At the start of this Manga it starts of as Mirai as a Genin chasing Cat at this time Kakashi is still hokage, this would have to take place before Boruto was 7 and after he was 5 meaning 5-7 but age of graduating Academy is 11 or 12 unless Mirai somehow graduated early so possibly at 9 turning 10 that year.

While Novel is different doesn’t show Mirai as a kid Genin and it takes place when Boruto is in academy it takes place after chapter 700 but because manga shows them as genin then it takes place after they graduate academy and not while there in academy, so the Novel version takes place after Chapter 700 and Before Naruto Gaiden The Seventh Hokage and Scarlet Spring.

Naruto Blank Period Timeline

I made this because 1) I'm bored, 2) I need to know a clear timeline of Blank Period in order to write fanfic, 3) I'm basically obsessed with timelines; nice to be able to understand everything in order. Keep in mind, this is almost all subjective and approximate. I put the comfort of relationship development first.

10 Oct 081 – The Fourth Shinobi World War ends.

Age: Naruto, Sasuke, Sai, Kiba, Shikamaru, Ino, Chouji, Lee, Tenten (16). Hinata, Sakura, Shino (15). Neji (17). Kakashi, Gai (30)

As can be seen here, Kakashi was born in 051 after the founding of Konoha. My timeline benchmark is this, including if you're wondering why there's a sudden Year 081 in this text.

Naruto turns 16 at the end of the war instead of 17 because Naruto is 12-13 years old in Part I, and Part II starts 2.5 years after, meaning Naruto is over 15 years old. There's no way the start of part II and the end of the war are more than a few months apart, as Kurenai gave birth to Mirai in the autumn after.

Gai entered the Academy a year earlier from Kakashi (remember, Kakashi graduated early, and it's no way that he and the other jounin-sensei entered the Academy in the same year). However, he was actually born in January of the same year. During the war, Kakashi has just turned 30, while Gai will soon turn 31.

I see it like this; for example, you have to be six years old to apply to the Academy. Because like in Japan, the Academy starts in April, so you must be six years old before April.

For Academy Year 072 enrollment, your birthday must be between 1 Apr 065 to 31 Mar 066. So Konoha 13's birth order are as follows: Neji, Sai, Lee, then the following year: Tenten, Chouji, Kiba, Sasuke, Shikamaru, Ino, Naruto, and Hinata. Shino and Sakura were born in the following year.

Around Nov 081 – Sarutobi Mirai is born

Shikamaru said she was born at the depth of autumn in Shikamaru Hiden.

Jun 081 – Kakashi Hiden, then Sasuke left the village

Age: Kakashi (30), Gai (31), Rookie 9 (16) except Chouji (17)

In manga chapter 699, it is seen that Sasuke left the village before Naruto received the prosthetic hand. Still, Kakashi has already become Hokage; even the carving of his face on the Monument has been completed. And it is said that Sasuke was pardoned for his crimes on behalf of the Rokudaime.

The problem is, in Kakashi Hiden, the prologue is written 'almost a year after the war', then chapter 1 takes place two months later. Naruto received a prosthetic hand at this two-month gap, while Kakashi's first Hokage assignment was at the story's end.

The caption in Kakashi Hiden's prologue is 'almost a year after the war'. ‘Almost a year after the war' means closer to six months or more than six months or less. Supposedly, Kakashi Hiden takes place around 8-10-14 months after the war, but I shortened it to 6-8-12 months because of this clash of events. I made Sasuke leave the village after Kakashi Hiden not before to make time for Team 7, so they can learn how to be friends again. This is important.

Oct 083 – Shikamaru Hiden, Shikamaru-Temari start dating at the end of the story

Age: Shikamaru (18), Temari (21), Mirai (2/3)

Shikamaru Hiden takes place two years after the war but before The Last. I put it in October to really fit two years, also so that Shikamaru turns 18 first. It made me more comfortable getting him to start dating Temari than she was at 17.

