Dancing with the Stars Season 31 Week 1: Same Show, Different Platform
Hey everyone! We are back for season 31 on Disney+. We have Conrad Green back as executive producer and Tyra has a new cohost, Alfonso!. Judges are still the same, but they never change. Now a lot of you have been asking my for some thoughts about all of the changes. I guess I'll start out by addressing those. That seems to be appropriate. Let's start with Conrad.
I cannot believe that I'm saying this, but it's nice to have him back. It's nice to hear the full name of both the pro and the celeb. I'm feel the energy of the show has shifted back to what it once was. It was going down a weird path for awhile and Monday night felt familiar and comforting. I love the intro pose before the dance. It's a modernized version of what they used to do back in the day and I missed that so much. I do wish he could've brought the stairs back, but we can't have it all.
For the hosts, I think Tyra and Alfonso were fantastic together. They already know each other and have worked together in the past (Fresh Prince), so it wasn't awkward for them to bounce off of one another. As someone said, Tyra seemed to be a lot more relaxed now that she didn't have to shoulder the responsibility of hosting the entire show. And Alfonso is just a natural. There were a few issues but that was backroom stuff and I'll talk about that a little later.
I enjoyed the troupe dancing. It was a nice and welcome break from the main events of the show.
Now, I think we have to talk about the lack of commercials. The reason that I am so late getting this up is because so much happened in 2 hours with no break that I was kinda over DWTS for the night. Tyra and Alfonso did well, but that was a marathon for them. They literally had no chance to just sit and breathe. At least commercials give some reprieve to the hosts (whether it was Tom, Samantha, Brooke, Erin, Lisa, Tyra or Alfonso). We also saw the control room seemed to mess up a few times with scoring and getting all that updated. Even though they could make that mistake at any time, it is important for them to have that down time so that they can update things to feed to Tyra as the show goes on. I'm not sure how they can rectify this, but something needs to be done to give everyone a breather. The pace of Monday night is not sustainable for an entire season.
And finally, the week 1 elimination. I didn't like it. I think it was the right couple that left, but I wish it had been week 2 or maybe even give us one special results show on Tuesday. Make it a two day premiere. That being said, I liked that Jason and Peta had time to say good-bye and the cast could go hug them and all of that. Okay, now recap time.
Jordin and Brandon- Cha-cha (Score=26)- This was really good. I thought it should've been straight 7s. And upon my second viewing, I was right. It was a very strong week 1 dance and a great way to start the night. Jordin has some really great lines and her technique is actually quite good when she hits everything correctly. I think she was a little uncomfortable. There were moments where it felt like she wasn't quite finishing all the moves right in the middle of the dance. Things started to blend. But nonetheless, a great dance.
Sam and Cheryl- Foxtrot (Score=20)- I thought this dance was fine. It wasn't particularly bad. It wasn't all that great either. It was passable. I feel like the song probably caused them more problems. It didn't lend itself well to the smoothness of a foxtrot. Sam has some potential though. That is the one thing I got from this dance. And based on the other 20s, it probably could've gotten a point or two higher.
Heidi and Artem- Cha-cha (Score=24)- I was surprised at how well Heidi handled this dance. I wasn't really expecting much because I don't know much about her and she's not a celeb celeb. But she did really well. Her legs are really nice. Her arms are pretty good too. I do think she needs to do a better job of projecting when she dances and really hitting her moves harder. I'm starting to realize that Artem has the same issues with his partners that Tony used to have.
Daniel and Britt- Tango (Score=27)- Daniel really shocked me. The confidence that he exuded was kinda hot, not gonna lie. And he handled Britt's choreo really well. His arm kinda gets funky and his legs need some more work. The potential is there and like Jordin, I think he probably should've had straight 7s.
Jessie and Alan- Cha-cha (Score=20)- Well, this dance was a mess. Jessie had basically no technique. Her legs and feet were atrocious. But she knows how to perform and mostly stayed on time. I'm not sure how much potential is there, but we shall see as the season goes on. Alan might make some miracle happen with her. I mean I though Lauren Alaina was a no hoper when she was on.
