Can I request La Belle Fluer Sauvage for Klitz & AFAB reader,, Where the reader’s been hearing people on campus saying horrible things about her looks so after she breaks down in front of Klitz one night, he decides to show her how much he loves her body 🥺
Author’s Note | ahahahaaaaa, this was one hell of a piece to write. I tried to keep the description of the readers body very vague so that anyone could apply themselves here. but like lmao, this movie takes place in the early 2000s where fuckin heroin chic was a thing and you could literally be completely average sized and still called fat?? so like, it all works out in the end lol.
Warnings | smut (MDNI), oral (female receiving), some light overstimulation, Klitzy gets a liiiittle pussy drunk oop, the description of reader's body is kept vague but folks at the beginning are disparaging and call her a cow ;-; (so if this is triggering to you, maybe consider skipping this one; take care of yourselves, my loves), that's all I can think of!
Tumblr media
The second you feel his hand graze your lower back and his lips meeting yours, you feel guilty. It's a touch that you should be familiar with by now. The sensations are the same; a chill runs up your spine and a hum begins to swell in your throat. But the emotion that wells up in your eyes makes you twitch with frustration.
Clenching your knuckles, you wait to just melt into it; for everything to come together perfectly and suddenly make sense. Because you don't like associating Klitz with these worries. He's not your problem, not really. But the longer he lingers the more you remember the sound of those girls snickering.
You remember passing by them in the lunchroom, remember the way they tried their best to look sneaky as they stared in your direction. The part you remember most are the words. They've played on a loop and bounced around the inside of your skull like a screensaver all day ever since you heard them.
"God, what a heifer. Does she really need that much food on her tray?"
"She might not need it, but you know cows, they love to graze."
Then came the stifled cackles as you walked away as quickly as you possibly could away from their table. Body moving on autopilot, you went directly towards the lunch table the tripod had unofficially claimed as their own. Only this time, you didn't meet the greetings of any of the boys as you sat down. You couldn't even bring yourself to eat any of the lunch you'd taken.
Part of you wishes that Klitz had just ignored your silence. But he's never been that kind of boyfriend. Even if he has no clue what to do, he's always worried about you, especially when you don't respond to him placing a hand on your knee under the table.
Not wanting to embarrass you in front of his friends, he figures that he'll ask later. He figures that maybe math class is getting you down again or maybe you didn't get enough sleep. And he figured that the second he kissed you in his bedroom when you both got back to his house, you'd respond then.
But you make none of the happy little sounds he's used to. No contented sigh as his lips attach to your pulse point on your neck. You can tell he's trying so hard to get you hooked, but the only thing that is snagging are your own insecurities.
"Klitzy, stop," you blurt out suddenly and sit up properly, scooching away from him until you're practically on the edge of his bed. He stays rooted in place, watching as you pull your knees up, minimizing yourself as much as you possibly can, it seems.
Klitz doesn't dare to move a muscle when he questions you, "What did I do?"
Your gaze is glued to the plaid pattern of his rumpled comforter. Blinking fast, you answer, "You didn't do anything."
He has a hard time taking the answer at face value. "Okay..." he utters slowly, waiting for something more to leave your mouth.
That's when you swallow thickly and explain, "I just...I don't like my body right now. And if I don't like it, I'm not going to expect you to like it either."
"Oh–" that catches him off guard. He chews on his lip, bites into the flesh so hard that he flinches slightly. Klitz is all too familiar with those days. Because he knows what he looks like. He's well aware that he's not built like the guys at school are. And some days he's proud that he isn't one of those mindless meatheads. But especially in the days before he had you, he often had those same days of complete self loathing.
Those days were soothed by your soft voice calling him handsome, your fingers running up and down his arm, and your lips marking up his chest and throat with smears of glittery lip gloss and hickies alike. All of those things he'd once found to be detestable...he could grow into them.
Klitz tries again, "Do you think I'm ugly?"
Finally, you look at him, worry flooding your wide eyes, "No! Never! I promise you, I'm just–"
"Then why would I find you ugly?"
"Huh?" your brow raises.
"Listen, I might think that I'm ugly sometimes...but you don't. I feel the same way. Even if you think you're ugly...that doesn't stop me from thinking that you're the prettiest girl in the entire world."
