ain't gonna fuck you with my cock if you're not behaving correctly, you know that." Your boyfriend moves over you, elbows resting on either side of your head as he leans down to crash his lips on yours. Instantly you open your mouth to let his tongue glide in and interweave your hands with him. Kissing him itself is sloppy and breathtaking, intense even because he re-focus all your senses on the feeling of his tongue brushing against yours and plush lips moving sensually. A loud whine fills the space when he breaks the kiss. "Beg for me, pretty girl, be good f'me."
"Please. . please fuck me", you cry out, "Want your cock inside of me, please."
Lewis raises his eyebrows. "Don't you think you forgot something?"
You gulp. "Sir, please fuck me. I'm so so wet for you."
"That's better", is all Lewis says before you feel him rubbing his thick tip along the slit of your slick cunt and hear him groan. "Someone is just as horny as me, huh? Have you been wet all day, pretty girl?"
A loud incoherent moan slips from your lips when Lewis bullies his length past your tightness, grinding his hips as he's fully sheated between your gummy walls. "Can't talk to me anymore? Already gone, huh?" Lewd squelching are heard when he pulls out till only an inch is in you, and then he trusts, first one slow, the second one a bit rougher, pace growing faster as your begging cries echo through the bedroom. He grabs your shaking legs, laying them on his left shoulder to get a deeper access to your wetness.
Meanwhile your eyes fill with tears of pleasure, abdomen tightening and toes curl, nearing the edge. Lewis knows your body inside out, and dips a finger between your lips. You suck on his thumb, tongue tracing the tip as if it is his cock. But before you can register what comes next, he pulls his thumb out and smooth it on your clit, circling to push you to the orgasm.
Moaning uncontrollably, your back arches off the bed as the pleasure crushes you, shine glazes over your eyes and you're a goner. Through the high, long dick still slides into you despite the come flowing out on either side, making Lewis grunt. He's much closer than expected, having leaned over again — he's now kissing your tears tenderly away, you're feeling giddy. "Such a pretty girl", he groans, his own high peeking.
You cling to him as you both come down the high, peppering you with kisses and praise. It has you glow in his strong arms, and you're sure there's nothing better than this — building a family with the man you love beyond the stars.

If you sent your S6 LI a nude while they were at work:
Did these for S4 but someone got in before me for S5, but now that we've got all the LIs, here we go. I don't have gifs this time, just HCs lol.
Andy
Has his hands full right this very second, holding a particularly nasty cat. Leans over to quickly glance at his phone, sees the image preview. Eyes go wide, and he leans in to make sure he's seeing things correctly. Completely loses all concentration, he's coming home with scratches up his arms. But don't worry, he's gonna get his girl to put a few more on his back when he gets home.
Bella
Can't really look at her phone while doing a set, but she feels it buzz a custom vibrate pattern in her pocket, and smiles a little. It's late , and there's only one reason that her girl would be awake at this hour... so Bella knows exactly what's in that text message. And she knows she's not sleeping at her place tonight.
Chloe
She doesn't have her phone while she's practicing or on stage, but as soon as she comes off it you best believe she's squealing. Everyone's asking her what happened, and she's proudly announcing that her girl just sent her a nude. But she's not sharing. The other ballerinas aren't getting a look at her girl.
Elliot
He's in the middle of streaming. His phone chimes, sees its from his girl, pauses to look at it (because he always pauses the game for her), and immediately just freezes. He glances up at the camera, then back at his phone, then back at the camera.
"Sorry guys, gotta go. Something has... uh... come up. Don'tforgettosubscribebyee!" Slams the computer shut, he is gone.
Flo
She's probably overseas, so she can't rush home like the others, but she can take a break, jumping into the nearest bathroom, locking the doors and taking a sneaky nude back. She's been in enough photos, she knows how to take them. The pic she's sending back is good enough to frame.
Francis
Doesn't have a phone. Even if he did, doesn't have reception in the middle of the forest.
Jamal
Got his airpods in while practicing in the half pipe. Siri reads it out. 'Text message from My Girl. Attachment: 1 image. Text message reads: I want you.'
Jamal immediately wipes out on the half pipe. He's fine. He climbs out, packs his shit and is on his fucking way.
Lewie
Just finished training, checks his phone. Eyes go wiiiiiide. The lads see him and know exactly why, but he quickly locks his phone and packs his shit. Doesn't bother showering. He can do that at her place when he drags her in there with him.
Marshall
Like Flo, sneaking into the bathroom to send her a dick pic back. He’s a sexting pro, in minutes she’s on her way to drop by wherever his event is. Crazy quickie in the backseat of his car. Gives her a kiss, fixes his clothes, back to work like nothing happened. Sends her a text a little later to let her know he’s ready for round two
Ozzy
Would barely be able to tell anything was awry. The tiniest smirk, the subtlest flash of fire in his eyes, and a text back.
"Damn"
Roberto
He can't talk right away, (he's flying a fucking plane, obviously). But he can check it at the hotel that night. He's immediately sending her one back, and then, he's picking up the phone to call her. He's not hanging up until they're both satisfied.
Ryan
Like Bella, he's probably performing, so he can't respond right away. But when he sees it, he's sending her a message back straight away, gushing about how beautiful she looks... and telling her in no uncertain terms exactly, step-by-step, what he is going to do to her when he gets home.
Bonus: Hamish
Checks the message, fires a text back, slips it back into his pocket. No prospective buyers any the wiser. She opens the text back: 'On your back on the dining room table. Fifteen minutes.' He's making a... quick stop at home before his next showing.

Champions in the making - Emilia Romagna GP review
The breakthrough kid
It is not always possible to pinpoint the exact moment in which a driver goes from young promise to champion in the making. There can be breakthrough performances, in which a driver lays down a marker and announces himself to the world, but more often than not the progression is so gradual over a number of seasons that the driver eventually makes it to the top in slow steps, a sink filling up drop by drop from a leaky faucet.
But every once in a while, we get to witness a breakthrough moment, one of those weekends that, when looking back into a career, will be seen as a pivotal moment in which the promise has come good, which removes the doubt of whether that potential will be fulfilled. Moments like Sebastian Vettel winning in a Toro Rosso, or Max Verstappen becoming a Grand Prix winner on his Red Bull debut; we knew, there and then, what they would become.
It wasn’t his maiden win, but this is what we witnessed this weekend from Lando Norris.
Coming into this season, the young Brit knew this could be a make or break year for him. He had done really well to match his more experienced teammate in his first two seasons, but the challenge with his new partner was at a different level. No disrespect to Carlos Sainz, who is definitely a talented driver, but Daniel Ricciardo is a proven race winner, someone who had driven for Red Bull and been considered by Mercedes and Ferrari. The Aussie had spent the last two seasons destroying Nico Hulkenberg and Esteban Ocon, no slouches themselves, which meant there was a risk for Norris to be swallowed up by the Honey Badger’s performances.
