Tales From the Mos Eisley Cantina - Ed. Kevin J. Anderson
Read: Mar - Apr 2023
Normally my strategy with collections is to rapid fire go through all the stories and give them a quick yay or nay. But this collection was unique in my experience. Each story is about a background character seen in the cantina scene in A New Hope. And all the stories interconnect. Not only do they all converge on the cantina for the scene with Luke, Obi-Wan, Han, and Chewbacca, they often intersect with other stories in other ways. The first couple stories I was like is this worth it? But as I went on and caught onto what they were doing it became way more fun to read.
Info: Bantam Spectra; 1995; Contributing authors: Kathy Tyers, Tom & Martha Veitch, Timothy Zahn, A. C. Crispin, Dave Wolverton, David Bischoff, Barbara Hambly, Daniel Keys Moran, Kevin J. Anderson, Rebecca Moesta, Doug Beason, Jennifer Roberson, Jerry Oltion, Kenneth C. Flint, M. Shayne Bell, Judith & Garfield Reeves-Stevens

Two lengthy articles here. One is typical Division of Music information, and the other sounds really odd in retrospect.
BJU Student Rank High On National Tests
Bob Jones University students have gained an enviable record in making unusually high scores each year on the National Teachers Examination and on the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants examination.
Last year the average mean score of the BJU students on the accountants examination was 25 per cent above the national average, and one-third of them scored above the 80th percentile. One student, Kenneth Burch of Fowler, Colo., ranked in the 96th percentile. Mr. Burch has accepted a position as a junior accountant with the New York office of Price, Waterhouse and Co., an international public accounting firm.
Kenneth Eugene Burch is a member of the Class of 1967. He married Jean Anna Hicks, a Home Ec major from the Class of 1968 in the Spring of 1968.
Tumblr media
According to Dean Laurence Lautenbach of the university's School of Business Administration, BJU students have taken the test for the past six years, and each year their scores have been well above the national average. The test is the form E, level II, 2-hour senior accounting examination.
Two BJU seniors ranked in the top one percent of the Nation on the National Teachers Examination last year, according to Dr. Walter G. Fremont, dean of the university's School of Education. Sixteen BJU students ranked in the top 10 per cent of the nation on the test.
Students scoring in the top one percent were Paul A. Loder of Flint, Mich, and Miss Laura J. Hadley of Cherry Creek, N.Y. Both were awarded graduate assistantships at BJU and are presently pursuing graduate degrees.
Paul Allen Loder was a Bible major but was scheduled to teach Math the next year. He married Sandra Gehman in June 1967.
Tumblr media
Loder did teach one year at BJU, and he now is at Indiana Baptist College.
Laura Jane Hadley was a Christian Education graduate in 1967, and she did teach for two years. And I can’t find her after that.
Tumblr media
This is the 17th consecutive year seniors in the School of Education at BJU have made scores higher than the national average on the NTE. The past year's average for the BJU seniors was 632, ranking them in the 60th percentile. The national average score was approximately 612.
Last year 96.6 per cent of the 116 students who took the test made scores sufficiently high for a grade A teaching certificate, according to the scale ot standards adopted by the South Carolina Education Department.
Similarly, on the advanced test in education of the graduate record examinations, BJU seniors majoring in this field consistently make an average score above the national aver-age. Last year the education students ranked above the 73rd percentile with an average score of 473 compared with the national average of approximately 418. Twenty-one students scored in the top 10 per cent in the nation.
In the past eight years, more than 1,000 BJU graduates have been certified and have taught in at least 42 states.
Music Teachers of S. C. Plan Meeting at BJU
The eighth annual convention of the South Carolina Music Teachers' Association and the Southeastern regional convention of the National Association of Teachers of Singing will be held Nov. 24 at Bob Jones University. In conjunction with these events. the South Carolina String Teachers Association will hold its annual meeting and workshop.
David Gibson, chairman of the piano department of Furman University, is president of the Music Teachers' Association; and Virgil Smith, chairman of the music department of Coker College, is first vice president and program chairman for the convention. John McCrae, chairman of the opera department of Converse College is president of the S. C. chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing; and Dr. Gail Gingery, chairman of the division of music, Bob Jones University, is program chairman for the meeting of the teachers of singing.
