Thanks so much for the ask! Let's see...

1- Why do you like or dislike this character?

I like Theseus because he seems like a good big brother to Newt, loyal to his loved ones, and a good friend. I also love his relationship with Leta. He's fascinating to me, and he clearly has a past with beasts, too, given his interaction with the qilin in the deleted scene. I wish he got more screen time and backstory. It especially fascinates me that his school years overlapped with Albus and Aberforth. I think he's the perfect balance for Newt- You could see their dynamic begin to peek through in SOD.

2- If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing this character? What's something you don't like?

I have written Theseus before, actually. So, hmm... I like getting into the man himself. What's behind the armor he wears, for him to genuinely show his emotions. I tried to achieve that in one of my fics. He's a an Auror and a hugger, but what else is he? How does he cope with all the hardships dealt with him? I like trying to get into that, and also tying him into the background of other things, like he fought alongside Percival and Jacob's brother during the war.

As for what I don't like- Overly chipper, I-hug-everyone-within-range-every-two-seconds, and don't-miss-Leta-even-a-little Theseus. This guy has depth, it needs to be acknowledged. I also read a fic where he kept punching Percival in the crotch to joke with him and say hi and I just... No. Oh, and I also don't like him paired with Tina! Keep your hands off Newt's woman, Theseus.

25- What was your first impression of this character? How about now?

My first impression was probably Newt's general description- An Auror and a hugger, trying to wrangle his baby brother for messes he keeps making. And that he was a jerk! I also hated how Leta talked about him helping her get a job at the Ministry! Like, no sir, this is a witch, she can get her own job wherever the hell she likes, thank you. Doesn't need to join your 'Ministry family' just because you think it's right. But then I realized because her family history that maybe he HAD to help her, otherwise she couldn't get a job she wanted.

My impression now is that he is a big softy and a good friend and brother. That he bears things so others don't have to, and he keeps his own hurt bottled up because he doesn't want anyone to worry or try to take it on themselves.

rewatched the ministry corridor scene and while it does have its flaws (i.e., what the hell is going on and how come this doesn’t really matter), i really like how they made newt prickly and theseus (awkwardly) affectionate there. I think it’s so interesting. like newt is compassionate and friendly to everyone but a bit standoffish to theseus. theseus is distant from most people and pretty reserved but affectionate towards newt. the contradictions!

like i know i write them with a bagful of problems that complicates this, and this scene was also charged by the credence discussion—but hey, let’s pretend for a moment it’s just set neutrally, and forgive me for writing my own subtext that’s actually not subtext.

I love prickly newt and affectionate theseus.

in short, I like the idea that maybe newt just doesn’t like theseus very much at that point, because i sort of relate to placing distance between myself and other people for no tangible reason. it feels like such a good character flaw. being sweet and compassionate but also just that little bit defensive. and even more interesting for newt’s psychology if it’s not a cut and dry situation and perhaps it’s even a little arbitrary, rather than super deep. like maybe he just doesn’t want to be around theseus, he just wants to leave; it’s not because he has a history where he hates theseus or because he loves leta. it’s just that he doesn’t like theseus in that moment, even though theseus is (according to david heyman, which you’d have to squint to see) finding middle ground. like maybe theseus is doing all the things that are technically right, but newt is just being prickly because at that moment, he /is/ prickly.

I feel like a core thing in their relationship is a certain amount of irrationality because of the distance. like newt pushes theseus away for /some/ reasons but he also doesn’t know why. and theseus keeps persisting in this very limited way with this somewhat one track mind and still doesn’t /quite/ break out of it. maybe they have many other reasons, but when it comes to a quick interaction, this is just “what happens.” perhaps not because theseus has ever been particularly mean, or newt has ever done whatever that equivalent is back, but just because they’re both so unsure with one another.

idk…i wish i could articulate it better, but i really like it, I don’t know why. I feel somewhat represented by the fact that newt at his core is compassionate and gentle, but doesn’t come across as “nice” all the time when he’s uncomfortable or unsure, and perhaps sometimes that’s just how he is. like maybe newt is being a little “mean” to an observer, because he’s not perfect, but theseus keeps pushing on: because in the end being a /little/ prickly and mean sometimes is /okay/. you can be a cinnamon roll-style character and not always extend eternal love and sunshine to everyone all the time, because it’s hard to work like that.

this part is slightly tangential, but, like, i think i am autistic, and sometimes, even though my family are fine, i can’t bear to talk to them, or anyone at all. i like to think newt has days like that, where he’s snippy and a bit unfair/resentful and quietly prickly and desperate to retreat, but we (and all the characters) love him anyway. :,)

Your mother tasks you with more readings as more customers flow into the shop, but your mind is elsewhere.

