Indigenous People’s Day 2022
Today we commemorate Indigenous People’s Day with art by Native American Women from Hearts of Our People: Native American Artists. This exhibition catalog was published in Minneapolis in 2019 by the Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA) in conjunction with the University of Washington Press to accompany the traveling exhibit “Hearts of Our People: Native Women Artists.” The exhibition catalog was prepared by MIA curator Jill Ahlberg Yohe and Kiowa artist Teri Greeves.
While the exhibit and its catalog featured art from antiquity through the present, I decided to primarily focus on the work of living artists, with the exception of the marble by Edmonia Lewis. Lewis, born in the mid-19th century to an African-Hatian father and a Black and Mississauga mother, is credited with being the first African American and first Native American to attain international success in the art scene. Trained in and working out of Rome, Lewis incorporated themes of Blackness and Indigeneity into her Neoclassical sculptural work. Whether through the subversion of traditionally European artforms or the reimagining of Indigenous traditions, the contemporary artists featured here alongside Lewis bring the depth of Native visual languages to a wide range of mediums.
Explore the exhibit further through the exhibition page from the Smithsonian American Art Institute, which hosted the exhibit from February 21-March 13, 2020.

“Seeing my work on the red carpet at Cannes made me feel so proud; It made me feel like the telling of our history will not be squashed. The power of fashion, and the power of art, tells our stories and histories.” - Keri Ataumbi

Necklace with pendant, from Pocahontas jewelry set, Keri Ataumbi , metalsmith, 2014, Minneapolis Institute of Art: Art of Africa and the Americas
choker-length necklace with large pearls; three pairs of floral charms with diamond centers--gold exterior and silver interior/backs--flanked by purple and white swirled tube-shaped beads; octagonal pendant with three scallops on top and teardrop-shaped drop below, with multicolored beaded relief portrait of Pocahontas on one side of pendant, pink flower with radiating black lines on tan ground on opposite side; slightly asymmetrical clasp with tiny light purple faceted stones/beads Keri Ataumbi and Jamie Okuma worked collaboratively to bring fellow Native American woman Pocohantas to life. Drawing inspiration from 1616 engravings by Simon van de Passe, and Thomas Sully’s classic 1852 portrait of Pocohantas, Okuma created portraits on buckskin that were then adorned by Ataumbi’s use of precious metals and stones. This beautiful set strengthens the Mia’s collection in many ways, from modern design to traditional Native beadwork. Size: 10 1/4 × 1 5/16 × 1/2 in. [TASK 169: COMANCHE]
In celebration of November being Native American Heritage Month, here’s a masterlist below compiled of over 90+ Comanche faceclaims categorised by gender with their occupation and ethnicity denoted if there was a reliable source. The Comanche are a Native American and Native Mexican tribe who historically have lived in a region they call “Comancheria”, which encompasses the US states of Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas and the Mexican state of Chihuahua. The majority of Comanche now live in Oklahoma or Texas. If you want an extra challenge use random.org to pick a random number! Of course everything listed below are just suggestions and you can pick whichever faceclaim or whichever project you desire.
Any questions can be sent here and all tutorials have been linked below the cut for ease of access! REMEMBER to tag your resources with #TASKSWEEKLY and we will reblog them onto the main! This task can be tagged with whatever you want but if you want us to see it please be sure that our tag is the first five tags, @ mention us or send us a messaging linking us to your post!
THE TASK - scroll down for FC’s!
STEP 1: Decide on a FC you wish to create resources for! You can always do more than one but who are you starting with? There are links to masterlists you can use in order to find them and if you want help, just send us a message and we can pick one for you at random!
STEP 2: Pick what you want to create! You can obviously do more than one thing, but what do you want to start off with? Screencaps, RP icons, GIF packs, masterlists, PNG’s, fancasts, alternative FC’s - LITERALLY anything you desire!
STEP 3: Look back on tasks that we have created previously for tutorials on the thing you are creating unless you have whatever it is you are doing mastered - then of course feel free to just get on and do it. :)
STEP 4: Upload and tag with #TASKSWEEKLY! If you didn’t use your own screencaps/images make sure to credit where you got them from as we will not reblog packs which do not credit caps or original gifs from the original maker.
THINGS YOU CAN MAKE FOR THIS TASK -  examples are linked!
Stumped for ideas? Maybe make a masterlist or graphic of your favourite faceclaims. A masterlist of names. Plot ideas or screencaps from a music video preformed by an artist. Masterlist of quotes and lyrics that can be used for starters, thread titles or tags. Guides on culture and customs.

Born on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming in the early 1970s, Kiowa sisters Keri Ataumbi and Teri Greeves grew to become innovators in their respective art practices of jewelry-making and beading. The two artists were introduced to traditional Native art at young ages by their mother, Jeri Ah-be-hill, and went on to study at prestigious national institutions and make names for themselves in the Santa Fe art scene and beyond.