Many distinguished musicians will participate in the three-day events. Bruce Symonds, professor emeritus of Yale University, will serve as piano clinician, and will judge the piano auditions and play a recital in the Concert Center at 8 p. m., Nov. 2. Loren Withers, chairman of the piano department at Duke University, will present a workshop on modern methods in teaching piano technique.
Of special interest to pre-college teachers will be the work shop presented by David Carr Glover of Portsmouth, Va. Mr. Glover is considered one of the most successful composers of piano teaching material in the United States today. He will be assisted by two teachers from the Glover School of Music and Creative Arts in Portsmouth.
Dr. John Boda, professor of composition and theory at Florida State University, will present a theory workshop with emphasis on compositional devices in contemporary piano literature.
The National Association of Teachers of Singing will conduct regional auditions at all levels for the students of members. On Saturdav, Nov. 4, the regional competition for the singer of the year contest will be held. The finals of this contest will be held in Chicago in December. A nationally known vocal authority will be present as workshop consultant for the sessions to be held on Friday and Saturday.
On Friday evening, Nov. 3, the convention banquet will be held in the university's Dixon-McKenzie Dining Common when the speaker will be Dr. Maurice Hinson of Louisville, Ky., president, Southern Division, Music Teachers National Association.
More than 300 are expected to attend this convention, which is considered one of the outstanding events of the musical year in South Carolina and will draw delegates from the surrounding area.

I love everything about this. ❤  Before anyone says anything, yes - I know full well that you can read this novel, in its entirety, for free online. So. Why did I spend $12.71 for a physical copy of a free book that’s been out for the past 7 years?
Because I just love the fact that it exists. Some fan(s) out there dedicated the time and money to commission a small print run of a long-lost piece of Star Wars Media, and now it’s sitting on my bookshelf. That’s wonderful.
Tumblr media
The story of this book is wild, man. I am by no means an expert on the subject, but the strangest part of its story might just be the treatment of its author, Kenneth C. Flint. The guy was straight-up screwed out of his own piece of Star Wars media, and even though he did go on to write a couple of SW short stories later on, I feel incredibly bad for him as a creator. I only hope that he goes on to get some much needed love from SW fans, and others at large.
As for the printing of the book itself....it’s alright. Not bad by any means, just pretty much what you would expect from a small, independently published mass-market paperback. I do have to say though, it’s weird to see a brand new Bantam-Spectra Era Star Wars paperback in the year 2021, a full 29 years after it was written. Weird, in a good way. 🙂
Oh, and they just reused the back cover and spine from The Courtship of Princess Leia:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean, regardless of what you think of Courtship (it sucks), it does have very nice cover art. Those elements also work well with the art on the front cover of Heart, which I believe is an original by Dave Dorman(?). This is the man who did most of the cover artwork for Star Wars projects like Dark Empire and the novel tie-ins for Dark Forces in the mid 90′s. Truly a legend in his own right, and very much deserving of more attention.
Anyway, I thought I would share on this, the most auspicious of days to be a Star Wars fan. Stay tuned. 😎
****
EDIT: The site where the free version is available says this about the cover art:
[ID: *Note the cover mockup was made by me based on an image from artist Paul Shipper.  No copyright infringement is intended or implied.  For a look at all of Paul’s amazing artwork, please go to his page here.]
Thanks for coming through in the clutch, @threadsketchier! 😎
****
EDIT EDIT: As of (roughly) May 12, 2021, Disney has already eviscerated the book from Amazon, and you can’t even view the item in your purchase history. On the one hand, I can understand why it was taken down from a purely legal perspective; Disney owns Star Wars and its accompanying copyrighted images (the SW logo, character likenesses, etc.) and they are required by law to enforce their copyrights, lest they forfeit any potential profits. However, for them to rip the thing from Amazon almost immediately, and the simple fact that this book is the first piece of Legends (sort of) media published physically in almost a decade, it feels kind of disrespectful to Legends fans, and besides that it is just so, sooooo sleazy.

THE HEART OF THE JEDI
Many have been asking me how to get a copy now that the book has been pulled from Amazon.
Echo Base has a few copies and they will be giving 1 copy away every Saturday on their live streams over the next few weeks.
All you have to do is show up on their stream on Saturdays at 7PM CST. for a chance to win a copy.

Good luck and May The Force Be With You!
Here is a video explaining the situation with the book if you are curious about it.