His first two seasons had shown glimpses of his talent, but also a certain on-track shyness, in contrast to his expansive personality off it. He himself admitted during pre-season that he needed to improve on his aggressiveness and push harder on wheel to wheel battles; he had to drive the car ever closer to its limits. After a couple of seasons maturing and honing his skills, now was the time to be a more imposing figure behind the wheel, including within his own team.
Bahrain had already shown glimpses of that. He started the race behind his teammate, but passed him early on and never looked back. Imola, though, was something else. McLaren didn’t have the right set-up throughout Friday and both drivers seemed to be struggling, but on Saturday Norris looked to be one with his car. Bar a small mistake on his last run, he would have not only out-qualified his teammate, but also Verstappen in a much faster Red Bull. The track limits infringement left him P7 on the grid, but on Sunday he would more than make up for the mistake.
He had blistering pace from the get-go, to the point that he radioed his engineer when stuck behind his teammate to ask to be let through. In a moment that could be defining for the season, Ricciardo did let him through and then saw the youngster disappear down the road in the chase for the Ferraris. On the restart, he made light work of Leclerc (with much faster tyres, to be fair) and then fought Hamilton hard for several laps until the lack of grip on his rubber forced him to concede.
Overall, Norris showed a wide array of his skills at Imola: blistering one-lap pace, attacking, defending, tyre management, determination to come back after the mistake on Saturday, even authority in the team when he asked to be let through his teammate. A complete performance that leaves no doubt about his talent: he has the skills to be a future champion, the only question remaining is whether he will have the consistency to deliver over a full season. Given his mental approach - he is very open to speak about mental health - it seems he is addressing that side of his driving as well.
Until now, Norris had been the fun kid with a turn of pace, the meme-generator and half of a McLaren bromance. The end of the partnership with Sainz might have been a liberating factor for him: in order to be taken more seriously, the banter has to take second place to his driving, and with Ricciardo also looking to leave his more goofy side in the background, this can be the perfect time for Lando to do the same and let his driving do the talking. He certainly did that this weekend.
Talking points
* My oh my, do we have a fight on our hands. Verstappen v. Hamilton is already becoming such a compelling story it is hard not to make it the subject of every race review and preview; the feeling is that this will be a fight for the ages, that we will have a season to be remembered for many years to come. This time around it was the Dutchman who had the upper hand, with a superb start to go from P3 to P1 into Tamburello. He gave no quarters to Hamilton on the outside and then managed the race beautifully, although he was left unchallenged in the second half after Hamilton’s crash. The game is most definitely on.
* The reigning champion may have given some small signs of the pressure getting to him. Mostly unchallenged in recent years, Lewis made an uncharacteristic mistake when lapping back markers and then seemed to have had a scrambled brain moment as he struggled to get out of the run-off area. He is human, after all, some might have thought. The red flag gave him the opportunity to reset and come back to re-claim P2 and a podium place he would have certainly lost otherwise. He showed his mental resilience then, but it will be interesting to see how he (and Verstappen as well) will manage the pressure of a title fight (hopefully) over 23 races.
* One of the big talking points post-race was the massive crash between Bottas and Russell. Approaching Tamburello, drivers hit speeds above 300 kph, so it’s no surprise it was a nasty one, and that both drivers felt the other should have done more to avoid it. Controversy aside, the big question has to be why was Bottas defending P9 from a Williams. Like Monza, Turkey and Sakhir last year, when the Finn gets caught up in the midfield he struggles to move forward, and even manages to fall further back. To make matters worse, in all these races his teammate was caught in similar situations and had no problem cutting through the field. When the dust settles, Bottas will certainly have some soul searching to do.
* How good is it to see McLaren and Ferrari fighting each other for top spots? The two historic teams collected all positions from P3 to P6 and seem to be a step above the rest of the midfield contenders. This is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, rivalry in F1’s history, and it’s great for the sport to see it reignited.
* The only midfield team that seems to have the pace to challenge them is AlphaTauri, but they are struggling to convert their pace into points. Tsunoda ruined his weekend with two (very rookie) mistakes, while Gasly’s race was ruined by the decision to start on full wets. He still made a great recovery drive to finish P7, but this felt like another missed opportunity for AlphaTauri, specially at a track they know so well. They have a genuine shot at finishing in the top half of the table, which is Franz Tost’s goal for the team, but in order to achieve that they have to start using their pace to score points.
* If AlphaTauri will be left ruing their weekend, Williams will be doubly so. With two drivers qualifying in the top 14, they had genuine hope to score points for the first time since the crazy rain-soaked German GP in 2019, but two crashes negated their shot. Latifi barely got going so we will never know what he could have achieved, but Russell was clearly in the mix and will be left pondering how high he could have finished if he had been a bit more cautious. With scoring opportunities so limited, that might have been the wiser approach.
* The second Red Bull continues the saga of the topsy-turvy weekends. One of the narratives for Albon in 2020 was that he was not able to have a clean, incident-free weekend, and that was limiting his results. Perez is going down the same path, and although he did manage to salvage a P5 in Bahrain, here he was left empty-handed. It’s still very early, and the signs from the first race were positive, but for Red Bull to challenge Mercedes he needs to be up there consistently.
* Ahead of the season, very few people would have betted for Stroll and Ocon to be beating their teammates, either in qualifying or in the race. The two youngsters are showing that world titles (a combined 6 after all) aren’t a guarantee of continued success.
* On that topic, it is worth noting that most drivers that are newcomers to their respective teams are struggling at the moment. Sainz at Ferrari is the exception; Perez, Ricciardo, Alonso and Vettel are all underperforming, some more than others. This quartet is uber-talented, though, so expect them to get closer to their teammates as the season progresses and they become more accustomed to their new cars.
* Curb your enthusiasm, Yuki. We love to see his on-track flamboyance: he is one of the most exciting drivers to hit F1 in the last few years, but it can work against him too. He needs to find a balance but two races in these growing pains were to be expected. Once he finds that balance, he will be one hell of a driver.
Driver of the day: Lando Norris
Moment of the day
The battle between Hamilton and Norris. The young Brit managed to hold off the 7-times champion for a handful of laps, with tyres well past their expiry date and no DRS; Leclerc, for comparison, was on mediums and was passed by Hamilton on the first lap he didn’t have DRS. Norris’ positioning was perfect and he was brave on the brakes. Eventually the lack of grip and Hamilton’s bravery led to the inevitable, but Norris put up an excellent fight.

Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Preview
It all comes down to this, one final race, where any tiny slip up or mistake can have huge consequences. There is also the matter of getting used to a new track, which may favour Mercedes over Red Bull!
