Zayn hesitated just long enough to send the butterflies in Liam’s stomach into a frenzy, then nodded and turned away. He picked up his things, plucked his keys from a bowl on a side table, and opened the door. Quinn looked up at the sound and stood up quickly to follow. Liam grabbed his collar.

“Oh no you don’t, pal. You’re staying with me.”

“Thanks again, Li. I’ll call when I get in.”

“Please.”

The door closed softly behind him, followed by the sound of a car engine turning over. The crunch of tires on gravel slowly faded away, leaving Liam in silence, alone in the house of a man he wasn’t sure he knew anymore, if he’d ever truly known him at all.

“Zayn, you know? He’s so far out of my league, that I figured if I lucked into that, then… well, I’d go with it and damn the consequences.”

“Wait! No! Fuck that, Liam!” Harry’s sudden outburst had Liam staring at him in shock. “Zayn is not out of your league! Who the fuck ever gave you that idea? You’re kind, caring, compassionate, and loyal to a fault.”

“Harry - you’ve just described a labrador retriever.”

“Hey, Louis, it’s Harry... Styles... uhm, Zayn’s friend. And Niall’s, I s’pose. That’s why I’m calling. Niall said you might have a room to rent in your flat and that it’s available now? I need something kind of immediately, not too big, not too expensive. Niall said it could be what I’m looking for. So, uhm, if you’d, I don’t know, maybe give me a call back and let me know if it’s still available and how soon I can come by to give it a look and discuss things with you, that’d be great. I can pay the rent upfront, maybe buy some groceries. I cook, too, if that helps. I dunno. Just... uhm… yeah, give me a call back.”

Louis played the message again, then a third time. He saved the number in his phone, with a simple H to mark the contact, then played the message one more time. Disbelief gave way to cautious elation. He texted a quick reply to Harry that he’d call once he got home, then typed out a swift message to Niall.

Bless you, ya Irish cunt. I’ll change nappies on your firstborn for a month.

Zayn looked up. “I don’t think so. I might be teaching him dance, but it doesn’t negate how I feel about what he does.”

“Saving people’s lives and homes? Of course. Allah forbid he be so selfless.”

“Don’t be an arse.” Zayn settled back in his chair. “He beats people up for fun.”

“That’s a little simplistic, don’t you think?” Doni argued. “He fights in sanctioned boxing matches, under strict guidelines established by the boxing commission. He’s not street brawling after a few pints at the local. That’s hardly the same thing.”

While Liam learns to dance, Zayn learns the art of compromise, and along the way, they find each other.

And when tragedy strikes, Liam finds that Zayn’s love will help him face the shadows of his past, and give him the courage to believe in himself and his dreams for the future.

Just got an email from AMC A-list - they're really pushing this at every level. I've never been offered bonus points for attending a movie, and I've had A-list since it was first released.

AMC and Warner Bros are straight up BEGGING people to buy tickets. Sales have been low overall and theaters were banking on Harry's star power to drive up sales, but by the looks of this it did not.

idk y'all i wrote some words. @homosociallyyours this is for you. a taste of dirtbag harry. he's not even dirtbaggy. idk.

“I don’t want you for a night, Harry,” Louis said as he wrenched Harry's hands from his hips and pushed them into Harry's chest, grip tight around his wrists. Harry sucked in a sharp breath, heart thundering in his chest when Louis didn't let go, and instead leaned in, lips brushing Harry's ear as he whispered, “And you won’t touch me like you touch them.”

Harry huffed a laugh, his entire body flushing hot at the rejection, and he looked down at their hands tangled together and pressed against his bare skin, wondering if the blush heating his chest and neck and face was visible. The floodlights at the entrance to the marina barely reached where they stood, and the lights along the length of the dock were meant to illuminate the path without ruining the view.