The Heart of the Jedi: A long-lost Legends Novel
The Heart of the Jedi: A long-lost Legends Novel
Recently, I noticed the Star Wars book world was aflutter with a book called The Heart of the Jedi. Intrigued, and a little excited at the prospect of a new Star Wars book, I looked into it on Amazon. From what I understood at the time (which wasn’t much, admittedly), it seemed to be a self-published fan fiction novel, and was sold on Amazon, then taken down, presumably because of copyright…

So you want to read… Medieval Irish
Brave choice.
Where do I start?
First things first: CELT is your friend! A lot of Old Irish sources are a little harder to get hold of and often a little more expensive than a lot of more popular or widely attributed mythologies, and online sources are rife with information based on Victorian interpretations rather than original sources. The Corpus of Electronic Texts is a rich well of original sources translated into English. I would definitely recommend starting with the Táin, which is the best-known of the early sagas. If you want to start out with something original, but a little more modern or shorter, I’m a fan of The Life of Brigit.
If those are a little dense, or you just prefer audio, The Brehon Academy has a lot of excellent stories from early Irish literature uploaded on their Youtube channel. Ireland’s Myths and Legends is a great source for browsing. Discovering Ireland also has some excellent introductory stories up on their website.
Translations, Editions, and other Originals
If you can afford to buy for a more modern edition, the Táin remains a great start. Kinsella’s translation is excellent, as is Carson’s.
J. Gantz’s collection, Early Irish Myths and Sagas, is an excellent branching off point into wider early Irish literature, and would be well followed by Murphy’s Early Irish Lyrics. I would also recommend Ann Dooley’s Tales of the Elders of Ireland, although it can be a little dense to read.
There are also some terrific retellings by Finn Longman on Youtube, along with a lot of assorted background and discussion on Irish mythology and literature.
Theory and Analysis
For some general background, Bhreathnach’s Ireland in the Medieval World AD 400–1000 is an excellent resource; as is Ó Cróinín’s Early Medieval Ireland 400–1200. You can get some excellent archaeology background from Edwards’ The Archaeology of Early Medieval Ireland. For an analytical look at Irish mythology, I would recommend Ireland’s Immortals by Mark Williams.
If you do want to take a crack at learning the language, you can get a decent start using Quin’s Old Irish Workbook and Strachan and Bergin’s Old Irish Paradigms and Glosses. Scéla mucce Meic Dathó is a good beginners text.
Modern Interpretations
As mentioned above, there are several great Youtubers and bloggers in the Old Irish arena. In addition to those linked above, I would recommend @trans-cuchulainn and @donn-nimhe.
Irish-inspired fantasy is in something of a boom at the moment. My first introduction to the subject was Kate Thompson’s The New Policeman and its sequels, which I hugely recommend. Morgan Llewellyn’s Red Branch is an old-school but very fun fantasy with historic roots. The Folk Keeper by Franny Billingsley is a wonderfully atmospheric story which blends Irish and Scottish traditions of selkies. I would also recommend Kenneth C. Flint’s Sidhe series.
A more grounded, modern series with strong Irish mythology influences can be found in the form of Elly Griffiths Ruth Galloway Novels. Irish lore is pretty popular in detective fiction, since it’s also displayed in the Merry Gentry series by Laurell K. Hamilton.
Cartoon Saloon is well-known for its beautiful films rooted in Irish myth and art, starting with the historically-rich The Secret of Kells. Live-action fans should try out the likewise gentle and atmospheric The Secret of Roan Inish.
For some quirkier choices, High Moon is a fun series of modern werewolf comics with a lot of Irish mythology inspiration behind them. I haven’t tried either of these video games, but they have pretty good reviews from Irish mythology lovers and video game fans alike. This Welsh-language rock opera adapts Irish sagas into some pretty great music.

The coastline around Newquay bristles with rocky headlines. Penhale Point, Kelsey Head, Pentire Point, Towan Head, Park Head, Griffin Point . . . Jutting out into the ocean like the jagged teeth of an ancient comb. Many of these promontories were the refuge places of early man. Geologically and physically advantageous sites where cliff castles were built during the Iron Age. Trevelgue Head, close to the tourist mecca of Newquay, is thought by many to have the finest example of a cliff castle in all of Cornwall. It is considered a site of national importance.
Cliff Castles
There are cliff castles at intervals around the entire coast of Cornwall. Roughly 30 in total, both confirmed and suspected examples – the sea eats away at them yearly making some hard to identify. You can find them at Rame Head, Black Head, Kenidjack, Gurnards Head and Tintagel to name just a handful.
