I don't know how you feel about vampires having sex in the show while books vampires could not, but I think it was to be expected in a 2022 TV series and personally I don't mind the change. I just hope that they keep the incest between Lestat and Gabrielle at the same level that it was in the book, with just kisses and ambiguous tension, but without making them actual lovers, even though I know that some people would love for the show to go full GOT route.

Oh yeah I agree for sure. Part of the reason why I think the incest in tvl is worthy of being explored is bcus it relied heavily on how vampires don’t have human sex or arousal, so kissing ur mom and calling her your lover doesn’t have the same connotations as it would with a human mother and son. Their concept of sex and what it means to be a “lover” are different from ours so the incest and the use of the word “lover” is more symbolic of their complicated ill defined relationship than literal mother and son incest bcus, well, vampires don’t have sex.

I don’t know how I feel about the sex in the show tbh. On one hand I am a simple man and enjoy a good sex scene, on the other I feel like some of the interesting disconnect between vampires and humans when it comes to intimacy and attraction is lost. I think it’s so cool how in the books vampire’s feelings of arousal are centered more orally and around killing and blood bcus that’s literally how they procreate, their genitalia means nothing now bcus they populate the species by turning ppl into vampires. I think it’s neat! I love the concept of vampirism fundamentally altering ur physical needs to make u function as a whole new species, it’s so cool. In the show sex is kind of the same for vampires and humans, so they’d def have to change some things when it comes to Lestat and Gabrielle if they want to retain the core of their tension in the books. I think they could do this if they decided to explore how familial dynamics r demolished when ur turned into a vampire or even how sex changes when ur a vampire or what sex means, since makings sex smth they can do doesn’t necessarily rule out the stuff I went over coexisting with that. Thanks for bringing that up to me, I had some thoughts about how the vampires ability to have sex in the show would mean that Gabrielle and Lestat ‘s dynamic would have to change if they want to keep the same themes/implications, but I had trouble articulating them. @monstersinthecosmos and I were talking and she dug up this exchange Anne had with someone on Fanpop back in the day, concerning vampires' love and sexuality. There were quite a few fascinating tidbits but these are my favorites:

I see them [vampires] as transcending matters of gender or age. Lestat loves Louis. Louis loves Claudia. Armand loves Lestat. Lestat loves Gabrielle. There is no distinct difference in the quality of any of these loves. This has also been described as polymorphous sensuality.

"--- Armand is desperately in love with Lestat but it has nothing to do with sex. Armand feels Marius failed him and Marius feels Armand failed him, and that part has nothing to do with sex. Marius and Pandora, that is a love affair, but again sex has nothing to do with it. So they are all capable of loving people of their own gender and the other gender; gender doesn't matter. It's the essence. Lestat loves David Talbot as a lover, a friend, a mentor, a father, etc. --- It goes on like that. The act of dominating and drinking blood can happen between any two characters regardless of gender. They cannot be pinned down. They see all life as potentially beautiful and all forms of love as rewarding."

I'm verklempt at the fact Anne mentioned Armand and Lestat in the same vein as Armand and Marius and Marius and Pandora, but also I love how much she emphasizes that they can cannot be pinned down and all that forms of love are rewarding!

It's just such a revolutionary way of thinking especially when you consider that she was a woman born in the 1940s in the American South. She may have missed the beat on some things but on others, she was right on the fucking money.

Do you think the show will describe Lestat and Gabrielle relationship as romantic? And how would you prefer their relationship to be portrayed?

I absolutely do think that they’re going to go the incest route 😭😭 Just based on how Rollin Jones talks about Gabrielle and Lestat’s relationship and the way that they changed Antoine to more resemble Gabrielle over Nicolas, I think they’re going to go for it all the way. I actually get the impression that Rollin is rlly excited about that aspect of their relationship which is, well, interesting? Lol.

But honestly? I think it would be kind of weak if they didn’t address or include it at all. I v much support their choice to take away the romance between Louis and Claudia bcus I didn’t think that was necessary in the book and didn’t find that Anne Rice did a good job writing it in a way that would well, mean smth. The only point to it was “well Claudia’s an adult now” which is expressed in better ways through out the book anyway, so it just felt like uncomfortable shock value for the sake of it. I think the show handled their relationship really well, they removed the romance but still retained some of the original gross out factor by having that “which one of you are going to fuck me?” Line and making a point of reminding us that bcus of their nature as vampires Claudia’s familial role to Louis is ever changing depending on what she feels like she wants it to be. It’s off putting and uncomfortable, having these implications along with the daughter to sister thing, while being interesting and thematically satisfying, which the romance in the book wasn’t. One change I actually like that the show made! 

I believe that things like incest have a place in fiction, but not necessarily a good one if they’re just thrown in bcus “oh but taboo relationships are a genre convention in gothic lit!” With no logic or thought put in beyond that. Anne Rice did a slightly better job with the incest in tvl than in iwtv, but it still felt lackluster and out of nowhere to me. She seems to just enjoy throwing uncomfortable topics into her books bcus she can, which is disappointing bcus a lot of the time u can see the potential that it could’ve had. I think Gabrielle and Lestat’s relationship is conceptually very interesting, incest and all. Lestat and Gabrielle’s strange line crossing Mother and son relationship is rooted in a lot of things. The way vampirism demolishes traditional familial dynamics and changes self perception, perception of sex and romance, and societal expectations in general. Gabrielle’s envy for Lestat and unhealthy desire to live through him sometimes, Lestat’s trauma inflicted desperation to be nurtured and mentored with no one to do that for him, and so on. 

The strangeness of their dynamic in summarization comes from Gabrielle’s desire to be a companion, or a brother, or a friend to Lestat once she’s a vampire and Lestat’s conflicting desire to be nurtured and mothered by Gabrielle as his son. Lestat wants an eternal mommy and Gabrielle wants a friend who understands her life experiences, and so they clash. And if they’re gonna have gross incest-y kisses about it to make this boundary crossing come across in interesting ways? Sure I’m cool with that. Anne Rice didn’t do it well in my opinion, since she only explored these concepts minimally, but if it’s done well I can see it being great. I think incest as a thematic tool can absolutely work, but if it’s just there to be there and say nothing, then I want nothing to do with it.

In conclusion if Rollin and the amc writers handle the tvl incest in a way that’s similarly thoughtful to their handling of Claudia and Louis’s dynamic then Im looking forward to seeing it, lol. But if they just throw it in for shock value, like they have done with other topics and scenes, then eughhh get it away from me. And I don’t think I’d be satisfied if they did away with the incest vibes completely for the sake of sanitation, but I doubt they’ll do that anyway.

every time i think about how messed up the vampire bonds/families are i go a little insane. louis and claudia are siblings because lestats their father but lestats also louis husband so claudia’s louis child too but then gabrielle’s lestat’s actual mother and also his daughter so that means louis is gabrielle’s son in law and also her brother and all the children are psychically linked so when lestat’s railing his husband/son louis, his sister/daughter and mother/daughter can hear it all if louis doesnt put up a block which he sometimes canonically doesnt per ep 6. riveting television is back!