Late Dec 0083/Early Jan 084: The Last, Naruto-Hinata start dating at the end of the story

Ages: Naruto, Shikamaru, Sasuke (18), Hinata (17/18), Sakura (17), Sai (19), Hanabi (11), Konohamaru (12/13), Kakashi (32)

According to Naruto chapter 78, Hanabi is five years younger than Hinata. I put her birthday on 27 Mar 071, while Hinata was born on 27 Mar 065. They are five years and three months apart. Konohamaru was 8 years old in part I during Naruto's 12 years, so he was born on 30 Dec 069.

Mar 084 – Sakura Hiden, Chouji-Karui start dating at the beginning of the story, Ino-Sai start dating at the end of the story

Age: Sakura (17/18), Sai, Karui (19), Ino, Naruto, Sasuke, Hinata, Chouji (18), Kakashi (32)

Karui was born on 14 Feb 065. This puts her in the same situation to Chouji as Gai to Kakashi

Jun 084 – Sasuke Shinden; Sasuke returns to Konoha and starts dating Sakura

Age: Sasuke, Sakura (18)

Apr 087 – Konoha Hiden, Naruto and Hinata get married

Ages: Rookie 9, Gaara (21), Tenten, Lee, Sai, Kankuro (22), Iruka (31), Kakashi (35), Mirai (5)

These are the events that I moved the order of because:

1) If we follow canon order, the gap between The Last and Konoha Hiden is only a few months, maybe a year. When Boruto is a genin, people said it has been already 15 years after the war ended, which means Hinata gave birth to him when she was 20-ish.

The actual timeline if you want to follow canon strict is December/January is the Last, then a few months/a year later in April they married at age 19. March next year, Boruto was born.

I want to give them time to get to know each other. You know, deciding to get married with less than four months of dating is a BIG rush. Like, you started dating today, and tomorrow you propose...???

2) Konoha Hiden should have happened before Sasuke Shinden, but let's just say Sasuke is on another long-emergency mission here.

3) This, I think, makes Temari's nervous reaction reasonable; she and Shikamaru had been dating for some time and might have considered marriage at some point. Not become nervous just after a few not-so-so-dates.

4) In general, this allows couples to date longer and have more time to get to know each other, which is precisely what I needed. And I consider how complicated the bureaucracy of Karui and Temari moving to Konoha, especially the latter because she's the Kazekage's older sister.

5) Iruka is 4 years younger than Kakashi and 10 years older than Naruto

6) Temari is 3 years older than Shikamaru; she has born on 23 Aug 062. Kankuro is a year younger, but I can't get him born in 063 because that puts him only 8 months 22 days apart from Temari. This couldn't have happened, considering Karura's puerperal phase, and Kankuro not stated as not-full-term-baby. So, he was born on 15 May 064, 1 year 8 months 22 days younger than Temari.

7) Gaara was born prematurely on 19 Jan 066, 1 year 8 months 4 days after Kankuro. He should be a year younger than Naruto, which I originally meant to be a year younger in terms of the Academy school year (means he was born 067), but this wouldn't match the likely age for him to be made Kazekage.

Gaara just became Kazekage in the Konoha-Suna Chunin Exam filler arc, which somehow happened July/December 080 (the chunin exams are held biannually, remember?). Still, I lean more towards July, which makes Konoha 13, who takes the exam, matches canon's information on how old they were when they became chunin. Having Gaara born in 067 meant making him Kazekage at 13; this is... just NO.

So I made him born 'a year' after Naruto, aka being in a different year, but actually, he's only a few months younger. This will match their age when they appear in canon; Temari 15, Kankuro 14, and Gaara 12.

8) Unless the Academy's school year requirement changes to being X years old with birthday period on 1 Jan to 31 Dec, Shikadai must be six months older than Boruto. This means, in Konoha Hiden, Temari should have been pregnant, but we know she isn't. That's why the canon timeline makes no sense; I think the concept used is that as soon as the years go by, everyone is considered a year older, even if they haven't had a birthday. This is the cause of the mess, I believe.