Teresa and Pasha- Tango (Score=20)- As many of you know, Teresa was one of the people I was excited to see. But this dance was a bit of a let down for me. I could tell she was extremely nervous and dancing definitely doesn't seem to come easy for her. However, I see something there and I want Pasha to tap into it. What she did wasn't bad (other than her frame). It's just what she didn't do. The Housewives fanbase really doesn't translate well to DWTS so I'm not shocked that she ended up in the bottom 2. I think the only Housewife that was pretty much safe up until the week she left was Nene.
Wayne and Witney- Cha-cha (Score=29)- Just as I expected, Wayne was explosive. Witney gave him a great dance and it was so amazing to watch. I do think he needs to clean up some of his technique, but it was great. I'm shocked he didn't get more than one 8. I thought it for sure deserved at least two. I'm really excited for these two. And I don't think I've said this before, but Witney is definitely one of my favorite pros. She's such a star and so good at what she does.
Cheryl and Louis- Cha-cha (Score=21)- First of all, welcome back Louis. Now, Cheryl might've been my biggest surprise of the night. I 100% agreed with CAI. I think she could've handled more than Louis gave her. They played it a bit safe, but she definitely has the goods and she can move. And knowing Louis, I know that's a critique he wants to hear. As for the dance itself, it was good. I wanted more hip action but she really did everything well. I really wanna see her do a ballroom dance. She's got the elegance and lyricism to pull off a gorgeous dance.
Vinny and Koko- Salsa (Score=17)- First, welcome to the show Koko! Now, the judges were way too harsh on them for this dance. Was it great? No. Was it good? No. But, Vinny has potential. I think the dance actually would've been better if Vinny hadn't been so nervous. He forgot things and he kinda got lost. But he performed it well and there were moments when I saw him hit the moves he was supposed to, when he was supposed to. I think a few things need to happen to help these two out. First, I want Koko to simplify the routines from now on. Vinny is not super skilled, so throwing everything into one dance will not work out for him. It's a rookie mistake, so I understand why she did it. Idk if she is doing this next thing, but I'd like for her to take Vinny to the side at least once before they dance, reassure him and calm him down. He was clearly hyped up when they got out there and he needs to come back down to really get these dances down.
Shangela and Gleb- Salsa (Score=28)- Shangela killed this. This was actually my favorite dance of the night. First of all, this is the best Gleb US choreography that I've seen from him. Shangela also really killed this dance. She was fierce. She was confident. She had rhythm and hips. It was a great time. Now, I need them to reign it back in a little bit. It started to get a little wild from time to time and that will create problems in the future. That's my biggest critique.
Trevor and Emma- Quickstep (Score=21)- Interesting dance. They sold it to us like he was going to be one of the worst dancers ever on DWTS. And then it was actually ok. I'm not sure why that was the case. Now it was kind of wild and there were a lot of technical issues. But it wasn't the disaster they were preparing us for. Again, weird.
Gabby and Val- Jive (Score=28)- The judges gushed over this dance and I found that to be very suspicious. Was it good? Yes. But there were a lot of issues. First, she had Bambi legs going on a little bit. And I also thought that her kicks were lacking. They didn't retract the way that they should've. She can dance though. I definitely think she's gonna be good.
Joseph and Daniella- Jive (Score=23)- Joseph killed this dance. Ain't no way I was expecting him to be this good and light on his feet and flexible, considering how muscular he is. Daniella is an amazing teacher and choreographer. Now, his feet were eyesores and there are some other things. But man, this guy is actually someone that could become a contender.
Jason and Peta- Cha-cha (Score=18)- This just wasn't a good dance. And there was nothing that Jason could've done to save it. He's just not a good dancer and that's okay. As soon as I saw him counting out loud, I knew he was gonna be in trouble. That is never a good sign for anyone. He was eliminated though, so we don't have to worry about fixing any of his problems anymore.