Your eyes fall to your legs again as you smile slightly. "Agree to disagree then, I guess." you say with semi-amusement.
Klitz is careful with how he closes the space between you both. He slides forward a bit more, the mattress shifting as he gets closer. "That doesn't sound like a fair compromise," he teases.
"Then what's your idea of a fair compromise?"
"How about I try a little convincing first? You haven't even let me plead my case," his lips are inches away from yours again, hungry to prove their resolve on your skin.
You bide your time before his mouth hits their destination. "What's your case again?"
His breath warms your skin and makes goosebumps flourish all around your shoulders. "I think that you're the prettiest girl–" he kisses you chastely. "–in the entire world."
You chuckle playfully. "Okay, proceed," rolling your eyes, you want to be surprised how quickly he can sway you. How simply the sight of his eager smile as he gets between your legs makes your stomach flutter with elation. Klitz's nimble fingers make quick work of the button and zipper on your jeans and you giggle as you raise your hips to help him pull them down.
Momentarily, you curse yourself for not wearing anything special underneath them. Yet Klitz doesn't even seem to notice or care that these aren't some delicate lace panties. He still pulls them off with the same delicacy as if they were. And something about that makes you want to sob. But you push that down as he reaches for one of the pillows leaned against his headboard and places it right underneath you, getting you at a better angle for his mouth.
His dimples show as he kisses your thighs. Regardless of the texture and appearance of your flesh, they are ever present and betray all of his enthusiasm for his current position. But that smile is soon replaced as his lips part to let out shaky breath.
"Can I see you?" he asks tentatively, licking his lips nervously. "Please, baby?"
Watching his pupils dilate to the size of saucers as you spread your legs slowly, you can't help but laugh a little. It's absurd. It's absurd how often you forget about this feeling and absurd how quickly he fuels your fire with simple gasp. And it's absolutely fucking absurd that you feel that damn sob rising up your throat again. It's as if he was looking at you for the first time all over again. Maybe that's the benefit of his inexperience. With no one else to compare you to, he couldn't possibly be disappointed, right?
"Fuck," the single word comes out with the force of a freight train, like it was just waiting somewhere deep in his chest. It's something carnal and full of worship as licks a stripe up the center of your cunt, parting your folds and getting a taste of the musky arousal beginning to pool between your legs.
The second it hits his tongue he curses again, breathier this time. As much as he wants to take his time, as soon as he's gotten that little bit, he's keen to dive back in completely.
Without another thought into the action, Klitz plunges his tongue into your hole, desperately fucking you with it. His nose nuzzles against your mound and his hair flips wildly as he buries his face into your more and more like you're some sort of non-renewable resource. Like if he doesn't get his fill now, you'll run out of that sweet, tangy nectar that he so loves. And if the guttural groans and moans are anything to judge, you start to believe that he's truly been wanting this for a while.
That want only deepens as his arms hook around your thighs and raise you just slightly from the pillow, getting you closer. And that's when you finally make the contented sounds he likes to hear; the high pitched curses as you pull at your own nipples and the sharp gasps with every bump of his nose against your clit. You're so flushed, so swollen, and so ripe for him. And so close, so quickly.
He's everything you need and more, pleading his case as if he were mere moments away from a death sentence. As if you believing those ideas that you weren't worth any of this would actually kill him. That's how fervently he embraces you; all of you. Like if he didn't love your whole being with his entire being, he wouldn't even be himself.
The thought pushes you over the edge, sends you careening into a climax that practically makes your eyes roll back into your head. You finally let out that sob you'd been holding back. And the relief of it all fills your bones with warmth, even through the startling tinge of overstimulation as Klitz continues on, so lost in your cunt, that he'd barely even realized that you'd finished on his face.
You gasp, "Klitzy, too much!" and push back on his shoulders. Once he pulls away from the intense entanglement, you see his hazel green eyes are dazed behind his fogged up oval lenses and the bottom half of his thin face is covered in you.
He blinks hard a few times and wonders aloud with confusion, "Wait, you came?"
All you can do is throw your head back on the pillow and chuckle to yourself. God, part of you is glad that the rest of your peers are too stupid and superficial to see how attractive he is. Because you can't imagine any of the big, bulky, popular guys at your school being nearly as persistent and passionate as he is.
