Discussing some Thoughts regarding Wolfsbane and the future of the game below

So, as many of you know, Chapter Four's reception was somewhat mixed.

While no one is wrong for having a negative reaction to the chapter and sharing their feedback regarding it, it was also very much not an enjoyable experience for me and not one I care to repeat going forward. I write for fun, and fielding the update's reception was anything but: it made engaging with my own work afterwards very difficult, and there were many times where I wondered if I had messed up, if I wasn't cut out to write a more serious story and if I should abandon the project altogether. I'd only ever intended to write and share the prologue initially anyway, so it was already a far greater accomplishment than I'd ever anticipated I would achieve.

But I still love this story, and I don't think I want to abandon it. I do think I need to change how I do things to make the experience more manageable for myself, though. For a while I brainstormed a few different options, and ultimately settled on this: I think it would be best to no longer update Wolfsbane on a chapter-by-chapter basis. While the fact that the ending of Chapter Four left a lot up in the air was probably exciting for some, I also think that sense of displacement and not knowing what to expect prompted others to assume the worst and react in unfavourable ways.

I'd like for my work to speak for itself, and so I think I would benefit from sharing my writing publicly when it's at points where there are fewer loose ends to address. While there will definitely still be people who simply don't like the direction the writing takes - and that's totally fine - I hope that having some closure at the end of a given update will help to mitigate some of the potential stress that comes from reading an unfinished story and being left hanging, especially after more dramatic events. I don't know for sure that it will help anything, but I figure it's worth a shot.

With all that being said, don't expect the next update anytime soon. Between working on other projects and not really wanting to look at Wolfsbane for the last little while, it's seen very little progress, and I don't know when the next public update will be in a shareable state with this new policy in place. Thank you all very much for understanding.

Additionally, there's the matter of Garamond and romance in the game. I'm still getting messages complaining about the situation and, honestly, I'm just so exhausted and worn down by the whole topic at this point. I like romance in IFs a lot, but from day one I've kind of gotten this impression that it's the only thing a lot of people care about, or that a relationship without romance is viewed as lesser or not worth someone's time. One of the first asks I received was wondering "who are the romance options", rather than if there were any, and I've gotten several more like it since. That romance is treated as a given in the larger IF community - and often the focus, from what I've seen, even in non-romance games - saddens and frustrates me, as I believe there's so much value to be had in strong friendships that's often overlooked by adult-oriented media.

I've said from the start that romance isn't the focus of Wolfsbane, that I cherish the found family the characters have formed and want to highlight that before anything else, and at this point I feel that including what aspects of romance I have within Wolfsbane may have been to its detriment. Perhaps it's my fault for communicating it poorly, but to say from the start that romance isn't the focus and to receive a vast number of messages asking about it anyway has always felt... disheartening.

I do still believe that exploring the various kinds of love that people can experience - and the complications that arise from two individuals having very different desires/expectations in a relationship - can be very interesting and worth writing about in interactive fiction. It's a very real, very human experience, and was something I was eager to juxtapose against the idea of "monsters". But I also feel the need to reevaluate whether or not it ultimately has a place in this story, if its inclusion detracts from the overall message, or if I should change how it's approached.

These thoughts are very much incomplete and I don't know yet what, if anything, I'll alter or remove regarding romance in Wolfsbane, or how the trajectory of the story going forward might change. For now, just ignore what I said about a childhood friends Garamond having had feelings for the MC growing up; I don't know if it's an element worth keeping.

1. What do theysmell like?

Usually like soap ora mild cologne since hygiene is important to them. Catch them at the end of along day and they probably smell like old books or grass.

2. What is theirvoice like?

Smooth. I imaginesomething like Liam Neeson’s performance as Aslan in the Chronicles of Narnia.Common is their third language (behind Giant/Orc and Elven) so they speak itwith an unusual accent.

3. What is theirbiggest motivator?

Spite. They weretold they’d never amount to anything so now they want to be able to do everythingto prove the naysayers wrong. They were told being half-orc was shameful sothey embrace that side of them and take every opportunity to remind people whatthey are. They have a habit of intentionally antagonising people who look downon them and work very hard to exceed people’s expectations.

4. What is theirmost embarrassing memory?

They aren’t veryeasily embarrassed these days, though they were a lot more self conscious whenthey were younger. Especially when it came to trying to perform on par with theother orcs in the tribe and failing. Though embarrassing at the time, they lookback fondly on the day they were caught getting friendly with a noble’s son andchased through the estate halls in nothing but their underwear.