Jul 087 – Gaara Hiden, Shikamaru and Temari got engaged and will be getting married in a few months

Ages: Gaara, Shikamaru (21), Kankuro (23), Temari (24)

What happened in Gaara Hiden in canon was he was already 20 years old, AND Temari was going to marry Shikamaru, so there was a crisis of heir to the Kazekage seat with full Suna blood. That's why he was asked to marry.

I could have put Gaara Hiden in 083, but I didn't do it for the sake of story consistency because it meant that Shikamaru had to get engaged and married before Naruto.

Around Sep-Dec 087 – InoShikaCho got married.

Ages: Ino, Shikamaru (21/22), Temari (25), Karui, Chouji (22), Sai (22/23)

Among the next generation (those born to a couple of ordinary parents, we didn't talk about Mitsuki), Chouchou is the eldest, born 8 Aug.

I want to keep them having children at relatively young age so that the future timeline doesn't change too much; Chouchou will be born in 088. However, for Chouchou to be born full-term (at least 39 weeks), Chouji and Karui must be married at least in mid-November. I put the order of marriage starting from Shikamaru, Chouji, then Ino because Inojin is the youngest. I imagine they got married as sequentially as possible to keep their children the same age, though if Ino got married in mid-Mar 088, it would still make sense.

Jun 088 – Sasuke and Sakura get married and travel together

Age: Sasuke, Sakura (22)

I put their marriage last because 1) Sarada is the youngest among the next generation of children, 2) I think Sasuke needs closure about Itachi, as I said here before deciding to get married and have children. You could have made this wedding happen earlier, but it's hard to go any further because it's determined by Sarada's birthday.

8 Aug 088 – Akimichi Chouchou was born to Chouji (23) and Karui (23)

23 Sep 088 – Nara Shikadai born to Shikamaru (23) and Temari (26)

5 Dec 088 – Yamanaka Inojin born to Ino (23) and Sai (24)

28 Mar 089 – Uzumaki Boruto was born to Naruto (23) and Hinata (23)

31 Mar 089 – Uchiha Sarada born Sasuke (23) and Sakura (23)

There is an opinion that Sarada was born early; that's why Karin, who helped deliver her at Orochimaru's hideout and her parents didn't have time to go to the hospital. I think at least if Sarada was born early, she should be born at 37 weeks pregnancy or more (pregnancy usually 40 weeks-long; 37 weeks is the early term, but the baby is considered healthy enough and not premature anymore), so that Sasuke and Sakura are confident enough travelling with a newborn in the wilderness. Getting Sasuke and Sakura married in June gives Sarada time to become a baby 37-40 weeks at birth, depending on the conception date.

04 Jun 091 – Uzumaki Himawari born to Naruto (25) and Hinata (25) as younger sister of Boruto (2)

Himawari is listed as 2 years younger than Boruto, but her date of birth is not listed. I gave her this date assuming the chunin exams in Boruto the Movie take place around mid-June to July, thus making Himawari's birthday sometime before the exams start. I could have Himawari's birthday around December and the chunin exams taking place around that month. However, Boruto episode 51 shows a pretty fresh flashback of Boruto's birthday, which means his and Himawari's birthdays aren't that far apart.

It was impossible and painful to piece together all the information from the Naruto databook(s), anime, manga, and novels into one coherent timeline. Yet, I tried my best to make sense of it by including as much information as possible.

I might try to make a Post-Blank timeline (Sasuke's departure again, when Naruto becomes Hokage) to Boruto later and list people's birth dates and years.