Klitz flops over beside you, bringing himself to you until he can look you in the eyes again. One of his hands reaches forward to brush some of your disheveled hair back behind your ear.
He whispers, "So...did I convince you?"
"I'm not sure," you joke. "I think I'm gonna need convincing on a regular basis now."
"I can always do that. I was captain of the debate team during sophomore year." Klitz replies matter of factly.
You can't even bring yourself to cringe at the little quip. Because you could never find him unappealing. So instead you smile coyly and giggle, letting him pepper your face with little kisses even though his lips are still wet from you.
"Don't worry," he says, "As long as you need me to, I'll keep trying to convince you."

La Belle Fleur Sauvage (1989)
"I'll live yet to see him Regret the dark hour When he won, then neglected, The frail wildwood flower" - "Wildwood Flower," American folk song written by Maud Irving, best known as performed by Mother Maybelle Carter. [Epigraph from La Belle Fleur Sauvage] The fifth Strange Trails story is one of George Ranger Jonhson's most plain-cut romance novels. As he mentioned after the publication of Lullaby, he’d been wanting to write more “of tender things.”The story this time around comes to the patrons of George's Place from Remy Fusil, the Cajun Cowboy - a character who appears fairly little in the whole rest of GRJ's oeuvre, unless you believe certain theories of second identities (you'd be hard-pressed to find a character who doesn't have those!)
In retrospect, despite his seat in the hallowed pantheon of Strange Trails narrators, alongside such heavy-hitters as Frankie Lou and Buck Vernon, Fusil was a means to an end - that end being the introduction of Lee Green, who would play a major role in the whole rest of Johnson's works, develop from the sweet young flower of the Michigan woods she's portrayed as here, to, in the end of ends, that half-real eye-of-the-hurricane phantom haunting moonlit Mt. Monroe.
But we're getting two series ahead of ourselves. For now, in this book, GRJ deftly weaves together Remy and Lee's hesitant and, perhaps, a touch unreliably narrated romance, with the timeless legend of an unobtainable alpine flower - a legend that Remy swears is Cajun, but in other books we're told it might be Basque, or American folk. In other words, it's a story that comes from everywhere, and everyone. Maybe that's why this old tale's themes of obsessive pursuit ring through almost every page that GRJ ever set his pen to. Behind the kisses in the moonlight, there are always mountains unclimbable, withering flowers picked for ephemeral beauty once held, fools for love lying in the drifting snow, in the wind, lost in time and space, who'd give it all to pluck that fleur.
Oh yes, and we end with another cliffhanger. As Remy leans back in George's Place, having finished his tale of romance, he lights up a cigarette and a Bob Dylan tune comes on the jukebox. No one, he says, could ever challenge that his love was the purest. And then, to a galloping 4/4 beat, he hears footsteps approaching.
Keep following this blog for more insight into Johnson's work through the years.
May you live until you die!

Hee hee! hee hee ho! My grubby furry hands will contaminate everything you love!
(Designs are free to use with credit, if anyone’s interested!)
Exhaustive design notes/trivia/extras are under the cut!
[Image IDs: a series of animal designs for Vide Noir’s characters. Buck Vernon is a sand-colored whitetail deer (how creative) with dented antlers, a brown-and-white striped bandanna, and a guitar slung around his back. Lee Green is a peach-and-cream fox with a white lily above her ear. Frankie Lou is a clouded leopard with a wavy black ‘mane’ of sorts. Jasper and Hontanx are mutts; Jasper is slender and mostly grey with brown dorsal coloring while Hontanx is more boxer-like with short, white fur and grey patches. Johnnie is a german shepherd mix, with half of his face scarred by black-braining, and sports a red bandanna on his leg and a leather World Enders jacket. Moonbeam is a black lop-eared rabbit with lavender undertones, also wearing the World Enders jacket. Alex is a doberman with slicked-back hair, also (also) with a World Enders jacket and much smaller black scar on his cheek. Toby is a very scruffy rufous treepie (don’t ask), mostly tan with a black head and wings with white accents. Finally, Z’Oiseau is a melanistic Bengal tiger, where his stripes are large and take up the majority of his fur. The final image is a lineup of all characters, with heights considered. Each design is still sketchy, and construction lines can be seen. The artist’s signature overlaps each image. End IDs.]
