The Fatal Triwizard Tournament 1792 PART II
Part II
Kronkk was being carried around the hull of the ship on the shoulders of the other Dursmtrang students, they were chanting her name as Folx was handing out butterbeers to everyone. Stana, a 6’5 fellow seventh year, was dancing around to the music causing the ship to shake.
Kronkk was smiling ear to ear, she was going to win this competition and everyone was going to know her name. That Hogwarts girl would see her win.
The next morning Kronkk made her way to the Champion meeting. The Hogwarts Headmaster Rowling immediately began her speech.
“The first task will take place on November the twenty-fourth, in front of the other students and the panel of judges. The champions are not permitted to ask for or accept help of any kind from their teachers to complete the tasks in the tournament. The champions will face the first challenge armed only with their wands. They will receive information about the second task when the first one is over. Owing to the demanding and time consuming nature of the tournament, the champions are exempted from the end-of-year tests”
Kronkk glanced to her left, the Beauxbaton girl stood next to her smelling strongly of flowers, a large gold necklace with the letter A hung from her neck. She looked harmless, which Kronkk knew meant she must be a fierce competitor. Next to her stood the Hogwarts champion, she was listening intently to the Headmaster, her eyes never wavering. “Oh, she’s got something to prove,” mused Kronkk. She had her work cut out for her if she was to win this, but she had never failed at anything before and she wasn’t going to start now.
~~~
That monday Vivian woke up later than normal with a headache, she spent the whole weekend stopping students from sneaking around at night trying to get glimpses of the guests. One Hufflepuff had even managed to get himself stuck in a window pane trying to sneak out, and it took her and Beswick over an hour to free him. Pulling on her robes she noticed Opabinia had left her a piece of toast on her dresser. Shoving it in her mouth Vivian hurried to her first class, double Herbology.
When she arrived she entered a tense scene, Mena and Opabinia were glaring at each other, Professor Bells nowhere in sight.
“You’re just jealous,” Mena said, her voice icy.
“Please, I would never be jealous of you and your poor family,” Opabinia said, rolling her eyes as the room gasped, “I just know that with you as Champion Hogwarts doesn’t stand a chance at victory.”
“Take that back or I’ll hex you, you evil-”
“Stop!” Vivian yelled, stepping between them. She knew this had little to do with the tournament and more to do with Mena dating Kief Bowl only a day after her break up from Opabinia last year.
“You’re lucky your best friend is Head Girl or you would be in the hospital wing,” Mena spat before turning and walking away.
Vivian grabbed Opabinia’s wand arm, preventing her from doing something rash, “Let it go,” she hissed under her breath.
~~~
Kronkk had never been in a more confusing castle, she hoped one of the tasks wasn’t a scavenger hunt, she would get lost forever in here. Cursing under her breath she turned in circles. Where even was the Great Hall? She swore she took that stairwell the other day to it, but now she was just in an empty corridor.
Two Gryffindor students suddenly appeared out of nowhere and approached her, “We made you welcome cookies Champion. Please have some.”
Kronkk glanced down at the plate, there were assorted cookies with welcome written on them in dark icing. Not wanting to be rude she reached for one. The students beamed in happiness, after taking a bite they laughed, throwing the rest of the cookies and plate at her face and ran off.
The moment they disappeared around the corner Kronkk knew why, the cookie was poisoned, she clutched her stomach, the pain intense. A terrible prank. She now knew Gryffindors were the worst house.
~~~
Vivian and Opabinia began to walk out of Herbology and back towards the castle when a voice called out behind them, “Malfoy!”
Opabinia turned around, “Yes Professor Bells?”
“Stay back and help me set up for the next lesson will you.”
Opabinia let out a small sigh, “See you later then Vivi.”
Vivian gave her a small smile and made her way alone back through the castle. She had a free period for studying and wondered if she should study by the library or maybe she might just go outside, possibly catch a glimpse of Kronkk on the Durmstrang ship.
Shaking her head at her foolishness, Vivian turned and headed towards the library.
