It's safe to say that Grian's had enough.

All his labour is fruitless. He doesn't sleep, he doesn't eat much, too; his wings hurt from the lack of movement. He looks terrible: he hasn't shaved since he started fishing regularly. But it isn't necessary, really: he only sees his mirrored image in the river waves.

Besides, the only people he talks to are his nearest neighbours, or those who come to see the fool by the river.

Mumbo hasn't visited him once.

The last time they've met it all went... terribly wrong. So Grian decides to visit Mumbo himself -- humbly: the last prank was quite enough. Humbly, as an old friend would.

As Grian approaches, he sees Mumbo pulling a diamond out of his pocket-- and burning it.

Grian: What-- did you just do??? Mumbo: Hi, Grian. Well, I have... kind of a new practice. Grian: Throwing money around? Mumbo: Burning a diamond every time a bad thought comes up.

Grian: …

Huh, that's new.

Grian: You aren't glad to see me? Mumbo: No, no, I'm-I'm-- glad. It's just that you have a… um. Your beard is overgrown. It hurts to see it.

There is too much in Grian: shock, indignation, and at the same time there's apathetic acceptance, which he has managed to get used to during this month of disappointments. Ren told him about it the other day -- but Grian didn't expect to feel this on his own skin.

Many hermits say that Mumbo's changed.

Grian: …huh. You know, I actually came to you to show it off.

Mumbo sighs loudly and burns another diamond.

Mumbo: I'm sorry, friend, this is unbearable. Grian: Don't be. I understand. But you'll get used to it. As i did for looking at this…

Grian looks up.

Grian: … this thing. Mumbo: --What? Grian: Well, it's-- it's kind of your base, right? It just seems to me that your old projects were better. At least they fit into the landscape.

Mumbo: …

It doesn't take long for him to burn another diamond, and Grian smiles with satisfaction subtly.

Mumbo: Right. I get you. You don't have to continue this. What did you want? Grian: Oh, no-no. How many diamonds do you have there? Is there at least ten more? Mumbo: I said you don't have to continue this. I'm sorry for what I said about your... new look. Grian: This is your new practice, isn't it? Go on. Look at me a little longer, maybe you'll burn a few more? Mumbo: Grian! Grian (laughing): Come on, come here. I can kiss you, if you want to be the poorest hermit.

Mumbo stares at him, quietly. Grian giggles with a sound of lump in his throat.

Grian: I wanted to talk to my-- old friend, but it seems he's not here at the moment. Please tell him that I miss him when he comes back.

He's been carrying his feelings for so long; every time Grian hopes that this time will be different -- and it's different now. But not how he ever imagined it.

It's not how it was, too. And it's started way before Ren's failure. Was it in the caves, as other hermits told him? Or when the new world has just been created? Or...

But it's not how it was back then. Grian knows it: somenting's different. Is it his fault, is it Mumbo's fault? And why--

Why had they been waiting for each other for a gruelling year if they don't even see each other now? When they meet, as distant neighbours -- why cannot they look in each other's eyes?

Grian: Well, goodbye then.

Mumbo looks away, pretending to do something with his tools.

Mumbo: Goodbye. And sorry again.

Grian leaves him.

i think that same crowd was the one that always complaining about buddie in a way that was like are we watching the same show? saying buddie was dead since season 4 and stuff (things you see in twitter shudders ) and like a few of the one that aren`t on all the tommy board are like still complaining that buddie is not canon when the road has never been cleared like i feel a lot of the people that got into the show JUST because of buddie don't actually care about the story because i'm all willing to wait until the end of season 8 if i had to to buddie canon as long as the story is good i want a full eddie queer arc (praying for demi eddie ), i want pining okey even if is just two episodes and then i want to see them take the step forward

Honestly, I wonder if we are watching the same show (I will never venture into 911twitter again that place is scary). All the pieces are in place for them to show us that Buck and Eddie are gonna get together, but this is still a slow burn. They're not gonna hookup at the wedding and be married themselves by 710. Buck needs to be okay with being bi, we need some movement on Eddie's side about his queerness. The chances of us getting a love confession or a kiss this season are so ridiculously low. Because their relationship needs adjustments before they go there. And they need to figure out some things as individuals. They are making these adjustments, we are seeing them talk more, they are touching more, best friending like never before and they seem to be ready to figure themselves out, but the show can't just all of the sudden get them together. I mean, they could, they could do a buddie begins, lock them somewhere and unravel everything there is to unravel in one go but they're not gonna do that. There's a lot to unravel. And this is a slow burn, they're not gonna do it the easy way (I hope). I kinda do think we might get something explicit in the sense it's gonna make it clear it's where it's going, but Eddie deserves a queer arc too. And we deserve to see some explicit mutual pining. For me, Buck being bi means they're going there so I'm just kicking back and enjoying the ride, more people need to learn how to do that. We already have s8 confirmation, they have nothing but time to flush this out. Buck has been canonically bi for 10 minutes, Eddie is still dating someone else, things need to be moved into place before it happens. I want pining. We deserve pining. To see them struggling with figuring out if they want to take a chance or not. Realizing they don't really have a choice in the matter and doing something about it. It's a slow burn. It's a slow burn that seems more real than ever now, but it is a slow burn. Castle said he loved Kate and they still took 2 whole seasons to get together after that. We're fine, they're just network slow burning not streaming pseudo slow burning.

A different anon, but on the topic of potential time jumps because that’s been a concern of mine as well. Not as much from the Buck/Natalia or Eddie/Marisol perspective (though to your and the other anon’s points, as an audience, I don’t feel like it would be ideal to be dropped into their 10-month long relationships).

I am concerned though how a time jump could alter plans they had for Buck’s character in general. I don’t know with all that happened in the finale, if that was the writers trying to wrap up on his “issues and development of the season” (if you will). But I had really been hoping they were going to explore more of the lightning strike/dying implications.

He kinda had one episode right after the fact for us to see he was struggling with it, but then it was pretty much dropped and not really explored beyond that? I was hoping the graveyard scene and Eddie’s line about “you haven’t been the same since… how could you be.” might be setting us up for more exploration in S7 and maybe Eddie helping Buck through that trauma as a bit of a role reversal from Buck helping Eddie through his trauma struggles in S5, but I feel like a time jump (and especially one that would put Buck in a 10-month relationship) would lessen the chances of them choosing to stick with a storyline that’s a result of a specific traumatic event (eg: the lightning strike). Guess we’ll just have to see though.

That's my main worry too, like, romantic relationships apart, a big time jump would complicate the timeline of Buck's trauma a LOT. Because they were setting something up and changed their mind halfway through and I was hoping they would not do a time jump and just deal with that because that plotline is in the middle and I want it to be resolved so badly. I think even the fact that Natalia is a death doula makes it seem like they wanted to explore his death, but let's face it, if he's in a relationship with her for almost a year and still hasn't dealt with it, he's never gonna deal with it, and it's an interesting potential plotline and I would be very upset if it was never explored just because they decided to do a time jump that's not really necessary.