Also known as promontory forts, cliff castles are coastal defensive sites that were carefully chosen for their defendable geology. The nature of our Cornish coast gave their builders ample viable locations. Once a suitable headland was selected a series of banks and ditches were constructed across the neck, effectively cutting it off from the mainland. At Trevelgue Head there are 7 main ramparts. The encampment on the ‘island’ would have been relatively safe and importantly more easily defendable.

Trevelgue Head however also had the added protection of a natural sea chasm or gully which dividing it further from the mainland. The headland is therefore sometimes called Porth Island because of this.
With the man-made defences in place the sea was the only other means of approach or attack. At Trevelgue the southern cliffs are quite low, accessible by foot at low tide, but the cliffs to the north of the headland are very different. Ragged and sharp sided, they reach around 100m at their highest point.
Early Archaeology & Legend
Exploring the Trevelgue Head today the ditch defences and the two Bronze Age barrows, one crowning the hilltop, are still the most obvious signs of human occupation. Various antiquarians and archaeologists have explored the site over the years, sometimes picking up Iron Age pottery and flints just lying about on the surface. In the 1820s a Mr Martyn found five worked flints and an axe head on the headland while out walking.
A few years later in 1849 S.R. Pattison submitted a report to the Royal Institute of Cornwall on ‘Some Earth Works near Newquay’. He described the site as “in the most perfect state than any other earthworks on the coast.” Pattison was rather overcome with enthusiasm. He took the various banks to be the foundations of large buildings (he wasn’t far wrong) which led him to conclude the settlement was not the work of natives but that it was ‘a Danish encampment’. This idea is perhaps the source of the legend that the largest barrow, towards the end of the headland, is the resting place of a Danish Chieftain.
Bronze Age barrow close to end of headland
“Tradition says that it is the grave of a Danish chieftain and that his people buried him close to the cliff edge so that when their vessels passed along the coast they could honour his memory by dipping their dreaded and sign, a black Raven on a blood-red ground.” A. G. Folliott Stokes, 1928.
In the 1870s William Borlase excavated the two barrows on Trevelgue Head. He found bones, charcoal and thousands of pieces of flint but it was the excavations of Charles Kenneth Croft Andrew that uncovered many of the amazing secrets of this headland.
Bronze Age barrow on mainland
The 1939 excavations
The summer of 1939 was long and dry. The local newspapers reported that excavations had begun at Trevelgue Head in the July and excitedly asked readers what treasures the dig might reveal.
West Briton, July 1939
Sadly however, the excavation was prematurely halted because of the outbreak of World War II. The work was never completed and the report never published until recently (see below). But the finds that Charles Kenneth Croft Andrew, the lead archaeologist, did manage uncover give us an incredible insight into this complicated site. The dig revealed the long history of human occupation on the headland, from the Neolithic period onwards through the Bronze Age and Iron Age, up until the 4th or 5th century. More than 4000 years of use.
This site has been described as the most impressive of it’s type in South West Briton but it is the small finds that really take us into the world of our ancestors, how they lived, what they valued. Croft Andrews’ excavations uncovered a midden filled with animal bones – cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, birds and shell fish. There were deer horn implements, a wide range of pottery and flints, beads made of glass, bone and amber and more than 20 spindle whorls – clear evidence of the spinning and weaving of wool.
During the early Bronze Age it appears that Trevelgue Head was mainly being used as a funerary site, confirmed by the two barrows, cremated bone and a cist burial. Later there was a move towards more agricultural/domestic use demonstrated by evidence of a field system which the team found.

But it is during the middle Iron Age that there seems to have been the most activity on the headland. The place was a hive of industry. In the early Iron Age, around 800BC, the first defensive earthworks had been built, securing the island. Then around 400 – 100BC there is strong evidence of iron smelting on the site.
The Iron Lode
The Croft Andrew excavations revealed compelling evidence for iron smelting on Trevelgue Head. Furnaces, ore roasting pits, quantities of slag (waste from smelting) and other features connected to the industry were dug up across the site.