Selma and Sasha- Viennese Waltz (Score=28)- This dance was beautiful. It was a true moment. I really loved it and Selma did such a great job with everything. I enjoyed Sasha's choreography. It was good. I do worry about how Latin will be for her, but I feel like her ballroom dances will always be really nice to watch.
Charli and Mark- Cha-cha (Score=32)- Welcome back Mark! This dance was good. Really good. I expected that though. I don't have much to really say though. I liked it and I like Charli more than I thought I would. I would like to tell everyone though to be prepared for a "shocking" elimination involving her. She's young and her fanbase is young. They're usually fickle. Not sure how it's gonna be on Disney+, but you all need to prepare yourselves. She's got "shocking elimination" written all over her and I do not want to sit here and talk about ad nauseum if it does happen. I just want to get that out the way.
So that's it. This took forever to write. I think I'm going to figure out a different way to do this next week. Recapping 15 dances is not fun. This is another reason why I didn't want more than 13 couples in a season. It makes blogging about it a much more tedious task. Let me know you all's thoughts and I will talk to you soon!

Post WWII Hollywood: Changing markets and government pressure. (Franco Morgante)
Hollywood faced many changes with the end of WWII. For example, new motion picture markets began springing up that directly competed with the movie industry, particularly the all-new television. The effect the TV had on the movie industry is explored in the by Jon Lewis, where he writes “During the 1930s movie tickets had amounted to 20 percent of the average American’s recreational expenses. By 1950, however, Hollywood was able to snare only 12 percent. Television was part of the reason, of course. Between 1947 and 1948 ownership of TV sets increased by more than ten times to 175,000 sets” (Lewis, page 68). Television made it much more convenient to watch movies as people wouldn’t have to leave their homes for their entertainment. Which was especially helpful as people had begun moving away from urban areas and into the suburbs, which also didn’t help the movie industry.  TV was also the reason why more color films were being made. To quote an article from Gorham A. Kindem “Between 1966 and 1970, color's percentage of all U.S. produced features increased from 54% to 94%, and almost all technological, economic, and aesthetic factors favored the use of color cinematography for feature films, as television's conversion to color favorably affected economic and aesthetic conditions” (Kindem, page 30). Due to this increased competition, film companies continued to be controlling what kinds of films were being made so that they wouldn’t end up as financial disasters. But that wasn’t the only reason why the content was getting censored.
With the start of the 1950’s America had entered the Red Scare, which was a massive fear that communists had secretly subverted America’s governmental and cultural institutions. This fear spread to Hollywood as the FBI suspected that there were numerous actors with communist sympathies. This is explored in an article by Athan G. Theoharis, where he writes “The FBI's interest in suspected Communist influence in the making of motion pictures dated from August 1942, when FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover ordered Richard Hood (the Special Agent in Charge, SAC, of the FBI's Los Angeles field office) to prepare a "comprehensive report indicating Communist infiltration and control of the motion picture industry” (Theoharis, page 416). With the FBI breathing down Hollywood’s neck, many actors had to go out of their way to prove to the public that they weren’t communists. However, there were some actors that refused to confirm or deny their communist affiliations as part of their free speech rights. But this led to those actors getting heavily punished by the industry. To quote an article from Paul Thomas “The studio heads could either resist HUAC and refuse to collaborate with people whose interference they resented—in which case they would risk accusations of disloyalty and “anti-Americanism”; or they could aid and abet HUAC and collaborate in a witch hunt” (Thomas, page 1). Hollywood had been doing its best to purge any potential communist sympathies, which led to a new age of censorship in Hollywood. This control led to some actors resisting Hollywood’s control and would make their films regardless of the opinions of movie moguls. One of those directors was Billy Wilder who did his best to make his films feel distinct from the other Hollywood films. To quote an article by Stephen Farber “Wilder is a writer-director who has regularly been in control of his projects from the script stage on. Among the films produced during the assembly line years of Holly- wood, Wilder stands out because it is not necessary to perform conjuring tricks to identify his person” (page 1). Even though Wilder had to go against the grain of Hollywood, it led to his films having their own distinct look and feel to them and didn’t care if it didn’t conform with the Hollywood style.