5. How do they dealwith/react to pain?

If it’s emotionalpain they either get quiet and try to play it off but you know something’s wrong with how sulky they are or they talk it out with someone. Physical pain isclenched teeth and heavy breathing but they try to hide just how bad it is andnot make a scene.

I believe that the results of these changes will be irreversible. I believe that unless we act, the future is bloody, dark, and will turn men into monsters. Why do I believe this? Well, that depends on you. A lot depends on the answers you have in your heart to the questions I am asking.

In a few short decades, European people will begin to become ethnic minorities in their homelands. This process will be the end of White Europeans as a race. There are many among us who think this is fine, that when people live in a particular place they become citizens of that place with all the values and beliefs that entails. This is a lie. Some say being The Great Replacement is a just reward for colonialism. Some say White people are all racist. Some say that non-Whites can never be racist. Some say that Whiteness is toxic and that equality means group-interest for everyone except Whites. Some say that it is a privilege to be White. I disagree.

The fundamental problem we face as communities, cultures, and nations of broadly European natures- that is all anglophone nations, all European nations- is that we do not recognize ourselves in the mirror. Like a dog, we look in the mirror and do not recognize ourselves. We do not consider race as part of our make-up. We think we are French, Italian, Danish, American, English, Scottish, Welsh, Irish, German. But I ask you- What are those names? What are they based upon? What do they mean? Is it really just a document given to you by the government, when we know there are distinct cultures that are produced by distinct ethnic European groups?

In a way, the Leftists are accurate in their belief that there is something racist about not seeing race. While you might tell yourselves that treating others without consideration for race is treating others fairly, in fact, what you are doing is denying the truth that people of other races recognize as easily as breathing.

Everyone knows you are a White person. Non-White people definitely treat you as a White person. It is you alone who denies your identity.

So, what does that mean, to have a White identity? On the surface, nothing much changes. Your life will continue as it always has. You will not turn into a racist- I promise! It is a little thing that should in no way affect how you treat your fellow man, in fact- the very idea that recognizing the differences between humans makes one a supremacist is insulting to all humans. Despite our attempts to create a purely civic society, race comes into play with great force when you think in demographic terms on a civilizational scale. this may be hard for you to imagine after decades of individualistic operant conditioning. Does this look like the future you want for your children? Does this look like the present you want?

You need to take responsibility, not just for yourself and your family but for the truth. The truth is that unless Europeans become organized and educated about the very simple consequence of The Great Replacement, there will be no Europeans. There will be little of Europe left that you would recognize; outside perhaps Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

You need to realize that there is no Europe without Europeans. That means that yes, it is okay to be White. Your ethnicity is just as valid as anyone else's- if we are not racists, how can it be any different? To recognize that is in the interest of yourself, your family and your country, not to mention the ethnic minorities in Western countries who benefit from the rights Europeans extend to all mankind.

You need to recognize that people who tell you that Europeans are a unique people with the right to exist are not racists. The racist is the one who tells you that your blood is evil, that you are a colonizer, that your existence is a cancer that is oppressing other races. Recognize it. Recognize that without you, there is no Europe. There is no America. There is nothing.

37. Favorite genre of music: uhhh my taste in music is so widespread and random! I love some punk, some pop, some metal, a lot of soundtracks and instrumental music and kpop as well!

38. Least favorite book: “Geen wonder dat moeder met de goudvissen praat” by Ed Franck and equally horrible is “Doornroosje’s honden” bij Willy Spillebeen . I had to read these like 5 years ago for school and I still haven’t gotten over the trauma. (In case you’re wondering, the titles translate to “No Surprise Mother Talks To The Goldfish” and “Sleeping Beauty’s Dogs”. The first is the diary of a teenage boy who’s vulgarly in love with his female teacher and it has the most distasteful illustrations. The Second book is about a little girl who’s mother is in a financially sticky situation and the child is confused about everything and eventually kills herself by taking a dozen of her mother’s sleeping pills so that she can be like sleeping beauty but be awoken by her dad. Both were an absolute pain to read.)

39. Favourite season: winter, but only if it snows. Otherwise autumn. (I mean I like them all but summer is too warm and sunny so it gives me headaches and in spring I sneeze all the time due to hay fever. Sure there’s less animals in the other two and the white clouds give me headaches as well, but it’s pretty and it gets darker doon :p)

40. Song that’s currently stuck in your head: “Shiny” from Moana XD

41. What kind of pyjama’s do you wear: My Totoro onesie! Or equally fluffy hp PJs. Or when it’s hotter I wear adorable shorts or baggy PJ pants and a top. (I get excited over PJ’s. I have waaayyy to many of them but it just makes me eager to go to bed and it’s so cosy and everything!)

