Lucas pulls his robes tighter around him as he starts the long walk up from the Slytherin common room. The cloak is a little too big on him, a secondhand find his mama managed to track down in Diagon Alley, and it’s a bit roomy up top, too much space for his 11-year-old shoulders to fill. She’d tried to tailor it to Lucas more, but there’s only so much a needle and thread could do without being aided by magic.

He glances down at his schedule to check his classes again and make sure Charms is still in that first slot. He doesn’t think anyone would’ve jinxed the parchment overnight, but Imane had heard from her brother who had heard from some Hufflepuff who had heard from another friend who had overheard some third-years whispering about playing a prank on the first-years today.

And Lucas doesn’t need a prank right now, really. He’s got enough going on this morning already. He’d slept in late and missed breakfast in the Great Hall, and when he woke up, Imane had already left and she had promised him that they could walk to class together. She said her brother, Idriss, had made her a map with all of the classrooms so that she wouldn’t get lost on the first day, and Lucas was kind of counting on the map to guide them for at least the first week. Lucas needs that map!

He makes he way out of the dungeons to find the hallways just a little too empty. He glances down to check his watch: he’s nearly late!

Lucas starts running, robe fluttering out behind him and bag bouncing against his back as he dashes around corners and pushes past older students walking leisurely, and the confidence in their movements is envy-inducing.

By some miracle, Lucas makes it to the Grand Staircase and dashes up the first flight he sees, trusting that it’ll get him where he needs to go. Imane said Charms was on the third floor, right?

He takes the steps two at a time, nearly tripping over his robe as he goes. He’s on his final staircase, the door to the third floor in sight, when all of a sudden he gets thrown to the side, sending him stumbling into the handrail. Ouch. Falling against the stone, Lucas looks up and sees the world turning on its axis.

“Are you okay?” someone asks, and Lucas stares with panic-stricken eyes at the boy who has somehow appeared in front of him. He’s got sandy hair and robes accented with blue, and Lucas may be a little slouched over but he can tell this boy is tall.

“What’s happening?” he asks, clutching the stone behind him as the staircase jerks.

The boy furrows his brow. “The stairs are moving, of course.”

The stairs move? The prefect from last night hadn’t mentioned that! Bloody hell, how’s he supposed to get to class now?

“Merlin’s beard,” Lucas whispers, slumping against the stairs as they continue on their new path.

The boy chuckles and holds out a hand to Lucas, which he promptly takes and lets himself be pulled up to his feet. (The boy is even taller than Lucas had thought he was. Definitely older, maybe a third-year? And hopefully not one of the ones playing pranks, because now he’s seeing Lucas’ ill-fitting robes and messy hair and Lucas has never felt more like a target.)

“Where are you headed?” the boy asks, keeping a hand on Lucas’ shoulder to steady him as the staircase slams into place.

“Ch-Charms.”

“Room 2E?” Lucas nods. “Oh, this worked in your favor, then. You were headed to the old Forbidden Wing, actually. 2E will be the second door on your left,” he notes, nodding to the door at the end of the staircase. “You’ll be in class in no time.”

“Really?” The boy nods, and a weight lifts itself off his shoulders. He won’t be late after all!

“Thank you,” he mutters, shooting the boy a grateful smile before hefting his backpack over one shoulder and dashing up the stairs.

“Hey, wait!” Lucas turns to find the boy on the same stair he was before, staring at him expectantly. “What’s your name?”

“Lucas.” The boy’s eyes sparkle when Lucas says it, picking up on the soft vowel, the slight accent underneath.

“Are you French?” he asks, and it builds a smile along his lips that sends heat across Lucas’ cheeks.

“Yeah,” he answers. “But my family lives in London.”

“Me, too!” The boy’s excitement shines, and he bounces up on his toes with the force of it. A rush of...something...sends Lucas’ heart beating fast. “Or, er, moi aussi, I guess.”

Lucas beams. Merlin, it feels good to hear French again. “And you are?” he asks, going down a step to get just a little closer again.

“Eliott. I’m a second-year.”

So he is older. “Oh, I’m a —”

“First year,” Eliott finishes with a laugh. “I figured.”

Lucas bites his lip, embarrassed, and nods over to the third floor corridor behind him. “Well, I’d better get to class.”

“O-Oh, uh, yeah, me, too.”

There’s a moment where they just stare at each other, identical smiles on their faces, and another weird thrill of that something clasps his heart.

“À bientôt, Lucas,” Eliott says, waving once as he turns to find his new staircase.

“À bientôt,” Lucas whispers after him.

Lucas thinks he’s really going to like Hogwarts.