Turning a corner she spotted Kronkk. She was hunched over and clutching her stomach, looking green in the face. As Vivian made eye contact Kronkk looked anything but happy to see her. Vivian couldn’t help but feel hurt. “The girl doesn’t even know you, stop being dramatic” she thought to herself.
“Are you okay?” Vivian asked, feeling it would be rude to just turn and walk away now.
“Still getting used to the food here,” Kronkk said, faking a laugh, “trying to make it back to the ship and get some medicine.”
“I know somewhere closer,” Vivian said, “Trust me she’s the best.”
Vivian led Kronkk down the hall in silence, fidgeting with her hands as she walked. She wanted to reach out to comfort her but didn’t want to make her uncomfortable. She was the one with the obsession problem, Kronkk was just the Durmstrang champion who probably just wanted peace from gawking strangers.
Vivian took a sigh of relief when they reached the Hospital Wing doors.
“This is Madam Terfectly, our school’s healer,” she said, opening the doors to a rosy cheeked woman. Kronkk gave a nod.
“Oh M’deary are you alright?” Madam Terfectly said, ushering Kronkk forward, “Stomachache is it? I got just the tonic for that.”
Vivian watched them walk off. Unsure what to do now, she turned and began to wander aimlessly down the hall. Wondering what it would feel like to be the one to nurse her back to health.
~~~
The medicine started to work and it just made her feel worse. Kronkk scowled into her hands. She had made a fool of herself in front of the Hogwarts girl, again. No wonder she was glad to be rid of her and ran off.
The healer was singing to herself, arranging tonics in the corner. She wouldn’t let her leave until she had a smile on her face, her exact words. Kronkk had to resist pulling out her wand to hex her when she said that.
The doors burst open and a sobbing first year with a tongue that was over twice his size came in escorted by an exasperated professor. Kronkk chuckled to herself seeing the Gryffiindor robes on the boy.
Madam Terfectly ran over to him causing a cart to fall over with a crash, “I got just the cure for you!”
Kronkk took this distraction as an opportunity to quickly leave, rushing out, she ran down the hall as if Terfectly might just be chasing her down, half hoping to see the Hogwarts girl again. Turning the corner she crashed into a random Hogwarts student, causing her to fall to the ground
“Hey, watch it!” The Slytherin scowled, standing back up.
“You’re a Slytherin!”
The Slytherin rolled her eyes in response at the obvious statement
“You’re in the same house as that one girl who was watching the Goblet and who’s always patrolling the halls, what’s her name?” Kronkk said, speaking a mile a minute.
The Slytherin's eyes narrowed, “What about her?”
“I just want to know,” Kronkk felt herself start to stutter, “She helped me find Madam Terfectly and I wanted to know who to thank. That’s all.”
“Her name’s Vivian Radicallyaligned,” The Slytherin said, suspicion still in her voice.
Vivian. Vivian. Vivian. What a beautiful name.
“Thanks,” Kronkk said, rushing off, warmth spreading through her chest. Her name was Vivian.
~~~
“That Durmstrang champion was asking about you,” Opabinia said as they walked to potions class.
“What?” Vivian said, dropping her books. She knelt to the ground and quickly gathered them.
“Yea, it was strange.”
“What did she say about me? Do you think she likes me? Er I mean did she ask about me in a bad way? Or in a way I should be concerned about? Or was it more of a slightly bad way? Was she annoyed at me?”
“Woah,” Opabinia said, snapping her fingers in front of her face “What is with you? You need more sleep.”
“Nothing, I’m fine,” Vivian said, as they crossed into the classroom and made their way to their seats.
“She just asked what your name was, that’s all,” Opabinia said shaking her head, “These guests are strange, I don’t like that they’re here. I liked it better when it was just Hogwarts students.”
“She asked my name?” Vivian felt her cheeks turning red again. Kronkk knew her name? She could hardly believe it.
“Yea, I don't understand why she would care, seeing as she’s competing against Mena and all.” Opabinia huffed, “Not that she deserves to be competing seeing as I always outperform her in class.”
But Vivian wasn’t listening, she was daydreaming of Kronkk touching her hand again.