Well, well, well. It appears I’m at the stage of obsession where I make furry designs for the characters. Because I’m always paranoid that I need to explain myself for everything I do, here’s the comprehensive guide to each design. If I’ve done a good enough job, you can tell who’s who pretty easily.
Buck: Hmm, now how did he end up as a deer, I wonder...?
Silliness aside, Buck’s antlers actually play a pretty big role in representing his psyche/self-esteem, as they break off in certain scenes until the end, where they become shattered stumps. Jasper breaks + steals one antler when Buck gets black-brained, which I’m sure can be used as a metaphor for something.
Tumblr media
He’s also got big ol’ floppy ears. When I make animal designs, I try to mimic the form of someone’s hair via the ears or cheek fur, though, as you’ll soon see with Frankie, that’s not a hard-and-fast rule. You’ll also notice that he wears a bandanna, even though he doesn’t in the film. This is because I felt his design lacked color. And bandannas are cool. And my brain is addled with Hadestown parallels.
“But Rook!” I hear you say, “If Buck’s a deer, how can he play guitar? And how is he supposed to hold a gun?” Well, the answer to the first question is that he plays with his teeth. Obviously. And the obvious conclusion to the second question is that he doesn’t need artillery when he has a crown of stabby stabby bone.
Lee: Lee is a fox - outwardly desireable and a character of multiple folktales. There’s not much to say about her design otherwise, except for the addition of a lily - referencing ‘Fool For Love’ with “I’m asking Lily to be my bride” as well as ‘La Belle Fleur Sauvage’. Oh yeah, and she’s way too big compared to the other characters in the height chart lmao pretend she’s the average fox size
Lee fascinates me, and I think I’m the only one who thinks that way lol. It’s revealed at the end that she had Way more agency over her situation than everyone realized. Did she know about Z’Oiseau’s kill count before getting with him? Does she know now? AFWP says that she overcame the Vide Noir addiction, how did that go? Did severing herself from the drug sever connections to Z’Oiseau’s empire? What does she actually think of him? What are her songs like? Is she okay? Does she regret anything? Is she the same Lee who’s known as Lee Avery in the World Ender MV? AAAAAAAAAAAA
Frankie Lou: Picking the animal was easy, designing her was not. Clouded leopards are native to Cambodia, and I wanted Frankie and Z’Oiseau’s designs to complement each other in some way (I’d made Z’Oiseau’s design before I made Frankie’s). So there’s a spotty kitty and a stripey kitty. Clouded leopards are also insanely elusive, which adds to Frankie’s mysterious ghost facade in the film.
I normally don’t like adding ‘human’ hair to animals, but when I initially made Frankie without her hair, it really felt like something was missing. I like the way it looks now, and her plumed tail ties it together. The spots are not end-all-be-all, and can be simplified for animation.
Jasper and Hontanx: What better to chase after our Arthurian White Stag (Buck) and Teumessian Fox (Lee) than a pair of hunting dogs? Jasper and Hontanx needed to complement each other in the classic “Big Guy, Little Guy” trope, with the ‘little guy’ (Jasper) being tall, slender, and shrewd, while the “big guy” (Hontanx) is muscular and rarely speaks. Their names even follow the Kiki-Bouba effect.
I thought about making Hontanx fluffier, but the boxer look fits well, too. There’s some patches of longer fur around his neck and shoulders.
Johnnie: Everyone’s favorite little hurricane! Johnnie gives me exciteable puppydog vibes, so I made him a German Shepherd mix (mix, being “something fluffy”). His cheek fur is missing on his black-brained side, and his eye is a little messed up, but here’s what he looks like when he’s a-okay:
Tumblr media
Moonbeam: Rabbits are associated with the moon in multiple mythologies, so it’d make sense to make Moonbeam one. I haven’t drawn her in her fortune teller gear, but I think she’s happier to don the World Enders jacket instead. She’s also got some purple undertones for flavor, and they make her stand out as the only design with a cool color pallete. She’s just got that transfemme swag, I suppose.
