Tumblr media
What are the things you need to follow?
Ms. Sonu Goel, Founder of Cafe Converse, shares certain things that you need to follow. These are:
Understand the Basics: A solid foundation in grammar rules is fundamental. Invest time in learning the basics of sentence structure, punctuation, and common grammatical errors. Resources such as grammar guides, online courses, and language apps can be invaluable tools.
Proofread Carefully: After completing a piece of writing, take the time to proofread. Reading your work aloud can help you catch errors that might go unnoticed when reading silently. Additionally, consider using grammar and spell-check tools to catch any overlooked mistakes.
Grammar Guides and Style Manuals: Keep reliable grammar guides and style manuals on hand. These references provide quick answers to common grammatical questions and can serve as a handy resource when in doubt about a particular rule.
Practice Regularly: Writing is a skill that improves with practice. Set aside time for regular writing exercises and make a conscious effort to apply the grammar rules you’ve learned. The more you write, the more comfortable and adept you will become in avoiding mistakes.
Seek Feedback: Solicit feedback from peers, mentors, or writing groups. Another set of eyes can catch errors…

Why Many People FAIL to Achieve Fluency in English?
Tumblr media
Learning a new language can be a challenging endeavor, and English is no exception. Many individuals embark on the journey to achieve fluency in English but encounter various difficulties along the way. In this article, we will explore the reasons why people fail to get fluent in English and provide valuable insights, tips, and strategies to overcome these challenges. Whether you’re a beginner or have been learning English for a while, understanding these obstacles will help you navigate your language-learning journey more effectively.
Ineffective Learning Methods
One of the primary reasons why people fail to get fluent in English is the utilization of ineffective learning methods. Learning a language requires a structured approach that focuses on all language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Merely memorizing vocabulary lists or relying solely on grammar textbooks can hinder progress and limit fluency development.
▪ The Importance of Immersion
To overcome this obstacle, it is crucial to immerse yourself in the language as much as possible. Surround yourself with English by watching movies, listening to music, and engaging in conversations with native speakers. This immersion helps you develop a natural sense of the language and improves your pronunciation and vocabulary.
▪ Language Exchange Programs
Language exchange programs offer a fantastic opportunity to practice English with native speakers. By partnering with someone who is learning your native language, you can engage in regular conversations and mutually benefit from each other’s expertise. These programs provide a supportive environment for language practice and offer cultural insights as well.
Lack of Consistency
Consistency is key when it comes to language learning. Many individuals fail to make progress in English because they lack a consistent study routine or give up too quickly. Learning a new language requires dedication, practice, and perseverance.
▪ Establish a Study Schedule
To overcome this challenge, create a study schedule and stick to it. Set aside specific times each day or week to focus solely on your English learning. Consistency will ensure regular exposure to the language, allowing you to build upon your knowledge incrementally.
▪ Set Achievable Goals
Breaking down your language-learning journey into smaller, achievable goals can provide a sense of accomplishment and motivation. Celebrate each milestone along the way, whether it’s mastering a new grammar concept or successfully holding a conversation in English.
Fear of Making Mistakes
Fear of making mistakes is a common hurdle that many language learners face. The fear of sounding unintelligent or being misunderstood can prevent individuals from actively engaging in conversations and practicing their English skills.
▪ Embrace Mistakes as Learning Opportunities
Mistakes are an integral part of the learning process. Rather than fearing them, embrace mistakes as valuable learning opportunities. Understand that making errors is natural and necessary for growth. By actively engaging in conversations and seeking feedback, you will gradually become more comfortable with making mistakes and learn from them.
▪ Create a Supportive Learning Environment
Surround yourself with a supportive community of language learners who encourage and motivate each other. Join language exchange groups, online forums, or language learning apps to connect with individuals who share the same goals and challenges. Sharing experiences and supporting one another will boost your confidence and help you overcome the fear of making mistakes.
Limited Exposure to English
Another reason why people struggle to achieve fluency in English is limited exposure to the language. Lack of opportunities to practice speaking, listen to native speakers, or read authentic English materials can impede progress.
▪ Engage in Active Listening
Developing strong listening skills is crucial for language acquisition. Actively listen to podcasts, audio books, or watch movies and TV shows in English. This exposure will improve your comprehension skills and familiarize you with different accents and intonations.
▪ Read Widely in English
Make it a habit to read books, articles, and online content in English. Choose materials that align with your interests and gradually challenge yourself with more complex texts. Reading extensively will expand your vocabulary, enhance your grammar skills, and expose you to various writing styles.
Insufficient Speaking Practice
Becoming fluent in English requires ample speaking practice. However, many individuals struggle to find opportunities to engage in meaningful conversations or lack the confidence to speak in English.
▪ Language Exchange Partners
Practice with a language exchange partner, as mentioned earlier, can greatly enhance your speaking practice. Regular conversations with a native speaker or an advanced English learner will improve your fluency, pronunciation, and overall communication skills.
▪ Join Conversation Groups or Clubs
Seek out conversation groups or clubs in your local community or online platforms. These groups provide a supportive environment for practicing your English speaking skills and offer the chance to connect with like-minded individuals who share your language learning goals.
Why do you need to be fluent in English?

