Vlog 15: Docklands and AFL
Good day everyone!!! Happy Friday, how are you guys today? Happy May to everyone as to what April showers bring May flowers. Today will be the last blog for a while as I get ready for finals here in Australia. At Susquehanna, I know a bunch of people are getting ready for final exams, presentations, and papers. So for today final vlog I will share my experiences in the Docklands and tell you a bit about the AFL.
So on Sunday, I knew I wanted to take a bit of a break from doing an essay from one of my classes so I decided to explore the Docklands for the first time. The duration of me getting there by tram took a hour which wasn’t bad as I got to see the city and the beautiful view with the pier in the background. The first stop I went to was their monthly market which happens every Sunday of each month. The market was really cute where there were little companies selling jewelry, stickers, food, etc. What I got are some really fun stickers that I put on my laptop or my IPad and a ring for my mom for Mother Day’s/Birthday Gift. After that I mostly just explore the mall. The mall was pretty empty that day when I went there, so I left after I finished fairly quickly and went back to exploring the docklands. There is a Ferris wheel at the Docklands which I was excited to go and possibly ride, but it closed permanently but I still think you should see the Ferris wheel, it is pretty cool. After seeing the Ferris wheel, I went to a restaurant just to eat a quick lunch while also enjoying the view of the wharf. I recommended that you get lunch by the water because the view is so pretty to look at while enjoying your lunch.
Another thing that I try is Australia Football. Australian Football is a popular sport here in Australia where it reminds me of soccer but instead of using primarily your feet, you're using your hands. I went to a clinic a few days ago and I had so much fun. The Australian Football team taught us some of the skills and rules of the game. Even though this was my first time playing the sport, I felt I did pretty well since I used to play soccer which helped me be aggressive to other players and swim where I have my endurances which is great when I’m running or tackling another player. It felt great to be playing a sport again, even though I exercise I’m a huge sport-fan and it felt great to be playing a new sport but also learning a part of Australian culture at the same time. Fun Fact tomorrow I'm going to my first Australian Football League game (AFL) at Marvel Stadium. On Sunday, I saw the North Melbourne Kangaroo versus St Kilda. So that it for the final blog of my study abroad and thank you for reading my blogs I hope you had fun reading them as I go explore Australia, and maybe you hear from me again someday.

Vlog 14: Navagating Campus and Locations
Hello everyone, happy Friday, how are you guys? I know back in Susky you guys have 2 more weeks to go until finals, I’m ¾ done with my semester. So in today's vlog since I been on La Trobe Bundorra campus for 2 months now, today's blog will be about the places on campus you can go and study.
La Trobe is a pretty big campus with multiple buildings for different subjects where they focus on social sciences, education, humanities, health sciences etc. During orientation week depending on what your studying at La Trobe University in Bundoora, you go with one of the subject buildings to know what the subject (courses) are like and how the tutors ( teachers/professors) are in those subjects. During orientation week or when you have freetime, I suggest that you take a trial run to where your classes are so it makes it easier for you to go to classes for the first few weeks since you're new to the campus. If you don’t its okay, I would also suggest that you get a planner/little notebook and out the day that you have the class and the building and room you're in for the first few weeks. Another way you can get directions is by the library where the first week of classes they had map of the campus which makes it easiest for studies on campus.
One of the areas I spend my time the most on campus is The Agora, The Agora is a place where students hang out to work, eat, and hangout. In the Agora area their the library where I spend most of my time there studying for my classes, the Agora express which is the little convenience store on campus, the book store where you get you books for classes and la Trobe merchandises, and a food court where sometimes I get something to eat or drink before or after classes. I usually get food at B&B nation which is a little cafe where I usually get a pastry and coffee and Ground coffee where sometimes I get desserts at times which are delicious.
Another place I usually hang out and do work is the Chisholm Common room. The common rooms have 2 tv rooms, one is on the ground floor where you can watch netflix or any other streaming service and the other is upstairs where it is the same thing but a bit bigger and gives you and your friends a bit more privacy if needed. Also downstairs is an air hockey machine and soccer gumball machine. I played both of them with a few friends during the end of orientation week. You can also do laundry on the first floor sometimes if the laundry room is full near my tower, which gives me great opportunities to do some work there too. Their also a little fitness room where you can do a mini-workout which is mostly weights. While upstairs there another room where their a couch and a bunch of board games. In a medical first, scientists have hindered the growth of bowel cancers in mice by harnessing immune cells in the large intestine.
One of the most exciting new cancer treatments is immunotherapy, which works by training the body's immune system to identify and destroy cancer cells.
However, most current immunotherapies only benefit a small minority of patients with bowel cancer – fewer than 10 percent.
"We have discovered that an important group of immune cells in the large bowel – gamma delta T cells – are crucial to preventing bowel cancer," says immunologist Lisa Mielke from the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute at La Trobe University in Australia.