42. How many existential crisis do you have on an average day: Like... 6?

43. If you can only choose one song to be played at your funeral, what would it be: Either “I Was Here” by Beyoncé or “What Do I Know” by Sara Groves

44. Favourite theme song to a TV show: the first Winx Club into!!

45. Harry Potter movies or books: Books! The movies are great but there’s so much depth that they’re missing! And some of the characters are just portrayed completely wrong (*cough* Ginny *cough*)

46. Favorite traditional food from your family: Either fries with roasted chicken and loads of veggies, or the family recipe cake that my mother taught me when I was 5!

47. Favorite decade from 1900-now: Uhhh how should I know? I’ve only lived in 2 decades! :p I suppose the now is best for me since equal rights and mentally ill people are no longer put in asylums and stuff.

48. Worst habit?: Putting off important things because of my anxiety or thinking “oh, I’ll respond to this later” and then never doing it.

49. Teach an old person to use the internet or stay for a week with a kid stuck in the “why” phase?: both could potentially be adorable and loads of fun! So it doesn’t really matter to me. 50. Who’s your favorite painter?: My grandpa! I’ve looked up to him all my life and not a single painter who’s work I’ve encountered in art history or musea can compete! (I’m biased, I know). Hello everyone!

I understand that this blog has been extremely quiet for a while now, and I'd like to extend a big 'thank you' to everyone's who's been waiting patiently and a quick 'it's all good!' to anyone who may have worried over my apparent absence, as well as a brief explanation for those who may be curious:

For those who don't know, I have two ongoing IF projects (Raiders of the Caravan and Wolfsbane) that I'm working on simultaneously, with Wolfsbane having its own separate side blog. At the end of June, I published Wolfsbane's most recent major update, and the chapter ended up receiving very mixed reactions. I spent about a month afterwards responding to the various feedback, and while a lot of it was very positive, some of it was very negative as well. It took a great deal of mental energy and pretty much all of my capacity for writing to respond to the numerous incoming messages, and it also did a number on my confidence and motivation regarding writing in general. By the end, I was extremely burnt out, and I decided I needed a break.

It ended up being a pretty long one, but I feel it's helped me tremendously. I'm happy to say that I'm back at it now and working away on RotC once more. It feels great to be writing again, and I'm looking forward to sharing more of it with you!

Additionally, I feel it's best that I dedicate all of my current creative writing energy to the game itself, so I've decided not to go back and answer the remaining character interview asks. Apologies to those of you whose asks remained unanswered, and thank you for understanding 💚

I've had to close the ask box because I currently have over 45 messages and they just keep coming. Apologies to anyone who wanted to send something in, and to those who will be waiting a while for a response. Finishing the update took a lot out of me and I definitely didn't expect... all of this lol, so while I'm doing my best to manage it, I'm just very, very tired.

I don't know if I'll be able to respond to all of the asks I've received individually, but I do think I've realised some things based on the feedback I've received overall. Essentially, I feel the response is generally split between two groups: those who really like and connect with monsters in media, and those who don't. I've gotten the impression that the latter group view the update as a tragedy and a punishment, full of loss and despair; whereas those in the former group view it as an exciting opportunity and wish fulfillment.

I want to say plainly that it is meant to be that exciting opportunity. I am part of that former group; I love monsters. The term is an endearment, not a pejorative. I love finding hope, escapism, comfort, and belonging in the monstrous. And I just think they're really darn cool, too. The world of Wolfsbane is not keen on monsters, but I myself am. It's why I wanted to write a story where your friends are monsters, where you learn about and connect with them. Where you recognise them as people despite what the world tells you.

I think the mindset with which you enter the world of Wolfsbane can severely alter how the events end up reading to you, and while I thought that my writing would have naturally cultivated a like-minded audience, I understand now that perhaps that was not the case, at least in part. To those who were expecting something different, I'm sorry that a story you used to love ended up disappointing you. Please understand that this chapter was not written with hatred or malice, and that it was not my intention to 'trick' you. It's simply a matter of you and I having very different ideas about what these events mean.

I hope this has helped to clarify things somewhat, and to those of you who have expressed your enjoyment and support of my work: thank you.
