05/03/23-Walk at Lakeside; photos taken today in this set are of: 1. Glorious crocuses which it was a pleasure to see in the welcome sun north of the steam railway station, I had hoped these crocuses which spring up every year at this spot and were the first I ever saw at Lakeside in 2021 would be out soon and I was overjoyed to see purple and white ones, extremely beautiful blooms. 2. One of the daffodils tantalizingly close to coming out in the front garden as I left for the walk. 3. Monks Brook. 4 and 5. Views. 6. Greylag Goose, these seen well alongside a Canada Goose pair on the grass west of Kornwestheim lake as I saw on Friday. 7. Great Crested Grebe, good to see this one of the courting pair on Kornwestheim Lake and one on each of the other lakes too a good bit of bonus time with them with this weekend walk. 8. Another view. 9. Red deadnettle a key cog in the wheel of a great flower walk at Lakeside and on the way with an array of species seen. 10. Buds on a tree, it was brilliant to see uplifting buds and blossom glorifying the landscape shining well in the sun at Lakeside and from home today.
Other highlights at Lakeside included breathtaking views of two circling Buzzards over the lakes and a Green Woodpecker darting across near the bowl. Chaffinch in a strong weekend for them, Great Tit including one singing well, Moorhens, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Starlings, Wren, Dunnock, daffodil at Lakeside too, some worn snowdrops, violets and the exciting call of the Ring-necked Parakeet heard on the walk were key parts of the walk too. A delightful walk embraced by spring.

12/11/23-Lakeside and home
Photos taken in this set: 1 and 10. Roe Deers which it was powerful to get some great glimpses of, I believe it was a pair and a youngster I'd not seen a young one before so this was glorious to observe. 2. Jelly tooth fungi, a nice shiny and smooth one to find. 3. Two female Goosanders which I was astounded to see. The ultimate Lakeside duck for me I'd seen them here a handful of times, it's real once in a blue moon stuff to spot these charming birds which come south in the winter at my local patch Lakeside. I was so thrilled to see and take them in and take photos, one of my Lakeside moments of the year. Weirdly I felt drawn by something to fit a bonus walk at Lakeside to compliment my weekday lunch time walks into my Sunday and I saw so much here this morning, the euphoric Roe Deer and Goosander moments especially really made me glad I did the walk. It was funny seeing the two on Kornwestheim lake, even funnier that before looking at them in binoculars I thought they were the Lakeside stalwart Great Crested Grebes, as we first ever saw Great Crested Grebes on this lake when I was ten and we'd just got into birdwatching a fairytale moment of my childhood and building my treasured interest with this one of my favourite birds and from books at that stage having not seen any of the three before that moment I was more familiar with Goosander and the (though I now know they're more a sea duck) related Red-breasted Merganser so thought the grebes may be one of them until we worked out they were grebes so I've always associated the unrelated species with each other a little. 4, 6, 7 and 8. Beautiful views on the walk including rich autumnal colour including in the sun, rose hips and some catkins in the eighth picture. 5. Goldfinches in nice light at home. 9. Greylag Geese flying over, a noisy and immersive sight towards the end of the walk with some seen as I got home too. I've photographed a fair few goose species this weekend.
In an extraordinary walk of seeing things two Cormorants circling around which was fantastic to see with one on the lake, mesmerising Siskins my first here this season a great bird here in winter, Goldfinches here too, Redwing, Blackbird, Long-tailed and Blue Tits seen well near the Siskins such captivating birds to see the Long-tailed especially I've had a great year for them, the Great Crested Grebes, Coot and Moorhen were other bird highlights. It was good to see Carrion Crow and Jackdaw flying in the air together which I've rarely or ever seen before with Jackdaw in the garden which I don't often see and Starling and Collared Doves highlights at home today. Daisy, white clover, white deadnettle, a tiny part of a yarrow flower hanging on, ragwort, hawthorn berries and lichen were also nice to see on the walk with rose hips, lavender and firethorn enjoyed at home.