Learn English – Don’t Study HARD, Study SMART
In today’s interconnected world, proficiency in English is more than just a skill; it’s a necessity. As globalization continues to blur boundaries, the ability to communicate effectively in English becomes increasingly valuable. Whether you’re aiming for personal growth, academic success, or career advancement, mastering English can significantly boost your prospects.
However, the traditional approach to language learning often involves tedious memorization, endless grammar drills, and repetitive exercises, which can be both time-consuming and demotivating. Fortunately, there are smarter strategies that can help you accelerate your English learning journey without burning out.
Tumblr media
Cafe Converse, a leading online spoken English Institute in Delhi shares a few tips to learn English, the smarter way, not the harder way.
What are some of the smarter ways to learn English?
Ms. Sonu Goel, Founder of Cafe Converse, shares some smarter ways that will help you, these are:
Embrace Active Reading
To excel in English, active engagement with the material is crucial. It involves more than passive reading or re-reading. Instead of simply reviewing notes or texts, construct meaning by connecting ideas, creating examples, and teaching concepts as if you were the instructor. By doing so, you deepen your understanding and retention of the material. For instance, explaining literary devices to a friend, relating themes to personal experiences, or summarizing passages in their own words enhances comprehension and retention.
Know your Concentration Limit
Discovering your ideal study duration can transform your English learning from a one-size-fits-all approach to a personalized, efficient strategy. Using a simple stopwatch, start the timer when you begin studying and stop when your concentration wavers. Repeat this over a few days at various times. Understanding your concentration limits helps tailor your study sessions, ensuring smarter, more effective learning. This personalized approach

I have to wonder how many people celebrating AI translation also complain about "broken English" and how obvious it is something was Google translated from another language without a fluent English speaker involved to properly clean up the translation/grammar.
Because I bet it's a lot.
I know why execs are all for it—AI is the new buzzword and it lets them cut jobs thus "save" money and not have to worry about pesky labour laws when one employs humans—but everyone else?
There was some outcry when Crunchyroll fired many of their translators in favour of AI translation (with some people to "clean up the AI's work") but I can't help but think that was in part because it was Japanese-to-English and personally affected them. Same when Duolingo fired many of their translators in favour of LLM translation. Meanwhile companies are firing staff when it's English to another language and there's this idea that that's fine or not as big a deal because English is "easy" to translate and/or because people don't think of how it will impact people in non-English countries.
Also it doesn't affect native English speakers so it doesn't get much headway in the news cycle or online anyway because so much of the dominant media is from English-speaking countries and English-speakers dominate social media.
But different languages have different grammar structures that LLMs don't do, and I grew up on "jokes" about people speaking in "broken English" and mocking people who use the wrong word when it was clearly a literal translation but the meaning was obvious long before LLMs were a thing, too. In fact, the specific way a character spoke broken English has been a way to denote their native tongue for decades, usually in a racist way.
Then Google translate came out and "Google-translated English" became an insult for people and criticism of companies because it was clearly wonky to native speakers. Even now, LLMs—which are heavily trained on English compared to other languages—don't have a natural output so native English speakers can clock LLM-generated text if it's longer than a sentence or two.
But, for whatever reason, it's not seen as a problem when it goes the other way because fuck non-English readers or people who want to read in their native tongue I guess.
#and it's not like no people were doing translations so wonky translations were better than nothing#it's actual translators being fired for a subpar replacement#and anyone who keeps their job suddenly being responsible for cleaning up llm output rather than what they trained in#(which can take just as much time or longer than doing the translation by hand from scratch)#(if you want it done right anyway)#hell to this day i hear people complain about written translations of indigenous words and how they 'aren't english enough'#even though they're using the ipa and use a system white english people came up with in the first place#and you can easily look up the proper pronunciation and hear it spoken#but there's such a double-standard where it's expected that other languages cater to english/english speakers#but that grace and accommodation doesn't go the other way#and it's the failing of non-english speakers when an english translation is broken#you see it whenever monolingual english speakers travel to other countries and utterly refuse to learn the language#but if someone doesn't speak in unaccented (to them) english fluently in their home country the person 'isn't trying hard enough'#this is just the new version of that where non-english speakers are supposed to do more work and put up with subpar translations#even as a native english speaker/writer i get a (much) lesser version of this because i write with canadian spelling#and some people get pissed if their internet experience is disrupted by 'ou' instead of 'o' or '-re' instead of '-er'#because dialects and regional phrasing/spelling is a thing#human translators can (or should) be able to account for it but llms are not smart enough to do so#and that's not even getting into slang and how llms don't account for it#or how llms can put slurs into translations because it doesn't do nuance or context and doesn't know the language#if you ever complained about buying something from another country that came with machine-translated instructions#you should be pissed at companies cutting english-to-[language] staff in favour of glorified google translate#because the companies are effectively saying they're fine with non-native speakers getting a wonky/broken version