She scolds you, but you can’t help it. The woman you saw, Leta, was filled with such anger. You wished you could have helped more, in fact you worry you had only made the situation worse by interacting with Leta.

Who was it that she needed dead so badly?

…

Against your better judgement, you sneak out of bed late that night, and creep down again into the back parlor room. The air is freezing and you shiver despite yourself.

“Leta.” you say her voice quietly.

And she appears, standing before you in an almost solid state. She looks happier now than she did when you first saw her, her eyes a deep brown instead of pools of black.

“Leta, I would like to help you. Can you tell me who is still tying to the living world?”

“I’m dead.” she responds sadly.

“Yes,” you agree, “do you need help in moving to the next plane?”

Her face stretches inhumanly into a frown, but you keep your expression still and compassionate, still uncertain if Leta herself poses a threat to you.

Eventually she nods.

“You have to help him. He’s lost.”

“Who, Leta? Your friends that visited?”

Her hand reaches out suddenly, grasping at yours. It feels like cold air pressing down. “He’s lost. Theseus.”

You nod, gently guiding and sitting the both of you down on a bench. “I will help him in any way I can, Leta.”

She seems placated by this, and removes her hand from where it had grabbed yours. “Thank you.”

You have no idea what she means by any of this, but decide against agitating her further by asking.

She dissipates again into nothingness.

You decide to help.

Wizards are easy enough to track, given the right tools. A few herbs, a binding spell made with the help of the moon, and you’re quickly following after them, a light pull in your veins leading you in the right direction.

They’re resting at an inn near the center of town, standing out even with the bustle of early morning leading people every which way.

You make a beeline for them, ready to demand they accept your help.

From what I've seen online, the major consensus amongst HP fans is that Cursed Child is NOT canon ( and many simply pretend it doesn't exist). I remember when it first came out and was being promoted, both the stage show and the published script, and everyone was really excited for new HP material... until we realised that it just... wasn't canon... at all. Yeah, the idea of Voldemort as presented in the HP novels having any sort of romantic relationship with Bellatrix and having a child is simply ridiculous and certainly just exists as a way for him to have a secret child for reasons of the wacky plot... it's very tween fanfic and also very Disney channel sequel (like the og villains all having kids we never heard about is totally a real Disney channel thing).

I remember it being very clear at the time that it came out that any "pointers" or "ideas" JKR provided to the actual writer of CC must've been the very barest of bones, the tiniest of shards perhaps, because it simply read like a sort of AU fanfiction written by the most casual of fans... which, as I understand, it really was. At the time when it came out, it was pretty clear that she had very little to do with actually writing it, though I suppose more was made later of her 'involvement' to legitimise it. I heard since that someone asked her if it should be considered canon, and she said yes? Not sure how this interaction actually went down as I don't particularly care to look into it (since nothing will change my mind that the AU of CC makes no sense within the context of HP canon and lore and it was probably some kind of marketing tactic in support of the stage play) but as she clearly didn't actually write CC herself and it contradicts many things from the books she did write, I'm pretty happy to continue ignoring its existence.

What do you think of Fantastic Beasts in comparison? Personally, I put Fantastic Beasts in a separate category where I can kind of accept aspects of it as canon expansions of the lore and worldbuilding... I can see JKR's style clearly and the inconsistencies with timelines and certain characters being in places and times they shouldn't be don't bother me as much as the straight up character assassination we see in CC. To put it another way, I think CC feels like it belongs to a totally different IP and was written by a different author (because it was) while FB definitely still exists in Rowling's wizarding world, it's just the timeline is kinda off.

this is interesting context. I think she kind of has to say yes to that question in context, because like... who's going to shill out £150 to see some random dude's AU fanfiction play (if it isn't even good)? of course, JKR's stamp isn't nothing, but even she can't weld extra content into the canon by declaring it so. i see TCC like church ephemera: i'm sure SOMEONE finds it interesting or relevant to what we're doing here, but that doesn't mean it's part of the Bible.

i feel the same way about fantastic beasts, but to a lesser extent. i actually enjoyed the first fantastic beasts movie, i thought it was playful and charming and (with the exception of the dumb polyjuice plot) the perfect way to revive harry potter as a storytelling vehicle. like, yeah, it fucked up by trying to go too big too soon, but if you can remove one (1) subplot or narrative thread and have a solid movie, then as a writer, you've still done okay.