2nd November 2023: Lakeside and home
Photos taken in this set are of: 1-4. Blustery and wet scenes on my lunch time walk at Lakeside with the autumnal colour looking radiant which was nice to see. 5 and 7. A beautiful Pied Wagtail which I enjoyed seeing. 6. Some Mallards swimming on an extensive flood in the southern fenced off area with beach lake behind, showing the impact of the weather. 8 and 9. A bit of a sunset tonight. 10. A Long-bodied Cellar spider this evening.
With the Pied Wagtail I was delighted to see a Grey Wagtail flitting around the meadow between the woods and Kornwestheim lake which had become a paddy field. It was fascinating to see the two common wagtail species side by side something I'd rarely seen before and it was probably the best view at Lakeside I'd got of this hint of lemon coloured pacey delight. Indeed it's the first I've ever seen actually in the country park, seeing them on the adjacent Monks Brook including at the ford before. The most exhilarating moments of the walk came with some smashing and intimate views of an eyecatching Kingfisher, some thrilling moments. Seeing and hearing Wren and Mistle Thrush nicely, Robin, Collared Dove flying over beach lake, Woodpigeon, Starlings, Great Crested Grebes, Coot and Moorhen were other nice birds to see in the rain. Magpie and Collared Dove from home and entertainingly a Black-headed Gull in a puddle in the basketball area out the front were other cheerful birds moments today. The mini forest of holly berries, hogweed, wild carrot and a bit of small or field scabious just about in flower were key plants today.

27th January 2023: Lakeside and home
I enjoyed seeing and hearing beautiful Blue Tit and Great Tit at Lakeside on my lunch time walk with Long-tailed Tit seen too including one on the ground which I’d not often seen before. I am on a good run for seeing tit species, I took the first picture in this photoset of an intricately marked and colourful Blue Tit momentarily poised on a branch looking down. For these three tit species generally but particularly Blue Tit I think for seeing and photographing them this has been my best winter for them enjoying them so much at home, Lakeside and other sites. I saw gorgeous Green Woodpeckers well in the meadowy areas of Lakeside again what a run I am on for them, and got lovely views of Coot as the second picture in this photoset shows, Moorhens scuttling around and Mallard. I got a wonderful view of a sweetly singing Robin kissed by a gorgeous shaft of winter sunlight, I was so thrilled to hear it bird song can be such a precious sound of this time of year I took the sixth picture in this photoset of it. As with other days this week the bushes in the east of the site were brimming with House Sparrows, I got some lovely views of these iconic urban birds once more and managed the eighth picture in this photoset of one. Magpie as shown in the ninth picture in this photoset I took today including two at once and picking on the tiles of a roof out the back I saw these very well at Lakeside today too, Jackdaw and lovely male Blackbird were key at home sightings today with a spider seen well in the landing again tonight.
I enjoyed the viburnum looking nice in the back garden and an exquisite hopeful sun kissed scene of some of the daffodil shoots and ivy in the front garden at the end and start of my lunch break respectively. Red deadnettle, cleavers and a beautiful show of catkins again south of Kornwestheim lake again as the fourth picture in this photoset shows were plant highlights of my lunch time walk.
Shapes in the bare winter landscape grabbed my attention on my walk at Lakeside, with great bits of sun on the walk and interesting cloud formations which were nice to see. I took the third, fifth and seventh pictures in this photoset of views at Lakeside. There were some gripping dramatic cloud scenes and bits of pink in the sky in a memorable sunset tonight I took the tenth picture in this photoset of this. I hope you all have a nice weekend.
Wildlife Sightings Summary: Green Woodpecker, Magpie, Carrion Crow, Jackdaw, House Sparrow, Goldfinch seen well from home on the balcony feeders too, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Long-tailed Tit, House Sparrow, Robin, Blackbird, Woodpigeon well at Lakeside and home, Feral Pigeon, Mallard, Coot, Moorhen, Herring Gull seen nicely on beach lake, Black-headed Gull and the spider I believe the Noble False Widow. I seem to recall hearing Starling.

