@fitzwillaimdarcy replied to your post “Okay so Magnificent Century is now on US Netflix but that's not the...”
what is it about???
*Cracks fingers* let’s do this
Magnificent Century is about the reign of Sultan Suleiman I of the Ottoman Empire in the 1500s.  HOWEVER, the REAL star of the show is Hurrem Sultan, who intrigues to rise from the rank of slave to become his wife and the first woman to marry a sultan in almost 200 years (before this, sultans procreated only with concubines as a way to consolidate power generationally without having to split power by making alliances that marriage brings). This show is honestly mostly about HER rise to power.  Hurrem is important historically because she marks the beginning of the Sultanate of Women, a time where institutional changes to the Ottoman Empire led to a unprecedented amount of opportunities for female power within politics. She’s demanding, and obviously ambitious and the writers clearly hated her when they wrote her so they gave her almost every trait men hate about women (like those two) but that’s exactly why I love her. Really, anything not involving the women, you can be free to fast forward through.
Think about Magnificent Century: Kosem as ‘The Legend of Korra’ if LoK was written by people who hate women. But there’s some merit. It’s the spinoff that takes place with the main casts’ descendants half a century or so after MC. It focuses on the life of Mahpeyker Kosem  (i love that name) Sultan in the 1600s from adolescence to presumably the end of her life (this show is still ongoing). She has a similar background to Hurrem too. They both start out as slaves (like most women who rise to high position in the empire at this time), but whereas Hurrem is historically known (and thus hated) as a powerful consort, Kosem is known as the most powerful woman in early modern Turkish history as a serial queen (grand)mother and first female regent of the empire. She is also my wife and I love her.
I wouldn’t go to these show for a particularly historically accurate reading though. This show doesn’t go into the honestly fascinating nuance of the very intricate female power structure of Imperial Harem system. Like, the show starts where the position of ‘Haseki Sutlan’ (the sultan’s favourite consort) is an already established convention that multiple women can hold at a time. This is to mitigate how much of a institutional groundbreaker Hurrem was because that title was made up for her, the idea of a singular consort for an emperor was made up for her. I strongly recommend reading Leslie M. Pierce’s The Imperial Harem if you want a solid background info on the show to gripe about.
You don’t have to do any of that research of course. The costumes, pretty people, and lady characters are often enough. I’d check out the first couple episodes on Netflix for sure.