Fantastic Beasts also annoys me because it does feel like harry potter, in terms of tone and mouthfeel. it's got the sauce. it just heinously drops the ball in later installations. in particular, it starts getting nervous about holding the audience's attention and throws stuff in that just wouldn't make it in a natural, organic script — most of the shit from the original series is contrived and ill-suited to the dramatic tenor set by Movie About Funny Man Collecting Magical Animals. (e.g. going back to hogwarts? leta lestrange's secret white father revengeplot triple-rugpull? human nagini?? secret undead dumbledore brother raised by american evangelicals???). i like the idea of it very much. i'm honestly drawn to it as a creative space, because unlike TCC, there is potential there. it's just badly abused.

Movie/TV show ships that I'm thankful for and why

Beast Boy x Raven / Garfield x Rachael: Honestly, Teen Titans Go didn't do it for me when it came to this ship because it was almost too silly and cringe, but the live action (I know, I know, the actors have a HUGE age gap, but when talking about the CHARACTERS) really helped me visualize. It's not just about their romantic chemistry at this point (there's plenty of time for that later), but they already had a connection from the start, and that's incredibly important. They already care so much about each other that setting up their romance might be a little underwhelming tbh. They've already established that Gar has feelings/cares immensely for Rachael, and vice versa. They're also seen cuddling on a couch together, so it's not too far-fetched, you know?

Tina Goldstein x Newt Scamander: Honestly, this is already confirmed endgame. In the Harry Potter movies, it is already written in print that these two are endgame, so watching Fantastic Beasts (that occurs before Harry Potter) is incredibly comforting. These two are honestly my comfort couple, and sometimes I wish I could have what they did. My only ick is that Tina isn't around for the entire third movie? which is a little strange. I miss their quiet interactions and such. I also hate how she became so jealous of Leta so quickly without even checking with Newt... like what? Why? He's so in love with you, can't you tell? (Kudos to Eddie Redmayne for really selling the character) ... Anyway, I could go on. I'm just glad that when it comes to Fantastic Beasts, I don't have to focus so much on the rockiness of everyone's love lives and really focus on the real plot of the movie.

Wylan Van Eck x Jesper Fahey: OML do I really have to explain? Ok first off, MAJOR kudos to the actors (good job Kit and Jack) for having INSANE chemistry onscreen. The secretly insecure on the inside but confident on the outside Jesper Fahey falls in love with the shy but extremely intelligent Wylan Van Ek?? Yes please! These two are also SUCH a comfort couple of mine and I could not stop squealing on the inside when I watched their scenes in Shadow and Bone. They-UGH I can't its so good.

Nina Zenik and Matthias Helvar: I know, I know, in the books it doesn't exactly end well, but I love the Sunshine x Grumpy + Enemies-to-Lovers trope that these two absolutely embody. They teach each other so much and I really really hope Matthias doesn't get kicked off in future seasons.

Kaz Brekker x Inej Ghafa: Ok sooooo they're a little problematic, but that's the point. Let's take a moment to appreciate the fact that Inej says that she'll have him without his gloves, or not at all. I love that her character decides that it's not her job to "fix" Kaz. That's a really overused plotline, where one person fixes the person they love and helps them out of their trauma. Inej understands that Kaz needs to come to terms with his own fears and feelings by himself. I also love that Kaz keeps Inej around just to be in her presence, while she comes back from her adventures to visit to be in his.

May I also add that the entire cast of Shadow and Bone are an absolute VIBE! I love the chemistry they have with each other both on and off screen. I am absolutely in LOVE!

The Eleventh Doctor x Clara: This'll be short but I love how they challenge each other and enjoy each other's company at the same time. I was really sad when he changed faces and didn't end up with Clara. They (the actors I guess too) had insane chemistry and banter, which I personally am a sucker for, and I wish that they had more screen time together.