If there is any misinformation regarding this text, especially regarding the calculation of conception and pregnancy, you can told me, because I am really not an expert and just guessing with calculator.

my thoughts on the naruto hiden novels (except for akatsuki hiden bc i couldnt find a legitimate translation for it and it’s basically just a bunch of akatsuki flashback-sidestories)

kakashi hiden -- gets points for being about kakashi but also gets docked points for the badly done romantic tension between him and the female antagonist which took about 10 years off of my lifespan. however the characterization is good for the most part and the plot is v fun (hes just getting himself beat up on an airship which is both entertaining and distressing!). 8/10

shikamaru hiden -- i dont know if ive just lost most of all the investment i had in shikamaru’s character or whatever but this was very.... boring to me. i rewatched the anime’s adaptation of this and they’re both kinda. ehh. the anime is better than the novel but not by a lot. fairly mediocre overall. 4/10

sakura hiden -- this was surprisingly really fun to read (it actually reminded me a little of this fanfiction i rly liked). the action is great and sakura kicks ass here which is never something shes fully allowed to do in the anime. i think this one has the best antagonist out of all of the novels too. however theres still too much focus on her feelings for sasuke imo, queen just marry ino its ok. 8/10

konoha hiden -- personally i think it’s best to watch this arc in the anime. the novel has some cute moments showcasing the thoughts of the characters and it’s nice to see like an entire chapter dedicated to the ramen guy but also iruka’s importance is lessened by a lot which i was kind of sad about bc his role in the arc in the anime was my favorite part. 5/10

gaara hiden -- gaara i love you so much but your side story is uhhhh bad . honestly i was kinda irked abt how much of the story focused around him and his arranged marriage bc gaara never marries anyway so whats the point. the final battle was very weird too bc why is he fighting all of these people if his intentions were to protect them all along??? 3/10

This was hard because there are so many moments I wanted to include. I had to have the self control not to just pick 10 moments from the Konoha Shinden.

TOP TEN KAKAGAI MOMENTS

10. "I can’t believe you couldn’t return a single punch after what they said about your father.“

Kakashi rushing in and saving Gai from two grown men who were beating him up. This moment reads just like so many from the official couples’ backstories, it’s honestly uncanny. And Kakashi is so furious at them.

9. “Doesn’t he remind us of someone? Especially… the eyebrows.”

The fact that Kakashi and Gai scoped out the little kids together is strangely sweet, especially since Kakashi wasn’t too keen on getting his own team. It was really cute that Kakashi lightly teased Gai about how much Lee reminded him of a younger Gai.

8. “You did this to Kakashi?”

Gai’s big rescue and first showdown with Kisame, where Kakashi was dead meat and barely holding on until he saw Gai arrive. Kakashi finally passing out because he felt safe enough with Gai taking over says so much, and the way Gai turns his back on the enemy and gently lifts Kakashi out of the water over his shoulder says even more. Itachi retreated for a reason, Gai was pissed that they had hurt Kakashi this badly.

7. “He’s nice, isn’t he?”

The tempura scene. Kakashi loathes tempura, but he orders it just because it makes him happy to see Gai eat it off his plate. That’s the most domestic thing ever. And then Kakashi gushing to Mirai about it right after. Plus, he eats and pulls his mask down in front of Gai, no slight of hand or anything. He’s perfectly comfortable taking off his mask in front of Gai. He did it at an angle that obscured his face from Mirai’s view, but not from Gai’s.

6. “I have to take care of him…”

When Gai mentioned, way back in the chunin exams, that Kakashi can cut through lightning, who would have thought that Gai was the one who he did it for? That Kakashi found the strength out of nothing just to protect Gai was touching, and so was the scene where Gai promised to protect him afterwards.

5. “It’s not like this is the last one. You and I are eternal rivals. That will never change. Guy, it’s reassuring to me that we have someone as earnest as you. I’ll be counting on you from now on. I can’t protect this village by myself.”

The race is fantastic, and so is the scene before the race where Gai checks on Kakashi, but the scene after the race has to be my favorite part. Kakashi is just so openly moved by Gai’s gesture. This is one of the scenes where he’s most open and forthcoming about how much Gai means to him.

4. “I’d underestimated you a little, Gai.”

