News about women in sports and music
Zrazy, Ireland’s award-winning lesbian music duo, are back with a brand new single titled ‘Come On Ireland (Giving Us The Right To Dream)’ just in time to coincide with the Women’s World Cup.The band, which consists of Maria Walsh and Carole Nelson has been around since the 90s and previously went to No.1 in Ireland with another World Cup song, the hugely successful ‘Watch Your House (Ooh Ah, Paul McGrath)’, which featured a spoken word contribution from Paul McGrath.
"
I had been following the Irish women’s team for a long time,” Maria Walsh said about the inspiration for the new song, “it was really inspiring to see them battle their way through to the World Cup finals in Australia. It was a truly extraordinary moment when Amber Barrett scored that winning goal against Scotland.
I couldn’t resist the feeling that we should do something special to celebrate that – and ‘Come On Ireland (Giving Us The Right To Dream)’ is the result. Hopefully, it’ll give Irish fans something unique and memorable to sing on the terraces during the remainder of the build-up, and at the World Cup finals in Australia,” she added.
The song celebrates all Irish sportswomen, with Katie Taylor, Sonia O’Sullivan, Kellie Harrington, “Leona the golfer” and Rhasidat Adeleke also being name-checked among those successfully going toe-to-toe with the best on the planet.
“I really wanted the song to properly celebrate the extraordinary Irish women, who have represented us so powerfully on the world stage,” Walsh remarked.
“For so long Irish women were sidelined, but the success of our female heroes in sport has demonstrated just how profoundly wrong all of that was. And the Irish women’s football team are the latest – and potentially most far-reaching – expression of the reality that Irish women are entitled to equal respect and equal treatment in every aspect of Irish life, without exception.”
To support the Irish women’s team in the World Cup and Zrazy make sure to check out the new single on Bandcamp, iTunes or Spotify. And to find out more about Zrazy and what they were up to in the 90s, check out the GCN archive where you can find out about awards they were nominated, travel tips by Maria Walsh, and much more.

PRINCESS ESTE HAS A DOUBLE DATE NIGHT WITH LONGTIME BEAU
In the decades since her husband’s death, Princess Este has rarely been seen out with anyone in a romantic capacity. It was reported numerous times that she was choosing to focus on her duties as a mother and heir to the throne instead.
However, the longtime single was swept off her feet a few years ago by famed lawyer John Asher-Walsh. The twosome met through a blind date arranged by Este’s brother-in-law, Gregory, who worked at the same law firm as John when they were both first starting their careers.
Tumblr media
It reportedly took some persuading on Greg and Princess Reese’s part to get Este to agree to even go on the date but it seems it was worth it. Seven years later, the couple are still going strong.
We managed to catch the adorable couple leaving a swanky restaurant in Esloe last night. They appeared to be on a double date with Princess Este’s former personal assistant, Leona, and her husband.
Tumblr media
Absent from the outing? A ring on that finger. It’s become a game with royal watchers to immediately check Princess Este’s finger the second there’s a sighting of her, wondering if John will ever pop the question to our beloved princess. In place of an engagement ring was the gold chain link bracelet John gifted her a couple of years ago.
Ring or no ring, they still make a lovely couple and we hope they continue to remain happy together in the years to come.

Masonry Monday: The Case of the Screaming Woman
A gossip columnist attempts to blackmail a doctor with private adoption records that could ruin several reputations. In exchange for her silence, she wants a baby to save her failing marriage. When she turns up dead, the doctor’s nurse confesses to killing her, but Perry Mason has his doubts.
Tumblr media
Who’s Who
Perry Mason’s client: Leona Walsh, the doctor of an obstetrician with noble goals who attempts to throw herself on the sword on his behalf
The victim: Mary K. Davis, a columnist who attempts to use blackmail to become a mother -- and possibly for many other purposes
Suspects: Dr. George Barnes, Leona’s employer, an obstetrician who helps single mothers illegally adopt out their babies Ralph Davis, Mary K’s husband, who wants to end their marriage no matter how much collateral damage there is Susan Marshall, Ralph’s mistress, who is willing to give him up if it keeps innocent people from getting hurt Arthur Jarech, Mary K’s lawyer, who is eager to cover up her latest legal snafu -- and perhaps one of his own Connie Cooper, Mary K’s beleaguered secretary, who feels guilty for abetting her boss and would do anything to stop her Bob Schroeder, Connie’s boyfriend, who is hiding his own family secret that Mary K hints to knowing about
The Setup
Two people, Dr. George Barnes and his nurse Leona Walsh, arrive at the private Seaside Hospital. They see another car parked outside and rush inside to find Barnes’ office door bolted. The door opens to reveal newspaper columnist Mary K Davis, who greets them smugly. Leona looks in a drawer of Dr. Barnes’ desk to discover a black book is gone. Mary K pulls a gun on Dr. Barnes when he threatens to call the police. She tells him she’ll give it back to him in exchange for something he can give her: A baby. She’s told her husband and readers that she’s pregnant. If Barnes doesn’t comply, she’ll publish the names in the book.
