in honor of our gawanke for sieloff trade we had going at the beginning of the year (rip cuda era leon, possibly rip haie era pat), do you have a favourite gawanke moment?

FAVORITE GAWANKE MOMENT--

unfortunately everything that happened in cuda hockey like the actual game of hockey has completely left my brain so i don't remember what cool plays he made. however!! i loved and cherished him and shakir mukhamadullin as a d-pairing. and while obvi shakir is a great player on his own with a bright future hopefully in the sharks org, i do feel that a chunk of what got shakir going in the beginning of the season WAS being paired with leon gawanke. who had of course been playing on in the ahl for several years at that point and helped shakir navigate ahl play full time? imho

like obviously shakir had some experience in the ahl prior to last season but he'd been bouncing pretty chaotically between ufa and north america for two years and i think it's definitely an adjustment when you go from the khl mostly full time to the ahl full time. obviously i say this with extreme hindsight is 20/20 and i hate to give jmac credit for literally anything, but i think that was a good move for a top prospect when we did not at the time have any nhl vets in the d corps (kny and simmer hadn't been sent down yet). hate to make leon ahl vet-coded at the tender age of 24 but iirc at the time it really was him and nick cicek and nikita okhotiuk with the most pro-league experience in the defense corps (and nikita was gone within five games), and i think a lot of what he did paired when he was with shakir so consistently helped set a standard for shakir to play by. especially bc leon was not the fightiest guy on the team - he could set up plays and shakir could mirror them and grow into the offensive d role that the sharks are/were developing him to be. i remember one goal i watched shakir score that leon had a hand in and it was like...god you two could be poetic if this was literally any other franchise. you two could be the future of a d corps in an better world. they were really fun to watch together!!

so even though he did not make it to the nhl in north america, i do think he had a lasting impact, for shakir at least. which i think is nice :)

some belated leon gawanke backstory:

he’s one of the players who left germany to play junior hockey in north america - which ultimately led to him being drafted by the jets. he stayed in the qmjhl until 2019/20 when he signed with the manitoba moose and pretty much tried for years to get to the nhl, which ultimately didn’t happen with the jets. this off-season he announced he’d be joining the adler mannheim in the del, but when the jets traded his rights to the sharks, he pulled a special clause to sign a two-way contract with them. as far as i’m aware he’ll play in mannheim next season unless he ends up on the sharks roster somehow.

overall, leon is very adorable! someone on the moose (can’t remember who it was) said that he’s very relaxed and calm, and when he first needed time to understand what it means to play pro hockey, and that you don’t make the nhl if you’re an average ahl player, but he’s been working on himself and improving a lot since then. he put up a new franchise record for goals scored from the blue line in manitoba, too.

i don’t have much else on him that’s not just uh, me gushing over how awkward he looks in pictures and his crooked smile i want to preserve in a snow globe and how he looks up to nico sturm and the jets did him really dirty and that he hugged his goalie at worlds like he wanted to squeeze the life out of him—

Oh I'm hollering at this, it's all so good.....I've appreciated his work ethic on the Cuda for sure and if he's struggling at all I really think it is because we have 500 defensemen and so many people aren't getting consistent playing time. Maybe now that we just sent half the dcorps to Wichita though he'll be able to solidify his place! I've been meaning to listen his Locked on Sharks episode for a while and keep forgetting, maybe I'll do that today while I'm doing horrible tasks. Thank you for this info!!

Also inquiring minds want to know about the Nico Sturm connection....if you feel inclined to explain the lore...

star wars devon levi! i know basically nothing about the man

i made a reference because i've never properly done that before, and wanted to have a go. as a consequence this took a long time. the lightsabres were actually the most taxing bits in effort, despite only taking an hour or two to design and draw

and as a sentinel! @lemondropbois thanks for the inspiration for all of this, i tried to reference both jedi sentinel designs, and hopefully the slightly more realistic face is recognisable? i didn't use references that well. i also took your advice for lightsabre size and colour, not sure about how i've done it though (i do like them on their own but the handle designs Do Not Match which i don't like)

THANK YOU to both of you for asking sorry I am replying to this a billion years late I am fortifying myself with a milkshake and answering some asks starting with this one. I don't actually remember what the meme said so I am just going to give you the outline of the plot

Mario Brent boba au...BASICALLY what if Brent broke up with Mario when he got traded to Carolina and he was a total dick about it bc he was like...the love of my life, my child bride, Mario Ferraro my one and only, he deserves a better life than taking care of some old ass broken down guy (Brent has at this point seen how Joe and Patty's bodies have just...internally combusted even tho externally they got hotter when they retired) and he's like I'm at the end of my career I CANNOT condemn a life of caretaking to the light of my life who is so young and so full of life. BUT HE'S A DUMMY BC MARIO WOULD CHOOSE HIM!! MARIO WOULD CHOOSE HIM EVERY TIME!! but he doesn't KNOW that so he breaks up with Mario in the worst timing (after sex) and leaves for North Carolina.

Mario obvi having the worst senior year of his life misses his boyf doesnt want to stay in the Bay doesn't want to move back to Toronto John is applying to Americorps in Arizona his life SUCKS....graduates and for several years he is so miserable having fucked up Grindr hook ups that are psychologically destabilizing, tries to have relationship or two with various SF boba baristas but he's just like i WANT my BOYFRIEND back. And Brent calls him at the worst possible times (drunk, after winning games, in the hammock in Sebastian Aho's backyard) and Mario never picks up and Brent never leaves a message which is even MORE destabilizing. Mario gets a job at Facebook and wants to die.

Then obviously the Canes win the cup and Mario is glued to the entire cup run obvi like it's BRENT he wouldn't miss this and when Brent raises the cup he like has to turn off the TV and go for a long walk in his dumb SF neighborhood that he doesn't even enjoy living in and ends up at the beach (ig he lives in Outer Sunset) and just stands in the water feeling miserable until he can't feel parts of his body and then goes home. Tries to sleep. Can't. Brent calls. He doesn't want to answer but he does.

This may be the one boba fic my dumbass GM can't nerf...I had another one abt Nick Cicek having a toxically bad hook up with Mario and then he must decide between Mario and Montana Onyebuchi. Then my dumb idiot GM traded Cheech and Montana refused to sign. This has happened to [checks notes] three different boba fics bc we simply cannot trust an NHL gm in this day and age...but Mario and Brent are already tragically separated so at least I have that going for me.

Maybe Mario's neighbors in his apartment in Outer Sunset are Mackenzie and Kaapo. And they own a purse dog named Magnus.....who's to say, really.

jokes aside, i heavily assume that they knew each other in passing before worlds this year, didn’t do research on that tbh, but he’s mentioned that he got to know nico better during the tournament (need a book about their off ice adventures honestly), and that it was nice to know someone in san jose who could help him - even if english is not an issue for him. as far as i remember leon was also early for the training camp and trained with nico, tomáś & co.

(in general nico is like, a guy a lot of young players seem to look up to. finding a way to stay in the nhl and even win a cup without being drafted is huge, and i wish mr. most-faceoff-wins nothing but the best as a sharky!)

This is so important to me....I love a Worlds connection even if they are on entirely different sides of the ice. Also love an older guy taking his younger countryman under his wing. I listened to half the Locked on Sharks ep this afternoon and him mentioning he got here early and got to skate with Karlsson who he looked up to really got me in my feelings!!

I hope someone writes a book about that specific Worlds team. They really seemed to have something special. Thank you for this lore drop 🙏

track & field, basketball and football in high school, but volleyball was My Sport. played club vball all through uni and only gave it up when covid hit