In Kakashi Hiden, Kakashi has a flashback to when Gai was discharged from the hospital. He remembers everything about it so vividly, from the weather to the faces Gai made to all the times Gai struggled and cried and broke down in frustration. And what he remembers most of all is how Gai never failed to put on a brave face and ensure Lee that he was just fine. It’s one of the moments where Kakashi sincerely acknowledge’s Gai’s strength of character.

3. “Guy… are you really…?!”

Kakashi’s reaction to Gai finally opening the 8th gate. In the manga and especially in the anime, it speaks for itself. Kakashi’s eyes go wide, he trembles in shock, he keeps asking Gai in disbelief if he was really going to do it. Their lives together flashed before his eyes. This is the definitely scene I think about as proof that Kakashi deeply, deeply cares about Gai and wants him around.

2. “I don’t think there’s a cooler shinobi than your dad.”

Kakashi being nice at all, pre-Obito’s death, is pretty amazing. The fact that he apparently went here with Gai to listen to his problems and told Gai that he admired Dai more than anyone else is so touching, and you can tell how much it meant to Gai to hear that.

This has to be my number one. They adapted this scene perfectly. Kakashi and Gai, happy and retired, looking back on their lives together and thanking each other for being there, saying they wanted to continue staying by each other’s sides forever. This is kakagai in a nutshell.

A New Possession- Entry #8

Hello once again Saiino nation!

I am back with a new entry. Since my recent health dilemmas and work schedule, I have decided that daily entries might be a bit too far of a stretch. Summer is fast approaching, and there is so much I want to do besides work on this. That doesn't mean I'm taking a break, however. I'm just going to be laying off a bit on myself.

That being said, I hope you all enjoyed my connecting one shot, because here we see the fallout from that narrative. This dilemma will not last too long, but I wanted something to bridge between The Last Movie and the Sakura Hiden, which occur at least 3 months from eachother. I also had put some pressure on myself by switching gears to Ino's perspective and then immediately jumping back into poor, heartbroken Sai.

My boyfriend is at work as I post this, so there may be potential edits to this entry. I was so psyched about this entry that I didn't want to wait for him, lol.

Anyway, enjoy this well overdue entry, (aka the Christmas fallout)

I’m an idiot

Here I went and destroyed a friendship over my ignorance and carelessness. In an attempt to gratify Ino, I tried to perform a friendly gesture on Christmas Eve, but instead I made her unable to stand my presence. She suddenly left with no explanation, so I still don’t fully understand what I did to cause her departure. All I know is that she has now started to avoid me. I guess my “weirdness” has finally scared someone away. I am not even sure how I am supposed to apologize to her when she is not even allowing me an opportunity. I wouldn’t know what to say, regardless.

I’m not fully sure what to make of it, but I feel like there is some hidden meaning that I’m just not seeing. I’ve read extensively on women, concluding that they are complex beings that no man has ever been able to understand and Ino is definitely no exception. She seemed to have been fine the entire night with her usual straightforwardness. There had even been a few moments when something she had said caught me off guard. But it was as if it all changed when we entered my apartment that she started acting strange. Under careful observation, she appeared to fidget a lot more even after I had told her to sit still, her face shining red. There must’ve been a war going on inside her mind that I did not truly notice until she abruptly stood up.

No, I was too absorbed in my work to notice. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t enjoying myself at that moment. Being able to share with others is my main joy as an artist. Shin’s praise had been the driving force for what would later on become the only thing I consider a passion. And now that passion is being turned into a cycle of torture that I can only describe as:

Yearning…

Since the Christmas debacle, I have only wanted to create in her image. I believe this to be because I had been interrupted in my first musings of her. I have become unsatisfied. Unfinished sketches litter my floor, all of her.

Faceless...

With every attempt, I lose myself at her eyes before giving up completely and starting a new one. Temptations of going to see her just for her eyes have all but overtaken me and it’s maddening.

