Whump Wednesday - 45 - Bill (2015)

Title: At Your Service [AO3]

Characters: Gabriel & Ian, Croydon, Philip II, Lope

Idea: While Croydon goes looking for Bill Shakespeare, Gabriel finds Ian asleep in the kitchen.

A/N: I've always wondered what happened to Ian after Lope punches him and this fic is one possible scenario of Ian and Gabriel's first proper meeting.

Prompts are open, so if you want me to write a story for you as well just send me an ask with the fandom, characters and your prompt. I’m writing for Ghosts, Yonderland, Horrible Histories and Bill at the moment.

At Your Service

So far, Gabriel could not say that she was very impressed by the Earl of Croydon. Not only did he seem to be a terribly dull man who believed himself to be much more interesting than he truly was, he was also not particularly bright. For his sake, she hoped he would turn out to be better at finding the lady’s husband than he was at writing plays.

“Just call for Ian if you need something,” he’d told them before he left to get Mr. Shakespeare. “I have no idea how he does it but he always knows I’m hungry before I do and has my favourite dishes ready to be served. Amazing, isn’t it?”

It was clear he had never set foot into a kitchen in his life and didn’t care to rectify that in the future. For that alone, Gabriel disliked him just a little bit more. She had been a servant once too, in another life lost to the past now, and she knew under different circumstances the earl, her king, even Juan and Lope would treat her and the work she’d be doing just as dismissively and ignorantly as Croydon was treating his servant. She would be invisible to them – as long as they had no need of her, that is. The moment they had, she would have to function, no matter what, and woe betide her if she dared to make a mistake or wasn’t fast enough.

“Now where did that little servant of his scurry off to?” the king mused a few minutes after Croydon had left. He looked around the room thoughtfully and cocked his head at the plates of wasted food littering the floor behind the table. “Hm, this doesn’t look half bad. What about it, lads? Some wine and food to celebrate our grand endeavour?”

Gabriel gave a half-hearted cheer along with everyone else even though getting drunk at an impromptu feast was the last thing she intended to do today. She grew silent as the king called for the servant – once, twice and then a third time with a bellow that rattled the windows – and winced when no one appeared.

Feeling the mood shift dangerously, she stood up from her chair and intervened before any heads could roll. “I’ll go look for him. Maybe he went to lie down after Lope greeted him so nicely with his fist.”

She sent Lope a withering glare and watched in satisfaction as he spluttered. Before he could open his mouth to argue, the king waved his hand towards the door, obviously bored, and said, “ Yeah, yeah, go ahead, then.”

Grateful to escape her present company for a few minutes, Gabriel bowed and hurried out of the room. She didn’t know the layout of Croydon’s house but she wagered the kitchen and servant quarters were located away from the huge, lavishly decorated rooms the earl usually frequented. So following her instincts, she went back to the front door and from there down the dark hallway that lead away from it. It had no windows and the candle stumps on the walls weren’t lit – Gabriel had a feeling she was on the right track.

There were two doors at the end of the hallway. The one on her right was slightly ajar so she gently pushed it open and poked her head through the gap. The sight in front of her was so unexpectedly sad it made her heart clench in sympathy: Croydon’s servant – Ian, she reminded herself – was sitting slumped over the table with his head pillowed on his arms and his eyes closed. Carrots and half-peeled potatoes lay scattered all around him, and in one of his hands he was loosely holding a knife.

He must have fallen asleep mid-cut, Gabriel thought. She took a cautious step forward into the room and looked at his sleeping face. Ian’s eyebrows were furrowed slightly, as if whatever he was dreaming about was distressing or worrying him, and above them she could make out an angry red welt in the gloomy light. She knew Lope wasn’t responsible for it – his fist hadn’t even strayed close to the servant’s forehead when he punched him. It didn’t make it easier to look at the blooming bruise under Ian’s eye Lope was responsible for or excuse his behaviour but fact was that he hadn’t caused that particular injury.

So who or what had?

Gabriel thought back to the state of the dining hall with its platters haphazardly pushed into corners, tables swept clean without thought and food all over the floor. It wasn’t hard to picture the earl throwing these things around in a fit, and even less difficult to imagine Ian getting caught in the middle of it.