Hey do you want to talk about your FFTA OCs?? I want to hear about them...
OKAY i've had this ask sitting for a week and im so sorry abt that! I admittedly do not have... much for my FFTA OCs buT what i do have I really really dig so I hope that this interests u too, anon! gonna put this under a cut just cause it might get a little long!
Tumblr media
this is all based on characters I had during my last FFTA run and I kind of want to develop them as FFTA2 OCs as well cause I like the class selection in the second game much better. But for now here's my current somewhat developed members of Clan Nutsy!
all of their names are subject to change of course, and I do have other clan members in mind but I just haven't really drawn them at all yet FHLSD.
Mac is a White Mage, but spent a lot of his time in Clan life as a Black Mage. His last Clan before Nutsy was a rogue-ish group that hunted down bounties and targeted other Clans in Jagds, so a real nasty crew.
I have a headcanon that Black Magic affects Humes differently than Nu Mou or Moogles, who are also proficient with it. Which is why Black Mage Humes look so like... weird in comparison? Because Mac spent a lot of time involved with Black Magic and he was committing evil acts, his hands became permanently "scarred" and look all weird. they dont hurt or anything, but people would probably be super uncomfortable with seeing them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because of this he covers his arms in bandages, and he left his old clan on bad terms. he's kind of on the run from them because they really dont like when people leave!
At this time I like to think of him as the de-facto leader of the clan! personality-wise he's wise but hot-headed, and intelligent but absolutely stupid in some cases. His experience with various magics, though, make him a strong force to be reckoned with. He's absolutely the definition of the "I'm a healer, but-" meme
Roker is like the clan's second in command, and i ABSOLUTELY ship him and Mac. Roker is kind and strong, and wants to support his clanmates with his own two hands. He has simple motives but he has pure feelings. genuinely the best person.
Tumblr media
My idea for him is that he used to be a part of the Castle Guard as a Templar, but abandoned that once a corrupt king came into power. He spent time as a sword-for-hire before joining Clan Nutsy as a Gladiator. both he and Mac get along in a lot of ways because they have somewhat similar backgrounds, but they butt heads since they have different approaches with most problems. They balance each other out and I love them.
Roker's dream is to someday retire and live in the country or something. he's a lovely guy and MAN i just love Bangaa in general. I have more in mind besides him but nothing really fleshed out.
Tumblr media
Finn my BOY is a Mog Knight with a lot of Gunner abilities, so I like to think of him as having a Gunblade (even tho like obvs thats not in the game). He drinks, fucks, and overall is kind of just a fun guy to be around. But he's definitely a hard hitter on the team. I don't have much else for him but i love him.
Tumblr media
Odonel is my Moogle Juggler! He has some Tinkerer skills as well, and he's kind of just a chaotic little fella. I adore his design a lot and I wanna draw him more and flesh him out but he's probably got the least out of this whole group in terms of concepting and stuff put into him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and lastly my two Nu Mou! Kief is the one on the left here (art colored by my lovely partner btw!) and Elaine is the one on the right! Kief is relaxed and peaceful, a real chill guy. He specializes as an Illusionist with some interest in Beastmastery, even though he SUCKS with monsters. Elaine is transfem, and i like to think she was closeted when she joined the clan and then came out to her found family and everyone was like "fuck yeah" because that makes me happy. She is an Alchemist/Sage and she is also pretty darn powerful. I think i like the idea of her getting close to Kief, admiring his open nature and then kind of opening up to him about her gender experience and stuff. idk idk idk all very early concept stuff but it makes my heart worm.
but YEAHH thats all i rlly got so far!! if anyone has ideas im always open to them but also KJFLHDSF dont be sad if i dont go with ur ideas or smth im just here to have fun
ty for listening to me ramble if u got this far i love u
THE FINAL PART: The Fatal Triwizard Tournament 1792
The Yule Ball
“Where have you been?” Folx said, looking hurt as Kronkk tried to sneak in quietly.
“I thought you’d be asleep,” Kronkk said, sheepishly.
