In the Willamette Valley of Oregon, the long study of a butterfly once thought extinct has led to a chain reaction of conservation in a long-cultivated region.
The conservation work, along with helping other species, has been so successful that the Fender’s blue butterfly is slated to be downlisted from Endangered to Threatened on the Endangered Species List—only the second time an insect has made such a recovery.
[Note: "the second time" is as of the article publication in November 2022.]
To live out its nectar-drinking existence in the upland prairie ecosystem in northwest Oregon, Fender’s blue relies on the help of other species, including humans, but also ants, and a particular species of lupine.
After Fender’s blue was rediscovered in the 1980s, 50 years after being declared extinct, scientists realized that the net had to be cast wide to ensure its continued survival; work which is now restoring these upland ecosystems to their pre-colonial state, welcoming indigenous knowledge back onto the land, and spreading the Kincaid lupine around the Willamette Valley.
First collected in 1929 [more like "first formally documented by Western scientists"], Fender’s blue disappeared for decades. By the time it was rediscovered only 3,400 or so were estimated to exist, while much of the Willamette Valley that was its home had been turned over to farming on the lowland prairie, and grazing on the slopes and buttes.

Now its numbers have quadrupled, largely due to a recovery plan enacted by the Fish and Wildlife Service that targeted the revival at scale of Kincaid’s lupine, a perennial flower of equal rarity. Grown en-masse by inmates of correctional facility programs that teach green-thumb skills for when they rejoin society, these finicky flowers have also exploded in numbers.
[Note: Okay, I looked it up, and this is NOT a new kind of shitty greenwashing prison labor. This is in partnership with the Sustainability in Prisons Project, which honestly sounds like pretty good/genuine organization/program to me. These programs specifically offer incarcerated people college credits and professional training/certifications, and many of the courses are written and/or taught by incarcerated individuals, in addition to the substantial mental health benefits (see x, x, x) associated with contact with nature.]
The lupines needed the kind of upland prairie that’s now hard to find in the valley where they once flourished because of the native Kalapuya people’s regular cultural burning of the meadows.
While it sounds counterintuitive to burn a meadow to increase numbers of flowers and butterflies, grasses and forbs [a.k.a. herbs] become too dense in the absence of such disturbances, while their fine soil building eventually creates ideal terrain for woody shrubs, trees, and thus the end of the grassland altogether.
Fender’s blue caterpillars produce a little bit of nectar, which nearby ants eat. This has led over evolutionary time to a co-dependent relationship, where the ants actively protect the caterpillars. High grasses and woody shrubs however prevent the ants from finding the caterpillars, who are then preyed on by other insects.
Now the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde are being welcomed back onto these prairie landscapes to apply their [traditional burning practices], after the FWS discovered that actively managing the grasslands by removing invasive species and keeping the grass short allowed the lupines to flourish.
By restoring the lupines with sweat and fire, the butterflies have returned. There are now more than 10,000 found on the buttes of the Willamette Valley."

The C-Suite Landscape in Southeast Asia: A Gendered Analysis

Gender disparities within the C-suite landscape of Southeast Asia remain a critical concern. This article offers a gendered analysis of the region’s top-level management, examining the factors that contribute to these imbalances and highlighting the importance of fostering gender diversity in the corporate world.
A primary factor perpetuating gender inequality in Southeast Asia’s C-suite is the prevalence of deeply ingrained cultural norms and gender stereotypes (Madsen, 2011). Women are often expected to prioritize caregiving and familial responsibilities over professional pursuits, which can limit their opportunities for career advancement. By promoting work-life balance and supporting women’s career aspirations, organizations in the region can help to dismantle these barriers.
The “glass ceiling” phenomenon, whereby women encounter invisible barriers to career advancement, is pervasive in Southeast Asian companies (Azmi et al., 2012). This problem is further exacerbated by a lack of diversity in senior leadership, as women are significantly underrepresented in C-suite positions. The implementation of gender diversity targets and affirmative action policies can be instrumental in breaking down these barriers and fostering a more inclusive corporate landscape.
Mentorship and sponsorship programs are essential to the career development of women aspiring to C-suite positions (Carter & Silva, 2010). However, the scarcity of female role models in top management roles in Southeast Asia can impede women’s access to these opportunities. Encouraging women’s participation in leadership development programs and offering targeted mentorship initiatives can help to close this gap.
Networking opportunities play a pivotal role in career advancement, but women in Southeast Asia often face gender-specific challenges when it comes to building professional connections (Ibarra et al., 2010). By creating inclusive networking events and fostering connections among women in business, the region can promote greater gender diversity in its C-suite landscape.
In conclusion, addressing gender disparities within the C-suite landscape of Southeast Asia requires a multifaceted approach that tackles cultural norms, dismantles the glass ceiling, and promotes mentorship and networking opportunities for women. Through concerted efforts by organizations and policymakers, the region can foster a more inclusive and equitable corporate landscape.