Alex: For a character who only appears for 2 seconds, Alex seems to have made a permanent impression on Vide Noir fans, including myself. Strong, tall, and effortlessly cool, I wanted him to look like a model World Ender. This mayyyy have resulted in him looking nothing like his younger brother, but maybe one takes more after their father, and the other, their mother. Idk. I have this whole backstory thing with Cobb where the Redmaynes have this godawful father that Cobb helps them... get rid of. Because Cobb is the better dad.
Alex is the last of this bunch to be a canine, which I’m sure you’re all glad to hear. I don’t know why there are so many dogs. They just have that rugged look to them that suits the World Ender/Bounty Hunter style. Well, these ones do, anyway. Not Lee.
Toby: Toby was by far the most aggravating to design, and it’s pretty apparent in the final result. I mean, have you heard of a rufous treepie?
I had no idea what I wanted Toby to be, but I wasn’t about to draw another canine. As Z’Oiseau’s nephew, he’d be associated with birds by default, so I started thinking about the kind of bird Toby could fit - it’d have to be territorial, annoying, and/or aggressive.
 Like... blue jays?
While blue is not a color I’d associate with Toby, for whatever reason, I was getting somewhere. Blue jays are a part of the family Corvidae. Corvidae has birds that are black. Blackbird = Z’Oiseau! See? There’s a connection!
I scrolled down through Wikipedia’s corvid list until I came across the Rufous Treepie, a bird not only described as ‘opportunistic’, but ironically has a symbiotic relationship with local deer populations... It’s also large enough to get stabbed by an antler from a certain less-willing-to-cooperate deer.
So that’s what I went with. Toby’s meant to look more like a fledgling, given the scruffiness. I took some creative liberties with facial markings, but like. Who cares.
“But Rook,” you say, “If Toby’s a bird, and Z’Oiseau isn’t, how are they related?” Well, the obvious conclusion to come to here is that you should stop asking questions.
Z’Oiseau: It’s Zazo time! With a name like 'bird’, you’d expect him to be a bird. But I figured that making him a big cat would play very well into the irony of his name and would present him as a real threat. After all, you didn’t find Tobey very scary, did you? And who names a bird “bird”?
Because Z’Oiseau’s original name, Zozo, is Euskara, a language spoken in the Pyrenees, that was my first place to look for animals. Nothing jumped out to me, though, so I moved on to looking up big cat species and hoping for the best. Then an idea came to me - what about a tiger, but with reversed stripes? It’d fit the reasoning behind the “blackbird” name, and he’d be the most powerful big cat out there. To my surprise, melanistic tigers do exist, and they’re really cool. I picked the Bengal tiger of India for Z’Oiseau, as most of the ‘black tigers’ have been spotted there.
Z’Oiseau’s stripes can be simplified for animation or what-have-you. Or you can draw every individual stripe as presented in the photo, I’m not gonna stop you.
Well, that’s that! Might make Tubbs Tarbell and Cobb Avery later. For now, as a reward for making it this far, here’s some silly scribbles + shitposting:

I'm confused about the play adaptation of "La belle sauvage" isn't Marisa supposed to be in her twenties

a thought that's occurred to me, my portrayal of marisa has very much changed and evolved from when I've first started writing her. with the secret commonwealth, the collectors, the la belle sauvage play and especially the bbc adaptation of his dark materials coming out, all of these coming out after I've started playing marisa first in 2008. (not here, I've written marisa on several different platforms before tumblr, I've only been writing her here since 2016) but yeah it's strange sometimes to think about how differently I write her now.
but at the same time, with all of this now canon media that's been released about her, as well as my own headcanons changing and adapting to this new canon information, of course my adaptation is going to change and evolve. now I can't definitively say that it's for the better or the worse but it has definitely changed, and I still try to be as respectful to her canon as possible while also taking her in directions that I feel make sense for her character.
ted talk about marisa and my characterization of her below:
while yes she is a definite blend of all canon media of her, I have to admit that she's made up of a lot of the bbc adaptation. I know that in some circles that portrayal of marisa is controversial because it makes her "softer" and "more humanized" and I kinda agree but I also don't necessarily see that as a bad thing. but then again I've always preferred villains that are more multifaceted than just, they're straight up evil. and even in the original trilogy, my personal belief is that it was never the case with marisa then either.