“I wanted to make sure you made it back safely, you fell hard. After they announced you won we all rushed to the medical tent, but they said you had already left. We figured you went back to the ship so we came back here. Stana started the party but you never showed up.”
Kronkk who was riding an emotional high now felt bad, “I’m sorry, I-I should have come here right away.”
“Where did you disappear off to, after the task?” Folx asked, arms still crossed.
Flashes of memories played back in her mind, and Kronkk felt her cheeks turn red, “I-er, I don’t remember. I got lost in that castle. You know me, can’t figure out this place. The staircases move. I swear I saw one of them disappear through a window.”
“Do you have brain damage from that fall?” Folx said coming closer, looking concerned.
“No,” Kronkk shook her head covering her neck with her hand, “I’m just tired.”
“Okay,” Folx said, eyes narrowed, “We are having another victory party tomorrow night and you better be at this one.”
“I promise,” Kronkk said, climbing into her hammock bed. She waited for the sounds of Folx’s snores to fill the room, before exhaling slowly.
The adrenaline from the race, the win, the kiss was starting to fade. Panic began to take over. She couldn’t be kissing a Hogwarts Head Girl, if the Durmstrang students found out they would turn on her quickly. Durmstrang was a close-knit group, and there was a clear set of rules. Durmstrang champions, especially the ones who won the tournament, had their portraits hung in the halls. Their descendents walked the halls and all outsiders were looked down on. As Champion Kronkk had to maintain the strong Durmstrang image, and that meant no foolish feelings for an outsider. Just daydreaming about Vivian would be considered a thought crime to them.
She couldn’t risk anyone finding out, but all she wanted was Vivian.
~~~
Vivian sat listening to Headmaster Rowling, “The Yule ball is approaching, open only to fourth years and above. It’s an opportunity for us to socialize with our guests. Dress robes are a requirement. The Ball will start at eight o’clock on Christmas day finishing at midnight in the Great Hall.”
It had been two weeks since the first task and Christmas was fast approaching. Vivian had dark circles under her eyes. On top of her Head Girl duties she now spent each night sneaking off to visit Kronkk. They spent hours talking, sharing, and snogging under the moonlight.
She and Kronkk had agreed that to maintain secrecy Kronkk would take a different girl as her date to the ball. She had a lot of options, girls were already falling over each other in the hallway asking her to take them to the ball.
Mena was taking Kief Bowl and Gabrielle Femmes-Honey was taking another Beauxbaton girl named Amber Sapphicgem to the ball. Kronkk was the last Champion left to decide.
Vivian, with Opabinia at her side, made her way through the busy corridor out to the courtyard, as they walked out into the cool sharp air Kronkk and her entourage passed by, walking in from their ship. Not being able to help herself Vivian extended her finger tips and let them brush against Kronkk’s hand as she passed, the swirl of robes covering their tracks. Vivian could see out of the corner of her eye Kronkk start to smile. It took everything in her to not grab and pull her back and kiss her in front of everyone.
Vivian was smiling to herself as she turned her attention back to Opabinia who was giving her a strange look. “What?” Vivian asked innocently.
“I hope you know what you’re doing,” Opabinia said in a hushed tone.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Vivian said, turning red.
“I knew it was someone, but her? Oh my god Vivi.”
“I don’t know what you are trying to imply but-” Vivian felt beads of sweat start to run down her face.
“Look when you’re ready to talk about it, I’ll be here” Opabinia said, exasperated, turning and walking off in a different direction.
~~~
Kronkk stood awkwardly in the doorway in the hull of the ship, “Er, Aussie, can I talk to you?”
Standing up, Aussie Disillusionedmonster, daughter of a previous Durmstrang Champion, walked over, a slight smile on her face, “Yes Kronkk?”
“Want to come to the ball with me?”
“I’ll be ready at seven,” Aussie leaned forward, giving Kronkk a quick kiss on the cheek, “See you then.”
Kronkk turned and walked away, wiping the kiss from her face. A necessary evil.
A week later on Christmas day, Kronkk pulled her dress robes on and turned to Folx, “does this look good?”