It's safe to say that Grian's had enough.
All his labour is fruitless. He doesn't sleep, he doesn't eat much, too; his wings hurt from the lack of movement. He looks terrible: he hasn't shaved since he started fishing regularly. But it isn't necessary, really: he only sees his mirrored image in the river waves.
Besides, the only people he talks to are his nearest neighbours, or those who come to see the fool by the river.
Mumbo hasn't visited him once.
The last time they've met it all went... terribly wrong. So Grian decides to visit Mumbo himself -- humbly: the last prank was quite enough. Humbly, as an old friend would.
As Grian approaches, he sees Mumbo pulling a diamond out of his pocket--
and burning it.
Grian: What-- did you just do???
Mumbo: Hi, Grian. Well, I have... kind of a new practice.
Grian: Throwing money around?
Mumbo: Burning a diamond every time a bad thought comes up.
Grian: …
Huh, that's new.
Grian: You aren't glad to see me?
Mumbo: No, no, I'm-I'm-- glad. It's just that you have a… um. Your beard is overgrown. It hurts to see it.
There is too much in Grian: shock, indignation, and at the same time there's apathetic acceptance, which he has managed to get used to during this month of disappointments. Ren told him about it the other day -- but Grian didn't expect to feel this on his own skin.
Many hermits say that Mumbo's changed.
Grian: …huh. You know, I actually came to you to show it off.
Mumbo sighs loudly and burns another diamond.
Mumbo: I'm sorry, friend, this is unbearable.
Grian: Don't be. I understand. But you'll get used to it. As i did for looking at this…
Grian looks up.
Grian: … this thing.
Mumbo: --What?
Grian: Well, it's-- it's kind of your base, right? It just seems to me that your old projects were better. At least they fit into the landscape.
Mumbo: …
It doesn't take long for him to burn another diamond, and Grian smiles with satisfaction subtly.
Mumbo: Right. I get you. You don't have to continue this. What did you want?
Grian: Oh, no-no. How many diamonds do you have there? Is there at least ten more?
Mumbo: I said you don't have to continue this. I'm sorry for what I said about your... new look.
Grian: This is your new practice, isn't it? Go on. Look at me a little longer, maybe you'll burn a few more?
Mumbo: Grian!
Grian (laughing): Come on, come here. I can kiss you, if you want to be the poorest hermit.
Mumbo stares at him, quietly. Grian giggles with a sound of lump in his throat.
Grian: I wanted to talk to my-- old friend, but it seems he's not here at the moment. Please tell him that I miss him when he comes back.
He's been carrying his feelings for so long; every time Grian hopes that this time will be different -- and it's different now. But not how he ever imagined it.
It's not how it was, too. And it's started way before Ren's failure. Was it in the caves, as other hermits told him? Or when the new world has just been created? Or...
But it's not how it was back then. Grian knows it: somenting's different. Is it his fault, is it Mumbo's fault? And why--
Why had they been waiting for each other for a gruelling year if they don't even see each other now? When they meet, as distant neighbours -- why cannot they look in each other's eyes?
Grian: Well, goodbye then.
Mumbo looks away, pretending to do something with his tools.
Mumbo: Goodbye. And sorry again.
Grian leaves him.