Tumblr media
The next morning, Mary K waits until the 10 am deadline for Dr. Barnes, while her secretary, Connie, puts on the coffee. The bell rings, and it’s Leona. Mary K greets her and refuses to let Connie leave the room. Leona tries to plead with Mary K to return the book, but she won’t budge. Mary K says her husband wants a divorce and her “pregnancy” is the only thing stopping him. She’ll give Dr. Barnes 24 more hours. Leona leaves, and Mary K confronts Connie about badmouthing her to Dr. Barnes. Mary K threatens to print something sinister about Connie’s boyfriend, and when Connie runs out in tears.
Connie tries going to the apartment of Susan Marshall, the girlfriend of Mary K’s husband Ralph. Despite Connie’s pleas, Susan says there’s nothing she can do. Connie leaves, and Susan tells Ralph he can come out of hiding. He tells her that he can leave Mary K with a clear conscience, knowing she’s not pregnant, but Susan pleads with him not to and says she’s prepared to give him up. Ralph says he already tried going back to Mary K at Susan’s request, and it made him miserable. Susan says Mary K will print what’s in the book if Ralph leaves her. Ralph, knowing he can’t allow that to happen, angrily says Mary K isn’t fit to live.
Later, Connie and her boyfriend Bob visit the office of Arthur Jarech, Mary K’s lawyer, who is shocked at her behavior. He steps out for a moment, and Bob says he doesn’t trust Jarech. He’s also upset that Connie is telling this secret to so many people. Jarech returns and accurately assesses their lack of trust in him, but assures them this is the right thing. After they leave, he makes a date with Mary K to have dinner with him that night. Shortly after, he meets up with Mary K and, over cocktails, tries to convince her that Dr. Barnes will meet them there and to hand over the book. She refuses and steps away from the table.
Tumblr media
Mary K asks the powder room attendant for a pen and ink, a special delivery stamp, and an envelope big enough to mail the book. The attendant complies and brings her what she needs. Mary K starts to write an address on the envelope, but accidentally smears it and asks for another, tearing the first in half. Later that night, Leona is stumbling around Mary K’s trashed apartment. She goes to the phone and calls Perry Mason’s office, asking if she can see the famous lawyer that night. Della, with a knowing look at his schedule, agrees he can see her.
Enter Perry Mason, Attorney at Law
Perry asks Leona to tell him about the book. She explains that it’s a record of a very particular kind of patient -- Dr. Barnes helps unwed pregnant women and married couples who aren’t legally allowed to adopt children by linking the two together. Dr. Barnes would have the expectant mother register at his hospital under the name of the married adoptive mother. When the child was born, a birth certificate would be issued under the name of the adoptive parents. She also claims that Dr. Barnes wouldn’t charge for his service.
Perry asks who stole the book, and Della recognizes Mary K’s name. Leona asks if there’s any way for him to get the book back, and admits she already entered Mary K’s apartment looking for it -- it wasn’t there. Perry offers to speak with Mary K himself, and Leona freaks out, saying she shouldn’t have come and runs out. She passes Paul on the way out. Perry asks Paul to investigate Barnes’ Seaside Hospital and for Della to find a phone number for Mary K. He calls the number in the phone book, but it’s not Mary K on the phone -- it’s Tragg, who’s standing next to her body.
Tumblr media
In Burger’s office, Tragg says they searched the Seaside Hospital for Leona Walsh, but she wasn’t there. They did find her prints there, and they match the ones in Mary K’s apartment. Burger gets a call: Leona herself is in his office. He ushers her in and offers her a seat. Leona, who looks like she’s about to fall apart, confesses that she killed Mary K. Burger asks his secretary to bring in her notepad to take down Leona’s confession. Back in Perry’s office, he laments Leona’s obvious attempt to cover for someone.