AN APULIAN RED-FIGURED VOLUTE-KRATER
ATTRIBUTED TO THE BALTIMORE PAINTER, CIRCA 330-320 B.C.
36 ¼ in. (92 cm.) high.
The Baltimore Painter, according to A.D. Trendall “is the most important and significant of the later Apulian vase-painters…”. He decorates a wide range of shapes, both large and small, and many feature multi-figure mythological scenes framed by elaborate ornament. The upper register of the obverse on the present example has an assembly of gods, including Pan, Artemis, her brother Apollo with a swan on his thigh and a deer to his left, and Aphrodite. The lower register has five offering-bearers around a laver. The obverse neck is centered by a frontal head of Io amidst florals. The reverse has a youth seated within a naiskos surrounded by four offering-bearers. An unusual feature of the present vase is the fish and other marine creatures encircling the foot.
While this vase was never published by Trendall, he became aware of its existence late in his life, since a friend had sent him a copy of the 1988 exhibition catalog from Nara. The catalog is preserved in the Trendall Research Centre for Ancient Mediterranean Studies at La Trobe University, accompanied by his hand-written note attributing this to the Baltimore Painter.

Metallic bond between two beryllium atoms made for the first time
A quartet of chemists at the University of Oxford has, for the first time, found a way to get two beryllium atoms to bond with one another. In their paper published in the journal Science, Josef Boronski, Agamemnon Crumpton, Lewis Wales and Simon Aldridge, describe their process and how they managed to do it in a safe way—and at room temperature. Jason Dutton with La Trobe University, has published a Perspective piece in the same journal issue, outlining the work done by the team in England.
Beryllium is a strong but lightweight, alkaline earth metal. It is also brittle.
Beryllium only ever occurs naturally when mixed with other elements, forming minerals. It is often found in gemstones such as emeralds. And it is used in a variety of applications, from telecommunications equipment to computers and cell phones. It is also mixed with other metals to create alloys used in applications such as gyroscopes and electrical contacts.
For many years, scientists have thought that the element could be even more useful if a way could be found to force beryllium atoms to bond with one another. But until now, it was not possible.

Vlog 7: Australia Currency
Hello everyone Happy Friday back in the U.S.A or wherever you are in the Northern Hemisphere and happy Saturday here in Australia or anywhere here in the Southern hemisphere. How are you guys this week? I know back in Susquehanna you guys are about to go off for spring break and I hope mid-terms went well for you guys too. I do wanna address later that happened on Tuesday this week so once you finished reading the vlog I want you guys to read the message that I’m going to type out. Let's get that out of the way for now so one of the interesting and unique things I've learned is the currency in Australia which is very different in the U.S.
Instead of saying dollar bills in Australia, they said notes. I never realized that they say notes here until yesterday during my Politics, Philosophy, and Economics class. The currency system is a bit different here too. So fun fact of the day coins were in the U.S are at a value less than one dollar but here you have 2 coins that are worth 1 and 2 dollars. Also, Australia doesn't have a coin for a penny so if you need to pay one more cent, you may need to pay with a bigger coin. The bigger the coin the less value, while smaller the coin is the more value of money it is worth. So it is vice versa here than in the United States which I found pretty cool. With actual notes (dollar bills in U.S term) they can span from 5 notes to 100 notes which is similar to what I’m used to with the exception that I get a 1 dollar bill instead of a coin and 2 dollars in a coin.
With my experiences when I first bought something using notes I was a bit confused at first because I didn’t know if the cash machine gave me the right amount or change or not. The way I learned how Australia currency works is by the cashier at the little convenience store on campus where they show me that the bigger the coin the less value that it has while the smaller the coin it worth more. Also before you started traveling I would look up Australian currency overall since the value of money is different for each country. So for 1 dollar in the U.S would be 1.52 dollar in AUD meaning in Australian money. So I hope this short little vlog will help you understand how each country has a different currency where the value of dollars and coins are affected. So if you go to Australia someday I hope this vlog helps you understand more about its currency system.
I know the vlog is shorter than usual, but I do want to address this before you go. Back at Susquehanna on March 7th there was a racially charged incident where the Black Lives Matter Flag outside of Deg was vandalized. As a student of color this angered me since it makes me feel that POC aren’t being protected on campus and I’m disappointed to say that I’m not surprised either. Susquehanna needs to do better; the Susquehanna community needs to do better because we have people on campus who don’t accept us just because of our skin color. This is coming from a POC who currently studying abroad and when a few of us including me come back on campus in the fall some of us will feel uneasy because past incidents have never been dissolved and with this incidents student of color including myself are currently afraid of the unknown based on multiples incidences of not being accepted on who we are ethically and biologically. I just had to put this statement out there for anyone reading this. SPREAD LOVE NOT HATE, LOVE IS MORE POWERFUL THAN HATE. For all my Susky river hawks enjoy spring break and I hope midterms went well for everyone.