Having come back from a huge deficit, Mercedes and Hamilton are the favourites this weekend, especially given their form around here. As well as momentum, the team just in general seems to be in a great place, probably relishing the challenge in front of them. Lewis was slightly slower than Max in the morning, but his lap in FP2 was likely unbeatable, even if Max had got a proper lap in. Engines will be a question once again this weekend, and with the super engine now in its third weekend, how much can Mercedes afford to turn it up? I think they will still have the advantage over Red Bull tomorrow; however, race pace could be much closer in my opinion, and that’s what matters. On his last weekend at the team, Bottas started the weekend a bit scrappy, with a huge lock up and a tap with the wall, he got away with it, and will want to end it all on a high.
You get the feeling that Red Bull are worried that the title is slipping away from them at the last moment, and after a brilliant season for them, it would be hard to take for the whole team. Max’s luck has been slightly worse than Lewis, although that has been balanced out, you could argue, by aggression and tantrums by Red Bull. They are not far away from Mercedes at all this weekend, yet I think Verstappen may struggle to overhaul the Mercedes unless we get a crazy race. He also needs to calm his racing down a bit after Saudi Arabia, as if he makes a slight mistake here, it could ruin his entire year! Perez could play a role in deciding the title, but to do so, he has to get himself clear of the midfield this weekend.
With the constructors basically done for Ferrari, they said they could turn the engines right up for the final round. So, given how good the new engine is already, who knows what they could do on Sunday, maybe give us a preview of 2022? Despite a quieter Friday, I do expect big things from Ferrari this weekend, but nonetheless, it has been a great turn around year for them after 2020. The two teammates also need to keep it clean, as the battles between those two seem to be getting fiercer week by week.
McLaren have some good points on the board now from the last few races, and this track could actually be one to suit them. Norris will be out for vengeance after getting very annoyed at the Red Flag rules a week ago. Fighting for 5th in the driver’s title will also motivate him, as the idea of him being 6th or 7th would have been crazy a few months ago. AlphaTauri are once again ominous in the top 10, points are definitely on the cards here for them. It is nice also to see Tsunoda starting to get a streak of good performances under his belt.
Alpine have been one of the star teams of the final stretch of the season, and I know this is just Friday, but surely, they can’t lose that much overnight. Ocon is starting to perform on Alonso’s level at this part of the season, after being hit and miss early on, and has the potential to lead the team in the future. Being best of the rest to end the season will send a statement to teams like Ferrari and McLaren, that they can’t just look at the teams ahead in 2022, they need to be wary behind them too.
Aston Martin and Alfa Romeo had difficult days, Aston just lacked pace once again, and they can’t rely on Sunday to solve a poor Saturday. The only upside for them is that this year is almost over, and they will have been the team most looking forward to next year! Kimi finished his final Friday practice in the wall, leaving his team a lot of work to do, hopefully he can make up for it over the next two days, and end his career on a good note! Points for Russell as he leaves Williams seems to be a long shot, and Mick is yet again grabbing at the heels of the teams ahead, showing off his talent!
Both drivers deserve the title, but the form guide would say that Lewis is the favourite. However, to summarise how I feel about the weekend, I will take something Damon Hill said yesterday. I don’t care if Verstappen or Lewis wins, I want F1 to win, and have a clean, fair decider, to show the world how good this sport can be!

Pissed my entire lovecraft country episode 7 liveblog got deleted fuck. But imma try to summarize my thoughts.
My favorite episode of the season so far !
Dee is a badass just like her mom and dad and no matter what happens next episode that lil girl is amazing. She got snaps and claps from me for beating the jiggaboos ass and correcting those crooked ass cops.
"Hippolyta is greek assholes."
Christina and Tic are like Cain and Able. So it makes sense why Christina is so cold, if she cared about anyone but herself she would not be as motivated towards her goal of immortality or ascending magical heights. Because then she would have something/someone who she would have to consider in her decision. Tic is is similar in this way but its the reverse for him. Cousins not brothers but similar.
But lil miss Christina apparently got feeling strong as hell to subject herself to Emmet Tills exact death just so she can have some semblance of the pain it feels when black people look a member of the community so violently.
Ruby finally told Leti she is fucking her enemy. The pipe too good and honey pit too sweet to stop now lmfao.
Ruby had me wanting to cry though before and when that cop pulled up. William/Christina had to be like get off my woman. Which they are bold as hell being so publicly open in an interracial relationship.
That sex scene though:
Tumblr media
We finally have seen the transformation from black to white to black Ruby and I wanna say the effects team brava.
The conversation they had about Christina feeling nothing toward's Emmets death anf not caring about anyone else is so crazy good. Everything Ruby said is exactly what it feels like dating a white person as a black person. You want them to relate and be sympathetic but they never will fully understand unless they go through it together. Which as I pointed to she did that.
Ruby is selfish, glad Christina pointed that out so bluntly, cause Ruby did not need to go to Christina after that funeral but she did. Cause she wanted some passionate, some strings, dick to numb her feelings.
I love how everyone could tell Leti was pregnant on Tics side, like pregnancy smelling noses.
Leti and Jiah that table conversation was tense as fuck. Tic is a p.o.s for how he treated Ji-ah and is treating Leti. Learn how to fucking communicate sir. He threw Ji-Ah out of that house like it was his but he don't pay no bills. Thats Leticia fucking Lewis' house. Ji-Ah was trying to help him and he was too dense and dumb to see she loves him.
Wild, that Tic saw the future and his sons book also i appreciate them tying the source material to the show in that way.
Montrose is actually being a good dad which is strange for me, but he never cheated on Tics momma. Also he is helping Tic use magic and is willing to sacrifice himself, there is so much about him that Atticus obviously doesn't know. Which is so sad.
That protection spell on Tic mirrored with the one Christina put on Leti and the baby. Which probably means something.
As I said in my original liveblog the Bible is a book of magic, spells, and faith in ways that people fail to see.
I found it funny that they gave Christina all the pieces she needed and she didn't even force their hands or coerce them, she just left the door open for communication. Which is something they all could learn.
Fuck these cops, fuck all of them. That mark of Cain (which is clever) came in handy completely. I wonder how Christina would react if Ruby had died. Yaknow what no i don't she a lil too powerful and bold for that.
Entirely and completely fuck that chief or sheriff or whatever the fuck he was. Nasty add spit.
So glad shoggoth puppy ripped him and all his goons to fucking shreds.
Speaking of which shoggoth puppy!!! What should we name him, im thinking shogo or crafty.
Does anyone know the significance of the lights being turned off in their town that night?