“You look absolutely ugly as usual,” Folx said with a grin.
“You look worse,” Kronkk said, giving Folx a joking shove, “It’s almost seven and I promised Aussie I would meet her.”
Kronkk walked out of the ship with Aussie at her side, it was snowing and fog spilled from her breath as she glanced around. If only she could share this moment with Vivian.
~~~
Vivian glanced around. Fairy lights were everywhere in contrast to the starry black ceiling, the walls covered in sparkling silver frost with garlands of mistletoe, there was even a statue of Father Christmas and his reindeer, all Headmaster Rowling’s idea.
The ball had just begun, all the Beauxbaton girls were dancing intricately, Vivian couldn’t help but wonder if they had been practicing these dances for months. The Beauxbaton champion had lifted her date above her head and was spinning her gracefully around the room. Vivian glanced over and saw Mena and Kief Bowl happily dancing together, Opabinia was glaring at them from near the punch bowl. Vivian turned to make her way to her best friend, to cheer her up.
As she moved she saw Professor Bells and Madam Terfectly slow dancing together to the upbeat song, there had been rumors for years that they were secretly married, but nothing had ever been proven.
~~~
Kronkk noticed standing by the punch bowl was Vivian and another Slytherin girl. Kronkk gestured “do you want some refreshments?” and lead Aussie over.
They pulled up alongside them, and Kronkk gave a smile, “lovely evening ladies.”
“I hope you both are enjoying the ball,” Vivian responded politely, as if she was a stranger.
“You have put on a wonderful event,” Kronkk said, puffing out her chest, “Hogwarts truly outdid itself this time.”
“Why thank you,” Vivian said, extending her hand, “My name is Vivian Radicallyaligned, I don’t think we’ve met before.”
The Slytherin girl gave a small snort as Kronkk took Vivian’s hand, and for a moment they were touching, in public, at a ball that should have been theirs.
“Enjoy the rest of your evening,” Vivian said, pulling her hand away and leading her best friend away with her. Kronkk could see them whispering as they walked away.
Kronkk turned back to Aussie, now full of energy, “Want to dance?”
~~~
“Vivian,” Professor Bells said, approaching her, “Will you please fetch a new tablecloth from the storage closet.” Vivian glanced over to see one of the tablecloths was missing, someone must have stolen it for a souvenir.
Vivina gave a nod and turned and headed out of the Great Hall to the storage closets, there were a couple in the side hallway but Vivian couldn’t remember which one the tablecloths were located in. She opened the first small door, but quickly shut it. Inside was the Beauxbaton champion and her date, and no tablecloths in sight.
Vivian rushed away hoping they hadn’t noticed her, trying to delete what she just saw from her mind. She went to the next door, opened it and saw another Beauxbaton girl, with streamers on her dress robes, crying, “Are you alright?”
“No,” The girl glanced up, she had clearly been crying for a while now, “Gabrielle was the love of my life and now she’s in love with someone else! No one else in the Raisinette family has ever been broken up with besides me!”
“I-” Vivian wasn’t sure what to say, something about this girl scared her.
“Just get out!” The girl said letting out a sob, and with surprising strength pushed Vivian out the door and closed it swiftly.
Vivian walked a few meters down the hall and opened the last small door but it wouldn’t open all the way. Vivian soon saw why, Kronkk’s best friend who she called Folx and a 6’5 Durmstrang student were snogging in the darkness.
“Do you mind?” the 6’5 girl glared.
“I’m just fetching a tablecloth,” Vivian said, looking down at her feet.
“Stana give her that tablecloth. It’s behind you,” the other Durmstrang girl commanded, and Vivian soon felt the tablecloth hit her face and the door slam shut.
Vivian made her way back to the Great Hall, placed the tablecloth on the table, and looked out over the crowd, she saw Kronkk dancing in the center. She was spinning in her dress robes, the lights dancing off her face, another girl’s arms around her. Vivian felt the tears and jealousy form, she wanted to be the one dancing with her.