in the golden compass/northern lights, we see marisa almost exclusively through lyra's eyes and we only see her for a few chapters. imo she is built up as someone purely evil for the sake of the narrative. we start to see cracks in this as we start to see more of her perspective in the subtle knife, but we also learn more about her motives, even if only in snippets. though we don't get the full character depth we know her most for until the amber spyglass, which is when we really start seeing things from marisa's perspective, seeing previous events from her perspective, and seeing her actually grow and change as a person. from everything we learned about her character in the amber spyglass, and including that line from mary "words like good and evil describe actions, not people" that's not the exact quote but that's what she says in less words, I think it was pullman's intention to express that marisa, as well as many other characters in his books, aren't entirely evil and aren't entirely good, and even not evil or good. that they're just people. but he seems to show us in great detail that this is especially the case of marisa.
she does so many both evil and good actions throughout the trilogy, as well as so many both evil and good intentions and motivations throughout the trilogy. I don't think making marisa out as dehumanized and purely evil was ever pullman's intention. for me I see further proof of this when we got la belle sauvage, when we learn of marisa being sa'd in her youth, of the usually fearless marisa being so physically terrified at being told that gerard bonneville was looking for her, when we got the secret commonwealth where we see that marisa had an absolutely fucking horrible mother, and no we don't know all the details of these things, but the pieces are there. another element that I feel is proof of this is that pullman has been both incredibly supportive of the bbc adaptation, as well as heavily involved in its creation. he's credited as an executive producer, a lot of things went through him for approval. also, pullman has said time and time again that his favorite character of this series is marisa coulter. I truly don't think he would approve of the way she's portrayed in the series if he didn't actually see it as her, if he agreed with some of the sentiments saying that the adaptation "ruins her character by humanizing her".
honestly I feel like the bbc adaptation gave marisa the depth that pullman wanted to give, but at the time was focused more on the main narratives in the first two books, but then we got to the amber spyglass, where so much of the novel is focused on giving marisa that same level of depth and, yes, humanization. honestly the bbc adaptation to me feels like an extension of that depth shown in the amber spyglass, and it's one that clearly pullman is approving of.
the other thing I've seen is the complaint that because she's so humanized in the bbc adaptation, it belittles and erases what evil actions she has done. I disagree. I personally have seen with most people who do these evil actions, realistically, that person usually does think that they're doing the right thing, that they are acting with what they see are good intentions, that they have reasoning for why they're doing what they're doing, and of course that doesn't make any of their actions okay.
what does, however, make their actions at least possible to forgive, is character growth. learning from mistakes, changing ways, doing better, which is what we see marisa doing in the amber spyglass. though another argument I see is that, it says in the amber spyglass that marisa is remorseless but in the bbc adaptation, we see marisa showing remorse, and to that I argue; those times in the book, that is said/thought about her, by other people. they believe her to be remorseless. from what I can think of, we never truly get a statement either spoken or thought by marisa herself that she truly doesn't feel remorse for her actions. we get asriel's inner thoughts, will's inner thoughts and I think at some point lyra's inner thoughts about how she doesn't feel any sort of guilt or remorse, but never marisa's own.
I would argue that we also see her showing remorse in the amber spyglass. her thinking about her crimes, her saying how awful her crimes were, which is not something she did in the first book. she never would've called them crimes, she called them her saving humanity, her trying to do good. but in the amber spyglass, she specifically calls those same actions crimes. I just don't think a completely remorseless person would express the way she did about how truly horrible her actions were. she also audibly lamented her mistakes with lyra, even as far back as saying that she and asriel should've raised lyra themselves.
in the scene that is usually the biggest argument of marisa being this truly evil, remorseless person, is the scene where metatron is examining marisa, where he tells her about every horrible thing she's ever done, how horrible of a person she is, etc. we also see both in marisa's inner thoughts and in her aloud dialogue to asriel that marisa was actively trying to convince metatron that there wasn't a shred of good in her, for the purpose of her being able to trick him into thinking she was evil enough to be able to betray her child and her lover. that's the key here. she was internally doing her absolute best to shove down any shred of goodness she had, any amount of remorse, her love for lyra, her love for asriel. and surprisingly what a lot of people leave out when talking about that scene, is moments later, metatron literally sensing regret from marisa. he tells her that it's regret that she would never get to see lyra grow up, and ofc she lies her way out of it and claims its regret about not meeting him earlier in her life, which he accepts. which, personally, I feel like if he knew the reason behind her regret as a fact, he wouldn't have. so my guess? he was deciphering why she felt regret and that's what made the most sense, but he had enough doubt in this to believe marisa's lie about the actual reason.