Next episode preview thoughts: I fucking love this show and I need more like it. Next episode looks wild. Leti is being all protective of her big sister because Christina and Ruby said:
Tumblr media
And Montrose is playing captain save a legacy. I need more shows like this with black people ugh I feel so seen as a nerdy black person. Books are great but we shouldn't just be shoved into words without pictures and never seeing ourselves in realities we could only imagine.

British Arrows Greatest Hits bring welcome warmth via the Walker Art Center
Tumblr media
“I thought they were going to be depressing,” my partner said with relief when our preview screening of the British Arrows Greatest Hits wrapped up.
Her concern wasn’t unfounded: the Arrows, formerly known as the British Television Advertising Awards, have had some harrowing years as the U.K. ad industry honors public service announcements designed to increase seatbelt usage, or inspire donations for cancer research, or reduce the prevalence of knife fights (an almost quaint aim from the perspective of the gun-crazy United States).
This year, though, the Arrows have reached into their archives for 80 minutes of nearly pure pleasure: a selection of funny and warm, or at worst wistful, clips from the awards’ multi-decade history. The Walker Art Center has long had a close relationship with the Arrows, teaching generations of globally-minded Minnesotans to make the annual screenings an Anglophilic holiday tradition.
With everything disrupted, this year the Arrows are going virtual, and the Walker’s Virtual Cinema is streaming the Greatest Hits from November 19 through January 4. At $12 per household it’s an easy choice to replace a night watching whatever Netflix coughs up for Christmas.
This isn’t the first year the Arrows have plumbed their vault; for the awards’ 30th anniversary in 2016, the presentation opened with a chronological presentation of past highlights, a few of which are reprised once again here. (You wouldn’t want to omit the iconic Cadbury gorilla.) This year, though, the calendar goes on shuffle as we zing back and forth across the years to enjoy some of the most creative, heart-warming, eye-popping ads to ever have been honored.
The resulting presentation hits all the pleasure centers that Arrows fans have learned to prime. There’s the comically reverent beer ad (a 2002 spot for Stella, natch), the special effects spectacular (a 2007 clip for Bravia that doused an entire housing complex in splashes of liquid color), the cute animal clip (remember #DancePonyDance, from 2013?), the historical pageant (a 2009 mini-film in which a boy carries a loaf of Hovis through the entire 20th century), and of course a John Lewis Christmas advert (this one from 2012, with an eye-moistening twist ending).
If you’re an Arrows regular, of course you’ll find that one of your favorites has been omitted (I’ll forever stan the PG Tips sock monkey), but you’ll also be reminded of a classic you’d forgotten (He-Man and Skeletor dancing dirty, anyone?). Warning: you’ll also be reminded that flash mobs used to be a thing.
The presentation concludes with a handful of ads made in recent months, during distancing compelled by the coronavirus pandemic. Needless to say they’re creative and charming, but the best of them has Snoop Dogg gyrating on a packed dance stage while he raps about the food delivery service Just Eat — a poignant reminder that what we’re bound to be most nostalgic for this holiday season is the ability to be together in real life.
Until we can do so safely, though, screens will have to suffice, and if anyone knows how to make good use of screen time, it’s the people who have to pay £1,000 a second for it.

The Masked Singer Season 4 Episode 8: Group B Finals with *GASP* a Double Elimination (Commentary and Guesses)
Hello my fellow fans of the Masked Singer! Welcome (or welcome back) to Ana’s Masked Singer Recap where I, Ana, recap every episode of the Masked Singer. It’s that time again, Group B Finals time... so last week I changed up the format for these recaps due to the smackdown but this week there is no smackdown but there is a double elimination so we will be talking about 2 eliminated contestants instead of 1 this time, and oh boy I have a lot to say about one of them in particular, but we’ll get there when we get there. Anyways, let’s just get started, shall we? (please remember to like, comment your guesses/what you think, and follow for more Masked Singer fun)
The Group B Finals was a bit different with 4 contestants instead of 3 battling it out for 2 spots in the Super Six...
The 4 contestants were Whatchamacallit 👁, Serpent 🐍, Seahorse 🐠, and Crocodile 🐊
First, the 2 who got eliminated were:
* DRUMROLL PLEASE*
Serpent 🐍 and Whatchamacallit 👁
Ok, so let’s start with the unsurprising eliminatation aka:
Whatchamacallit 👁
Tumblr media
Performance/Commentary: Ok, even though he isn’t my favorite of the 4 (he’s actually my least favorite), he did a great job, it was a fun performance ngl. It was great, even though I predicted that he would leave, I still enjoyed his performance of Lean Back by Terror Squad.
Having said that, the Whatchamacallit was revealed to be (as I suspected):
Lonzo Ball
Tumblr media
Yayyyy I knew it (by the way so did Ken, and he went NUTS, it was hilarious).... So here are the clues that gave this guy away lol:
High school prom thing: he actually met his gf/baby momma as the package said when he was a sophomore and she was a senior and she was his prom date
The Friend/Family was a high school teacher dressed as a whistle = reference to what a ref would use in Basketball since he is a 🏀 player
(Ok so there was a clue from a mask from the past with a connection to them.... so I will showcase both the mask from the past of MS and the clue delivered aka the game changing clue) Mask from the past: Ice Cream aka YouTuber/streamer Ninja who Lonzo Ball beat playing Fortnite in a live stream
Game changing clue: he has won a championship = um, yeah self explanatory, he has won basketball championships in UCLA and as an LA Laker
Ok, now elimination #2 aka the elimination I have a lot to say about:
Serpent 🐍
Tumblr media
Commentary/Performance: His performance of Cool by the Jonas Brothers was a change of pace for him I am not gonna lie. It was fun and upbeat, something he hasn’t done before on the show. I honestly don’t think this was his best performance, because his voice is more well suited for ballads, and powerful ones at that. I still really enjoyed this tho.
Ok so Serpent was revealed to be:
Dr. Elvis Francois
Tumblr media
Ok, I kind of figured it out last minute. Here’s my piece: I said it was Leslie Odom Jr and I really wanted it that to be the case (yo Leslie you better do it next season... I would die if you did), a bunch of people in the comments on YouTube told me it’s Dr. Elvis and I was like nope not him I bet... and I was wrong, I kind of got it this week with the clues & the preview where Ken was crying (here are the clues):
Good Mayo clue= he works at the Mayo Clinic as an orthopedic surgeon
Multiple medical clues= again I say, he works as a surgeon
Peanut butter, banana clues= his namesake, Elvis, like Elvis Presley who is known to like peanut butter and banana sandwiches
Mask from the Past: Eagle aka Dr. Drew = honestly, do I gotta explain this one? DOCTOR 👨‍⚕️, hello?! He’s a Dr as well
Game Changing Clue: he sang with one of the judges before = he actually did sing with Nicole on After the Mask at the beginning of the pandemic
Alright now that’s over, time to celebrate/guess the remaining 2 going into the super 6:
1. Crocodile 🐊
Tumblr media
Performance: ok, I feel like Crocodile has kind of fallen under the radar but this was honestly his best performance yet! He sang Bleeding Love by Leona Lewis, a classic early 2000s song, and it was amazing. It showed off his vocal range that he hasn’t showed off before and it really made him a very great competitor, it was so close between him and serpent
I am still guessing that Croc is...
