So I'm working as a stage manager for Children's summer theater and one of my kiddos is a 15 year old transgender boy. He and his lil girlfriend auditioned together and he really wanted to work as a stage hand and I've been working with him starting out set building process, collecting props and more. He's a real bright and goofy boy, thinks on his feet and I cant wait to work with him.

It was during a break at rehearsal today that his girlfriend pulled me aside to thank me for respecting his pronouns and name. She told me there are quite a few people in their lives that dont respect his gender and that she happy someone like me who in is a leader/mentor position does.

It breaks my heart because he is a great boy and I've only worked with him for a few days. To know he's getting stifled by GROWN ADULTS who cant get their heads out there asses and see his talents that need fostered enrages me. It's also enrages me that he and his girlfriend feel that they have to be overly grateful that someone is giving them basic kindness and respect.

Kids are people that deserve respect, kindness and acknowledgement. No matter their gender, race, and more and I hate that that is actual a controversial thing to say to some folks.

The rage and grief I feel when transphobes will take some random transgender person living their life and make it the big news story of the week. Like a trans girl won homecoming queen and people are losing their goddamn minds. She’s just a kid. A teenager, who just wants to live a normal high school life and then is thrust into news coverage and right wing harassment because she wanted to participate in the most mundane high school activity ever.

It makes me terrified of ever doing something noteworthy. Any art contest or writing competition, or team sport activities could instantly get politicized because I dared participate in them. How dare they.

I cannot imagine being that poor Missouri trans girl. But god im scared to imagine it. Any semblance of success that a trans person gets is seen as stolen valor. We are never allowed to own our achievements.