I’ve felt more lost than ever. Distracted by my guilt, I had missed a good chunk of Konoha’s New Years celebrations. During Lee’s annual New Year’s gathering, I felt detached. Hovering in place unaware of my surroundings as everyone else participated in the festivities, every now and then throwing glances at Ino. She had been unusually reserved that night, holding the same drink in her hand.

Ino was almost always inebriated during holiday gatherings such as these, louder and more unapologetically honest than usual. I guess she had been in her own world then and it made me feel even worse.

It’s been five days since that party, and all that time has been spent in constant regret and stuck drawing the same faceless woman.

The woman I can’t face myself.

The winter holiday is ending, so that means it will be back to work soon and my time will once again be nearly expended. Holidays for shinobi were never common, but now come more frequently since peace has been enacted between the nations. With less time on my hands means less time spent worrying over my current bonds, but also takes time away for me to prepare a proper apology.

I recently confided in Sakura, who shared my sentiments over Ino’s behavior and assuring me that it was “weird, even for her.” She had allegedly been unsuccessful in her attempts to “pry” information out of Ino, which naturally caused Sakura to also worry. They had been long term friends after all. Despite this, Sakura assured me that she would get to the bottom of it, but I would personally prefer to contact Ino myself as difficult as that might be. There has to be a way to make her see eye to eye with me so we can properly communicate.

Perhaps I just need to speak her language. And I might just have a book that can help me.

I hope you enjoyed this chapter. I am leading into a conclusion soon, so look out for that.

I am so happy to finally be able to have a successful writing project. I've been attempting to write like this for nearly 5 years now, and I can finally say that I am consistently writing to the best of my ability. I hope you guys are not discouraged by my slight distance from what I set out to accomplish with this fic, but with normal life slowly but surely returning to my area, I realize that it might be a little too much for me to do in my spare time.

Regardless, I want to thank you for supporting this story so far. Besides for my personal enjoyment of writing, I prioritize the comprehension and feelings of my readers. So once again, thanks a bunch and as always criticism and comments are welcome!

Naruto Timeline After the War

Okay soooo, I know there's already an official timeline made by SP but I don't think it make much sense. I mean, how is it that Naruto got married at 20 and had a child at 20? And the fact that Sakura, Temari, Ino and Karui had children in the same year?? It doesn't make sense but then again, it's canon. However, I have thought long and hard and I've come up with my own timeline that I think (hopefully) makes more sense than what they gave us.

So here it is: (I'll be using Naruto's age as the year reference)

Year 17 10 October * Fourth Shinobi World War ends * Naruto turns 17 * Naruto and Sasuke's final fight

A few days later * Mass memorial takes place for the victims of the war

November/December * Shinobi Union is formed * Shikamaru becomes the union's planner

Oh and one more thing, I couldn’t decide where to bring Mitsuki into this. I’m not really sure when Orochimaru created him... was it the year Boruto was born or sometime later? I wasn’t sure so I didn’t put him in. But, Mitsuki’s brithday has been officially confirmed to be on 25 July. Idk, really.

Approaching Sun

Author’s Note: In honor of Valentine’s Day, I’m announcing the start of a new post-Sasuke Shinden fic. This story will address the development of Sasuke and Sakura’s relationship after Sasuke returns to the village following Sasuke Shinden. ***This fic is tightly adapted to the Sasuke Shinden and Sakura Hiden light novels. Please read the novels or refer to the summaries here and here. I’m tired of waiting for their story, so have decided to write it myself. Let me know what you guys think!

Summary: After 2 years, Sasuke returns to the village where friends anxiously await him. Still troubled by the mysteries of Kaguya and his personal guilt, Sasuke is split between friends and his journey. One specific pink-haired individual has perhaps waited for him with far more dedication than anyone else. Troubled by rising casualties and international dependence on her abilities, Sakura is torn between her love for Sasuke and her duty to her village.