Overall, Hollywood after WWII had multiple outside influences that forced them to implement massive changes to the industry so that it wouldn’t become stagnant with other forms of entertainment.

Adam N. Schuster Residence, St. Joseph MO
An 1880s residence in the Hall Street Historic District
Built: 1881
Architect: Edmond J. Eckel (Eckel and Mann)
Address: 703 Hall Street, St. Joseph MO 64501
Growing up in St. Joseph, Missouri, in the 1960s and 70s, my main source of fascination was the city's historic architecture. A major gateway to the West during the 1800s, the town once rivaled larger cities in importance, and great fortunes were amassed there in the wholesale, outfitting, and mercantile industries.
The fortunes accumulated by "Old St. Joseph" were notoriously never invested in the city's growth; they were put into bank accounts where they preserved the power and influence of the Men Who Made St. Joseph the City Worth While (the title of a local history), while making the city a hermetically sealed place where nothing changed, and no outside influence or investment could penetrate.
It was a strange atmosphere in which to grow up, in a town where time stood still, and a conservative, repressive, and airless atmosphere prevailed.
On my many bike rides around the city as a teenager, my favorite areas were Museum Hill, just north of the downtown area, and the Hall Street historic district, just to the west. These areas displayed an opulence and a sense of past glory that hinted at St. Joseph's glorious past, yet a past that stood still, transfixed in a time warp from the turn of the 20th century.
Thanks to injections of cash, some of these mansions have been not just preserved but restored to their once-grand glory. The Adam N. Schuster house, pictured below in views from the Historic American Buildings Survey (Library of Congress) is one such mansion, a building that captured and help my interest from my teen years onward. Variously operated as a B&B and private residence, the mansion has survived into the 2020s in a good state of preservation.
In about 1985, when Linda Farber, its then owner, disposed of the property, I attended an estate sale in the house over a period of two or three weekends. Among my purchases were a painted folding screen, a pair of cast brass Chinese candelabra, a signed fan photograph by movie actress Norma Talmadge , a Royal Rudolstadt porcelain ewer, and an oil portrait of an unknown woman. These items were all disposed of years later before my move to China to begin a new life as a teacher.
The Schuster Mansion remains the most well-known local historic residence, along with the Wyeth-Tootle Mansion on Museum Hill, for many years the site of the St. Joseph Museum, and now a combination museum / events center.
Below are photographs from the HABS survey of 703 Hall Street, along with a video about the house from a Kansas City TV channel. The interiors are quite striking, and hopefully the houses' current furnishings are in keeping with its grand past.

Description of the house from the HABS Report
Toni M. Prawl's 1994 dissertation on architect Edmond Jacques Eckel [E.J. Eckel (1845-1934): The Education of a Beaux-Arts Architect and His Practice in Missouri] confirms Eckel and Mann (formed 1880) as responsible for the Schuster residence's design. Of interest is the mention of Stigers and Boettner as builders. Eckel had been in partnership with Francis R. Boettner until 1979, after Lewis Snell Stigers had supposedly retired. I will need to do some fact checking on this chronology.
The following photographs are from the HABS report, Library of Congress collection.

Schuster (1881) vs. Wyeth-Tootle (1879) mansions: Two Victorian Italianates, symmetrical and regular, with projecting porches and bay windows. They differ only in the heavier cornice and prominent roof on the Schuster, and the extra attic story on the Wyeth-Tootle, not to mention the asymmetrically-placed tower at the left, an influence of castles on the Rhine.
Here are some screencaps from the video above:

Interestingly, I haven't located any interior photographs of the Schuster residence online, other than the HABS images. Other Hall Street interiors have been illustrated on sites such as Zillow, but not this one. If anyone knows of such images, please contact me.

Let’s Talk Dancing with the Stars Blog Post #4
Since The Bachelorette has stopped premiering and both girls seem to have found their happy ending (Gabby with Erich & Rachael with her own self love), I have decided to talk to you guys about another great show…
Dancing with the Stars!