Nick Carter
Tumblr media
Reason I think this is because of the clues:
New Kids on the Block clues (Step By Step reference) = Backstreet Boys toured with them all over the world
Mask from the past: Bee aka Gladys Knight = they collaborated together on an album, Knight and Carter
Game Changing Clue: was in a cult classic movie= he was an extra in Edward Scissorhands
2. Seahorse 🐠
Tumblr media
Performance: As you guys probably know from watching my previous recaps, she is one of my favorite contestants on the show, I love her so much, and her performance of Baby One More Time by Britney Spears didn’t disappoint. Omg it was the best performance of the night for sure! She really knows how to impersonate Britney Spears so well, it’s crazy, I loved it
As for my guess for Seahorse, I am gonna stick with...
Tori Kelly
Tumblr media
Here’s why, cue the clues:
Gospel, Spiritual Advisor, Church Clues= she’s a very devout Christian
Guitar, Nashville chicken= she plays guitar all the time when she’s performing (hell that pic of her I used above, she is legit holding a guitar, how obvious could that be) and the Nashville thing is because she does write a lot of country songs there
Christmas Wreath= she just released a Christmas Album, A Tori Kelly Christmas, earlier this year in October
2 Babies= she sang the song Baby Baby with Amy Grant
Mask from the Past: Astronaut aka Hunter Hayes = she beat him when she won the show America’s Most Talented Kid back when they were kids and I think she might have performed with him, there is a country connection between the 2
Game Changer Clue: Never been in a girl group = yup, Tori Kelly never has been in a girl group (look it up... that was a Ken impression if you didn’t get that)
Alright so that’s it, whew that was an interesting recap right there, anyways I can’t wait to see Group C next week! I’ll see you all then, bye guys! Don’t forget to like, comment, and follow for more Masked Singer content (and any other pop culture content you want me to do... when this is over, The Masked Dancer would be next so be on the look out for that late December 😆)

Billboard #1s 1985
Under the cut.
Foreigner -- "I Want To Know What Love Is" -- February 2, 1985
One of the quintessential 80s power ballads. It's actually kind of interesting if you think about it enough. He's not in love yet, but he's gotten sick of not being in love, so he's asking someone he's in the pre-love stage with to show him. Though he's had "heartache and pain" before, and doesn't know if he can face it again. It's not consistent. I feel like it's a missed opportunity, but oh well. It's good enough for what it is.
Wham! -- "Careless Whisper" -- February 16, 1985
Oh my god I love the saxophone in this. The music throughout the song is so incredibly sexy. And this is the kind of song George Michael's voice was made for. He's totally capable of sounding both hot and in agony at the same time. I actually adore a whole lot of cheating songs -- mostly, though not exclusively, the tormented kind. Drama! Love! Sex! Angst! Gorgeous.
REO Speedwagon -- "Can't Fight This Feeling" -- March 9, 1985
<3. He keeps singing "r"s like a pirate, but he doesn't go as hard on the other consonants, so I'm good with it. Lyrically, this song sounds like it might be two songs mashed together. "What started out as friendship has grown stronger" or "my life has been such a whirlwind since I saw you." Well which is it? Except I've had that happen. I love this song.
Phil Collins -- "One More Night" -- March 30, 1985
This is a depressing heartbreak song without the saving grace of any of Phil Collins' neat drum stuff. Blah.
We Are the World -- April 13, 1985
Whoo boy. I was 8 when this came out. Obviously I loved it. All the kids loved it. Now, though... I'm sorry, but it's bad. Really bad. Many others have gone deeply into why it's bad. I feel acutely embarrassed listening to it, so I'm just running away from it as fast as possible. (Remember all those celebrities singing "Imagine" in their mansions in 2020? I blame this song for that.)
Madonna -- "Crazy For You" -- May 11, 1985
This is one of Madonna's most straightforward love songs. Maybe the most, period. This or "Cherish," and this is a better song. It's lovely. Like Olivia Newton-John, Madonna can act a song. (Unlike in most movies she's been in.) But what I'm thinking about now is learning in this article that her label wouldn't let Madonna release "Into the Groove" as a single. That song was huge. It was played on the radio all the time. If it had been released as a single, or maybe if Billboard had tracked songs then like it does today, it would have been a massive smash, definitely #1. "Into the Groove" is also the best song of her very early career. "Crazy for You" is good, but not nearly as special.
Simple Minds -- "Don't You Forget About Me" -- May 18, 1985
As I am "Gen X", I am supposed to deeply connect with The Breakfast Club. I was 8 years old when it came out. My life as a teenager was nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, like that movie. I didn't recognize any of the "types." I liked the movie when I saw it in college, mostly, but the whole sexual harassment turns into a relationship deal was not seen as cool any longer. The "jocks vs. nerds" thing also felt very dated. The school in the movie was bigger and richer than mine, but it's a fantasy.
Anyway, though I don't feel much about the movie, its breakout song was really good. It does speak to a real fear both in graduating high school and during young adult relationships. I haven't forgotten the people I knew in high school, as far as I know, but obviously they don't have the same importance to me any longer. I'm Facebook friends with a lot of them. And very much not with a couple who were the most important then, because we grew apart -- or blasted apart. One of the nicest girls I knew in high school thinks there's a war on Christmas. Another keeps trying to get me to join her MLM. One of my best friends became my first boyfriend, and I don't regret that, but it was also a semi-disaster. And others... we just have nothing to say to each other any longer.
So, Breakfast Club: I don't connect with at all. "Don't You Forget About Me": Speaks to something very real and timeless.
Wham! -- "Everything She Wants" -- May 25, 1985
What a dick. Songs in which the narrator is a colossal jerk are perfectly fine, of course, but this one gets under my skin. He's whining about his wife getting pregnant when she's dissatisfied with their life and that they're broke. As if it's something she chose to do to him. She's stuck creating a whole other person with her blood and flesh, and he thinks it's all and entirely about him. I really hate it.
Tears for Fears -- "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" -- June 8, 1985
I can't hear this song without thinking of this Baldur's Gate fan trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jdd06d2nids. Speaking of which, I am incredibly excited for Baldur's Gate 3. I've been reading the early access reviews on Steam, and anything anyone is saying that's negative is stuff I don't gaf about (except bugs), whereas the positive stuff, I care about deeply. I hope it's got some of the feeling of that trailer. Um, right, Tears for Fears.