“Metal working was carried on early in the Iron Age and throughout some eight centuries and may well be the reason for the siting and prolonged occupation of the place. An iron mine was located under the cliffs on the north side of the headland, rock-cut furnaces were recorded and evidence was found of Bronze smelting” G. C. Dunning, 1949
A good deal of the activity seems to have been focused near the largest rampart closest to the natural gully at the entrance to the island enclosure.
https://vimeo.com/411343572
Importantly in this cleft in the rock, which separates much of the site from the mainland, there is an iron lode running north-south. This is likely to have been the source of the inhabitants ore. It is also likely that the gully was formed by natural erosion, but at the base of the small island just to the east, known as Norwegian Rock, there is a distinct man-made trench. The trench, which is about 1m wide, is cut into the rock on the line of the lode.
“Although no definite age can be ascribed to this feature,[the trench] it seems probable that the lode would have been too small to have attracted attention during the main period of mining in the 18th and 19th centuries.” Jacqueline Nowakowski & Henrietta Quinnell, Trevelgue Head, Cornwall Council, 2011.
Iron objects discovered during the excavations in 1939 included knives, chisels and a large ring, possibly from a harness. It is strange to stand on on the now grassy headland and imagine such industry, and interesting to imagine who the inhabitants were trading with.
House No 1
Perhaps the most impressive remains on Trevelgue Head can not actually be seen today, they are buried beneath the top soil for their own preservation. But they give us further impressions of the status of the site.
The structure was discovered on the 17th July 1939. A small trench revealed a part of a well preserved curved wall which required further investigation. Croft Andrew ended up extending this trench a further fourteen times in order to reveal the magnificent building he named House 1.
House 1: General view looking NW. Credit: Cornwall Council, Trevelgue Head excavations 1939 photographic archive B19
With an extraordinary curving wall of upright slabs, the building was roughly circular and had a diameter of 14m (46ft). House 1 revealed a huge amount about the occupation, the daily life and longevity, of Trevelgue Head. The building contained four hearths and numerous post holes, which would have held the wooden pillars that supported the roof. The finds inside the house included stores of pebbles, gravel and quartz. There were flints, iron slag, wrought iron and copper and bronze fragments, even part of a finger ring was uncovered, as well as beads and spindle whorls. Amazingly it has been estimated that this grand building was in use for a very long time, between around 400BC and 30AD when it fell into disrepair.
When Croft Andrew was forced to down tools by the onset of war the discoveries he had made were buried again, the finds stored away and his notes left unpublished. Little more was done to the site until a survey by English Heritage in the 1980s.
Aside from these awesome man-made remains however nature has certainly worked her magic here too.
Trevelgue Blowhole
Towards the far end of the headland in a narrow gully is one of the most impressive sights at Trevelgue – a blowhole. I actually heard it booming before I saw it.
https://vimeo.com/411334732
The largest of the barrows overlooks this cleave in the cliffs. And from this narrow rocky inlet a cave runs right through the promontory. When the waves rush in from both sides air and water are forced out under pressure resulting in a plume of spray and a low booming sound. John Lloyd Warden Page writes in the 19th century:
“One the highest point is a large barrow overlooking a narrow inlet which cleaves the promontory into two points. As we gaze into the depths below, marvelling at the wonderful transparency of the water which takes a clearer tinge of green from the shelving slate, a dull explosion is heard from the cliff to the right, following by a loud hissing sound and a cloud of spray darts across the chasm.”
According to Page the best time to see the blowhole in action is around two hours before high water when “columns of spray almost as fine as steam are driven through the fissure.”
The Caves
There are a number of caves in and around Trevelgue Head. The Mermaids Cave, the Infernal Regions Cave, Boulder Cave and Fern Cave. The most well known of them are the Banqueting Hall Cave and Cathedral Cavern, which was partially destroyed by a rock fall.
The Banqueting Hall Cave has been often mentioned by 19th century writers and it was for several years used for concerts and tea parties. Measuring 60m (200ft) long by 18m (60ft) wide the cave was capable of holding an estimated 1500 people. What date the cavern was first used for these entertainments isn’t clear but I have found a number of mentions of concerts held there in local newspapers from 1907 onwards.
Said to have been lit by 150 candles, musicians and singers would entertain the ticketed audience with the money raised going towards worthy causes, often the local churches. One concert in August 1909 featuring a pianist, six singers and the Newquay Male Quartette raised funds for the Newquay Institute.
Fern Cavern is the smallest of the caves but according to Page the most beautiful. I have not seen it but it is apparently full of sea spleenwort or asplenium marinum, a kind of coastal fern.