“Oh, to be young and feel love's keen sting,” Headmaster Rowling said, suddenly standing next to Vivian.
“Headmaster, I didn’t see you there,” Vivian said, wiping the tears away. Headmaster Rowling was the wisest and most accomplished headmaster the school had ever had.
“Just remember, she wants you,” Headmaster Rowling said, giving a wink and walking away.
The Second Task
Kronkk had spent weeks trying to figure out the clue for the second task, finally with the help of Vivian she had cracked the code, they were going to have to fight a Cockatrice. It was now the morning of February 24th and Kronkk was having the best time of her life. She had a girlfriend who she loved, she was in the lead to win the triwizard tournament, and it was still winter, her favorite season of the year.
“Good luck today,” Aussie said passing by, she seemed to have developed an even stronger crush on her since the ball.
“Kronkk doesn’t need luck,” Folx said with a grin, “She’s running on pure talent.”
Kronkk made her way to the Champion tent, inside waiting was Mena and Gabrielle, Mena was looking distraught.
“Her girlfriend just broke up with her,” Gabrielle said in a sympathetic tone, rubbing Mena’s back.
“She said she still has feelings for her ex girlfriend and they got back together,” Mena said, wiping the tears off her face.
“Forget her,” Kronkk said, “You’re one of the Champions, she doesn’t deserve you.”
“Thanks Kronkk,” Mena said with a smile, “Now let’s do this task!”
The three of them made their way to the arena together, the task was simple, the first one of them to capture the Cockatrice would win. The large creature resembled a lizard with a rooster’s head, Gabrielle let out a snort at the sight of it.
The whistle blew and all three ran into the arena, spells flying. Gabrielle almost captured it first with a rope she had transfigured, but Mena turned a spell on her, blasting her out of the way. Kronkk responded by hitting Mena with a spell so she wouldn’t take the lead, and soon all three of them were engaged in a three way duel.
In a matter of minutes Mena was on the ground, taken out by someone’s stupefy spell,  Gabrielle’s skin was covered in blisters, and Kronkk felt one of her arms turn boneless. The crowd was screaming at the top of their lungs, Kronkk could see Stana and Folx jumping up and down yelling directions she could not hear. Vivian was in the top row, arms crossed, looking intense and nervous.
Kronkk went into a double backspring from behind the rock she was hiding behind, “Diffindo!” she said, aiming a spell at Gabrielle mid jump. Gabrielle’s face now ran with blood.
“Confringo!” Gabrielle screeched, aiming back at Kronkk.
“Protego!” Kronkk yelled and Gabrielle’s spell bounced off and hit the Cockatrice.
With an angry rooster call, the creature, now on fire, took off. Their dueling spells must have broken through the barrier for it flew upward towards the judges table, setting all three headmasters on fire at once and clawing at them.
Chaos consumed the stands and the creature was subdued and the headmasters were rescued. Madam Terfectly rushed over trying to help and the headmasters were transported away for medical care.
“THE TASK HAS BEEN DECLARED A TIE!” The announcer boomed.
~~~
There was talk about canceling the tournament after the Cockatrice attack, but it was determined after heavy debate that it should resume. Now a few weeks later the final task was two months away, a hunt for the winning cup in the black lake.
Vivian sat in the crook of a large branch in the hidden forest, Kronkk’s head resting on her lap, “Kronkk?”
“Yes?” Kronkk said, sitting up, the contours of her face barely visible in the moonless night.
“I think I’m in love with you,” Vivian said softly.
“I’m in love with you too,” Kronkk said, and leaned in for a kiss.
The Final Task
“Marry me,” Kronkk said, pulling Vivian closer, “I know we’re young, but there is no one else I would rather spend the rest of my life with.” They were standing alone outside the castle in the warm spring air, the final task set to start soon.
Vivian felt a surge of happiness, “Of course I’ll marry you.”
“After the task today I have to travel back to Durmstrang, but on the day of our graduation next month let’s meet in Hogsmeade.”
“And then we won’t have to hide anymore,” Viviam beamed.
“We can buy a house and never be apart ever again,” Kronkk said, grabbing Vivian and pulling her in close for a kiss.
