Bruce Wayne should be an old fashioned gothic romantic. When he actually falls in love with someone he should get a little weird and intense about it. “Alfred, how do I tell them I want to crawl into their very veins and pump their blood with my own hands without freaking them out” type shit.

I've been thinking about how much I actually dislike Damian becoming Batman as an adult and how I think it would be way more impactful for his character if he broke away from both of his parents and formed his own identity, which led me to "Well, who should become Batman then?" and well. What if nobody becomes Batman after Bruce steps down. The family carry on his mission, his message, but not his title, because Bruce helped them become something else, helped them become better than him. The goal was never to become the next Batman, it was for them to grow and learn and become their own people. Batman never dies, he is an eternal symbol, but one that they all wear instead of physically inhabit. I think as Bruce ages he should realise that Gotham doesn't need Batman, because now it has so much more than just Batman.

I love fics where Hal and Bruce are secretly married and have been for years, but imagine if they got married before Hal became the Green Lantern. They meet through Carol, bond over planes, and Hal learns Bruce is Batman while visiting him in Gotham and coincidentally getting attacked by one of his rogues. He's pretty accepting of his boyfriend being Batman, he's a thrill seeker who also tragically lost a parent, he gets it more or less. Having found someone so understanding, they tie the knot.

And then, one day, Hal just goes missing. For months. Bruce is tearing up the streets of Gotham in case somehow one of his enemies knew what Hal was to him. He searches all of Coast City too, and boy are they surprised to see Batman brooding around, but he finds nothing, Hal has gone without a trace.

And then some bright green annoyance lands in Gotham and good god Bruce is going to destroy whoever this light show is- and he's greeted by his missing husband who grins at him and is like "So, crazy story-"

Hal and Bruce get married and the kids start gifting Hal stepdad related gifts because it is pretty funny to see him that way and Hal comes down to breakfast one day in a "I'm not the step dad, I'm the dad that stepped up" shirt and Bruce is like "Okay really? I think Damian is really good at painting nails, like not only can he perfectly apply coats of nail polish he's also really good at doing teeny tiny nail art. Stephanie and Duke regularly come to him and let him try out cool designs on them

So you know how Dick became Batman and Damian was his Robin for a bit? And in DCeased Damian becomes Batman and Steph is his Robin? I think every possibly combo of one of the kids taking up the Batman mantle and another being their Robin is so good, but Batman Damian and Robin Jason is by far the funniest potential duo. Tiny 5'5" Batman and 6'4" brick wall Robin. It would be so good.