More Information:
There is so much to discover about the 1939 excavations and the later survey undertaken in 1983, far more than I can possibly represent here. Much of the details about the excavations, and some of the images, I have put together come from a hefty report published by Cornwall Council in 2011. Including the original Croft Andrew findings and a modern interpretation of them the book is entitled Trevelgue Head, Cornwall: the importance of CK Croft Andrew’s 1939 excavations for prehistoric and Roman Cornwall by Jacqueline A Nowakowski and Henrietta Quinnell. You can buy it HERE.

10 things to get excited about in the Championship this season
The new Sky Bet Championship season starts this weekend and there is always a lot of intrigue.
Whether it is the lucrative race for the promotion of Premier League at the top of the table, the fight for play-offs or the fight to prevent relegation, it promises to become a fascinating nine months.
Here are just 10 reasons to get excited about the new championship campaign.
Who will follow in Norwich City's footsteps and win the Sky Bet Championship table?
EL LOCO & SECOND TITLE TILT
Marcelo Bielsa is usually not a manager to surpass his welcome, so it came as a huge relief to all Leeds United fans that he re-entered the club after last season's Play-off failure.
Life on Elland Road was certainly not boring under the beating Argentinean final installment, whether it was his intense training schedule, Spygate or their end of the season collapse amid claims of exhaustion.
Bielsa will once again expect his team to play at full throttle at all 46 games, but there is a good reason why bookmakers have installed them as a favorites promotion.
It is probably not boring if Marcelo Bielsa preparing to take charge of Leeds for another season
Jack Clarke signed for Tottenham, but became returned to Leeds for the coming season
Defender Pontus Jansson may have disappeared, but Leeds signed the port Uguese winger Bright Costa on loan from Wolves, Tottenham-bound Jack Clarke determined a little longer and acquired Jack Harrison for another year.
Bielsa has always wiped out pig hair during the season due to fatigue, but last season's experience should have taught him something.
FULL STEAM FOR PREMIER RETURN?
Of the trio that was relegated from the Premier League in May, it is Fulham who looks the best back.
They seem to have learned a hard lesson from 12 months ago, when their £ 100 million spending was on an uncertain side, defensive vulnerability and only five games outside the bottom three.
Their business transfer is not mentioned, but should be effective. Aleksandar Mitrovic has signed a new contract, and they have further strengthened their attack by lending Ivan Knight and Anthony Knockaert.
Aleksandar Mitrovic is expected to thrive again in the championship for Fulham
Fulham has loaned the English winger Ivan Knight from Wolves
Some of their expensive flops from last season are also widened from the team and the wage bill, which makes Fulham look like
Their fans have become accustomed to a style of play that is easy to monitor in recent seasons and Scott Parker – now permanent manager – can keep that.
One question mark has passed Ryan Sessegnon, a target for Tottenham, and if he stays in his team after his deadline, his chances of promotion are further increased.
BEES GOING FOR NEW MOUNTAIN TRANSACTIONS
Brentford & # 39; s new stadium rises rapidly above the West London skyline and how bees like to cut the ribbon next summer as a Premier League -club.
They belong to the bookmaker's favorite cluster because of their attractive brand of football and some ambitious takeovers such as Jansson for a club record £ 5.5 million
Pontus Jansson's defense is the Brentford club record £ 5.5 million summer arrival from Leeds
They have the will of Ezri Konsa lost to Aston Villa and Romaine Sawyers to West Brom, but the money earned back is reinvested.
If Brentford can hold star attacker Neal Maupay – who scored 28 times last season – and creative dynamo Benrahma said, they have a chance to shake up the division.
CAN COCU IMPROVE IT FOR DERBY?
Derby has had four heartbreaks in the past six seasons while trying to return to the Premier League for the first time since 2008.
They have also gone through seven managers over the past four years, with the Dutch legend Phillip Cocu the last after Frank Lampard found the temptation of an emotional return to Chelsea too difficult to resist.
Cocu certainly has no lack of confidence, but he will have to show the versatility he showed as a player for Barcelona and the Netherlands if he wants to succeed where many others have failed.
Dutch legend Phillip Cocu has been commissioned gotten the play-off curse from Derby County to end
Like Lampard, he will rely on a web of contacts to reach talented borrowers, although progress so far has been slow.
He has also vowed to turn the academy graduates of the club into regulars of the first team, but only if owner Mel Morris gives him time.
SUPER SLAV BACK GAME
West Brom also suffered from play-off heartbreak last season – beaten by penalties by local rivals Aston Villa – and so must press the reset button emotionally for the new campaign.