I am such a huge fan of this show, and I was so excited when I found out former Bachelorette Gabby Windey was going to be on this upcoming season. So let me give you the rundown on how Dancing with the Stars works if you haven't watched it yet.
Dancing with the Stars consists of 15 professional dancers and 15 celebrity dancers. The show first premiered on ABC in 2005 and has been a huge hit for 30 seasons now. Out of these professional dancers, some of them come in brand new and some dancers have been there since the show started! Each week, the dancing duos get assigned a specific category of dance (ex: Ramba, Quick step) and follow the theme night that happens every week as well.
This season I want to follow along with you guys and keep you updated on the great dances that these pro/celebrity duos create together! This season consists of:
-Gabby Windey dancing with professional Val Chmerkovskiy
-Charli D’Amelio dancing with professional Mark Ballas
-Heidi D’Amelio dancing with professional Artem Chigvintsev
-Wayne Brady dancing with professional Witney Carson
-Jordin Sparks dancing with professional Brandon Armstrong
-Joseph Baena dancing with professional Daniella Karagach
-Selma Blair dancing with professional Sasha Farber
-Sam Champion dancing with professional Cheryl Burke
-Jessie James Decker dancing with professional Alan Berston
-Trevor Donovan dancing with professional Emma Slater
-Daniel Durant dancing with professional Britt Stewart
-Teresa Giudice dancing with professional Pasha Kovalev
-Vinny Guadagnino dancing with professional Koko Iwasaki
-Cheryl Ladd dancing with professional Louis Van Amstel
-Jason Lewis dancing with professional Peta Murgatroyd
-Shangela dancing with professional Gleb Savchenko
The first episode started with a lot of energy and fun in the ballroom. Host Tyra Banks has been on the show since Season 29 with co-host Alfonso Ribeiro who is a former actor and winner of Season 19 of DWTS. Tyra is the main host on the dance floor while Alfonso is up top of the ballroom with the dancers while they collect their scores from the judges.
Judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tomioli, Derek Hough, and head judge Len Goodman are returning judges from past seasons. Carrie Ann Inaba is a Dancer and Choreographer, and Bruno Tomioli is a Film, Music Video, and Theatre Choreographer. Derek Hough is an Emmy winning Choreographer and Six-Time DWTS Champion ,while head judge Len Goodman is a Professional Ballroom Judge. Along with the 0-10 numbers each judge can give, the viewers also have their say in voting to control the ending elimination. Season 31 is now streaming for the first time this year on Disney+.
On premiere week we got to learn the background of all of the celebrity dancers that were featured on this new season. The premiers theme was focused on the celebrities favorite party song to get down to.
Our girl Gabby Windey with partner Val danced the jive to her favorite song “As it Was” by Harry Styles. They ended with the third highest score of 28/40. Not too bad for week one as the judges score everyone pretty low on night one. Linked below will be their jive from night one.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsWg8clCqGc
Tik Tok star Charli D’Amelio ended the night in first place after dancing the Cha-Cha with partner Mark Ballas. They danced to “Savage” by Megan Thee Stallion and ended with the top score of the night at 32/40. I will link Charli’s night one winning dance down below!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyV3kZaduwk
In second place was celebrity Actor and Multiple Emmy Award-winning and Grammy Award- nominated Wayne Brady. They received the first “8” of the night from judge Bruno Tomioli! Wayne Brady and partner Witney Carson danced a Cha-Cha to “She’s A Bad Mama Jama” by Carl Carlton. The total judges scored a total of 29/40. Linked down below will be the duo's awesome Cha-Cha!

After all 15 couples do their dance and get scored, the show ends with a couple going home on night one. The judges were super tight with scoring on night one with most judges handing out “5’s” for most couples. This was a very low scoring night for most couples! Star Jason Lewis, who is well-known for his role in “Sex and the City” was the first celebrity star who was kicked off the show!
Tune in next week so we can recap week 2 of Dancing with the Stars together!