Even though she didn’t know him Gabriel’s heart still went out to the young man in front of her. From the looks of it, his life was a hard one, even harder than hers had been before fate had intervened and set her on a different path – a path that had led her here. The shadows under his eyes spoke of late nights and early mornings; the frayed seams of his clothes told a story of a life of poverty and desperate attempts to stop it from falling apart, and the fresh blood on his doublet, right above his heart and under his ribs, was undeniable proof of recent violence against him.

Gabriel had seen many awful things in her life. Some of them still haunted her in her dreams; others she had buried so deep they couldn’t touch her anymore. But somehow the sight of this bedraggled stranger made her feel sadder than she had in a very long time. She had no idea what kind of man he was – whether he was gentle or harsh, kind or cruel – but she knew no one deserved a life where bruises accumulated over a matter of days, perhaps even hours, and exhaustion ran so deep there was simply no more strength left to resist the pull of sleep.

“Gabriel!” Lope called, his voice muffled by the walls between them. “Hurry up! We’re starving!”

You don’t even know what starving means, she thought grimly and forced herself not to ground her teeth in low-simmering anger.

Tentatively, she stepped closer to Croydon’s servant and gently pulled the knife from his hand. She had a feeling he would startle awake the moment she cleared her throat or tapped him on the shoulder, probably even violently so, and the last thing either of them needed was to get stabbed today – again, in his case, by the looks of it. So she placed the knife out of his reach and stepped back again to give him some space before she softly called his name. She didn’t want to wake him but, Better me than Lope, she figured.

Just as she had predicted, Ian jerked awake with a gasp. Pieces of carrot and potato flew wild as instinct made him blindly stumble to his feet. His chair clattered to the ground – a harsh noise in the heavy silence – and his eyes darted around in the room in panic as he flinched. The moment they locked onto her Gabriel held up her hands to show him she was unarmed and meant no harm. He still staggered a step backwards in fear, almost tripping over his chair in the process, and it didn’t escape Gabriel’s notice that he was limping.

“I am sorry,” she said, mindful to keep her voice calm and gentle. “I did not mean to wake you but the others are getting hungry and–“

“Wake me?” he asked. His eyes widened further as he took in the state of his dinner preparations. A look of utter despair crossed his face before he whispered, “Oh no. Oh no, no, no.”

He limped back to his chair, righted it and reached for the knife. His hand was shaking so badly Gabriel feared he would cut himself if she didn’t intervene.

“Ian,” she said softly. When he didn’t react, she reached over the table to still his hand. He froze.

“Please. I need to get this done,” he whispered without looking at her.

Gabriel tightened her hold on his hand and waited for him to meet her eyes. When he finally did, she offered him an understanding smile. “I can help.”

If possible, his eyes grew even wider. “Oh n-no, I couldn’t ask that of you, sir.”

“Miss,” Gabriel corrected him without thinking. “And you’re not. I’m offering. I did this kind of work before, a long time ago. I know how it is.”

Something changed in his face, then; subtly but beyond doubt. Gabriel didn’t know if it was her slip of the tongue or the revelation of her own poor background that made him look down at their hands and finally nod his assent. In the end it didn’t matter; she was just glad he did.

“Thank you,” she smiled and pulled up a chair for herself. Taking the proffered knife from him, she asked, “What do you need me to do?”

They worked quietly side by side for the next twenty minutes. While Gabriel proceeded to cut first the vegetables and then the hare into bite-size pieces, Ian carefully stirred the stew and added the ingredients to it, one after the other. Together, they finished the main load of the work just before Lope called for her again, sounding dangerously impatient. “Gabriel!”

“The stew is almost ready!” she shouted back before Ian could panic.

Ian gave her a look. “It won’t be for nearly half an hour.”

Gabriel shrugged and grinned at him. “Lope doesn’t need to know that.”

A small, shy smile appeared on his face then. It made him look ten years younger despite the shadows still bruising his eyes and the exhaustion weighing on his shoulders. He ducked his head and, after wiping his palms on his apron, shyly held out his hand to her. “Thank you. I – I honestly don’t know what I would have done without your help.”