12/09/23-Lakeside and home
Pictures taken in this set are of: 1. A bold and beautiful Great Spotted Woodpecker that I was thrilled to see in the trees in the middle of Kornwestheim Lake at Lakeside, a bird I adore and always love seeing. It was a euphoric moment, my first at Lakeside since early in the year. 2. A beautiful spider in its web in the front garden. 3. Another nice one to see early on in my lunch break out the front, a crane fly. 4. Plantain with a hoverfly on at Lakeside. 5. Hawksbeard/ox tongue. 6 and 10. A beautiful Blue Tit which was within a sweet flock of Long-tailed Tits in trees over Concorde lake. 7. A beautiful Blue Tit in the garden this afternoon, great to get a photo in a strong run of seeing and hearing them at home they're regular lately. 8. View out the back with a bit of brightness as it became a sunshine and showers type evening. 9. Woodpigeon that was near the woodpecker at Lakeside.
I got smashing views of Long-tailed Tits on my brilliant far reaching Lakeside lunch time walk as a whole, with Speckled Wood taking over for butterflies with a fair few seen which was good and a great Migrant Hawker view again too. Close views of Moorhen and Grey Squirrel, Feral Pigeon dashing through the air over the northern fenced off area almost raptor like, two Mallards joining a Black-headed Gull on a stick that so often seems to be there on Kornwestheim Lake, Robin and Chiffchaff heard at Lakeside, Jackdaw and Magpie out the back today and picking at the mowed grass on the green out the front at the end of my lunch and Collared Doves from home were other highlights. Bee, pond skater, white deadnettle, water mint, creeping thistle, ragwort, dandelion with a fly on, bindweed, broad-leaved clover, marjoram and snails on the balcony, speeplebush at home with a spider's web between two of the tall flowers were also good to see today.

12/12/22-Lakeside and home Blog 2 of 2: The landscape
It was fascinating to see Lakeside gripped by ice at lunch time, I rarely recall it being this icy or as much of beach lake and Kornwestheim lake frozen as this. These were epic winter sights to take in and I enjoyed taking photos of this, with little bits of frost visible too. The patterns of blocks of ice scattered across the surface and the uniform texture and colour of the frozen lakes was beautiful to see. These sights have defined the past few days for me. Little bits of autumnal colour added well on quite a bleak day, and there is one tree near to Lakeside one that went yellow in the “false autumn” back in the summer that amazingly has no coloured leaves but some green ones still which looked quite moody in the light and there is some green on a tree out the back as well. I wonder whether these are leaves hanging on that developed once the relief of rain came after the heatwave’s stress. It has been a year of extreme weather, naturally I’m looking back on the summer a lot lately and it’s amazing to think how seemingly quickly it all changed from the water level at Lakeside so low, to the lakes spilling out and now parts of that full water frozen. I enjoyed catkins again today as the first picture in this photoset shows, and I took the rest of the photos in this set today of views including the frozen lakes, frost and colour in the trees as well as bare trees.