Honestly, though, it works best as a Baldur's Gate theme song. I don't think everybody actually wants to rule the world. It sounds good though. And pretty different from other stuff around it. But I like Lorde's cover better, and not just because it fits so wonderfully with all sorts of fantasy stories.
I usually play a paladin or paladin-type the first time in fantasy RPGs, but I'm thinking bard this time.
Bryan Adams -- "Heaven" -- June 22, 1985
He's been with this woman since they were young, and while they've broken up and gone through rough patches, now they're together forever and they're "in heaven." Bryan Adams knew exactly how to write a song that would become a hit. I used to not mind it at all, but it also means nothing to me. The chorus is catchy as hell though. So catchy that I ended up waking up with it in my head and it would not leave for hours and hours, so now I resent this song.
Phil Collins -- "Sussudio" -- July 6, 1985
I refuse to believe anyone ever told Phil Collins he was too young. He was born middle-aged. Anyway, the narrator isn't supposed to be him, so it's fine, but it's still kinda funny. He's got a crush on someone who doesn't even know his name, but "she's all I need all of my life." Um. The music is repetitive, the drums aren't as interesting as Phil Collins at his best, and I don't like the lyrics. I don't hate it, but I don't like it either.
Duran Duran -- "View to a Kill" -- July 13, 1985
I'm not sure I've ever heard this song before. It's about as good a song as the Bond movie they wrote it for was as a movie. In other words, it's bad. I'm not even sure there's a melody. Just a mess. "Ordinary World" would have made a far better Bond theme, but of course that was the 90s, when Duran Duran decided to try to make sense both lyrically and musically.
Paul Young -- "Every Time You Go Away" -- July 27, 1985
I like the high keyboard notes in this. They're sort of haunting. The rest of the song is musically pretty good, too. Lyrically though, it's only passable. This woman keeps leaving him every time "the leading man" shows up, so I guess he's the backup. Why does he keep waiting for her anyway? There's no hint in the song. I'm kind of embarrassed for him.
Tears for Fears -- "Shout" -- August 3, 1985
I think "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" is a better song than this one when done by Lorde. But I think "Shout" is a better song than Tears for Fears' original iteration of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." The chorus seems clear enough. But the verses are not. "They gave you life/ And in return you gave them hell" makes sense in isolation, but then there's a bunch of stuff that doesn't go with it. Like "I'd really love to break your heart" -- wtf? But the music is really good.
Huey Lewis and the News -- "The Power of Love" -- August 24, 1985
This was the big song for Back to the Future, and it meshed beautifully with the movie, but it doesn't need that association to be a great song. "Don't need money, don't take fame/ Don't need no credit card to ride this train/ It's strong and it's sudden, it can be cruel sometimes/ But it might just save your life." Yep. It's sort of Motown, sort of rock, and I love it. (Also: "Stronger and harder than a bad girl's dream." Heh.)
John Parr -- "St. Elmo's Fire" -- August 24, 1985
Of all the John Hughes movies I have not seen and do not plan to see, St. Elmo's Fire sure is one of them. The song is about a disabled man who inspired people by rolling himself cross-country in his wheelchair for charity, which has absolutely nothing to do with the movie. I'm disabled, and I just... okay look, what he did was admirable. But we shouldn't have to be inspirations to be counted as worthwhile, and I've been told I should die because I can't produce for capitalism, so you know. I've got some personal issues with this and I'm gonna move along.
Dire Straits -- "Money for Nothing" -- September 21, 1985
This is not Dire Straits' best song, but it's an awfully fun one. I watched the video tons when I was a kid. (That sound is Tipper Gore falling to the floor in a dead faint.) The music is great rock. And the lyrics are very true-to-life. You can either sanitize people or present them as they are honestly, and I know which I prefer.
Ready for the World -- "Oh Sheila" -- October 12, 1985
The band's from Michigan. The English accent at the beginning of the song is fake. That's a good preview for the song, which sounds like a 3rd-rate Prince knockoff at best. Blech.
a-ha -- "Take On Me" -- October 19, 1985
The video totally ripped off one of my aunts. Somehow or other, they saw into the little comic she drew for me about someone going into a land of drawings to rescue someone else in a romantic adventure, years before 1985. Anyway, this song is great musically, massively synthesizer heavy without sounding artificial. Though I can only understand maybe a third of the lyrics as he sings them. I've always understood "It's no better to be safe than sorry" though. Yep, at least when it comes to romance, which is what they're singing about here.
Whitney Houston -- "Saving All My Love for You" -- October 26, 1985
It's not better to be safe than sorry, but that doesn't mean it's good to be an absolute idiot in matters of romance either. Nor is it good to be a colossal jerk. That's what the narrator is here -- the "you" she's singing to is married. And he won't leave his wife and children, though he used to say he would. The lyrics seem to say that's she's accepted the situation, but the way Houston sings it, I think the narrator's trying to get him to leave his wife -- and children -- for her still. This makes sense, as it puts some kind of passion and sense of story into the song, which without Houston's singing would not be there. The narrator certainly never acknowledges that what she's doing is wrong in the slightest iota. This song could be done in a way that works. But it's a completely sincere ballad. So, no. I despise the narrator, I despise the man she's singing to more, and the whole thing leaves me feeling gross.
Stevie Wonder -- "Part Time Lover" -- November 2, 1985
No one's thinking anyone's gonna leave anyone in this one. It's about cheating, and the thrill of it, but then at the end, he's found out his wife's cheating on him too. "I guess that two can play the game/ Of part-time lovers." This kind of funk groove is one way you make a song like this. It makes the whole thing sexy and fun, and the lyrics also work even beyond that ending, because they acknowledge it's wrong.
Jon Hammer -- "Miami Vice Theme" -- November 9, 1985
My parents didn't watch Miami Vice. And then I never felt like watching it in re-runs when I got older. I don't recognize this song. It's an energetic instrumental, but there's so much going on, I keep trying to figure out if there's a main musical idea anywhere. Nope. Just lots and lots of synth. Headache-inducing.
Starship -- "We Built This City" -- November 16, 1985
Blech. This song sounds both unfinished and overproduced somehow. The chorus seems designed to be catchy with absolute ruthlessness by people who didn't really care, and no one involved even seems to want to bother to fake it.
Phil Collins & Marilyn Martin -- "Separate Lives" -- November 30, 1985
This is supposed to be heart-wrenchingly sad. Well, it does tank my dopamine, but that's not what a good sad song does. A good sad song makes you feel better. This one makes me need to turn on something high-energy after about 30 seconds, before I sink into bleakness. It's aggressively boring.