Paul enters and gives the rundown on Mary K: She was married to Ralph Davis of the State Department. Paul recounts Mary K’s cocktail date with Jarech and her asking the attendant for an envelope. He produces the first envelope that Mary K discarded. It’s addressed to Mrs. Mary Gunther, Apt 3C at the Woolworth. Gunther was Mary K’s maiden name. So she mailed the book to herself, and she took the apartment nine days previously. Perry realizes that the apartment is likely a weekly rental, and that the envelope probably hasn’t been delivered yet, and this might call for some subterfuge.
Paul and Della arrive at the Woolworth and view apartment 3C. Paul says his “sister” likes the apartment and will take it, and tells the manager to put Mrs. Gunther’s things in the storeroom. After the manager leaves, Paul gives Della her instructions: When the package arrives, put it with Mary K’s things to go into the storeroom, and she’s not to tell the mailman that she is Mrs. Gunther. He’ll also signal her if Tragg arrives. Della settles in and prepares to wait.
The Investigation
Tumblr media
Perry, meanwhile, arrives at Mary K’s apartment to see Connie, who’s there with Bob. Both Connie and Bob admit to knowing Leona and Dr. Barnes. Connie confesses that she’s the one who told Mary K everything about Dr. Barnes and the book. They both claim they were together at the time of the murder. Ralph Davis enters the apartment and Bob introduces him to Perry. Ralph says he believes Leona might have acted in self-defense, as Mary K was a volatile person. Perry accuses him of wanted to use Leona as a smokescreen so the police won’t look too closely at him or at Susan Marshall.
Back in apartment 3C, Della finally answers the bell for the mailman. He hands her the envelope and asks “Mrs. Gunther” for directions, so Della is forced to imply she is Mrs. Gunther. After he leaves, Della looks for a place to hide the envelope when she hears a crunching sound in the other room. Someone opens the bedroom door and Della ducks behind it. She sees the shadow of a gun pointing out from the other side of the door. After the shadow retreats, Della flees with the envelope in hand.
In Perry’s office, Della laments that she took the package, but Mason says she made the right call. She didn’t see who the intruder was. Paul is concerned about the package, saying they can’t open it. Perry tells Della she knows Mary Gunther isn’t at the apartment, so he has her write “Return to Sender” on the envelope. There’s no return address, but no matter. They know the contents belong to Dr. Barnes, so he “suggests” she write his name on the envelope. Paul makes himself scarce.
Tumblr media
Gertie tells Perry that Arthur Jarech is in the office, and Perry tells her to let him in. Della hides the package in a drawer. Jarech tells Perry that he knows about Paul retrieving the envelope, and that the manager at the apartment building rented Mary K’s room to “a very attractive young lady,” glancing at Della. He threatens to go to the district attorney unless Perry gives him the book. Perry guesses that he intends to blackmail or at least extort the names of the people in the book. He tells Jarech to give Hamilton Burger their regards. After he leaves, Perry tells Della to make an appointment with Dr. Barnes.
Dr. Barnes at first thinks Perry is blackmailing him, but Perry says Burger finding out about the book isn’t a threat, it’s a certainty -- and it’ll be the clincher that gets Leona convicted. Perry says that there’s one loophole: Jarech can’t produce the book. He says that he’ll have to turn over the envelope to the police, then lights a cigarette with a match in front of Barnes. With Barnes watching, he flicks the rest of the matches into the fireplace and goes outside to the water cooler. Barnes takes his unspoken advice and puts the book into the fireplace. By the time Perry comes back, it’s completely burnt. Perry asks if Dr. Barnes killed Mary K, and he says he didn’t -- but he implies he would have.
The Trial
In Perry’s office, Della says she’s been served a subpoena duces tecum for the book, which she’s technically never seen and doesn’t have. In the courtroom, Burger calls Della to the stand and says she’s a hostile witness. The judge says that any legal communications Della was involved with are confidential. But Burger says he intends to prove that a book was stolen from that Dr. Barnes’ office and it came into the possession of Perry Mason and Della Street. The judge agrees to let Della take the stand.