Daphne Bridgerton x Simon Basset: Again with the banter + friends-to-lovers + Simon's speech to the Queen!!! I wish talked more, you know, incorporate the open communication so that all of the misunderstandings would have never happened.

NEWT SCAMANDER AND (mostly Tina's) PICTURES

Is it me procrastinating about Christmas and not being able to sleep for days ? Probably (and probably why even in French this … thing is almost impossible to understand… Sorry)

(it begins with personal rambling, you can skip and go after the first picture)

(it's only a personal analysis and belief, not at all something studied or anything… Take it as HC)

Excepted for autism, and his work (or maybe because of both), there is another thing (among many others TBH, oupsi) that I love about Newt Scamander and his character's building. That's his fascination for pictures.

Hiding myself behind a camera has been, for a long time, a way to find a place in the world, to cope with social interactions and is how I met the few friends that are still in my life. Through the viewfinder it was easier for me to see people, the world, as I wanted to, as I needed to. I could focus on things that interested me, or just take the time for those which intrigued me or simply were difficult to cope with. Objects, details, colours, noises, … I could build a bubble for myself, a bubble that made me look like as if I was in the present, and really with people that surrounded me.

That said, it took me almost 25 years of photographic practice to dare to make pictures of people. Then, I did it as I wanted to, not with some “bizarre” codes. Eyes, hands, people without faces, a crease on a shirt, hands (yes, hands twice, I find people easier to understand when looking at what their hands are saying than when looking at their eyes)… It was a way to talk where difference didn't equal oddity. I was then able to exist in a group, behind the camera without looking directly at people. Ever. The eye-cup was my mask, among many others, but certainly the most efficient one. I didn't have to really be in the present, the camera covered it up, and the sound and vibration from the Clic of the shutter were my best anxiolytic, as were my books.

Anyway. I don't know why I talk about that. I like the pictures thematic around Newt's character because of how much Photography is also for me the only way to register a face. I need to see the picture of a person for a long while in order to be able to recognize them (thank you social media for that, at least at early rise). I let you imagine how it was for classes pictures… 3 months after the beginning of school I couldn't tell to my mother who was who). Without that time with a picture, I can't relate the face (that can sound familiar) to the person, neither with the context nor the name. If I have a picture to look at, I can memorize the person.

To be honest, if I had been Newt, it's possible (probable) that I wouldn't have been able to recognize Tina in COG if it wasn't in the specific context that we expected her (like in that cave, where he was looking for her specifically).

Fun fact : I was in a relationship with my husband for 4 years when he cut his hair, I didn't recognize him as himself, he was his older brother for me. It took me days to proceed.

The fact that Newt keeps one (or more) picture(s), beyond the romantic symbol linked to his times, resounds really deeply in me. In my interpretation, he carries the pictures of the people he wants to be able to recognize anywhere and anytime, no matter the context, no matter if he is prepared to see them, no matter if it's the wrong place/time/… or if it had been a very long time since he last saw them (Hello, Leta).

That's also what makes the Salamanders metaphor even more beautiful. The Tina in the picture is, to him, even more Tina than the real Tina at this point of the story (he spent more time with the picture than with the real one). This Tina is the one he sees every day, the one he had time to study, without the need to lower his gaze because of the reciprocity (it can be debated with moving wizards pictures and how Tina's pictures interact with him, or we can make other HC about that…

Carrying this picture, studying this picture, talking about this picture is his way to say I love you.

(and no, it's not creepy, it's just, I believe, a proof of commitment).

Another important point (and linked to the previous one) is how he keeps his pictures. The lid of his case is like a scrapbook album (and that has been confirmed by Eddie Redmayne in the SOD Movie Magic Book). This lid is where critical things (like pictures) are mixed with things that are, in appearance, unsignificant. These little souvenirs, however, are telling/keeping a story so much larger in themselves. These little objects and their soul are yelling a tale to us, a lot more than a long story or a video could (thank you, thank you Minalima for the props in the FB serie because it's A LOT about that). The call of the souvenirs to tell memory… My journals and scrapbook albums are telling more about myself than I could be able to verbalize. I believe the case's lid is exactly the same about Newt. If you want to know what is important for him at a particular moment, just look at the lid of his case.

Now… pictures in the pockets… It may be the part that fills my heart the most, probably because it summarizes the others points.