07/11/2022-Lakeside and home
The Blue Tits are very regular in the garden these days, I don’t recall a period of them coming in so consistently before I enjoyed seeing some in this morning, I took the first picture in this photoset of one. They were around the feeders the same time as Goldfinches, a great rush of bright colour between the two of them which it was so good to have in the garden. Once again after last week on a Monday I saw Meadow Pipits whilst walking down the central path between the fenced off areas, this time getting an exhilarating view of three which came down onto the fence then flew up into a tree. I took the seventh picture in this photoset of two, it is so exciting seeing a bird I see loads elsewhere that I don’t often see at Lakeside. I was thrilled to see two Pied Wagtails very closely on the paths out the front, smashing intimate views of a bird that symbolizes winter for me when they visit the garden so much. I thought I heard some from home today and it was great to see these two flitting around the puddles as I have seen before. Also in the way of little birds today seeing a Goldcrest in trees by Kornwestheim lake at Lakeside was a treat, a cute and somewhat exuberant bird Europe’s smallest which I always like seeing.
In the way of waterbirds; as well as Coots bolstered in numbers a little to the one I’ve been seeing here through the summer and into autumn of late having spread to being on beach lake as well as just Concorde lake Great Crested Grebe had done the same. I saw one on each of these lakes, the one on Concorde that I’ve been seeing on and off for a while I’ve come round to thinking is a young one I believe possibly one of the youngsters born here this year. And the one on beach lake was certainly juvenile which was great to see. I took the ninth picture in this photoset of the one on Concorde lake which I liked seeing. It’s starting to go into those months where many birds are about at Lakeside which does excite me. A Noble False Widow spider was interesting to see in the landing once more before my lunch break.
At Lakeside it was nice to see some pretty flowering by beach lake, dogwood flowers I believe. A great throw back to spring days almost seeing flowering. On my lunch time walk dandelion, red deadnettle and groundsel going strong out the front still and cornflower, orange poppies and yarrow in the flower bed area on the way to Lakeside were nice flowers to see. I enjoyed seeing some pretty flowers I believe sumac great red ones which I took the third picture in this photoset of which have come out nicely, leaves with raindrops on and cress were lovely to see on the balcony on the way out for my walk with bright red rose hips adorned by raindrops and nice firethorn seen well in the front garden as well as the little bit of lavender in flower and smashing snapdragons beside the house which I took the fourth picture in this photoset of were great sights today too.
It was interesting seeing Lakeside covered in puddles almost after the rain of late, and the lakes looking noticeably really full. What a difference a couple of months make. It was noticeable how low the water level was in the summer the extremes of the year really clear to see here. I enjoyed seeing autumnal colour today at Lakeside and home including bits of colour in the forsythia hedge providing brightness on a mostly moody day there was a touch of sun as the afternoon went on. I took the fifth, sixth, eighth and tenth pictures in this photoset of views here today. I also enjoyed seeing raindrops on the window, a subject I like taking macro photos of now and again as I did a couple of times including the second picture in this photoset. It was great to see prominence of them as the rain splashed the windows and how beautiful they looked, they made nice patterns fittingly as that is a theme in a photography Facebook group I am starting this week.
Wildlife Sightings Summary: One of my favourite birds the Great Crested Grebe, Mallard, Moorhen, Coot, Black-headed Gull including seen well out the front also on the green, Herring Gull, Woodpigeon, Feral Pigeon, very wild and rustic scenes of Carrion Crows, Jackdaw seen well out the front near the Pied Wagtal and before, Magpie, Blue Tit, Goldcrest, Starling, Meadow Pipit, Pied Wagtail, Goldfinch, Robin, possible Wren at Lakeside and Noble False widow. I believe I heard Long-tailed Tit at Lakeside too.

A Six-spot Burnet atop a pyramidal orchid, two stars of recent weeks that I enjoyed seeing on a great lunch time walk today. 3, 4, 8 and 9. Views at Lakeside with the sun just poking through a few times. 5. A Black-and-yellow Longhorn beetle on some wild carrot along the northern path, a riveting insect which I was overjoyed to see late on the walk and make out it's fine colours and features. Brilliant lunch time moments. 6. Dark mullein with red valerian behind. 7. View out the back in a bright patch this morning with a distant horse chestnut tree looking nice. 10. 26th June 2023-Lakeside and home
Photos taken in this set: 1. Woodpigeon in the garden. 2. Small Skipper at Lakeside at lunch time on some lovely bird’s-foot trefoil, great to see loads of these mini beauties flitting around today. 3. Some of my first wild parsnip of the year which was interesting to see. 4. Self-heal. 5. Greylag Goose goslings at Lakeside. 6. Mallards. It was interesting to see a male in eclipse gradually loosing its green head. 7. Great Crested Grebe chicks on Kornwestheim lake, it was wonderful to watch them again as they were settled under vegetation and both parents fished. They took their turn to swim forth and receive the food. Fascinating to watch. 8. View at Lakeside this evening. 9. Black-tailed Skimmer on my evening walk at Lakeside, a star of recent days which it was great to see again. 10. Red Admiral which I got splendid views of Lakeside this evening.
This evening also I had one of my butterfly moments of the year when as hoped at some point in the next few weeks around the dark green oaks kissed by the creamy evening sun I saw some Purple Hairstreaks dancing along the tree top and battling one another. This was an amazing moment, after discovering this butterfly which is a mega and luxurious species for an urban area were here three years ago I never imagined they were at my local country park up until that point, this is the first time I’ve first seen this species in a year here. I am very pleased with this, it’s a fairly early sighting but I had seen others had seen them so I felt I wanted to start the project to try to see one today and I was amazed to get such precious glimpses of them. It’s becoming a summer evening tradition for me to stand looking at the oaks beside the steam railway track and I am so happy these days are here again. Another massive butterfly moment, my 37th species of the year. Along the same path at lunch time I achieved another aim seeing my first Common Darter dragonfly of 2023 a female, and Marbled White, Holly Blue, Ringlet, Meadow Brown, pond skater, damselflies, Common Red Soldier beetle my first at Lakeside this year and ladybird were other great insects to see. I was also thrilled to see Gatekeepers early again, seeing them at Lakeside my first here this year just as notable as the very early sighting I had of two at Durlston on Saturday. Today’s my joint second earliest ever sighting of one in a year alongside my first of 2020 at Portland on this date three years ago. Lesser Black-backed Gull, young Great Tit I believe, Feral Pigeon, Swift, House Martin and Wren heard were other Lakeside bird highlights with Goldfinch, House Sparrow, young Starling and Magpie good to see at home. Pyramidal orchid, purple loosestrife, great willowherb, a yellow iris hanging on, pineappleweed, hogweed and St. John’s-wort were other flower highlights today.