Mr. Mister -- "Broken Wings" -- December 7, 1985
This was one of the first songs I recorded from the radio. On my pink tape deck/radio that was a sort of a mini boom box. I've always had my own tape player since I can remember, but that was a definite upgrade from the Sesame Street one. I was 9 then, so getting more seriously into music and developing my own taste intentionally, rather than simply absorbing what was happening around me.
Anyway, the song. It's about a relationship in trouble, and he wants to stay with her. To me it sounds like she has been so seriously hurt (and not by him), that she can't trust anyone, and he's laying himself on the line for her. That has spoken to me deeply ever since I first heard the song as a child. Moving on to the music: While the lyrics are repetitive, the music is not, which is what makes the song so good. It's a beautiful song.
Lionel Richie -- "Say You, Say Me" -- December 21, 1985
I look forward to Lionel Richie no longer being on the charts. This song was on the soundtrack of some movie I've never heard of. I wish I'd never heard of the song. Totally artificial glop.
BEST OF 1985: "Don't You Forget About Me" by Simple Minds  WORST OF 1985: "We Built This City" by Starship

Fanfic Friday
A little late because of holiday obligations, and I was waiting to see if an anonymous exchange would flip to reveal the authors in time (now included below).
This week, I got some surprisingly good health news, so even though my holidays have been a bit of a shitshow, that was a nice treat. I’m also buckling down to prewrite some of the series and things I’ve been working on behind the scenes for 2021.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Details below the cut.
Posted:
Two Letters (Bobbi/Hunter): Catering AU, bickering and fluff, and ex sex. These are a few of my favourite things.
Put A Bow On It (Bruce/Darcy): Sugary sweet Tasersmash fluff topped with a kiss!
Wrapped In Red (Bucky/Wanda): Bucky and Wanda will do ANYTHING to avoid sitting at the singles’ table.
The Sound Of You And Me chapter four (Bucky/Wanda): I am weak for a piano playing scene and this chapter is so self indulgent. Not sorry about it.
Hand Me Downs final chapter (Bucky/Darcy): There was no way this wasn’t going to be a happy ending. Do you know me? Do you know how much I love fluff?
Little Lumberjack (Ted/Alexis): Ted is a sweetheart and a gentleman... and maybe not in the best of shape by the end of this fic. But he tried, OK?
Mistletoe (Steve/Darcy): Written especially for @typhoidmeri for the Shieldshock Fic Exchange. She handed me a beautiful plot prompt and I just did my best to bring it to life.
I’ll Be Home For Christmas (Brock/Darcy): Yes, I’m back again with Taserbones for @Meilan_firaga for Darcyverse Secret Santa. This baby can fit so many holiday tropes in it.
Coming Up:
December 26: Accidentally On Purpose (Darcy/Steve/Bucky): Listen, I’ve been dying for an excuse to write WinterShieldShock for ages. Featuring some dance lessons and flirty chivalry.
December 28: Because It’s You I See (Clint/Darcy): An 8k one-shot that I wrote in like a week on a crazy binge-writing session? In the words of Felicia: Who even am I?
(tentative) December 31: White Flag chapter one (Sam/Darcy): Another pairing I’ve been dying to do. This is a three-parter, and I’m not sure of the update schedule yet, but I’m working on it!
And a super advanced preview:
January 12: My Way Home Is Through You chapter one (Bucky/Darcy): Did I push my Endgame fix-it in favour of a 1940s time travel fic? Yes. Does it feature 1940s Bucky Barnes and a very confused Darcy Lewis? Yes. Did I say a big ‘fuck you’ to Civil War and Endgame in the process? Absolutely. This will be somewhere between 5-10 chapters and I honestly can’t stop thinking about it. Felicia, this is all your fault.
And that’s the end of my holiday fics! I do have one outstanding prompt (sorry!) that will be carried over into July (Christmas in July), when I’ll bring back my Hallmark bingo card and see if I can’t check off a few more.
Thank you to everyone who’s been reading/requesting. Hope you’re enjoying the fic.

The most interesting of uninteresting races - Sakhir GP preview
A couple of weeks ago, it felt that F1’s final triple header of 2020 was going to be a quiet affair. After Mercedes and Hamilton wrapped up their respective titles, it seemed that the main story for the 3 races in the Levant would be the battle for 3rd in the constructors’ championship. Yes, there were still races to be won, and some seats up for grabs, and the Perez-Albon axis would be a focal point for pundits, but it felt very much like the twilight of the season.
Well, F1 comes at you fast (literally), and even more so in 2020, it seems. On Sunday, Hamilton’s 11th win of the season was overshadowed by Grosjean’s massive crash and the ensuing conversation over safety and what went well and not so well. After the race, it felt like this topic and Grosjean’s recovery would be the main story of the week, but then, for the third time, a driver caught COVID, and this time, it was the champion-elect.
Lewis Hamilton tested negative three times during the race weekend, but started feeling symptoms on Monday morning, and had two positive results on that day. The announcement the following day sent the F1 world into a spin. It would be the first time since Brazil 2006 that an F1 grid would not include Hamilton, and, given his dominance throughout the season, any race without him suddenly becomes a much more open and intriguing affair.
But even more crucial than that was the question on everyone’s mind: with Hamilton ruled out of (at least) the Sakhir GP, who would step in for him at Mercedes?
The reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne was the most obvious choice. Already acquainted with the team and the car (at least via simulator), the Belgian was wrapping up preseason testing for the upcoming Formula E season and was already planned to fly to Bahrain anyway. But the Mercedes hierarchy had him as a number two choice, as this was a major opportunity for them to test the heir apparent to the team in their actual car.
It is no secret that Mercedes reached out to Williams to enquire about the availability of George Russell for 2021, before making the decision of giving Bottas another 1-year extension. The Grove-based team told them they did not wish to release him from his contract for next year, but there was no doubt that Russell was a strong candidate to take one of the Silver Arrows seats for 2022. And if Hamilton decides to continue into the new F1 era that will start in that season, then it is Bottas’ seat that will be, once again, in question.
This was, then, the perfect opportunity for Mercedes to evaluate their protege in an actual race environment, and have him go toe-to-toe with his main rival for that seat. I don’t think anyone in the team is expecting Russell to beat Bottas outright, but he won’t need to either. If he stays close to the Finn in the timesheets and impresses the team with work ethics and commitment, he will be taking a huge step towards securing that dream move.
Bottas, on the other hand, will be perfectly aware of this, which puts some additional pressure on him to perform. He cannot afford to be beaten by his one-weekend teammate; that would absolutely seal his fate for 2022. Ultimately, there might not be much that he can do to help his cause. Even if he does win the race and keeps Russell comfortably at bay, it will be the youngster’s performance that will be of more interest to the team. If Russell does well enough, there is nothing Bottas can do.