Bisexual Visibility Day (also known as Celebrate Bisexuality Day) was first officially observed on 23rd September 1999, at the International Lesbian and Gay Association Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Twenty years on, is there still a need to increase Bi Visibility?
I was born and raised in a small country town approximately 80km west of Brisbane, with Ipswich being the closest major hub. I remember Ipswich being (in)famous in the media on several occasions. As I navigated my teenage years, I always felt like I was different to everyone else or that I didn’t fit in. I could never answer the one question that was constantly tormenting my thoughts – why?
Now at 27, I’ve realised that sexuality wasn’t discussed in the environment I grew up in. The occasions that I did hear someone talk about bisexuality were always negative. I was told that bisexual people were just going through a phase, confused or greedy. I was told that bisexual people (especially women) were promiscuous or more likely to cheat. Bisexual people face numerous stereotypes and negative assumptions. I should know, I’ve heard them all. Unfortunately, it’s not just me. According to the 2019 AWEI Employee Survey, nearly 30% of Bisexual respondents hearing or being made personally aware of negative commentary, jokes or innuendo targeting the bisexual community and other LGBTIQ people within the last year.
Growing up, I also never saw myself in anyone else. I wasn’t aware of any television or movie characters that were bisexual. Or if they were, they were portrayed in a negative light. Icons ‘Bicons’ who had come out as bisexual, such as David Bowie and Freddie Mercury, consistently had their identities erased. Bi-erasure is a pervasive problem in which the existence or legitimacy of bisexuality (either in general or in regard to an individual) is questioned or denied outright.
Fittingly, visibility for Bisexual respondents is extremely important:
89.47% say that LGBTIQ inclusion initiatives are important to an organisaiton’s culture
80.61% say that out role models are important to their sense of inclusion
77.49% say that Allies have made a difference to their sense of inclusion
33.10% say that there could be more visible signs of inclusion (ally signs, flags, network posters)
The need to maintain and increase visibility and inclusion for bisexual people is not only the right thing to do, but necessary for the overall health and wellbeing of the bisexual community. Biphobia, bi-erasure and not being out has been found to be associated with poorer mental health. The Who I Am study, the largest study of bisexual people in the world to date, led by La Trobe University, has examined why bisexual people experience higher rates of psychological distress than heterosexual and homosexual people.
The study found sobering statistics:
One in four have attempted suicide;
Nearly 80% had considered self-harm or thought about committing suicide;
Over 60% have high or very high current psychological distress, with 40% reporting having had depression in the past; and
Transgender and gender diverse bisexual people experienced even poorer mental health and these findings will be released in the coming months.
The study instigated Bi+ Australia – the first national organisation set up to improve the mental health of bisexual Australians through support, education and research.

Linguistics Jobs: Interview with an Artist
This month’s Linguistics Jobs interview is with Lucy Maddox, an artist based in Melbourne, Australia. You may recognize Lucy’s work from Lingthusiasm, a podcast enthusiastic about linguistics. In this interview, Lucy shares how her training and a linguist influences her work as an artist (often in unexpected ways). You can find Lucy on Instagram at @lucymaddoxart or on her website.
What did you study at university?
I did a Bachelor of Linguistics at the University of Pennsylvania (graduated in 2008), then did a Master of Applied Linguistics at the University of Melbourne in 2014. A few years later, I went back to school, but this time to a TAFE, Australia's version of technical or vocational school, to study visual arts. I felt like the workload was much higher for my visual arts program than for my undergrad or graduate studies!
What is your job?
I'm an artist, which generally means I do about 5 different jobs. To pay the bills I write visual arts curriculum for TAFE institutes in Victoria, and I also teach painting and drawing at the Victorian Artists Society. I'm an exhibiting artist so I spend time creating work for exhibitions and applying for art prizes. I also create art and illustrations on commission, such as the work I do with Lauren Gawne and Gretchen McCulloch for the Lingthusiasm range of merch!
How does your linguistics training help you in your job?
It's been really exciting to see how two totally different worlds - linguistics and art - actually feed into one another. In terms of my own practice, my paintings are often related to gesture, body language and hands. More generally, art is influenced by linguistic studies in terms of understanding it as a series of symbols and communication devices. Who knew semiotics could be so artsy? I've also really enjoyed getting to create work that marries my two areas of study. In addition to the work with Lingthusiasm, I've also been working with Dr. Gawne on a series of hundreds of updated gesture illustrations to accompany her work at La Trobe University. It's shocking how old-fashioned, gendered, Euro-centric and downright ugly current gesture illustrations are. (For instance, see François Caradec's 2005 "Dictionary of Gestures.")
What was the transition from university to work like for you?
I graduated in 2008 which was probably the worst time to look for a job. My first job out of college was working for a medical journal reading and editing manuscripts. It was a nice first place to work but it wasn't a topic I was passionate about. I ended up moving to Seoul to teach English for a year, then moved to Australia. I taught English as a Second Language for about 10 years before moving into art. Happily, this meant that I got to use my linguistics skills in my everyday life, writing the International Phonetic Alphabet on the board and even drawing my own anatomical mouth diagrams to illustrate the differences between sounds like /r/ and /l/ to struggling students. However, eventually I realised what I really enjoyed about the job was the teaching and connecting with students, rather than English itself, and I returned to my first love: art.
Do you have any advice you wish someone had given to you about linguistics/careers/university?
I was away from uni for about 5 years between my bachelor's and master's degrees, and it took another 5 years to go back to art school. I really think that taking time away from school to actually work in the field is so crucial, and it helps you understand exactly what you want to do (or don't want to do!). Plus, the lack of structure outside of school is a real sink-or-swim moment.