So here are some of the fics that I’ve been reading these last few weeks (and have literally saved my quarantine so thank you to all of these amazing writers) :

Literally anything by @livvyblxckthxrn - probably my favorite fic ever (could actually be a novel kajdks) is seven minutes in heaven, but it is really worth it to read everything by her

Also one of my favorite writers @cheloueliott - café six was literally the death of me (i hadn’t cried so much in a long time kajskahs) also the series Madeleine is the cutest thing ever and also all of the other fics

@oceanicinception has a new multi-chapter - in motion - and the first chapter is amazing also her other works are wonderful

XJane on ao3 has amazing fics - one WIP multi-chapter tea for two is great but also worth it to go through all of her works

Dis/connected by natalie19h34 on ao3 is an amazing one chapter

Though tides may change a WIP multi-chapter by @ottelis is incredible and her writing is so deep and I felt so emotional while reading it

They’ll hang us in the louvre by @blanxkey a one chapter friends with benefits au

Echo by @stoffans is a new royalty multi-chapter. She’s posted the prologue and I’m so excited for the rest! Also I really want to read road trip, bitches

@sandalwoodhusbands has written several perfect fics and the latest I’ve read is Boys that marry and it is just so cute

Meet me (in the hotel room by) @adventuresofaphrodite is amazing

@ayellowcurtain posts several fics as they are requested and they are perfect, I’ve specially loved one that has four parts and is about geek Lucas who is asked by Eliott to go out after a bet, also has fics on ao3

@bluronyourradar has recently posted some amazing prompts and also has amazing fics on ao3

@briallenko has great fics on ao3, I loved next door and stay here, but she has many wonderful others, by the way, she also does great drawings and paintings (I still haven’t got over the ones she made yesterday of 🦝 Eliott and 🦔 Lucas)

@pinkplanetaries is such an incredible writer and all her fics are perfect, all of them made me laugh so hard and I felt really happy after reading, the last one I read was the most beautiful view and it is amazing

@surrealsunday has me whipped with all her fics, just today I read her one chapter spark to flame and it is really worth reading it

@flying-elliska also incredible writer, I will never get over les diamants sont eternels (another one that could easily be a novel) and I’ve been meaning to read ma maison c’est toi

@luxandobscurus has numerous fics on ao3, all of them are really worth reading, and she does amazing gifs as well. Oh, and I can’t wait for her new break up au!

@lepetitepeach has written incredible fics, one of my favorites is a measure of the stars and I absolutely loved la lune et le soleil, I also want to read all of her other fics akjskajdksjd, would recommend going through all her works

Everything by @lifeisevak is amazing!! I can’t really choose one akshskdha I would just look at all the works!

So, yeah, uh, I am alive! I missed a bunch of Wednesdays and Fridays... But something is coming, and I am really excited about it! It won’t be too long now...

Also, for all the missed snippets I owe you I will give you something long-ish from something called “Literature AU” I started long ago and may not ever finish. This whole conversation (and almost the whole AU, really) was inspired by the excellent a measure of stars by @lepetitepeach (in the process of being translated into Portuguese by @awake-dreamer18). This snippet consists almost exclusively of test messages, but I am not nifty enough to make it look nice, so you’ll have to deal with it as is.

Lucas Why are all these literary characters so absolutely drab?

Eliott could not let Lucas make such blatantly false statements unchallenged.

Most of them are written so delicately, full of details and intricacies and complexities, with conflicting emotions and ideals and interests, battling internal and external demons – just like real people! Remember how Antigone had to weigh up the love for her sister, her uncle, her fiancé with the love for her brother? How can you decide which love is bigger, Lucas? That’s not drab!

Lucas Uh. Okay, sorry. You are right. Wow, you’re really passionate about this, aren’t you? 😉 I’ll agree they are not drab. Just so… unrelatable?

Eliott Some, maybe. But most of them are human just like all of us. Surely you can relate to some of them? What are you reading now?

Lucas “Reading” is maybe too big a word. But I am leafing through the summary of Pride and Prejudice. Ugh. Stupid Elisabeth. And what’s the deal about Mr Darcy anyway? Everybody loves him because he’s rich? Very superficial, Eliott.

Eliott … Maybe read the actual book, Lucas. Elisabeth doesn’t love Mr. Darcy because he’s rich, but because he is honourable, and caring, and kind, and not trying to control her.

Lucas Okay. But still. I don’t see the appeal myself. They should really have a gay guy look into this.

Eliott Huh?

Lucas A gay guy, Eliott. Straighties don’t understand the appeal of any man, and women are obviously not right in the head to fawn over Mr. Darcy like that. So we need a gay’s perspective.

Eliott Well, I’m not straight, do I count?

Lucas Oh. Sorry. You’re not?

Eliott No. Is that a problem?

Lucas In case it wasn’t clear from my previous texts, I’m gay. So not a problem. I just thought Imane said something about a girlfriend.

Eliott You and Imane talked about me?

Lucas No! Uhm, no. Just came up, I guess. But, no girlfriend then?

Eliott An ex-girlfriend. I’m pan.

Lucas Oh. Okay. Well. Then you see the need for a non-straight perspective.

Eliott I suppose you might be right. Although there are some gay writers featured in the course. Oscar Wilde, for example.

Lucas Did he write about any gay characters?

Eliott Not in so many words. Maybe you have a point.

Lucas Eliott, my dear friend, you should have realized by now I usually have. So, gay Pride and prejudice? You in? I mean… We should write it. I’m sure we’d make it so much better.

Eliott You haven’t even read the book, Lucas. I don’t think you’re qualified to judge whether our hypothetical gay version would be any better.

Lucas Is that your way of saying you don’t want to work on it with me? Come on, Eliott! I’m hurt. I already have the proud and prejudiced down! All you’d have to do is actually write the book. You could use my dating life as inspiration. It’s worse than Elizabeth Bennet’s. Gay P&P might be a horror story.