Vivian pulled away laughing, “you’re going to be late for the task.”
Kronkk gave a large grin, came in for another kiss before bounding off towards the lake.
Vivian watched Kronkk rush towards the Champion’s tent, she gave one last turn towards her and Vivian saw her smile, “I love you,” Kronkk mouthed.
“I love you more,” Vivian mouthed back. Kronkk gave a laugh, Vivian could see the happiness radiating in her eyes as she turned her back and continued running.
~~~
Since Kronkk had won the first task and the second had been a tie, she dove into the black lake first. The screams of the crowd immediately lessened as soon as she was underneath the water. She had hoped to catch another glimpse of Vivian, but hadn’t been able to spot her in the crowd.
The water was icy cold. Kronkk muttered a spell to make a bubble of air appear on her face. She swam over the dark foggy landscape, there were forests of rippling weeds and glimmering stones. Kronkk swam for what felt like almost an hour, searching and searching for the winning cup. Where was it?? Kronkk thought desperately. She had to win. The prize money alone would help her get a large house with Vivian, help send her sister on a trip to visit her favorite singer Terflor Swift, and even help Folx buy that pet Hippogriff she had always wanted since they were young.
Kronkk swam down further into the dark weeds, maybe she didn’t need that large house anyway, just a week ago when her Vivian were dancing together in the forbidden forest, Vivian had said she would live with her right there in a tent forever. Just being with her was enough, that it would always be enough.
Kronkk smiled to herself, but then something caught her attention out of the corner of her eye, there was rapid movement of dark shapes. Turning and diving deeper, she made her way in that direction. As she got closer she saw more clearly, Gabrielle was entangled below in a large net in the darkness below, and was in a panic. Kronkk noticed her wand was missing.
Kronkk swam down quickly to rescue her, as she got closer Gabrielle started moving her arms as if to warn her, “it’s a trap!”
“What?”
Kronkk felt something grab onto her foot and she was jerked downward, her wand snatched and strong arms wrestled her down, Kronkk felt a punch to her ribcage. Netting was suddenly surrounding her and she turned to see herself trapped right next to Gabrielle.
A woman appeared outside the net, with gills on her neck for breathing, “I’m sorry dear,” she said with a sneer to Kronkk, “I only meant to get Gabrielle here. She’s become quite a distraction for my daughter after she left her and broke her heart, and my Missy deserves better. You were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
The woman swirled her wand, muttered a spell, and the air bubbles for both Kronkk and Gabrielle immediately vanished. She began to laugh and then swam off.
Kronkk’s felt her adrenaline surge, exchanging a look with a now even more panic stricken Gabrielle, both of them began to claw at the net. But it was futile.
Suddenly Mena appeared out of nowhere with a mermaid tail instead of legs, her hair glimmering in the water. “Don’t worry I’ll save you!” Mena said, grabbing onto the net she started to swim upward. Kronkk could see the cup in her other hand, her wand also missing.
Time began to slow, as Kronkk felt the burning in her chest increase. Gabby was clinging to her arm in fear. Kronkk could see Mena above them, her normal legs had returned and she was swimming with all her might, holding onto the net that enclosed them, desperation in each stroke.
Kronkk thought of best friend Folx, who made her laugh, of her parents and sister, who she loved. Of Vivian, sweet, intellectual Vivian, of what it felt like to be held in her arms. No, she didn’t want to go yet. Not like this. The burning increased and she felt herself breathe in water. Kronkk felt the Beauxbaton’s girl’s fingers slip away. Then there was darkness.
~~~
 Mena emerged from the water holding the cup, soaking wet, “HOGWARTS HAS WON!” the announcer yelled. Then the terror began, as the crowd, and Vivian, noticed she was dragging out the lifeless bodies of Gabrielle and Kronkk in a net.
No no no, Vivian felt the blood pounding in her head. Her legs felt weak as she tried to take a few steps forward. Screams were beginning to come from everywhere.