“You’re welcome,” Gabriel said earnestly and shook his hand. She wasn’t surprised that she could feel every single bone under his skin. “Is there anything else I can do?”

“Oh no,” Ian hurried to say. “You’ve done more than enough already, Miss. The stew just needs to simmer now. No need for both of us to keep an eye on it.”

He called me Miss, Gabriel thought giddily, feeling warm all over.

He was right, though: most of the work was done and she had been gone too long already. Regretfully, she pushed herself to her feet. “Let me at least take some wine with me. That’ll keep them occupied until the stew is done.”

Reluctantly, Ian went into the pantry and gave her two bottles. “Goblets should be in the Great Hall.”

“All right,” Gabriel smiled, a little forcefully perhaps as she remembered the state the room had been in when she’d left it. “I’ll go keep them off your back, then. It’s been a pleasure working with you, Ian.”

“Likewise,” he stammered out, a little surprised. Knowing she’d dawdled long enough, Gabriel offered him one last smile and turned to go. He took an aborted step towards her. “Miss?”

She paused. “Yes?”

“I don’t even know your name,” he said bravely.

Taking in his battered face, the blush dusting his cheeks and the clear blue eyes staring hopefully at her, not the least bit dulled by the lot life had given him, Gabriel found her heart beating just a little bit faster. With a flourish, she bowed before him. “Gabriel Montoya. At your service.”

When she looked up, a small smile was tugging at his lips. “Gabriel.”

He breathed her name as if it was the most wonderful thing he had ever heard. No one had ever said it like this before, so softly and with a reverence most people only ever reserved for prayers. It made her feel both seen and cherished and she knew in her heart then that she would never forget this kind and gentle man who was so much more than the earl he worked for could ever hope to be.

Welsh traditions

For this page I wanted to explore the overall traditions of wales, for love spoon is a Welsh token for love and affection, and was traditionally hung on a wall beside the fire on a-bit of ribbon. The Welsh flag symbolises the Anglo Saxons, Merlin/ambrosius prophesies that the Celtic Britons will reclaim the island and push the Anglo-Saxons back to the sea. Another tradition is the Welsh lady On St David's Day in Wales, the tradition is for school children to come to school in the traditional Welsh costume of flannel, hats and of course the daffodil. The traditional flower is the daffodil and is worn on st Davids day which celebrates Wales patron Saint David. I have also included a traditional Welsh cake which is a sweet delicious cake. For this page I wanted to create a picture mind map in a sketchbook format to create a more engaging page layout.

ladies and gentlemen the annual post you never asked for

summoning plans!! (2024 addition because man I have a mild addiction and as a f2p I cannot afford to be broke over banners I do not actually care about that much and-)

feel free to use this as well, I have found that it is rather helpful!

here's the initial layout (subject to change per the usual)

My ramblings under the cut :) :

Cutting down from last year's eleven banners to five?! insane. this is due to a) really thinking about what cards are actually the most appealing in my mind and b) time constraints. I really only play prsk for half an hour a day (at most, sometimes I may go a few days without due to having a life (a shock)), so I realized this year that the time required to successfully acquire the cards I wanted was nonexistent. so we're being reasonable! I think I had to cut out little bravers, the valentines event, both of the Kohane focus events, the toya dragon event, the Kanade Zamza (so excited for song btw) event, light up the fire, holy shit this is a lot, the latest akito event, and the third-anniversary event?? I mean, that last one should have the dream pick, so obviously, I'll try to pull a little, but we'll see how the savings are.

A reminder that doing these is kind of just a way for me to personally organize my thoughts and that anyone is welcome to try this!! visually this just helps me a lot.

Okay, now some more reasoning (again half for my own benefit) to pull on each banner:

In the Corner of a Resonant Town (ALL OF THESE CARDS ARE SO PRETTY WTF)

Shiho: I technically have a limited of her among a couple of other four stars, but the theme of this whole set shot an arrow through my heart the moment I saw it. It's just??? I have no words

An: similar reasoning as Shiho, I have her fest card and two other normal ones, bUt HeY oNlY tHe LiM cAmE wItH a CoStUmE-

Ena: did I just say that I was skipping her fest because I gained a lim of her this year? yes. do I still want this one and will fight to acquire it? yes.