Chapter 1: A New Dawn

Looking down at the letter in his hands, Uchiha Sasuke read the sloppy script slowly. It was from Naruto, who was congratulating him on his success protecting the Hidden Leaf Village. His idiot friend was saying something about the Uchiha’s quest of atonement and then mentioned how Sakura thought his efforts were very much like the members of the once proud Konoha Police force. Maybe it was the overwhelming sense of nostalgia that came with those words that had the Uchiha turning on his heels. Or maybe it was this sudden desire to stand, if just for a moment, in front of that building that had once displayed the crest of his clan. Flashes of his older brother carrying him on his back came to the front of his mind. Perhaps it was time he returned home.

Sakura gathered the herbs she needed for the healing poultice she had in mind. Turning, she began to walk briskly down the road towards the hospital. The pink-haired nurse struggled to meet the new demands that were left in the wake of the recent phenomena of exploding humans. Sadly, there was nothing to be done for the innocent lives who had been used as bombs. However, with Hinata’s help, Sakura was able to recognize and remove any strange chakra that was present in other individuals. Other medic ninjas in the lands of Water and Lightning quickly followed the kunoichi’s lead soon after she relayed her methods to Kirigakure and Kumogakure. Within weeks, the foreign chakra had vanished and the villages soon pursued their pre-existing peace. Haruno Sakura was then able to look at the various other injuries related to the strange explosions. Ninja who had been injured during their attempts to stave off exploding humans were her most pressing patients and suffered mainly from severe burns. Burns were well within her range of healing capability. However, Sakura’s supply of expendable chakra could only be stretched so far. She began to feel a little fatigued by the end of the day and more and more burn victims were coming in by the hour. Not only this, but the other villages were facing the same demands. For the benefit of herself and the other villages, Sakura spent the evenings developing a very strong burn solvent that could easily be replicated and passed on. The herbs she had now, were just what she needed.

Clanging into the medical lab at 2:00 a.m. wasn’t an abnormal habit of hers anymore. Except for the few late night roamers and ninja on watch, there weren’t many individuals up this late. Sakura found that this was her best time for productive and undistracted work. Laying out her medical supplies on the table before her, she began her craft immediately. Her plan was to create a compound that acted as a second skin, thin but hard enough to touch without peeling away. The idea was that as the solution dried over the burned skin, a protective shell would form on the outside while keeping the medicine on the inside. Over time, with frequent application combined with chakra, the covering would allow new skin to form without damage from reopening or splitting. How she would manage to create this, she only had a faint idea. But that’s why she was here to test and experiment.

Sakura looked down at her left arm. Although there were several adequate patients being housed at the hospital due to their critical condition, Sakura felt that neither waking them up at this hour or using them as guinea pigs were good for their recovery. On the bright side, she had managed to carefully collect chakra throughout the afternoon and had enough in store to continuously heal any minor self-inflicted injuries that could react sorely to her new cure.

Glancing over to the wall, Sakura found a candle that she had lit previously. Grasping it in her right hand, she held the flame under the bottom of her forearm, allowing it to sear her skin. She didn’t even flinch. The pain was more than bearable in comparison to anything she had ever suffered as a ninja. She applied the solution gradually to the charred place on her arm and slightly frowned at the severe stinging sensation spreading across her arm. She bent down over her scroll and noted to add less harrow leaf in the mixture, then began to proceed.

Sakura lost track of time as the faint line of sunshine began to trace the outcropping of trees beyond the village gates. It seemed that the sun was rising earlier and earlier recently. Glancing down at the large mess she had made in front of her, Sakura sighed and lifted up the small container she held in her hand before her. It wasn’t much to show for her efforts but she would let the results speak for her.

6:23 a.m. She had done it again. That was twice this week that the kunoichi had gone without sleep. Her shift at the hospital began at 8. Perhaps if she hurried home, she could catch an hour of sleep. She frowned down at the mess on the table. She’d clean it up before work, she thought as she walked out the door and down the stairs. Sakura carried the new medicine with a growing pride and relief, thinking solely of her patients.