In the first movie, when Newt need to fidget, he lets his hands wander around his pockets (and not always the same side of the coat, if I remember well), and it's mostly around where he keeps his wand.

In the second movie, and even more in the third (where, I don't need to say it again, Tina isn't here at all during the plot), Newt's hands are always wandering around the same pocket, as soon as something is bothering him/if there is an anxiety trigger. This pocket is the one where he'll take Tina's newspaper picture in the Archive room, and the very same (from a different coat) he'll take his passport with Tina's ID picture in it.

That ID picture that is worn by time and use because I strongly believe that Newt uses this picture as an anxiety relief. If you look at it, the folding is in the same place as the lock of hair he put behind Tina's hair on the dock scene in FBAWTFT. Yes, I'm pretty sure that the pictures in his pockets are grounding objects, weapons against anxiety. Touching these, beyond the simple fidgeting (in a sensory meaning, that ALSO counts A LOT) is an anxiety reliever because they are representing Tina (and the memories he associates to her, and what he feels for her).

This choice is telling us about how Newt sees Tina, or, more precisely, what she also (added to the romantic relationship) means to him. It's her picture he uses to be grounded inside the reality, to stay inside the “human world”, to lower his stress level. By extension, I conclude she's the one who fulfill this purpose for him. She's the one who becomes her “human guide” in order for him to be able to navigate without (with less) stress when he has to handle and go through difficult situations for him. Which says a lot about Tina, but it's a story for another day …

Jacob is more the one who helps Newt to really learn/understand some social codes. TBH, that's one of the reasons I love so much their relationship (I also have my Jacob, as I have my Tina and my life is a lot better since then. I wish I had a Queenie…

).

I believe Leta was more or less doing the job in Hogwarts, far beyond any “lovers metaphor”. But I also believe it was differently, and at a different level. For what we know, her picture wasn't ever in his pocket, just in the shed, so I believe she didn't represent the stress reliever part, and she was, maybe, probably, a stress trigger.

Yes, Newt's relationship with pictures, is one of many reasons why I love this character so deeply. It's one of the reasons why for the first time in my life I feel so deeply connected to a fictional character (aside Bones & Reid, but Newt is such a different representation…).

Newt Appreciation Month: Day 9, Favourite Newt moment with others!

Ok so let’s see, there are a few good moments out there with some of the other main characters.

Newt With Jacob!

First up Newt and Jacob, since they became fast friends, and he was the first friend Newt made since Leta. Newt doesn’t make friends easily, but he bonded with Jacob pretty quickly. It’s actually really hard to pick just one moment that I like with Jacob, since I like nearly every interaction and scene these two have together. They’re both hilarious together. I just love their friendship, but I’m going to go with the suitcase scene, since that scene was my comfort scene for a whole year after the film came out. It’s the first scene that we really get to hear Newt talk more and with enthusiasm. I don’t know I just like that scene.

There are so many other scenes I could choose too. I like the scene where Newt asks Jacob for advice, the erumpent mating dance scene, on the train in the third film, just so many. These two are just hilarious. Literally I cold go on and on.

Newt with Leta

For these two sadly there wasn’t enough scenes with them together in my opinion. I wish there had been, and that we could have had their relationship develop more throughout the series. Unfortunately the evil author decided to kill the poor girl. I think there could have been so much potential there. It seemed stupid and pointless killing an actually interesting character. But my favourite scene withe Newt and Leta would be her intro scene at the ministry, when they both walk and talk. I felt so much chemistry between them, and it was such a beautiful scene. I know a lot of fans don’t like her, especially the Newtina fans, but I think Leta was very misunderstood and had as fascinating, yet complicated back story. I guess I like complicated characters to a certain extent.

I couldn’t find anything with the two of them walking through the ministry, so you’ll just have to deal with this threesome picture instead. The bane of this challenge is trying to find appropriate pictures that go with you thoughts. Honestly, that’s what makes the whole process longer.

Newt with Lally!

Ok this one is easy, the scene on the train, where he’s gushing over her. I really like that scene, it’s so cute!

Newt and Theseus!

Lastly one of the best moments with someone that means something to Newt, would be the deleted scene from SoD! I’m probably going to be repeating myself a lot during this challenge, or at least I feel like I probably will. But this is the alternate scene that beats them all. I just love the bonding taking place in that scene. It was just so beautiful.

