We leave this a few days on. Rosalie, or any of her people, have not come back - he doesn’t know exactly how things turned out with Marcek. He has told himself that he has no right to any sense of closure and is trying to let go of any expectations in that regard. He is just a tool, in the end. He’d been eager to return by the end of the excursion, but his headache has abated and now he feels restless. Lying in bed, he is thinking about the sounds of the dancing music drifting in from several rooms away - compositions he had never heard before, but familiar, apparently, to the partygoers. He is thinking about his untasted glass of wine and untouched hors d’oeuvres. Sitting in a study surrounded by books he has never read, titles he’d never heard of. He is thinking about how small his world here is. How small he has made it.

He is thinking of the warden saying that there is plenty of diversion to be had here. It is true enough. In the past he has declined opportunities to socialize with other prisoners, and he’s not sure if that’s what he wants. But he needs something. If they say no, then nothing changes. It still takes him some time to gather his courage: nothing changing feels like a net loss, not the status quo. It feels like a risk. He takes it, when Liralu comes in the evening to take away the remains of his dinner.

“Do you think it would be possible,“ he asks, unsure how many if his nerves are on display, “to arrange for me to go riding?”

There is a pause. Liralu isn’t looking at him when he asks, and doesn’t look at him to answer. “I will inquire, your grace.”

What more can he hope for?
