Random Appreciation Post
Guess who just found a new favorite fictional character?
Me, that's who.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Goddamnit I would hate his lifestyle, he's just the most boring ass bland Guy TM but I love him.
Beige. So much beige it makes some of my Guy TMs look downright ecentric
His buisness basically just is Bland TM everything, from songs to cereal to f-ing odourless perfume
He's just so happy being the most boring guy in existence and you know what, go ahead you do you buddy
Say what you want, but he's fashionable. Most monochome outfit in the world and it looks good on him
I just think he's neat.

For my fellow fibre arts witches, if you're starting to get the Annual Cold Weather Fidget, that driving urge to reach for hooks and needles and that big bin of spools and fabric lurking in your closet....
If you feel like Doing A Witchcraft, you can work some witchy into whatever you're making. Weaving, crocheting, knitting, nalbinding, stitching, embroidery, and knotwork can all carry magic and serve as a vehicle for creating spells, sigils, talismans, or enchanted wearables.
Am I saying you can put a spell into that pair of socks you're knitting? That scarf you've been working on? That pile of granny squares waiting to become a blanket? That cross-stitch piece you've been meaning to finish?
ABSOLUTELY.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are even books on knot magic, witchy crochet and knitting patterns, and beautifully spooky cross-stitch and embroidery pieces. (And lots more downloadable patterns exist on etsy and fibre arts forums!) Perfect for chilling with your favorite hot beverage and current binge-watch while you keep your hands from getting bored.
Go forth and have fun with it!

DNA Pullover
It's done!!

I love how it came out - I made SO many modifications to the fit. The sweater was written for a boxy, typically-male silhouette, and I am Not That. I shortened the arms and regraded their shaping, widened the body, and moved the shoulders in by a few inches to fit my frame.
The shoulders fit bang-on on top of my actual shoulder, which is so exciting, and the sleeve cap fit perfectly into the shoulder, too. I put a lifeline in when I knit the first shoulder cap to make sure I could rip it back out if it didn't fit, but I didn't need to!
Overall, absolutely happy with this sweater. It's super comfy, and the yarn (High Desert Worsted from KnitPicks) is suuuuper soft and cozy.

how to tie a magic knot (for joining yarn to keep working continuously)
Tumblr media
lay the end of the current yarn and start of the new yarn like so
Tumblr media
bring the top strand over the bottom strand, loop it under, and bring it back up
Tumblr media
pass it over itself to form a knot like so, and tighten it up a little. you can slide this knot along the bottom strand, so push it along out of the way
Tumblr media Tumblr media
do the same thing with the other side: pass the bottom yarn up over the top yarn, wrap underneath, back down, around itself and form a knot
Tumblr media
pull the long tails on both knots to bring them together and tighten them as tight as you can. the knot will be tiny, and impossible to undo again.
Tumblr media
cut off the short ends. you can cut right down to the knot. i promise. it is not going anywhere. a) pulling on either end will only ever tighten it and b) it is formed of two mirror-image knots brought together to a singular knot very tightly. those short ends aren't unravelling ever again
Tumblr media Tumblr media
go on your merry way and keep working. the knot will be barely perceptible.

Tumblr media
it's 250g of a bfl/silk/llama blend
i split each braid down the middle (more or less) to hopefully preserve the colour gradient & make some 2-ply
Tumblr media Tumblr media
looks like it will come out to a light-fingering-to-fingering weight :D

A little Brook I made for a friend :)
[ID: A photo of a knitted version of Brook from One Piece. His body is covered by a white circular tube of knitted fabric, meant to resemble the pillowcase he briefly wore on Whole Cake. His mouth is embroidered with black thread, resembling a straight line with short parallel stitches across it. His nose is embroidered as well, and his eyes are two black buttons. His hair has been crocheted to the skull with thick black yarn in such a way that it is curled to make his afro. End ID.]

Got into knitting recently and was wondering about spells/rituals/meditations/etc that could be done with that. Would that be a kind of knot magic? Should I look more into that first?
Absolutely! Knitting, crocheting, sewing, nalbinding, weaving, embroidery...all of these things can be potential vehicles for spellwork, if you wish to do so.
I'm a crocheter myself, and I find that the steady pace and stitch-counting for whatever pattern I'm working on is very soothing and also lends itself well to magic. When I sit down to make something that I want to put a spell into, I try to focus on (or at least keep in mind) the magical intention I'm going for and anchor it with the stitches every few rows. I'm sure knitting would work along the same lines.
There are at least half a dozen books out there with suggestions and project patterns for crocheted or knitted witchy crafts. I've gotten a few good ideas from Brandy Williams' "Cord Magic" (although admittedly I'm just starting to get into that particular branch of magic). "Fiber Magick" by Opal Luna is on my TBR and it looks like it has a lot of good reviews. There's also a book called "Dark & Dramatic Mosaic Crochet" that I want to get purely for the patterns.

techniques i use in c2c crochet (and all other applicable crochet scenarios, really) people might find useful i can post tutorials on as i go
butterfly bobbins - you do not need cardboard or plastic bobbin winders to make bobbins you can just wind yarn in such a way it forms a bobbin by itself for $0 (and with 0 tiny fiddly things you will inevitably lose somewhere)
magic knot - join yarn to keep working in such a way that a) will not come undone and b) does not require any weaving of ends
there is no shorthand official name (as far as i know) but "joining a new colour in a way that does not leave an end you have to weave in later". call it lazy join or something idk
obviously you can just. look up how to do those (except the last one bc i don't know what - if anything - it's called or if it's just something i do because i will avoid weaving at all costs) but if anybody wants and would find it useful i can just take photos of the process next time i do it in this blanket and then post it like that one time i did "how to wind a centre-pull ball" or "doing surgery on a c2c blanket to replace a square"