so honestly I feel that could mean that this regret could extend to a lot of things, definitely with lyra, but I could argue that her regret was encompassing the fact that she did do all of those things that metatron said, she was that way before, and does feel regret and guilt for it. and honestly I think she came to feel that way through loving lyra, through seeing and learning from her, from lyra pointing out the flaws in her previous logic, from lyra telling her about how awful her actions were, lyra being this beautiful human being that marisa herself defends as someone brave, generous and loving. and I think that really had an effect on marisa, making her want to be better, to be more like lyra, which I think we see is definitely true in the bbc adaptation, or if nothing else, at least making her feel remorse and guilt for all of the things she's done. I think we see that in the amber spyglass, I really do.
I mean it was the amber spyglass that completely changed my opinion on marisa as a character. believe it or not, when I first read the golden compass, and then first read the subtle knife, I didn't trust marisa, I didn't like her, I thought she was cool and mysterious but I absolutely saw her as this wicked, evil bitch. and then I read the amber spyglass, and there was a change of perspective, I went through ups and downs of wondering if I could trust her, wondering if she was being sincere, and it actually turned out that she was. that she was genuinely so loving of lyra, genuinely going through character development, and also so many actions and statements here put previous actions and statements into a different perspective for me. I went from rooting against marisa to rooting for her, to emphasizing with her, to seeing her as, yes, humanized. the amber spyglass did that first, not the bbc adaptation. the bbc adaptation took that humanization and expanded upon it, showing her perspective and scenes that we didn't see in the golden compass and the subtle knife but ones that absolutely make sense for her character.
another argument I saw was that marisa being portrayed as a woman being oppressed by a sexist society is an invention by the bbc adaptation to further humanize marisa, to which I'm just like ????? go read the books again honestly. the first book especially talks about how big of a deal it was that marisa was the first ever woman accepted as a member of the royal arctic institute, and an even bigger deal that she was the first woman accepted as a member of the magisterium. in the original trilogy, we only ever see women in england as nurses, nuns, or any other non male dominant field besides scholars (who are only allowed to be so at st. sophia's college for women) and the one female reporter. and it's such a big deal that marisa is accepted into the magisterium as an actual member vs being in it as a nun or a nurse is because the magisterium time and time again is shown to view women as generally lesser. the golden compass also talks about how marisa's affair went down, how it was even a question of whether or not asriel had committed murder or self defense when marisa's husband aimed to kill asriel and their child, the court's argument of why asriel should be charged for murder instead of self defense was legitimately "edward had the right to defend the violation of his wife" despite marisa's relationship with asriel being consensual, because they legit don't see wives as autonomous people, they saw marisa as property of edward, that he apparently had every right to defend by possibly murdering her lover and their child. and that's just the first book. we see so many more examples of patriarchy and marisa (as well as other female characters in the series) being subjected to it throughout the entire trilogy. so to the person who said the bbc adaptation just made that shit up. yeah no, I'm saying with my full chest that you're wrong.
so idk yeah. my adaptation of marisa does feel regret, she does have the self hatred that we see her experiencing in the bbc adaptation, this self hatred being based on a scene we actually got in the movie that pullman has stated that he loves and approves of this scene of marisa striking her daemon as a means of self punishment and says makes absolute sense for her character, combined with it being based on another scene we get from the golden compass novel, (and honestly, we see her experiencing this same self hatred in the amber spyglass as well), she does have genuine love for lyra which we see time and time again in the original trilogy, from in the golden compass marisa putting her own ass on the line by taking lyra in, and then later saving lyra from the intercision machine, to the subtle knife where she goes through such lengths to find and save lyra, to the amber spyglass, where she gives up literally everything she's ever worked for in order to save lyra, even including sacrificing her life to save her, and yes, she does try being a better person starting from, what I feel is mid to late the golden compass after failing so hard with lyra and regretting it. I know some people disagree with this kind of portrayal of marisa, not because anyone personally told me this, although I'm kinda surprised I haven't gotten anons about it or anything, I've just seen people talking about how they think the bbc adaptation is insulting to her original canon, and I just really disagree with that. I think everything I've described here does have a canon basis in pullman's books, both the original trilogy and the side books featuring marisa, and my opinion is further cemented to me by philip pullman himself approving of the bbc adaptation.