I just can’t get enough of these two in this scene. Theseus was being the older caring brother, and Newt was that younger sibling wanting to run and hide from his older brother. And then they are just two brothers having a laugh and remembering times gone past, and singing along to a song from their mother, or could it be their father? Lol! They were just two squabbling, but friends again brothers, and I love that.

Wow, thank you so much for asking this question! I’ve thought a little about it but never in this much detail before so it was really interesting to consider. Forgive the wall of text you might be about to face :D

What if Newt was captured at the German Ministry instead of Theseus?

I think Newt would have been kidnapped outright rather than walking into a trap. If Theseus had been a bit slower in the German Ministry and Newt not distracted, I think Newt might have stopped his older brother. So I think they would have just grabbed and bundled Newt off. To begin with, I believe that Newt wouldn’t antagonise Grindelwald and the others so much.

I feel like he would be more diplomatic and more focused on surviving and getting back to the others and therefore would be a bit more of a “meek” captive: not necessarily because he’s not brave but because he knows what he wants and it’s not necessarily confrontation. Newt is also devastated by Leta’s death, but I think he has a more holistic perspective on the whole thing that focuses a lot less on self-recrimination and revenge, so he might be able to try and push that aside to talk diplomatically with Grindelwald, despite not liking the dark wizard at well.

Dumbledore clearly likes Newt quite a lot, which would worry me in the context of my fic where Grindelwald is pretty damn obsessed with both Dumbledore and anyone associated with him. But it might have meant Newt was able to convince Dumbledore to come/summon him/something similar much faster than Theseus, who was more of an extraneous team member (no offence to Theseus!!).

Also, the fact that Theseus was meant to get imprisoned/had the stint in the Erkstag encountered for in the original plan might have meant Dumbledore would step in sooner to keep his original plan intact, as it wouldn’t have accounted for Newt’s disappearance. I’m thinking of when Grindelwald said “do you think Dumbledore will mourn for you?” to Newt - and maybe Grindelwald already knew then that Dumbledore has a soft spot for Newt (not in a romantic way or anything, but just the hope and inspiration Newt’s faith brings to Dumbledore’s life).

I also think if it was Newt kidnapped and Theseus looking for him, the team could find Newt a lot faster because Theseus would be able to make it a Ministry concern and utilise the whole of the department. With the roles being reversed it made it quite operationally difficult in the fic, especially because I went with the idea they didn’t want to get Dumbledore in trouble by letting it get out. So Theseus would have had a better shot at being able to cover it up in the Ministry, but Newt couldn’t cover it up in the Ministry for Theseus.

If it was Newt, I’d actually feel so sad though because he doesn’t strike me as someone so thirsty for revenge, so then the loss of control is more stark and the “meaning” of the whole ordeal is gone. While Theseus kind of fights it the whole way through because he’s been pursuing Grindelwald for years as an Auror, because he sees it as being a chance at confrontation, to free his old friend, etc, I think Newt wouldn’t have that kind of perspective and might lapse into depression faster :(.

I think it would have actually been really interesting for Newt and the original Percival Graves to interact but I think it’d be tough for Newt, given that the poor man got tortured by Grindelwald wearing Graves’s face. It probably would have changed the conditions of the vow.

Maybe Graves and Newt would have bonded together after a while of being fellow captives, or maybe Graves would have been used against Newt in a different way: as more of an intimidating threat rather than a fellow victim, with Grindelwald pulling the strings there. Perhaps Grindelwald would force Percival to hurt Newt. I think solidarity between Newt and Percival could be possible but it might also go either way. I’m not confident that the exact same terms of the Vow would convince Newt.

But I think both the brothers are stubborn, so I don’t think Newt would have made any agreements immediately either way haha. Perhaps Grindelwald would believe he didn’t even need the Vow to bind Newt; maybe he’d underestimate him; maybe Newt would be better at feigning compliance, as even though he’s not an astute actor he could at least hold his tongue, which Theseus repeatedly manages not to do.