05/06/2023-Lakeside and home
Photos taken in this set are of: 1. Spiders in the hallway. 2. Cuckoo spit on some lavender that’s coming into flower in the front garden. 3. Beautiful blue cornflowers in the flower bed area on the way to Lakeside at lunch time. 4, 5, 8 and 10. Beautiful emerald views on another day of lush vegetation and endless bright blue sky. 6. A well grown Greylag Goose gosling at Lakeside. 7. A mesmerising and gigantic Emperor dragonfly, I was so thrilled to take a turn into a meadow area by the lakes and see it whizzing through the air. It’s size apparent as it heavily touched down and I enjoyed some glorious moments spellbound by it as it shone in the sunlight. Captivating moments with a wondrous species that it has been a joy to see these past few days. 9. Some fresh adorable Mallard ducklings which it was lovely to see, seeing some older ones well too.
Dazzling dragonflies dominated my day as on the Lakeside walk I was over the moon to spot a target, two Black-tailed Skimmers beside beach and Kornwestheim lakes. It was a pleasure to enjoy this rather more dainty and delicate dragonfly of striking colours. I love seeing them here at this time of year so I was buzzing to see them. Beautiful Demoiselle, Common Blue Damselfly and exotic Blue-tailed Damselfly were nice to see too. Meadow Brown and Speckled Wood butterflies were good to see as was the terrapin and two sparkling Swollen-thighed beetles on a cornflower and oxeye daisy each at the flower bed were a joy to see on the way. Bird wise at a distance I was happy to get a glimpse of one of the Great Crested Grebe’s eggs underneath the bird on the Kornwestheim lake nest. Moorhen, Feral Pigeon seen well, a fair few Woodpigeons, Jackdaw, Carrion Crow seen well on a sign by beach lake, Magpie, Blackbird and possibly a young Great Spotted Woodpecker stood out too. Plantain, loads of yellow rattle, oxeye daisies, mini pink crane’s-bills possibly cut-leaved crane’s-bill shining like gems, bigger purpler meadow crane’s-bills, forget-me-not, green alkanet, speedwell, shiny thistle, loads of buttercups, red valerian and chamomile and roses including dog roses standing out at Lakeside and home were key flowers seen today. Young Starling including beside House Sparrow and Goldfinch were key birds seen at home today. A smashing vibrant wild day.

30th May 2023: Lakeside and home
Pictures in this set are of: 1. A growing Greylag Goose gosling at Lakeside, a joy to see them again. 2. Young Starling on the top of the bird table in the sun this afternoon. 3. A Wren that called with gusto at Lakeside atop a bare branch I believe the one I saw last week here too, this was beautiful to hear and see. 4 and 7-10. Excellent emerald views on another lovely lunch time walk in the bright sunshine. 5. A sea of oxeye daisies, these as well as buttercups and yellow iris a key flower seen today carpeted Lakeside well again. 6. Orchids at the shore of beach lake common spotted orchid I believe, so delicious and alluring to observe.
I was excited to see the male Great Crested Grebe of the nesting pair on Kornwestheim lake with a fish in its mouth and then plucking a white feather from its belly. The latter a sign eggs could have hatched under the female on the nest as they give the young chicks feathers to aid digestion. It will be interesting to see if there are any chicks visible soon. I loved seeing a Moorhen chick on Concorde lake too, a loudly chirping and adorable little bird near to the bit where the tree overhangs the lake where both a Moorhen and another Great Crested Grebe are interestingly on a nest. Black-headed Gull, Kestrel, Swift gliding through the air, great views of Blackbird, Collared Dove and Jackdaw along the northern path with the former and latter flying onto posts in the fence beside the steam railway track and Magpies seen very well were other highlights. Green-veined White, Common Blue Damselfly, dazzling bramble flower, little green alkanet, water dropwort and shiny pink dog roses were nice to see on the walk too. As well as the Starlings; Woodpigeon and Goldfinch were good to see at home.