Tumblr media
After she’s sworn in, Burger asks about her being in apartment 3C and Mason sending her there, which Della confirms. He asks about taking the envelope from the mailman, who’s in the court, which she also confirms. When he attempts to ask about the envelope, the notebook, and Della’s knowledge of either, Mason throws objection after objection at him, all of which are sustained. Burger is stymied at every turn, as the judge rules he has to prove the notebook existed and was stolen, so he asks for a recess to gather the necessary witnesses.
Back in the office, Perry says Burger will put in the legwork to prove the book’s existence the next day in court. Paul asks about the intruder, and Della notes all she remembers is the crunching sound. Perry has an inspiration: They’ve just assumed this whole time that whoever was in the apartment was after the book, but what if it was something else? He and Paul rush to the Woolworth, and the manager shows them Mary K’s things: Broken dictating cylinders that go into a machine. The crunching sound Della heard could have been someone breaking one of them. He asks the manager to borrow the dictating machine.
As the manager goes upstairs, they plug the machine in and start playing the pieces of the cylinders. It’s Mary K, dictating a story about something sinister. Perry again has an inspiration and asks Paul to find him an actress who can do a good voice impression. The next morning, an actress named Miss Clay finishes reciting her impression of Mary K into a fresh cylinder. Almost immediately afterwards, Tragg arrives and confiscates the dictation machine with the cylinders, including the intact one they just recorded.
Tumblr media
Back in court, Mason tells the judge the property was taken from his office illegally and demands it be returned. Burger says he was tipped that Perry had removed the items from the apartment building. He shows the judge the machine and cylinders, and orders Tragg to load up the intact one. The judge, who’s slightly more lenient on Burger today, agrees to allow him to play the cylinder on the machine for the court to hear. Burger asks for absolute silence in the court.
He plays what’s on the cylinder, and a voice that sounds eerily like Mary K’s rings out from the machine. The voice describes a “terrible hunt,” and says she may be hurting an innocent person by publishing the story. Everyone in the court is listening with absolute attention as the cylinder gets stuck, causing the voice to skip. Finally, one person can’t take the pressure and there’s an outcry in gallery . . .
In Summation
We’ve had thirty murders so far in this series and I’d be hard-pressed to rank any of the victims as being nastier and more hateful than Mary K Davis. Most of the victims in this series, when they’re of the abusive and horrible variety, are content to ruin the life of a few people around them, or even just the accused. If you think about it, Dr. Barnes and Leona open this episode facing a variant of the philosophical trolley problem: Do they let Mary K ruin the happiness of one child or the happiness of hundreds of families, as she comes very close to doing?
The whole case is about the damage that a single selfish person can do when they’re determined and ruthless enough, and Mary K is a masterclass in how to portray such a villain. She’s cunning enough to keep the journal which contains most (but not all) of her blackmail material at a secondary location no one knows about, and knows enough about everyone involved in the case that it’s frankly a wonder that only one of them went through with ending her life. She even flat-out tells Leona not to appeal to her better nature, as she doesn’t have one. That’s Don John, Shakespearean levels of malice and I fully support it.
Tumblr media
I also appreciate how much of a chokehold she has on the other characters of the story. She’s made it so that none of them can move without fear of her publishing her damning column, giving Mary K the checkmate until one of them violently removes her from the board. In fact, I would argue that after she goes, the other suspects almost deflate in the absence of her cruelty and disdain -- they almost become complacent now that her Sword of Damocles is no longer hanging over their head. The doctor is almost resigned to Leona’s fate, despite her efforts to assist him. Ralph even attempts to play the grieving husband, though absolutely no one is convinced.
Leona is a whole extra tragedy all by herself, dramatically throwing herself on the sword for Dr. Barnes when she initially confesses to the murder of Mary K. She also seems to believe wholeheartedly that Dr. Barnes is doing a good deed by running an illegal adoption service for childless couples and unwed mothers -- which, while I wouldn’t say it’s misguided, certainly overlooks the potential harm to the child as it requires deceiving them as well. I believe, in the original Gardner novel, the good doctor also took money for these services, though it perhaps simplifies things for an hour-long show if he’s more altruistic.