It is crazy that a race at the tail end of the 2020 season can have such deep ramifications into the 2022 season, but this has been a crazy year in more ways than one. This one-off race in a crazy layout of the Sakhir circuit will see two debutants and a stand-in for the champion-elect, while two drivers recover from health issues. There will be plenty of interest to see how all these permutations will affect the weekend, and what these out-of-place drivers can achieve. And, most importantly, we might even see the Mercedes 2022 line-up take shape.
Talking points
•  Another driver under pressure to perform this weekend will be Latifi, whose seat is not in danger but that will be left to look silly if he is beaten by his teammate. Also, the shuffle up front puts even more pressure on Albon, who will be expected to beat his good friend George, since he is much more accustomed to his car. As if he needed any more pressure on him.
•  Stoffel Vandoorne ended up being the big loser in the Mercedes decision. The Belgian driver just does not seem to get a lucky break with F1: after two years at a McLaren close to its lowest point, he doesn’t even get the chance to fulfil his role as reserve driver for the best team ever in the history of the sport. Perhaps it is best that he focuses his career elsewhere, as his FE car also seems to be capable of fighting for wins and getting into the title fight.
•  Wednesday morning saw most of the big announcements of the week in terms of driver swaps, but the best news of that day was Grosjean’s release from hospital. After that enormous scare, it was fantastic to see him walk out with a huge smile on his face, and hearing him say that he wanted to return for the Abu Dhabi GP, for what will be his F1 swan song. Absolutely nothing will beat seeing him back on the grid for that.
•  His vacated seat at Haas, as well as Russel’s vacated seat at Williams, will provide the opportunity to two drivers to have their debut in F1. Pietro Fittipaldi will stand in for the Frenchman at Haas; the Brazilian is the team’s reserve driver and spent the year in the garage with them, so will be well acquainted with the team members and their procedures. The same can be said for Jack Aitken, who will run for Williams. After an unlucky run with Campos in this F2 season, this will be a richly deserved reward.
•  Fittipaldi’s run with Haas will not represent an opportunity for him to stake a claim on one of their seats for next year, as the team announced their line-up, confirming the rumours that had been circulating for a few weeks. Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin, respectively first and third in the F2 championship, will be driving in F1 for the American team. The return of the Schumacher name was expected and it will be great to see Mick test his talent at the highest level. He hasn’t blitzed the field this season, but rather has impressed with consistency and regularity, traits that bode well for a future champion.
Mazepin arrives with the tag of paid driver - which isn’t in itself incorrect, but is one that glues to the skin of the driver and is incredibly difficult to remove, regardless of results. The Russian has been slowly climbing the table in F2, having won 2 races. However, his general demeanour and attitude, on and off the track, leaves many question marks over this decision. His father brings significant backing to the team, but if he doesn’t clean his act the negative impact of his behaviour can be costly for Haas.
•  I am truly excited to see a completely different layout this weekend. The current calendar (2020 exceptions aside) features tracks with so many similarities, it is truly refreshing to see a short, ultra-quick layout, just to shake things up. Qualifying risks being quite the mess, and lapped cars will be a nuisance to the leaders, but I, for one, can’t wait to see them blast around Bahrain’s outer loop.

Belgian Grand Prix Preview
The summer break has flown by and the 2nd instalment of a fascinating F1 season is set to begin! Then, as if that wasn’t enough, the forecast for this weekend is all over the place, which could really throw a wrench into the weekend’s racing.
Yet again, the gap between Red Bull and Mercedes is negligible at Spa, with Mercedes flying down the straights, and losing out in the corners. The timing sheets suggest that this worked better for Red Bull, however Max had a cleaner qualifying simulation, so there is no clear read of who is ahead. The other thing to factor in, is that if we do get rain, the higher downforce on the Red Bull could be a huge advantage, which may be something for Mercedes to consider.
Despite that point, I get the feeling that Mercedes is in the best position to win here, whether it will be wet or dry. Part of that may be due to momentum from the last race, where Mercedes had a better time of it really. This was compounded at the end of FP2, when Max crashed his car doing race simulations. This shouldn’t harm him too much, but won’t help him either. The one thing I am looking forward to, is the first lap run up to Les Combes on Sunday, which could be what decides the race winner, and could write a new chapter in the story between Lewis and Verstappen.
McLaren and Ferrari were more quiet than usual today, I am less concerned about McLaren as they do sandbag a bit normally on a Friday. As for Ferrari though, the 2 long straights could be massive hurdles for them, to try and score some points here. They will probably be hoping that it rains over the next two days, to add a curve ball into the mix. Leclerc made another error in FP2, as he slid into the barriers late on in the session.
McLaren I would expect to be in the top 10, although there are some other teams out there who are looking quick. If we have been kind on Ricciardo up until now, this is where he needs to be on pace with his teammate, as whilst he hasn’t been terrible before, he hasn’t matched the calibre we expected of him either. As for Norris, another 5th is on the cards, and if chaos ensues, a podium could be very possible.
Alpine and Aston Martin looked very strong today, however we have seen previously that come to nothing this year. Looking at previous form, Alpine may be better in qualifying trim, whereas Aston Martin could snatch points off them in the race. The Alpine has looked a bit unstable too today, especially through the Fagnes Chicane, which would be better over a single lap run. The news of Alonso staying at Alpine is no surprise, he has excelled on returning to the sport, and really pressurised his younger teammate.
Alpha Tauri may be similar in performance to Alpine, as Gasly has been mighty on a Saturday, but lacked the consistency to stay there in the races. Tsunoda, I hope has taken some time to understand where he should expect himself to be in the pecking order, and how to avoid overdriving through the 2nd half of the year. If he can do that, this could be the start of a promising run for him.
Kimi crashing in the pitlane could be the sign of a tough 12 races for them coming up, as their car is only able to get some points in really crazy races. As for the drivers, Kimi looks done with the sport really, and in my view, whilst Giovinazzi has impressed on occasions, I am not sure it is enough to stay in F1.
I don’t think that Williams is done with scoring points yet this year. Russell had a couple of opportunities to bag points before Hungary, and more could come up this year, so a great year could get even better for them. George’s future is still unclear, and the mood in the press conference suggested to me that Valtteri was happy, so could be staying with the team, which would be a shame in my view. Latifi may have grabbed a huge number of points last time out, however given his usual gap to Russell, his future is not safe by any means.
Finally, Haas just need a clean rest of the season, and build confidence in their drivers, as they develop what will hopefully be a better car for 2022. It would be bonkers if they got any points this year, as they have never really troubled any other teams, so consistent pace must be their aim.
F1 is back, and the pressure and tension are going to go from 0 to 100 very quickly, as battles up and down the field spark into life once again. I just hope we get as much drama as we saw in the first 11 races of 2021!