Miku: I actually have a couple of Miku four stars already, but I feel like seeing her on a rate up nowadays is becoming...rarer? probably due to the need to put other virtual singers on banners to balance out how many she had at the beginning of the game, but there's no doubt the frequency at which she's on banners is significantly less (unless she's the focus or smth). not to mention that because she has six versions of herself, it's even rarer for one that you might like a lot to be on a banner?? so far this is one of three Leo/need Miku four stars, and the only one that's limited, so you know damn well that if it's this pretty I'm going for it.

Our Escape for Survival

So quick note: because this one is only a month after Resonant Town, idk how much I'll actually save for it. time-dependent ig

Mizuki: hot take the 3D outfit isn't that good but the art of it is AMAZING. I saw a comment somewhere saying "wow they look like k-pop idols" and as a fan of the genre my fate was sealed. while it is a mizuki banner, it's a limited one, so I feel like there's a bit more reason to summon. again, it's time dependent, so if I can't it's not the end of the world.

Mafuyu: MAFUYU. this card was my computer wallpaper for a period of time so it'd be a crime not to try for it. I'm trying to only get mafuyu lims/focuses as I have an abundance of her (as a mafuyu collector any mafuyu is accepted), and this one is really nice, and the hairstyle is refreshing imo.

Luka: partly out of desperation to get some of the newer virtual singer cards that release (many of the ones I have are quite dated at this point), but also this is so pretty hello?? easily one of my favorite Luka cards if not my favorite. k-drama set lessgo baby

Saying Goodbye to My Masked Self

Mafuyu: at this point I've come to accept that I automatically pull on Mafuyu focus banners, and that's been quite successful! the only mafuyu focus I still have not claimed is the intersecting melodies one (one day... one day...), so I can say that all normal rate-up banners have gone quite well. while I haven't been following the story very closely lately, I know that this event is very important for her arc, and as bittersweet as it is her trained card in this set is relieving.

Kanade: tbh her and ena are here because this is just a mafuyu focus that I will summon on, but hello they're actually pretty?? the cards in the Snow White set were mid outside of mafuyu (so basically just mizuki and rin), so I would happily pull more even if I already got Mafuyu. also. I currently only have one kanade card, and it doesn't have a costume, so I'd like to fix that.

Ena: same reasoning as Kanade (except I have a solid supply of ena cards and I just find this set pretty)

N25 World Link Event (oh boy)

Since all of these cards are fantastic (even if they're not limited (?)), I'll just come out and say that I love them all and I hope that they come home. Genuinely was at a loss for words when I first saw them and I'm very excited for the event when it comes to global.

Now, here I was thinking: man, with the Sanrio collab, I think that's a good amount of gacha for the year!

And then the new year banner came into existence. Not even kidding it has altered my plans so much, I won't go back and edit each thing as that's confusing but list them below:

Resonant Town will stay the same, I only need to do 200 pulls to spark for someone I want (as I have ten stickers, I'm assuming that's still how it works? I've never saved enough to spark lmao)

May skip Survival depending on how much I spend on the previous banner. It'll probably end up being leftovers from Resonant Town if I have any. But from here on out, it's hardcore saving time!!

Masked Persona will have to be a pull-until-Mafuyu-and-then-quit because as much as I could use a Kanade four-star, I'm hoping to get that from the World Link event. At this point, I make sure to summon on Mafuyu banners because I have all of her standard focuses, and I've been pretty lucky with not having to spend too much to get her each time (fingers crossed it stays the same).

World Link event will depend on what happens over the first ten months of the year (damn, they really had to put the best banners in the last two months of the year didn't they), but I hope to spend a bit on this one. Then again, there is the chance to get them on other N25 banners, so even if I couldn't get all of them I wouldn't be too worried.

Sanrio Collab (not pictured) is still a must!! If I have to limit the World Link event for this, then I shall! It presents the opportunity to pull for characters I don't usually want to (Saki, Airi, and Emu), so I'm looking forward to it!