Actually, that’s something that I feel isn’t really addressed in the show itself: A lot of the suspects in the case look good because the victim is Mary K, but most of them aren’t saints either. Arthur Jarech’s whole subplot about possibly being crooked (which Mary K may or may not have known about) doesn’t really go anywhere. Ralph Davis briefly tried to rekindle his marriage at the request of his girlfriend -- “rekindle” to the point where he could reasonably be convinced Mary K was having his child. Perry also accurate points out to Leona that Dr. Barnes’s adoption scheme subverts legal mechanisms designed to protect children.
Della gets to play a greater role in this episode, being the operative who retrieves the stolen book from Mary K’s secret apartment. She flubs it, unfortunately -- though admittedly she’s caught in an untenable situation she couldn’t possibly have foreseen. I can’t blame her for getting the heck out of dodge when someone appears in the apartment with a gun. At least Perry has her back when she’s forced to take the witness stand, objecting strenuously to every attempt by Burger to get information out of her.
Tumblr media
I’m not going to spoil the ending, but I will say that I think some viewers might not like that there’s a big, dramatic courtroom confession at the end. However, I want to defend it slightly by pointing out that Perry had deliberately staged the whole incident to be as psychologically tormenting as possible, making the real murderer believe their dark secret was about to be revealed in front of the whole courtroom. So under the circumstances, it’s a little more forgivable, though I’m not going to pretend the moment isn’t also ridiculously melodramatic.
That said, while I’ll defend how Perry Mason gets his confession this episode, I can’t necessarily defend his rather cavalier attitude towards the evidence. He gives Dr. Barnes a clear window and encouragement to burn the book -- he’s correct that the book is the doctor’s property, but it’s also critical evidence in a murder trial. If Burger had managed to put that on Mason, it’d be an easy disbarment hearing. Burger also gets played with the phone dictaphone cylinder with an actress who imitates Mary K’s voice -- perhaps an understandable ploy under the circumstances, but an underhanded one.
There are a couple of lingering questions regarding the mystery that aren’t really explained: First, Mary K was clearly familiar with Dr. Barnes and Leona before stealing the book, but it’s not explained how. Connie also confirms she’s the one who blew the lid on the doctor’s operation, but not how she herself knew about it -- though one could make a good guess by reading between the lines. Also, how did the person who smashed the dictaphone cylinders know about the apartment, since I got the impression Mary K kept it a complete secret?
Judgement: ⚖⚖⚖ (three scales out of four) Perry Mason goes to the absolute limit of his legal maneuvering to help a client who makes his job as difficult as possible. While the mystery does leave a few unanswered questions, the overall plot is twisty and complex enough to keep the viewer engaged until the big reveal.

NOTES: Two days before the show closed on Broadway. Good amount of closeups and good quality filmed from the mid-mezzanine; there is a railing issue for a while in Act 1 but the taper improves. 'Me', 'Gaston' and 'Be Our Guest' are all predominantly missing and recording stopped for some time after 'Gaston', which created a little jump in the timeline to where Maurice gets thrown out of the tavern. Wistfulness (3/34)
Tumblr media
“Ohhh,” Leona nodded, “Now we’re getting somewhere. What happened with Sadie?”
Tumblr media
“We have been spending a lot of time together… We talked a lot; I told her things. Not everything. Yet. You know some stuff is difficult to talk about. I’m going to. Or... was… But yeah… It was good to talk to her. We understand each other,” James spoke, a hint of sadness tainting his voice.
Tumblr media
“But something changed?” Leona asked.
Tumblr media
“Well, yeah…” James said, “She has a boyfriend now, so she can’t spend her nights here anymore.”
Tumblr media
Leona raised her eyebrows, “She spent her nights here?”
Tumblr media
James nodded, “It was nothing. We just talked and cuddled up…”
Tumblr media
You cuddled?!” Leona repeated, sounding disgusted by the idea. “You hate cuddling!”
Tumblr media
“No.” James retorted, “YOU hate cuddling. I don’t mind it. To be honest, I really enjoyed it. With her.”

Wanted Opposites!
This isn’t a very important post, especially when I should be doing drafts but if anyone has these faceclaims to go against any of mine, platonically, romantic, strangers, etc. HMU! (MESSAGES!) I will probably already be attached because I just adore ocs, but even better with these fcs. Don’t be discouraged though if you have none, it’s just a post to put out there if you’re interested in checking it out. I will roleplay with the majority of faceclaims except the ones on my banned list.