“You don’t want me to suck your cock, Louis?” Harry asked, annoyed at the tremor in his voice. He looked away, focusing on their boats docked side by side—the contrast of the gleaming white and cool blue of Louis’ late model yacht and the dull green hull of Harry's ancient cabin cruiser beside it an excellent visual metaphor. Shaking off his agitation, Harry cleared his throat and turned back, holding Louis’ gaze and pitching his voice lower, “I could take every inch of you. You could fuck my mouth… My throat… I can make you feel good, Louis. Better than you’ve—”

“No,” Louis snapped, quiet but demanding, and Harry bit his lip hard enough to hurt. Water lapped at the pilings, the bumpers knocking the edges of the dock and against the boats, the air tranquil except for Harry's harsh breaths. Staring unabashedly at Harry, Louis licked his lips, and moved in closer, crowding Harry, forcing him to hold his ground or step back, and for a brief, brilliant moment, Harry thought he was finally going to be kissed. Then Louis shrugged, releasing Harry's hands, and said, “All or nothing.”

He left Harry standing there and returned to his boat. The lights on Louis’ yacht flicked off, and Harry gasped, holding a hand to his bare chest where Louis had touched him. Shaking his head, Harry tried to rid himself of the heavy, desperate want, but it clung to him.

An hour later and it’s still there, thrumming alongside his heartbeat.

I was tagged by @reminiscingintherain and @allwaswell16 to post a snippet from a fic. I just added another 3K to my @zaynsalbumsficfest fic, so have another snippet from that!

He’s been home for all of five minutes before he calls Louis. He knows that it’s late, that Louis has an early shift tomorrow, but he also knows that no matter what, Louis will pick up. Even when he has do not disturb on, there are some numbers that he will allow to come through, and Liam feels fortunate to be one of them.

“Li?” Louis’ voice sounds sleepy when he picks up, but alert enough that Liam knows he hadn’t fallen asleep yet. “What’s wrong?”

“I don’t know what I did wrong,” Liam whispers, curling up on the couch and wrapping Zayn’s favourite blanket around himself. “I - I thought this was going to fix it. I thought - Aiden was happy, and Zayn was happy, and I thought that’d be enough, but I’m not happy and Zayn yelled at me.”

“He did?” Louis sounds more awake at that, worried tone that Liam can’t quite place.

“Well, no,” he concedes, “actually, he got sort of quiet instead. Which is worse. I just don’t know what went wrong. He said he hated how incredibly decent I could be, and then he just told me that he was sleeping at Aiden’s for the night, and I - do you think he knows?”

Louis is quiet for a moment. “Knows what?”

“You know,” Liam says, “that I’ve been having these thoughts about them. That I’m a-” he whispers the last word, as though Zayn’s spirit is still lingering here and will pick up on it. “homophobe.”

There’s a soft sigh on the other end of the line. “Liam,” Louis’ voice is patient in a way that makes Liam’s stomach squirm uneasily, because it’s the voice Louis reserves for people that really frustrate him. He has an apology on the tip of his tongue, but Louis doesn’t give him time to say it. “I don’t think you’re a homophobe.”

“But I-”

“No,” Louis cuts him off. “Listen to me. I’m one of your best friends. I would know. You’re not a homophobe Liam. Not any more than I am, or Harry is. Sure, we all have to unlearn things, because society’s taught us to think a certain way, but that doesn’t make you homophobic.” He sighs again, gently. “I wasn’t going to say anything, but, Liam, have you ever considered that maybe the reason you’re feeling so upset about this is because you’re in love with Zayn?”

Or: Thirty year old Harry Styles goes to bed single on Christmas Eve, only to wake up on Christmas morning with a husband in his bed and a son down the hall.

As an avid One Direction fan fic reader, 2022 has been truly incredible! This may look like a long list for my favorites, but I read so many amazing fics this year that it was so hard to pare it down to just these. Please check out all the other fics I recced this year here! Below you will find fics that made me laugh or cry, brought me joy or filled me with emotion, and surprised or comforted me. I share this list not to say that these fics are better than the rest (although I think they're amazing), but to share ones that left a mark on me.