Photos taken today in this set; one of a Greylag Goose and one of a Canada Goose on my lunch time walk at Lakeside which it was lovely to get close intimate views of by beach lake especially the greylag and hear them on the walk, a couple of landscapes at Lakeside, Kornwestheim lake at Lakeside with stunning reflections of trees something I enjoyed on the walk, my first crocuses and also one of my first blossom at Lakeside this year which was exciting, a group of luminous Goldfinches on a tree out the front, an interesting sky scene as the sun poked through a bit this afternoon and the shiny Silver-sided Sector spider the other side of the window tonight.
The Lakeside blossom and crocuses, alongside the beautiful yellow flower of forsythia on the hedge out the front, fused with seeing the pair of Great Crested Grebes at Lakeside again and some Black-headed Gulls there with delicious prominent dark brown summer plumage heads (I enjoyed seeing these closely on the green out the front at the end of the walk too) gave me an uplifting and enticing feeling of hope for spring days. Other standout species seen today were Robin at Lakeside and in the garden, Great Tit, Long-tailed Tit, violets and Wren heard at Lakeside.

13/02/2023-Lakeside and home
On another lovely lunch time walk at Lakeside today it was something of a gull fest with four species seen on beach lake, a lot of the usual Black-headed Gulls, Herring Gull including a juvenile, Lesser Black-backed Gull a key one for this time of year and two Common Gulls looking angelic in the strong winter sunlight. It was good to enjoy seeing them, I reflected when I photographed one at Hayling Island on Saturday how I’d not yet photographed a Lakeside Common Gull this year but have this winter and as if by magic I got these great chances to on my walk today the fourth picture in this photoset one of the ones I took. One of the birds seems to be loosing it’s shaggy head marks of winter plumage - its head getting plainer a move towards summer plumage - and these birds are winter visitors to Lakeside so it made me make the most of seeing them as they won’t be around too much longer. What a pleasure it has been to observe them at Lakeside fairly regularly for a third winter they’re a bird I have a lot of time for and excites me in such a unique way on my patch. Most of the usual procession of water birds were delights to see on the lovely lunch time walk; Mallard, Tufted Duck, Coot, Moorhen, Greylag Geese the fifth picture in this photoset showing one on more than one lake and Canada Geese across the site too which I got some stunning views of in the bright sunshine which I was pleased with as these birds get their feet under the table at Lakeside getting towards spring. I took the third and eighth pictures in this photoset of them. Long-tailed Tit and Blue Tit as well as stunningly singing Robins which was so nice to listen to that sound and sight feels the heart with joy stood out at Lakeside too. And I was pleased to hear the eccentric calls of Ring-necked Parakeets well. Goldfinches, Starlings, House Sparrow and Blue Tit as well as hearing it nicely too were at home avian highlights today.
I enjoyed seeing some exquisite red deadnettle springing into colourful action over the road on the way out for my walk, a powerful purple carpet I took the first picture in this photoset of some. It was great to enjoy the bits of yellow forsythia here too with daisies on the green out the front and nice leaves with black dots seen at Lakeside. It was wonderful to see a burst of colour from the catkins at Lakeside at lunch time, including hazel and alder catkins mixing nicely south of Kornwestheim lake. I took the ninth picture in this photoset showing some catkins seen from the northern path with ivy looking nice again at Lakeside I took the sixth picture in this photoset of some. It felt so indicative of early spring today with the pleasant temperature once I got walking and beautiful sunshine that had come out in time for my walk. I enjoyed stunning views especially focusing on sun kissed trees creating pleasing vistas together in areas at Lakeside and the grass and lakes including beach lake sparkling was so pleasurable and uplifting. A great release into nature on my working day. I took the second and seventh pictures in this photoset showing this. There were stunning sky scenes as the sun charged down and clouds shuffled across the sky this evening, I took the tenth photo in this set of the sun going down.