New Year's Banner......all of these characters are stunning (and Mafuyu is a 3-star and an amazing one at that, literally better looking than some of the earlier four stars), so...I really don't have any words

Obviously, as the year goes on, I'll see how I feel about these sets, but I'm pretty happy that I managed I've managed to cut down on how much I want to summon (it's like a diet guys). Again, I put my thoughts down here not only because doing all of this rambling helps my thought process but also because I think it's helpful and encourages others to use it if they're unsure of what they want to pull on!! Happy New Year's, folks, I hope 2024 is a good one !!!

Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics by Dolly Parton with Robert K. Oermann

The Quote: I'm a singer, an entertainer, and a business woman. But if I had to choose just one thing to be, I would choose to be a songwriter. I could happily just sit in my life and write songs forever, enjoy life, and write songs. The songs lead to everything else. Everything that I am starts with that song. — Dolly Parton

Full disclosure, I'm not known as a fan of Dolly Parton's music, her business acumen and her philanthropic work absolutely but not her music. I come to this something of as an outsider. So why read it? This appealed to it as a unique look at an influential woman, I'm not sure I'd ever seen anything like it anywhere. After reading that opinion didn't change... To me this is a one of a kind biographical work, there isn't exactly a plethora of songwriters who could replicate this. The magic ingredients are a long successful career, variety, personality and some memory of the stories attached to songs (is that really a given?). This is a fantastic book. It is well worth reading even if you aren't a fan. It is a lovely way to see how someone's life can change, how the world can change over time, and the breadth a single person can write.

On the layout of the book and order it is smart. There are 14 sections. While they initially appear to be by time from they develop or actually by a theme. They're Singing My Songs is looking at the covers and collaborations through her career, The Grass Is Blue is a look at her turn to bluegrass after the pop scene turned its back on her, Porter Wayne and Dolly Rebecca is a look at her turbulent times with Porter Wagoner who had a major hand in launching her career. There are some stunning inclusions in the images. Pictures of the original lyrics, costumes, some rare photos and album covers as they will aid the story. It all blends together so very, very well.

Given the personal nature of the stories I'm choosing not to critique the writing or stories at all. Just have some comments from my reading.

The Bridge is a suicide track written quite early and it's beautiful.

My Blue Ridge Mountain Boy has Dolly's husband Carl on the cover and that's fantastic. Most people don't realise he's been on one of her covers. Dolly has been married to Carl Dean since 1966. I appreciate Carl. Carl doesn't go to any of Dolly's black ties events with her, ever since the first one. That's not his scene it's hers. "I was maintaining a home life. It was a good thing my husband, Carl, has always been such a loner. You know, he doesn't want to be around anybody but me anyway, and he loves to be home. So that worked out time." (p.77)

But whether it's a love affair or not, you're all in, in the relationship. Whether it's sexual or whether it's just passionate, you are connected. It's a love-hate relationship. It is a marriage, of a sort. (p.79)

Jeannie's Afraid of the Dark leads to Dolly talking about the loss of one of her younger brothers. The one who would have been "her baby" to care for.

I've killed a lot of puppies and kids and ladies in my songs. I've killed myself a few times. I don't want to do it in real life, but I can do it in a song. You're safe doing it that way. (p.89)

Dolly is an incredibly loyal woman, you pick it up in the people she keeps around her. Dorothy Jo, Judy Ogle, Don Warden. She inspired such loyalty in Warden that he left Porter Wagoner to join her in their acrimonious split.

I Will Always Love You. It can sometimes be so hard to remember this is a cover. Elvis wanted to cover it, Precilla claims it was stunning. What stopped the recording was surprise, surprise and licencing issue (the company wanted more than Dolly was willing to give).