She stopped mid-step when she sensed a very familiar chakra slowly approaching the village. Instantly on guard, she snapped her head in the direction of the village gates. Could this be real or was it another trick? Perhaps it was another Sasuke clone intent to capture her. How many times had she imagined this very thing to happen? Was it still her hopeful imagination? Sakura waited a minute for her head to clear. The chakra grew increasingly and steadily. Forgetting sleep, Sakura ran towards the gates.

Sasuke stepped off of the forest path, stopping as he looked at the familiar sight of the leaf village gates looming above him. Taking in a deep breath, the Uchiha sighed and began to walk forward. Returning was difficult for him, for many reasons. First, being in the village meant that he wasn’t tracking down Kaguya and Sasuke couldn’t help the nagging feeling that he was losing time. Not only this, but being in the village posed a risk to everyone around him. He was the last Uchiha and even after achieving the peace between nations, there were still individuals who sought him for his power. Chino and Fushin were two of many that Sasuke knew would come for him.

He removed all emotion from his face as he approached the guards waiting for him at the entrance. It had been years since he left the village but Sasuke knew better than to pretend that these people might overlook his past crimes. He was lucky to leave the village at all, barely being able to escape an eternity of darkness in a strait jacket. However, instead of being given a cold greeting by the guards, two men whom he barely recognized, lifted their hands in greeting.

“Uchiha?“they called out, squinting through the morning darkness. As he came closer, the two men gave him large grins as they recognized the face that matched his chakra.

“Welcome home!” they replied in unison. This was not the greeting that Sasuke had prepared himself for. Since his return after the war and even up until his departure, he had gotten looks of disgust from everyone he came into contact with: ninja, civilians, and even Akamaru had growled at him when Sasuke happened to pass by him; he had frowned at the dog and was tempted to tell the mutt that he liked cats better. Most of these encounters, of course, happened in the very beginning, right before higher authorities demanded that the Sixth Hokage bind him and lock him in prison. He hadn’t expected anything else from the village he betrayed and offered no resistance when Kakashi escorted him directly from the battlefield to the jail. He would pay for his mistakes, willingly.

The guards in front of Sasuke, however, didn’t flinch or sneer at him as he made his approach. In fact, they began to congratulate him on defeating Chino and stopping the exploding humans. As he turned to acknowledge them, Sasuke felt a mixture of feelings with those words. Should he be happy that the village knew about his efforts to protect them? Sasuke had originally planned to be the village’s burden wielder, just like his older brother. The man working in the shadows. Itachi never received the gratitude that he had deserved, so why should he? Sasuke fought down the familiar anger that rose in his throat at the thought. He sighed. Even though he still felt uncomfortable with this praise, he remembered that he wasn’t that angry person anymore. He had changed.

“Sasuke-kun?”

Glancing to his right, Sasuke saw a familiar pink-haired kunoichi. The sun was rising steadily behind him and the pale dawn illuminated her features, making her hair seem a darker shade of pink. It was shorter, he noted. It had been over two years since he’d last seen her. She stood a few feet away from him, just inside the gates and made no attempt to come forward. She was panting slightly and he guessed that she had run here when she picked up on his chakra. He hadn’t been expecting to see her at this hour in the morning. In fact, his goal was to arrive before dawn as to avoid as much attention as he possibly could.

He moved away from the guards and closer to the person he had once considered to be dear to him. He stood in front of her, a swarm of childhood memories coming back to him. It seemed so long ago and the visions seemed to belong to someone else; the person who Sasuke was trying to bring back a little more each day. The Sasuke he had been only three years ago certainly wouldn’t have given the memories much consideration. Maybe he was changing after all.

Sakura’s eyes grew big at his nearness and she remained silent, utterly speechless at the miracle in front of her. Sasuke guessed her thoughts and decided he would break the silence this time.

“I’m home, Sakura.”