I really like drawing him
I’m glad they let Burn be nice and cute for an episode before letting him go full villain.

Dancing with the Stars Season 28 Week 2: Again, Let’s Get This Over With
No cutesy intro. I just wanna get this on with.
James and Emma- Cha-cha (Score=20)- It was a little rough at the very beginning. But after the start, they pulled it together and really got it going. James definitely fixed his feet from last week. They weren’t perfect but they were much improved. Len is full of crap. But the score makes sense I guess.
Sailor and Val- Rumba (Score=18)- I hate this song so much. Anyway, Sailor has a lot of potential. But I agree with the judges here. Sailor doesn’t fully commit to the dance. So you have these moments where she’s really good and then these other moments where you’re like “huh?” I’m still gonna give her some slack just because she she’s just over a week into the experience. But next week, the handicap is gonna be lifted for me.
Ray and Cheryl- Foxtrot (Score=15)- Yikes. Okay first of all, Ray’s facial expressions scare me. I mean they always have, but they were on 100 this week *shivers*. There were tons of mistakes though and it lacked the characteristics of a foxtrot. It wasn’t smooth, that frame was not good and he was heavy footed. He had fun, so it wasn’t painful to watch. It was fun. BUT, there were so many problems that could not be overlooked.
Ally and Sasha- Viennese Waltz (Score=20)- Okay first of all, I was one of those people that said Ally was the worst dancer in the group. I don’t really feel bad about it though because the worst was between her and canola (and really, was she actually bullied or did people just laugh at her not trying). It just depended on the choreo. And that’s okay! She was always the best singer. As for the dance, it was really pretty. And Ally had a great frame. I liked it. That’s all I can say.
Miss Mary and  Brandon- Cha-cha (Score=15)- I love love love her! There were a lot of mistakes. But she did not let it show at all. Miss Mary does have some really nice leg action when she does it correctly. I was really shocked by that.
Lauren and Gleb- Paso Doble (Score=19)- Mm. Okay. So. Umm. It wasn’t bad. But it was such a strange dance. The choreography was really weird. Her shoulders were super high. The shaping was strange. She looked unsure of herself until the skirt came off. And she was a hair behind the beat. But when she hit, she really hit. And Lauren has great lines. So I’m not sure if Gleb can really do what he needs to with her (doubtful since he’s squandered the potential of literally every other partner that he’s ever gotten on this show), but she’s got a ton of potential.
Karamo and Jenna- Quickstep (Score=19)- Okay so this was a pretty good dance. The performance was definitely there. But, he was kinda hunched over and the footwork was messy at times. I still liked it and don’t think it deserved a 5.
Kate and Pasha- Foxtrot (Score=21)- This was a very Derek-esque dance. I loved it. Kate did an extremely good job. I want her to smooth things out now because she’s definitely learning the technique really well. And I need ln to stop taking shots at Karamo. I don’t even like him like that, but if he don’t cut this shit out.
Kel and Witney- Samba (Score=20)- Kel definitely fixed a lot of those strange quirks from last week. This was a really good samba for it to only be week 2. Everything was so much cleaner and Kel looked way more confident and sure of himself.
Lamar and Peta- Salsa (Score=12)- This was leaps and bounds better than last week. Lamar is not a great dancer, but he tries and he had fun this time around. And I’m glad that the comments weren’t brutal this time around.
Hannah and Alan- Viennese Waltz (Score=24)- Yeah. This was the best dance of the night. It was smooth. It was clean. Her lines were gorgeous. That frame was so so good. The technique was great. I could tell her nerves were under control this week. I don’t have anything else to say. It was really good.
Elimination
So I hate this new voting thing. It’s stupid. Anyway Miss Mary and Ray were in jeopardy. And Bruno and Len voted to save Ray. Makes no sense to me. Miss Mary is the better dancer of the two. And I actually feel like she has the ability to get much better than Ray. Ray just does not move all that gracefully. So wrong decision. And I’m mad. Let me know what you all think and hopefully I come back next week (because my patience is already at like .5 and it’s only week 2).