Last song: Soldier Side by System Of A Down (been playing it on loop for the past week lol)
Currently watching: I'm in that era agian where hearing people speak is like nails on a chalkboard to me, but whenever I feel like it I catch up with What We Do In The Shadows episodes (🤝). I'm really not a watching guy, unless you count the video essays I put in the background while I work sometimes. Or the occasional Cold Ones vid I put on while I eat (against my better judgement).
Currently reading: Working my way through A Sinful Mercy by Kichi on ao3 does that count? It's an absolutely massive fic and it's written So Well, but when it comes to things that don't read like a 12yo wrote them, I am legitimately illiterate so I'm probably still gonna be reading it in a years time lol I don't really read books for that exact reason. The only thing that can help me overcome my brain's shortcomings in that regard is having a massive hyperfixation on a ship, then I can devour novels in a single day. I've been trying to finish La Belle Sauvage by Philip Pullman for like... 3 years now? rip
Current obsession: Red Dead 😂 I think that's pretty clear ahah Though I've been channelling that brainrot into OC stuff for the most part lately, which I've been really annoying about so you probably know that... I am a real one-thing-at-a-time person so that's mostly it 😅
Tagging: @yeehawpurgatory @cherriiramen @americanoleander @sstrawbaby @blanche-elizabeth-devereaux (hope you guys don't mind the tag 🥺😭)

what's your favorite book :) open for an explanation of why/favorite moments if you want!
Oh gosh, tough question.
At the moment, I'm reading through The Wind in the Willows again because it's been years and I love the story, but one of my most beloved books is a multi-book of Pippi Longstocking stories. I remember reading it over and over and just absolutely loving the silly shenanigans Pippi got her friends into. One of my favourite bits is when the three are playing sardines in Pippi's house.
Twins at St. Clare's is also good and I have multi-book of that. You get to read as these initially stuck-up twins (though one more than the other) mellow and turn into some really decent and genuine people. Similar story about the Mallory Towers books.
Out of recent reads though, probably the Silo Series - Wool, Shift and Dust. It gets you emotionally invested just enough before it snatches it all away from you to give you a fresh character to get used to, then you're afraid that something is going to happen to them only to be lured into a false sense of security that nothing will because "surely, nothing else can happen with this protagonist/character, right?" Wrong :) A great read all round, 10/10 would do it again.
I also have high praise for the Inheritance Cycle books - Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, Inheritance. The Eragon film absolutely ruined the story in my opinion and I can't forgive it. Sure, yeah, the nice touch with Saphira at a funeral was nice, but no. I despise this film compared to the books. I know you said you're open for explanations but this is about why I don't like this film and doesn't pertain to the original question. If you ask nicely I might type out my Eragon film rant.
But the books are really good, go and read those. They transport you into this land so well that you'll wish it was real.
Then there's His Dark Materials (the books) - The Northern Lights (also known as The Golden Compass), The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass. Honestly, top marks for these, I felt so connected to the characters of Lyra and Pantalaimon that I was on the edge of my seat every time they were in dangerous situations. I actually have the first in the Book of Dust series too - La Belle Sauvage. I don't have The Secret Commonwealth because I didn't know there would be a second prequel sequel book. I'll be honest, I've been sidetracked on reading that book and have misplaced it somewhere in the house, but I know roughly where it is when I want to find it again.
So yeah, tough question, but these are my standing favourites from my childhood days to recent times. Thank you for asking! ^-^

hi i do think it’s insane to play la belle fleur sauvage “i’ll be the one to love that girl” and fool for love “i was born to lose ‘cause i’m a fool for love” back to back. the intricacies.