A Beauxbaton girl, Amber, who Vivian had always seen with Gabrielle was running forward pushing everyone out of the way, her face desperate and wild, Vivian averted her gaze. Turning her vision back to Kronkk, hoping she would pop up laughing. Any moment now.
Another Durmstrang girl, Folx, reached Kronkk first, pulled her from the net and grabbed her by the shoulders and began to scream, “Lav wake up! Wake up! This isn’t funny! Lavender!”
Time seemed to slow, Vivian could see students fleeing, professors were attempting to console sobbing first years. Vivian kept moving forward, at a snail’s pace. Her eyes trained on Kronkk. She had promised her a lifetime of memories, they were going to be together after graduation. Her champion. Why wouldn’t she Just. Get. Up.
A short Beauxbaton girl, Missy Raisinette, dressed up in streamers had now jumped on Mena and was pulling at her hair and screaming that she was going to make her pay for hurting Gabrielle. Professor Bells was frantically attempting to get her off of a sobbing Mena who was attempting to hit Raisinette back with the triwizard cup.
Vivian walked past Gabrielle. Amber had her cradled in her lap and was sobbing over her body yelling out in french. The Beauxbaton headmaster had reached them and was now crouched next to them and was whispering into the sobbing girl’s ear and stroking her head in an embrace.
Vivian had now reached Kronkk and stood watching from a few feet away, wanting to reach out and touch her, but feeling as if she did not belong there. Folx had wiped the mud off of Kronkk’s face, “It’s okay I got you, I’m here, it’s going to be okay,” her teeth were chattering and she was shaking. Kronkk’s eyes were wide open, the electricity behind them had vanished.
The Durmstrang headmaster reached down and picked up Kronkk’s body, cradling her like a sleeping child. Another 6’5 Durmstrang student, Stana, pulled Folx into her arms and the group set off towards the Durmstrang ship.
“No, come back!” Vivian felt herself screaming, but no words escaped her lips.
Vivian felt a hand grab her arm, turning her head standing next to her was Opabinia, “Vivian,” she said as if worried she would spook her, “Come with me.”
Vivian let herself be walked off towards the castle, Opabinia holding her close the whole way there.
~~~
“They say they’re discontinuing the tournament forever”
“You don’t actually believe Mena Lez had them killed?”
“Who else would have done it? I'm surprised they haven't arrested her yet.”
“My dad said the ministry has been dealing with an international fall out because of it”
“Not surprising, the Beauxbaton girl was the daughter of the french minister of magic”
Vivian blocked out the voices, closing her eyes she leaned further back into the pillar, it was her new favorite hideout. Opabinia had yet to find her here. Sometimes she came here and pretended she could still feel Kronkk’s lips on her own. Today was her last day at Hogwarts, everyone else was celebrating but Vivian couldn’t get the final image of Kronkk out of her mind.
A sudden thought struck her, Vivian moved quickly out of her hiding spot and through the castle, making her way to the ravenclaw tower. The riddle at the entrance was easy to solve, the sorting hat did say all those years ago that she had the wit to be sorted there. Moving past the common room she made her way to the seventh year dorm. Inside as expected she saw Mena Lez, alone in her bed.
Mena glanced up and sighed, “they sent the head girl to make me get out of bed?”
“No, I came on my own,” Vivian said.
“Well I don’t care what you say, I’m not getting up-”
“I was in love with Kronkk,” Vivian said out loud to someone else for the first time.
“Wha-what?” Mena said, looking confused.
“We were in love. Kronkk and I. I snogged her all over this castle. From the moment she arrived, she and I were together. We planned to live together after graduation. Before the final task, she had proposed to me. I never wanted someone more in my life.”
Mena stared at her in silence, seconds passed, then she took a deep breath, “I saw them drown. We had lost our wands, they got trapped in the netting somehow, and I was helpless. I watched their life leave them. I couldn’t save them. I can’t sleep without seeing the terror in their eyes when they realized that it was over.”
Vivian walked over and laid down next to Mena, “and now they’re gone.”
“And we’re still here.”
Then they cried together and for the first time in a month Vivian felt a little less alone.