The sheer diversity of her lyrics was startling as she addressed suicide, adultery, insanity, drugs, illegitimacy, poverty, death and more. Her songs have been populated by orphans, alcoholics, prostitutes, preachers, vagabonds, widows, gamblers, ghosts, moonshiners, senior citizens, outlaws, hermits, and many other assorted characters. — It is this very diversity that makes her music appealing there is a song for everyone. (Robert K. Obermann, p.107)

Alcohol is the number one killer. A lot of people realize that it's like a drug you can become addicted to. It's so easy to get, and it seems so innocent to have a beer or a cocktail. I was looking at reviews of Songteller after I'd started reading I was looking at reviews and comments on GoodReads there seems to be a decent consensus that the audiobook and the physical book are substantially different. Dolly Parton reads her own audiobook according to Amy | Foxy Blogs's review the audiobook can feel more like a podcast. It can be more slightly more wandering though it remains naturally positive. Amy suggests both reading the book and listening to the audiobook. There are several playlists on Spotify playlists (including this one by Zachary Hoyt) collating as many of the songs as possible. I would think it might be a potential alternative to the audiobook for those who aren't a fan of that kind of experience. Or possibly just as a different way to experience the book. Especially good for those who aren't die-hard fans or who just want to be reminded of the songs. I will say one thing that may push people to the audiobook (just over 5hrs) while the hardback is 30 x 25cm and 2.5kg, it can be a tad unwieldy, it's more like a coffee table book.

2 dreams today and they're both weird. In the first one, I was in... well I'm not sure what but it resembled a hospital room with a fucking bar. The beds were all in a row under one wall and the bar stretched across pretty much the whole room. It wasn't anything special, just a bar made out of medium-toned wood. All the way to the right of it, there was a door leading to a room where my brother's friend was. It might've been a specific ex friend but not too sure. We helped him clean up his toys n stuff. I remember confusing his apple pencil for mine but then I saw a giant crack in it and went "oh yeah, it fell off various heights multiple times". I picked up mine which only had a small crack in the cap, not present irl. It's very hard to pinpoint the continuity in this dream but I think that next there were preparations for some contests like most... charged battery? And most cooked steak? What.

Well, I had mine prepared, some object charging for hours upon hours until it showed "E" instead of a percentage. There was a dude that was gloating about his charge being the best but I was sure I'd win. The steak was in a small roasting box, also plugged into the wall. Didn't burn despite being cooked the entire day, dream logic. While we were waiting for the contests, a dude showed up. We decided to go absolutely rabid and start yelling his name over and over, I think it was a polish name starting with a k. Maybe Karol? The room was flooded and every time someone yelled his name a raft appeared. The goal was too fill up the entire room. Never achieved it but oh well. The rafts only spawned in a grid so that was interesting.

The time came, the contests. I had to leave early though and I started crying because I really wanted to participate. I unplugged my stuff and started eating the steak. Mom decided to ask if I could submit stuff early still and the lady running the bar said yes but the stake was already done. However, she somehow found a teeny bit of meat on all the fish bones in the steak. Why the steak had fish bones is beyond me. I think I won? Somehow? Well, we left anyway. Aaaand flew back home on our dragons. The flight only took 5h but we did stop on an island to sleep.

Not sure when this happened but it definitely is a different dream, just with a transition. I was in the hospital room and discovered sonic frontiers was available on my ipad so I downloaded it and started playing. I had an old ps1 controller plugged in and it had its own config menu for some reason. The graphics for it looked like an old pc shooter and you could overlay those on anything anytime. The game itself started off with me playing as Shadow and immediately dropping into lava multiple times. I got around it and found myself in a facility with some special springs I though were really cool. Forgot what they did but they were cool. I made it out eventually and it switched to Sonic who was... very mentally impaired. Always crying and stumbling thought he could definitely run. He was completely non verbal and just made sounds. Every cutscene in the game ended with the camera being struck with a big rock, except one where sonic was standing on the edge of a high up building mumbling to himself while someone else tried to communicate. The camera still got a face full of rock but it went through instead of blacking out. The levels were similar to a demo I played waaaay back in a dream from like half a year ago. Lots of sidestep sections n stuff. The game also had soldiers from forces scattered around. You could attack them but if you did you lost a life for being a dick.

Lastly, little bonus I suppose. I was in a room with a similar layout to the hospital but it was all wood and bamboo with red accents. I belonged to a group of warriors or something, ninjas but different in a way. There was something about gathering in one spot near the door but I forgot