I headcanon that Grindelwald sort of “likes” Newt and would perhaps try harder to persuade him to join him rather than just beating him up all the time. I sense that Newt is one of those people who, when really hurt, just retreats and disassociates. I think conventional tactics of torture wouldn’t work very well on him. Instead, I think Grindelwald would have used Newt’s love for the team and his creatures to try and sway him to his side, by making sure he didn’t ask Newt to do anything that REALLY went against his nature, trying to make Newt into a messenger between him and Dumbledore by using the carrot not the stick.

Sort of like a dark!Newt but without Newt being ever truly evil - although I think he’d feel really guilty and possibly quite distressed about it. Maybe even freeing Newt and getting him to act as a double agent and feed information back on the conditions that Grindelwald doesn’t hurt anyone Newt cares about.

I know in the fic Newt gets really upset because Theseus is gone but has quite complicated feelings about trying to wrap his head around the situation and understand the magnitude of it despite their somewhat troubled relationship. I think if the roles were reversed Theseus would be going INSANE. I don’t think he’d be mulling over more existential questions like “hmm but who really was Newt all along, why did he leave?” - that kind of reflection would only come afterwards because of Theseus’s pragmatic nature.

During Newt’s captivity I think Theseus would just be like…ballistic, razing things to the ground, punching people etc. I can see Theseus going off alone (kind of like Tina and Newt did) and trying hard to pick fights or find Grindelwald’s fortress, although probably without much luck given how hard it is to break in.

Something about that switch between the two brothers also makes me think the Brazilian ministry or equivalent - so the team seeing Newt with Grindelwald - would have gone better as well. I feel like Newt is less of a dark horse - everyone would KNOW that Newt was really still with them because he’s inherently good and gentle, whereas Theseus was a bit more of a loose cannon who’d already made a risky/strange decision in attempting the arrest.

I also think Newt is more wary of Theseus than Theseus is of him. If Newt was standing there with Grindelwald, Theseus would be like “give me back my little brother, the fuck!” while because the relationship Newt has with Theseus is a little different, Newt was more unsure. I still reckon Theseus and Tina would make a good team though!

Funnily enough, I think that just as Theseus is being a little distant with Newt at the reunion, Newt would also do the same with Theseus. In some ways I think Newt’s tendency to retreat would make him really hard to care for, especially because he’s used to dealing with things alone.

Then again, because Tina’s there, they’d get through it together with lots of love. And Theseus would definitely do his own fair share of older brother mother-henning too. There’d be no way Newt could evade the hospital ward (so long as it wasn’t Theseus trying to get an injured Newt past the manticore, because that could have gone a bit hairy lol!). Neither brother is a particularly good convalescent, but when it comes down to it, I think Newt would be slightly better :D

I love Theseus, but if it were Newt in his place for this fic I’d be so heartbroken…especially because worryingly I think Grindelwald would have much rather have had Newt as a prisoner, which is not a good omen </3

BioShock/Sinking City: Welcome to the Surface

Onboard the apparent escape craft, Jack and Liz find five little girls and one teenage girl decked out in a diving suit like the one who had he had fought in Oakmont. The resulting tense standoff between Jack and Eleanor is thankfully resolved when Tenenbaum’s sphere surfaced and she gets the two of them to stand down. 

After getting Eleanor, Tenenbaum, Subject Sigma (aka Charles Milton Porter), and all the girls that they and Delta rescued onboard the Mary Catherine, Jack proceeds to chew out Tenenbaum for taking their submersible and going off on her own to Rapture of all places.

Tenenbaum points out that while it was foolhardy, it worked out: All the kidnapped girls have been rescued risking only the life of a single person (herself), and they have acquired the resources and people for a new mission. When asked what this mission is, she replies: “Saving the survivors of Rapture.”

For a while now, she has been theorizing about a cure for ADAM sickness. It would work by using ADAM’s own recall of past genetic changes to reverse the splicing and turn a splicer back to normal. The issue is the sheer number of potential bonding sites for such a cure. Tenenbaum needed a powerful computer to calculate these sites, and she found it in the “Rapture Operational Data Interpreter Network”, or the “Thinker”.

With the Thinker’s blueprints and the resources of Ryan Industries in hand, they’ll be able to make a second Thinker, create the cure for ADAM, and then return to Rapture to cure the remaining splicers and also save the surviving non-splicers.

This changes everything for Jack. For years now, Rapture was shoved into the back of his mind. When it became clear that someone in Rapture was responsible for the coastal kidnappings, the legacy of Andrew Ryan, his father, was brought right back up. 