While Derby boss C ocu was on the Dutch side who lost to Brazil in the 1998 World Cup semi-final, new Baggies manager Slaven Bilic was in Croatia and lost in the same phase of France.
Bilic manages Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia since his resignation from West Ham, but it was always a matter of time before returning to England.
Slaves Bilic returned to English football as a West Brom challenge for promotion
The Baggies have strengthened their frontline with the £ 8m signing van Kenneth Zohore
West Brom is again expected to they take on the challenge for the top six, even though they have lost Rodriguez to Burnley and this time have no hotshot Dwight Gayle.
They have strengthened their forward line by signing Kenneth Zohore of Cardiff for £ 8 million and Brentford's Sawyers for £ 3 million, but will the 45 goals from Rodriguez and Gayle?
CAN AGOMIN MAY PROMOTION EXPERT WARNOCK?
Cardiff remained loyal to Neil Warnock after their degradation of the Premier League in May, the sad conclusion dominated by Emiliano Sala & # 39; s tragic death.
It will be a difficult question to immediately return to the top flight, but Warnock – with a record of eight promotions on his resume – is the right man for the job.
The signing of hard-as-nails mid-half Aden Flint from Middlesbrough looks good and the Warnock team will be stingy and hard to break down.
Neil Warnock hopes for ninth promotion as Cardiff push for Premier League return
Cardiff made a cunning signing in with Middlesbrough
And in another classic Warnock move, Cardiff has signed long-throw specialist Will Vaulks from degraded Rotherham.
So the defense works of the opposition can expect that they have many catapulted balls when they are played against Cardiff this season. Probably they get away from that kind of game plan his Middlesbrough, who replaced Tony Pulis with the favorite and former player of Jonathan Towngate.
He has vowed to produce an exciting, offensive side that will undoubtedly be a relief for Bororo fans who & # 39; Pulis-ball & # 39; tired of seeing them slip out of the playoffs last season.
Woodgate will enjoy a lot of patience from the fans, but has to get rid of the play-off mix
They have been silent on the transfer market so far, although Woodgate – the former attacker Robbie Keane has brought in Ireland as an assistant – has said he will strengthen before the deadline.
Place boy Jonathan Woodgate is located on familiar site as the new manager of Middlesbrough Middlesbrough
CAN LAMOUCHI FIREBOS?
It has been a long time since Nottingham Forest has challenged promotion – their last play-off performance was in 2011.
Their owner, the Greek ship magnate Evangelos Marinakis, demands success and replaced Martin O & # 39; Neill by the virtually unknown Sabri Lamouchi.
Lamouchi, the former international midfielder of France, took Ivory Coast to the 2014 World Cup and then led El Jaish in Qatar and the French club Rennes.
Marinakis certainly has high hopes that he can deliver a push promotion, but it is hard to give the impression that Forest is again intended for mid-table.
HOW WILL THE NEW BOYS GET?
After Lampard's success in Derby last season, it will be interesting to see how his contemporary Lee Bowyer is doing in Charlton.
After getting promotion through the League A playoffs last season, Charlton & # 39; s hated owner Roland Duchatelet issued a statement that the contract talks had been broken off and Bowyer would leave.
However, a further revolt of the fans in The Valley was averted when Bowyer committed himself to an annual contract extension to lead them into the second layer.
Lee Bowyer and Dean Smith A joke ahead from Charlton & # 39; s friendly with Aston Villa
Macaulay Bonne, Tom Lockyer and Chuks Aneke have given fans hope that they can survive.
Luton, League One champions, seem to have enough momentum on their side and they too have a new manager in Graeme Jones, until recently Roberto Martinez's assistant for Belgium.
Barnsley is also back, with the German manager Daniel Stendel who has done a great job. But the Tykes tend to have yo-yo between the divisions, so they need something impressive to survive.
WHO WILL LOSE?
Charlton and Barnsley seem to have been convicted by the bookmakers, but people like Millwall, Queens Park Rangers, Reading, Wigan and Birmingham are also expected to struggle.
Birmingham, managed by Pep Clotet following the unpopular plunder of Garry Monk, has the likes of the Jota and Che Adams departments
QPR flirted with relegation last time and is not expected to be better while Wigan & # 39; s talisman Nick Powell has moved to Stoke.
Nick Powell is now in the colors of Stoke after the leaving Wigan in the summer