Feeling responsible for the horrors that have continued on in Rapture during his absence, and while reluctant to go back, Jack is all for this cure and saving whoever is left. He pledges to return to Rapture after developing this cure and using the resources of the original rescue mission as the groundwork for another, larger expedition. With that, he orders the Mary Catherine to set a course to Iceland to get the rescued girls to the authorities.

After handing off the girls to the Icelandic authorities and making up a story for having found them, the Mary Catherine sets sail for its home port of Oakmont. They arrive just in time for Thanksgiving, with the Jolene girls and the Reed family waiting on their pier for them as they dock. 

After a joyous reunion, Jack, Liz, and Tenenbaum introduce Eleanor and Porter to their friends and family. Still a Big Daddy, Porter is stuck with having to wave and make a whale-like noise. Thankfully, the Jolenes and the Reeds are used to interacting with far stranger things than him.

As for Eleanor, thanks to the isolation imposed by her mother, she is very unused to interacting with new people, especially with her own age group. Due to her experiences, she finds it easier to talk and relate with adults. After managing to say hi to Masha, Leta, Sally, Annabelle, and Daisy, she moves on to the Reeds who, she realizes with a shock, she recognizes them as a rush of memories race through her mind.

She remembers growing up in Oakmont, looking up to her father and wanting to be a Navy diver just like him, achieving that dream, then going independent and working as a freelance diver, which led her to finding an undercity run by the missing tycoon, Andrew Ryan. Subject Delta, Johnny Topside, is none other than Jonathan Reed, the son of Charles and Joy Reed.

When she took Delta’s ADAM to preserve his consciousness in her mind, not only did she gain his plasmids and gene tonics, but she also gained access to the memories that he had lost in the process of becoming a Big Daddy. Faced with the family that Delta was denied for over ten years, Eleanor swallows hard and puts up a brave face as she greets her “grandfather”, “grandmother”, and the siblings of her “father”, somehow managing not to cry.

The Jolenes and Reeds have their traditional Thanksgiving dinner, which is held this year at Jolene Manor (formerly Blackwood Manor), with two unexpected guests. Having never seen so much food and of such variety, Eleanor stuffs her face, after which she takes a long and satisfied nap. Porter doesn’t contribute a lot to the dinner conversation, but the Jolenes and Reeds make sure that he knows he’s welcome.

After dinner, Jack and Liz take Charles and Joy aside and explain everything: Rapture, ADAM, plasmids, Big Daddies, Little Sisters, Big Sisters, and now, their new mission to save the survivors of Rapture. Charles and Joy aren’t really surprised; they figured that the backstories of Jack, Liz, and their adopted daughters were likely strange. After all, nobody that comes to live in or was born in Oakmont has a normal life.

Tenenbaum is for immediately beginning work on the new Thinker; she sees no point in stalling and Jack agrees with her. The sooner they get back to Rapture, the more people they can save. That just leaves one question: Who’s coming with?

Jack is a given; his status as Andrew Ryan’s heir means that Rapture’s security systems will be open to him. He doesn’t like the idea of Liz coming with, but she’s made it clear that where he goes, she goes as well. Besides, her skills with stealth make her a valuable asset in Rapture’s environment. Tenenbaum knows the ins and outs of both the city and ADAM, so she’s also coming with.

Charles would love to come with and help his friends, but he’s gotten on in years. He’s glad that his children’s lack of powers exclude them from going to Rapture; Jack is glad the same is true for his girls.

That leaves Eleanor and Porter. While both are powerful combatants and veterans of the insanity and horror of Rapture, Jack and Co. wouldn’t blame either of them if they didn’t want to come with. They’ve been through a lot, and asking them to go back to Rapture would be cruel.

It’s going to take a while for the new Thinker to be built and calculate the cure’s bonding sites, so that means that Eleanor and Porter will have time to recover from their ordeals. Sadly, Porter’s activities will be limited, as he’s still stuck in his Big Daddy suit and that’ll have people asking questions, even in a town like Oakmont.

Eleanor has more options. While she’s almost seven feet tall (Big Sisters are about 6 feet, 10 inches), she has no splicing damage and isn’t grafted into her suit. The city of Oakmont, with all its strangeness, secrets, and dark history, is about to become the playground and school for a daughter of Rapture.
